If you look up Ventura County Star, click the Santa Paula tab, then click obituaries. Once you are in this section, under search, type in Ruiz under last name, and Sara under first name. This will bring up the obituary of Sara Luque Ruiz, which is your aunt (my great aunt).

Most of their children now live in Ventura County California. When I was a child my father talked alot about his life growing up in Santa Rosalia on the Baja Coast. His legacy and will was for his children to have a better life and his dreams were truly fulfilled.

Luques or Luque?

I just went to the Mormom Church and discovered my Grt-grandfather's name, also his mother's name which would be my Grt-grt-grandmother. My dad had told us at one time he was born out of wedlock (Grt-grandfather). Being that in Mexico people seem to recognize their mothers surname and fathers as the middle name it seems we aquired her name. The differance is that she spelled it with an "s" at the end, no differant I believe, but how I wish to know who was our Grt-grt-grandfather. Anyone out there know if their grt-grt's. lived in the Co. of Sinaloa. He was Christened or born on Sept.-1827 in Cosala Mex.If some of your grt's are from there and they still live, dig and ask, who knows? My dad was born in Ahome.

Thank you Karen Davis, we have heard so many differant countries that this name could have come from. But one thing my dad used to tell us that he had some German in him, well he was a story teller and we had our doubts. Then his young sister told me years ago that it originally was Luke. Know any fact to that? Thank you again.

This is a very interesting subject, I really wish my siblings and I had been more acquainted with my dad's family and had asked more questions. We were born here in Ca. He was born as I said in Sinaloa, My mom in Guanajuato, both in Mx. I do know there is a place in Spain named Luque more in the Basque area, I also one day saw this singer from Uraquay named Luque, and close to the city of Ancision, I think thats how you spell it there is a place named Luque also. I've written to them inquiring how the name came to them, but never received an ans. We are not fair but not very dark, but we are mixed alot. My mom's mom was very dark her dad was not fair more olive color, so by now we are all different, except like I said some have come looking very fair. On top of everything my grandma on my dad's side her surname was"Carlon", that I found out is Irish, Yet my dad used to tell us she was Maya Indian. Her picture shows her to be not fair nor olive, tall and sat straight as a proud person. Our grt. grandma was "Vega". In my mom she was an "Gonzales",& "Mendoza". So we are very mixed an are Americans of Mex.descendents. I had a cousin who just passed away not so long ago and he lived in Mex. and told me there is a lot of Luque's there in the area of San Blas, Ahome, and other areas also. Well I've given you my story, but way ,way back our blood had to have crossed a path? Thanks for hearing me.

If you find out about how the name got to Mex. please tell me I've been trying to find out too.My daughter overheard this man at the bank say his name was Luque, she build her nerve to ask him about the name, well the differance is he spells it Lucke and told my daughter that it was Lueke but somewhere along the way it was changed to the 1st name I wrote. It's a German name. AN aunt that I had told me that it used to be Luke, and was changed, my dad used to tell us he had German in him, but we never believe him cause he was born in Sinaloa, Mex.Ahome. His dad's name Cornelio, my granddad was Jose. Anyone know anything about this?

Claude Luque / Elizabeth Welter
I have been doing research on the Welder family and ran across
Claude Luque (born abt 1801) who married Elizabeth Welder
(born 14 August 1819).
I have some of her ancestors, but not Claudes's.
My understanding is that Claude Luque, a Frenchman, was a
baker who landed at New Orleans from Le Havre on the ship Rob
Roy February 20, 1829. He was twenty-eight years old at the
time. Although the St. Landry Parish records in the Courthouse at
Opelousas, Louisiana, include some problems with the spelling of
the couple's names, they show that Luque signed a marriage bond
there May 26, 1840. Michele or Mike, their first child, was born
February 28, 1841. They would have four more: Marguerite, born
about 1842; Frances, about 1846; Josephine or Joseph about
1848; and Mary Louisa, about 1850. Elizabeth Welter Luque died
in New Orleans January 2, 1856, in a house located at the corner
of St. Louis and Berbigny Streets. Mary Louisa Luque married
Phil Power, the son of James and Tomasa Power (I have their
ancestors).
If you have more questions please contact me at
bagpipe@madriver.com -
Regards, doug Campbell (Starksboro, Vermont)

Then, I found this board and your post. I knew Sarah's parents were Pedro and Juana Luque and that she had a sister Esther. That's when I asked if they (Sarah, Dora and Paul) knew who you were and if Sarah had a sister named Emma. We have never met but I am married to Sarah's son Michael (Miguel).

My ancestor Luque was indeed Luque not Luke.
One thing you might think of, the french are usually not large people and skin a little more olive with dark hair. The german's are bigger boned people and they could be either fair haired or dark. I am not sure where you live but remember that Mexico was way into Texas at one time. Some of my ancestors settled along the border and some of the off spring married and remained in Mexico (those were of german descent). As for the Luque's my ggg grandfather was in New Orleans (he came to America when he was 28 years of age and we still haven't figured out the ship he was on). He was born in France but we don't know where in France. Since some of my ggggrandmother's sisters married Frenchman and they were german then remained in Matamorus, Mexico I am wondering he if came to America thru Mexico. Who knows. Hope some of this will help.

Luque is French. Lots of the French entered US thru Mexico. Also, since ships were the means of transportation from one port to another along the coast of N.O./Texas/Mexico many traveling would settle in Mexico. In the 1800's many foreigners (people from France/Germany etc.) settled in Mexico.
