Sons of Rodham Luttrell and Matilda Horton

I am trying to track two men I believe to be sons of Rodham and Matilda -- Winston (b. abt 1825) and John (b. abt 1826. I found Winston and John living and working a farm together on the 1850 census District 1, Casey Co., KY, on the same page with Rodham and Matilda.

But, in 1860 I find Winston and family and John and family living on adjoining farms in Dist 4, Casey Co., KY. However, the ages of their children indicate both were married by 1850 and should have been listed with wife and children instead of by themselves. Not far away on the same census are William and Sarah Luttrell and Richard R. and Nancy Luttrell, also supposed sons of Rodham and Matilda.

Does anyone have any info on Winston or John? Were they married before 1850? And are the Winston and John in 1850 the same as those in 1860?

Help!

I know it's been a while since you posted this, but have you solved your problem? If not, I have a couple of thoughts. You do know that Richard (1775) is the nephew of Richard (1755)?

Richard (1775) married Elizabeth Elmore in Westmoreland Co in 1795.

Richard (1755) married Hannah (Mitchell) Connolley in Northumberland Co. about 1780.

The marriage of Richard Luttrell to Winifred Routt took place in Northumberland Co. in 1796. Bondsman for the marriage was Chas. Rice. Mother of Richard (1755) was Mary Ann Rice.

If it was Richard (1775) who married Winifred Routt, he would have had to be widowed within 18 months of his marriage to Elizabeth Elmore. Then he would have had to go to Northumberland Co. and marry a widow with two children about 20 years older than him. I find this hard to accept.

It seems to me the logical conclusion is that Richard (1755) is the one who married Winifred Routt. What do you think?

Shirley Dalton

Susannah LUTTRELL

I am trying to complete a DAR application, using Michael LUTTRELL, Jr. (1751-1844) as my patriot. I descend through his daughter Susannah LUTTRELL, born 1785-90 Alabama, who married Mark SHELTON, son of Stephen SHELTON & Rhoda GREEN. Since Susannah, who died about 1825, pre-deceased both of her parents by almost two decades - father, Michael in 1844 and her mother Susannah "Anna" Shelton LUTTRELL in 1840, she is not listed in any probate or will, and of course, too early for a census.

Is there a verifiable source or book that shows Susannah LUTTRELL as the daughter of Michael LUTTRELL and Susannah SHELTON??

Thanks!

Looking for family history for my materal grandfather (Robert Lee Luttrell) that i never knew. He divorced my grandmother (Myrtle Spangler Luttrell) when my mother and her brothers were young (early 50's). He soon married Lucy or Lucille and they lived in Florence, MS until his death in Aug. 1986. He was born in March 7,1913. HE and Myrtle had three children: my mom, Doris Rae b. 12/21/43, Robert Carroll, and Jimmy Charles. I do not know any of his siblings though I believe he had several brothers and/or cousins by names of Jerome, Vernon or Virgil. If you have any info that you think might be related to this Luttrell, please share. My mother's generation is pretty much deceased now too so I have run into a brick wall! Thanks in advance.

James Luttrell, died 1866 in Schuyler County, Illinois

I'm trying to substantiate a story I've heard about my great, great grandmother, Polly Ann Luttrell who married a James Luttrell (supposedly a cousin) in 1866 in Schuyler County, Illinois. I can't find any record of their marriage.

Supposedly, 2 days after the wedding, he beat the then 18 year old Polly up real bad and her brother, George, went over and shot James and "buried him where no one would find him."

To make matters worst, both of Polly's parents had a surname of Luttrell so James could come from either side or they may have just thought he was related - not necessarily as a cousin.

Polly didn't remarry until 1871 when she married George M.D. Thornton also in Schuyler County, Illinois.

Does anyone have a missing James Luttrell who disappeared in the mid 1860's?

Jack/Jackson Luttrell, Abt 1830, Monroe Co, TN area

Married Nancy Vasser in 1850 in Monroe, TN. Children Harry b1853 and Martin b 1856. Jack must have died before 1870 because only Nancy and her sons are listed on that census along with a James "Luttrell" 12 years younger than she is. I think he might be her brother instead of a Luttrell ( the ages are right). Any info on Jack would be much appreciated. Listed as Jack on 1850 census and living with Nancy's mother and family. Listed as Jackson on marriage record. The 1850 census says both of his parents are from TN but I can't find them. Thanks!

Winifred F. (Routt) Stanley/Standley md. Richard LUTTRELL

I need some help and am hoping someone can help me figure out the correct Richard Luttrell.

I have Winifred F. (Routt) Stanley married Richard Luttrell on 16 Jul 1796 in Northumberland County, Virginia. She had 2 children by a previous marriage (Hannah and William Sydnor Stanley). The county borders seem to change about this time as well making it even more difficult.

My Problem: I have her connected to two different Richards and need to know which on is the correct one.

(1) Richard Luttrell, born circa 1775 in St. Stephens Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia, died Jan 1803 in St. Stephens Parish, Amherst County, Virginia [Source: St. Stephen's Parish, Amherst County, Virginia Will - Richard Littrell, dated 30 Dec 1802, probated 10 Jan 1803]. He married (1) Elizabeth Elmore. This Richard is a son of Moses Luttrell and Patience Warmoth.

(2) Richard Luttrell, born 02 Dec 1755 in Richmond County, Virginia [Source: The Registers of North Farnham Parish (1663-1814) & Lunenburg Parish (1783-1800), Richmond, County, Virginia] to Richard Luttrell and Mary Ann Rice. He married (1) Hannah (Mitchell) Connelly circa 1780 in St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia. I have him and all his siblings as born in Richmond County, Virginia but his father is listed as born and died in St. Stephen's Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia so am thinking he was born there as well.

I'm having a hard time telling these two Richards apart.

Is there anyone else who is researching this particular Luttrell line that can give me some help?

Much appreciated.

Marcine Lohman
marcinelohman@comcast.net

I am the younger brother of Mildred Hunter who was married to Herman Luttrell. She had two sons, Kenneth and Steven, who I used to spend a good deal of time with when they lived in Orange County, California. Is it possible that my sister was your grandmother? We would like to request a VA headstone for Geers CW service (Federal). We would also be interested in knowing more about Katy as the mother of CW (CSA)soldiers. We are preparing material recognizing 150 years since the the CW.

Seeking information on John H. LUTTRELL, Ozark County, MO

I have been researching Polly Ann Luttrell who married as her 3rd husband, John H. Luttrell on 30 Sep 1889 in Tiff City, McDonald County, Missouri. He was also called "Old blind" John Luttrell. In 1890, she applied for her former husband, George Mason Dallas Thornton, Sr's Civil War pension. At that time, she was living in Bridges, Ozark County, Missouri and I suspect her third husband likely died in that county. He is definately deceased by 24 Jan 1912 when Polly died in Washington County, Missouri and is listed as a Widow on her death certificate.

I have very little on John H. Luttrell but believe he was born circa 1834 (place unknown) and died Sep 1896 - 1900. He has a land deed dated 25 Sep 1896 so know he was living until then. I've been unable to locate a cemetery record or any census records so anything would be helpful. I'd like to know who his parents are and if he was married before.

Marcine Lohman

Hello George: Whew! You would land upon me. I wish that I could be forthcoming. My research, which you mentioned, was my only foray into the LUTTRELL lineage. I have no information or data that pertains to a Churchwell Jackson. I did take a peek at your posts. Then, I looked for a Jackson reference which might be useful as a lead for you. It is likely that you have all ready seen data about Jacksons which has been posted on the Luttrell message boards. I send this one just in the event you have not perused it.

"Descendants of John Luttrell, SR

Generation No. 1

1. Tn. He married ANNIS JACKSON August 12, 1783 in Amherst Co, Virginia, daughter of PETER JACKSON. She was born March 12, 1763 in Amherst Co, Virginia, and died November 11, 1858 in Knox Co Tn.." [See: Luttrell surname message board at GenForum, message # 434 posted by Juanita Berrian, July 15, 1996.]

Perhaps there will be a lead for your research in this message.

I wish you success in your venture.

Hello--Quite an extensive and thought-provoking article concerning James Luttrell, son of John L. Luttrell. Thanks for all your time on it.

About Sarah Churchwell, daughter of James and wife of Richard Luttrell, have you ever encountered any info on any other members of Sarah's family. I am looking for Churchwells, possibly a female Churchwell who may have married a Jackson.

One of my 5th great grandfathers was Churchwell Jackson (b. 1758, Orange Co., VA-d. abt. 1834 in Marion Co., TN). At the time of his Rev. War service, he was living in Burke Co., NC.

We know nothing re our Churchwell's parents but we are finding that his Jacksons may have once been in Essex and Caroline Counties where they could have encountered Fargusons/Fergusons and Stubblefieldses . We also are questioning if his mother's maiden name was Churchwell or if Churchwell was some sort of a family name. We know of no other name for our Churchwell other than Churchwell.

We also have found on-line, info that we have not substantiated (so you know how that cannot be trusted) that some Luttrells from Sarah Churchwell and Richard Luttress's home area migrated to Amelia CO., VA and there were close to some Fergusons/Fargusons

As you can see, we are grabbing and any proverbial straw! Thank you for any advice or suggestions you might offer us. Regards. George Trampe .

I was at the Augusta cemetery today, 5-30-11. I am a decendent of Pleasant through his son William Henry. He and his wife are definitely buried there at Augusta, I viewed their tombstones today. My family is not yet aware of where his father(Rodham) or mother are buried. Family legend is that Pleasant and his father disagreed concerning matters during the Civil War, and that he took his family out of the Corbin Ky. area and joined the Union army in the fall of 1964. We have some documention for this. This is where we believe the spelling of our surname was changed from Luttrell to Luttrull. All this heritage I find facinating, but to quote my great uncle, (also buried at Augusta) "My future is more certain than my past, I am more concerned with where I am going than where I came from!"

This deduction was made from his age given in the 1850 census as having been 86 years of age [see that this census for J. Lutterell of Shelby County, KY, was enumerated on 27 Sep 1850]and his death date of 10 Aug 1852, when he was listed as 87 years of age [Ancestry.com].

Treatise Concerning James Luttrell, Son of John L. Luttrell & Winifred Lawrence

James Luttrell was a son of John Lewis Luttrell (1728-1790), and Winifred Larrance or Lawrence (1733-1816). [See A. M. Pritchard, Compiler. Allied Families of Read, Corbin, Luttrell, Bywaters. Staunton, VA: The McClure Co., Inc., 1980, p. 203. Hereinafter, simply Allied Families.] This James Luttrell was born in Virginia, probably about 1764. No one has published or provided documentation for the exact day, month, and year of this James Luttrell’’s birth.

Most family historians performing research related to this family have cited the Allied Families book as their source for much of the information about James Luttrell. The section of the book which reported the names of the issue of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred, his wife, reads as follows: "... Sarah, Edward, John, James, Lewis, Fielding, and Frances." [Allied Families, p. 203.] The source book was not fully documented and there were no dates of birth for the issue mentioned. There were no footnotes or citations for this section in the Pritchard book. It was simply reported that the information about the issue of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred, his wife, was from a manuscript by Elston Luttrell and Elston’s data was allegedly supplied by another John Lewis Luttrell who was a son of Andrew Luttrell and Frances Floyd, and a grandson of John Luttrell and Rachel Leaper, and a great grandson of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred Lawrence.

In the Allied Families book, John Lewis Luttrell, son of Andrew Luttrell, was mentioned as having said that James, son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred, went to Washington County, Tennessee. James was not found there. This claim was merely unproven speculation and false based upon federal census data. The first year of census reporting for the State of Tennessee was 1810. No Luttrells (or variant surnames) were reported in the 1810 census. In the 1820 census for the State of Tennessee, there was a James Luttrell (Litrell) in Franklin County, in the age grouping 26-44 years or born between 1776-1794. In the 1830 census for that state and Franklin County, one James Luttrell was reported. The eldest male member of this household was reported in the age grouping 26-44 years or born between 1786-1804. This data suggested that these James Luttrells in these households were born too late to have been the James, son of John L. Luttrell and Winifred Larrance, (Lawrence), born circa 1764.

In the 1840 census for the State of Tennessee, there was a James Luttrell reported in Knox County. The eldest member of this household was listed in the age grouping 80-89 years or born between 1751-1760. This James Luttrell was born prior to the birth of James Luttrell, son of John L. and Winifred Luttrell and was most likely born in 1755 as the son of Richard Luttrell and Sarah Churchwell. No James Luttrells born in the 18th century were reported in census data after the 1840 Federal census enumeration. Therefore, one can conclude that the Allied Families book was wrong about James, son of John L. and Winifred Luttrell having gone to Tennessee.

At the time of the writing of the Allied Families book, the compiler, A. M. Pritchard, was reporting with the best available source materials at his disposal. Luttrell family historians are thankful for Pritchard’s efforts to catalogue limbs of the Luttrell family tree despite the shortcomings with respect to documentation. The wills, land deeds, and letters which were included in Pritchard’s book were of exceptional value. The letters should undergo another thorough and analytic review as only portions of them were made available in the Pritchard book. Secondary source material and hearsay evidence, some of which existed in the Pritchard book, needed further research since such data was frought with difficulties concerning its veracity.

The claim that a James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett was mentioned in the Allied Families book (p. 207) and the source was a book by Dr. and Mrs. William Carter Stubbs of New Orleans, Louisiana, titled A History of Two Virginia Families. The quote from the Stubbs book was as follows:

"Celia Catlett married James Luttrell, and had the following issue: William, Leonard; Henry; Adam; James; John. Nancy. Mary m. Jos. T. Nesmith. Celia m. Stephen Miller. Elizabeth. Sarah, m. 16 Jan 1851, Nun Place." (Stubbs, p. 56.)

The claim in the literature was often made that the James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett was the son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred Lawrence. Claims that this James Luttrell was the son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred, his wife, came later when family historians were looking for a place to ‘‘plug’’ this James Luttrell into their Luttrell lineages. This claim was not in the Allied Families book.

Evidence suggested that the James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett was NOT the son of John Lewis Luttrell and his wife, Winifred Lawrence. Census data simply did not support the claim. In the 1850 Federal Census for Dist. 16, Frederick County, VA, there was James Lutrell, age 61 (born ca 1789), born in VA, farmer. His wife was listed as "Selah," (an obvious aberration in spelling of the given name ... Celia), age 63 (born ca 1787). These ages and birth dates suggested that James and Celia were born a generation after the issue of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred, his wife. Further, the 1860 Federal Census for Dist. 5, Frederick County, VA, listed James Luttrell, age 71, farmer, born VA; wife Cecelia, 73, born VA. This census corroborated the data in the 1850 census for them and also revealed that Catlett’s given name was Cecelia. Celia, or Cecelia, was not found in the 1870 census suggesting that she had died in the interim between 1860-1870. Her husband, James Luttrell, was probably the one in the 1870 census for Locust Grove, Floyd County, VA. This James Luttrell was in the household of a Samuel M. Helen and wife, Mary. James was 80 years of age and an invalid. No other James Luttrells in the 1870 census matched the age of James Luttrell, husband of Celia Catlett, except for this one. Whether this James Luttrell in Floyd County was the widower of the deceased Cecelia was unknown.

The issue of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred Lawrence, as provided in the Allied Families book, were all born, as best evidence available suggested, between 1759 and about 1775, a span of 16 years. The census data, above, provided evidence that the James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett was born about 1789, some 14 years after the birth of the last of Winifred’s children and at a time (1789) when Winifred, born about 1733, was about 56 years of age and John Lewis, her husband, born about 1728, was 61 years of age. These data strongly suggested that the James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett was NOT the son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred.

The census data provided proof that James Luttrell and Celia were living in Frederick County, Virginia. James had purchased land there in 1825. In the Allied Families book, there was this on p. 207:

"By deed of 10 Oct. 1825, recorded in Frederick County, Va., deed book # 51, p. 340, Jos. Baker and Sarah, his wife, conveyed 90 acres of land to James Luttrell of Frederick Co."

This James Luttrell then first appeared in census data in the 1830 census for Frederick County, VA. He was a farmer and this purchase of land was undoubtedly his venture into farming as a family man at the approximate age of 36 years. It was noted that in 1825 when this land purchase was made, James Luttrell, son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred, said to have been born in 1763 by others, was about 62 years of age.

Who were the parents of this James Luttrell, born about 1789 in Virginia? The matter was unclear. It was reasonable to think that his father was one of those Luttrells in Frederick County, Virginia, where this James who married Celia first appeared. There was another set of facts which misled some to think that James Luttrell, born 1789, was the son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred. In the Allied Families book, there was this:

"From the letter of John L. Luttrell, ante, (he the son of Andrew Luttrell, I add for clarification), it appears that Robert, Fielding, Sarah, and Franky (Frances), children of John Luttrell, deceased, together with their mother, Winifred, settled together near each other. This was in Frederick Co., Va., where Robert purchased land as early as 1796, being designated in that deed as of Frederick Co., where the marriage records show that he (Robert) married 1 Nov 1796, Barbara Buzzard. By deed of 19 Mar., 1831, recorded in deed book 58, page 335, Robert’s heirs conveyed to Fielding Luttrell 107 acres of land in Frederick County." [Allied Families, p. 207.]

Following the above citation, the heirs of Robert Luttrell were mentioned. There was no son named James Luttrell. It was noted that Robert had married Barbara in 1796 and about seven years after James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett was born in 1789. Therefore, Robert was not this James Luttrell’’s father.

Importantly, and also in the above citation, there was no mention of the brother of Robert and Fielding named James Luttrell as having traveled with the siblings and their mother, Winifred, to Frederick County, Va. Their brother, James, did not go to Frederick County. He was not there in 1813 when the letter was written by Winifred. The James Luttrell who was there in the 1830 census was the James who bought property there in 1825. He was younger than the brothers Robert, Fielding and James Luttrell. It was very likely that James Luttrell, born 1789 and husband of Celia, was a son of Fielding Luttrell although this has not yet been documented. Since the 1830 census for Frederick County, VA, as presented at Ancestry.com, was indexed and presented alphabetically, it was not possible to learn whether James Luttrell (b. 1789) was living close to Fielding Luttrell (b. ca 1733). Juanita Berrian, a Luttrell family historian, claimed in her message no.765 and dated May 14, 2000, at the Luttrell surname message board, that Fielding Luttrell, son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred, had a son named James. Her inclusion following the name of Fielding’s son James of "d.n.m.," was meant to convey that this James died and did not marry. This information was from the Allied Families book, p. 208. This James was likely the one who married Celia Catlett. There were no other James Luttrells in Frederick County, VA, at that time. There were claims that Celia Catlett had been born in Fauquier County, Virginia. The Catletts were also in Frederick County, Virginia. No documented record of the marriage date for James Luttrell and Celia Catlett has been found in the literature. Also, no record of the date of the marriage of Fielding Luttrell to Elizabeth Burkhamer (Burkheimer) was found in the literature. Finding this marriage date was important for the marriage needed to have been prior to the year 1789 when James was born if James (who married Celia) was a son of Fielding Luttrell and Elizabeth, his wife. In 1789, Fielding Luttrell of Frederick County, Va., was about 16 years of age if his reported birth year of about 1773, found in the literature, was accurate. He could have been born earlier.

There were two Fielding Luttrells in Frederick County, Virginia, in the 1820 Federal Census. Neither can be found except by a line by line analysis of that census. One Fielding Luttrell, brother to James Luttrell, had gone to Frederick County, Virginia, as had his mother, Winifred. They were found in the 1810 census. Winifred died between 1816 and 1818. The second Fielding Luttrell (Lutterel)in Frederick County, Va., in1820, was a new find for the literature. See: Fielding L. Lutterel (Luttrell), in Berryville, Frederick County, Va., p. 3 of 4 at Ancestry. One can speculate that he was a son of Fielding Luttrell (b. 1773). For instance, while the will of Fielding, born abt. 1773 was available and mentioned no son named Fielding, Jr., it was well known that all heirs-at-law were not always included in wills. Some of the reasons for the exclusion of an issue (child or adult) from the will of the deceased were: the death of the issue (child or adult) prior to the death of the father; an unresolved family squabble; a previous allocation of funds to the heir-at-law in lieu of inclusion in the will; the purchase or gift of land in lieu of inclusion in the will; and other reasons. The senior Fielding Luttrell was found as 'Lutterel' in the same census as Fielding L. Lutterel and in the Middletown District on p. 5 of 11 at Ancestry.com. Middletown and Berryville are not distant from one another with Berryville a short distance east of Winchester and Middletown a short distance south of Winchester. No James Luttrell was found in Frederick County, Va., in the 1810 or 1820 censuses.

There were other mentions of James Luttrell, son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred, in the Allied Families book which required analysis.

"In a letter from my grandfather’s mother to him dated Oct. 13, 1810, says James Luttrell came from his brother Lewis in Greenfield, Highland Co., Ohio, that he was well and doing well." [Allied Families, p. 199.] And,

"In letter of John L. Luttrell, ante, (John, son of Andrew for explanation), he quoted from letter of 13 Oct. 1810, stating that James had visited his brother Lewis in Greenfield, Highland Co., Ohio." [ Stubbs, p. 56; Allied Families, p. 207.]

It was important to note respecting the first of these two citations that 'my grandfather’s mother' was a reference to Winifred (Lawrence) Luttrell since the writer was John L. Luttrell, son of Andrew Luttrell, grandson of John Luttrell and Rachel Leaper, and the great grandson of Winifred Luttrell. Winifred’s letter of Oct. 13, 1810, said that James came from his brother Lewis. It did not say to where James came. He was not living in Frederick County, VA, in 1810. Data already mentioned indicated that only brothers Fielding and Robert went to Frederick County, Va. What was meant in that letter by "he was well and doing well," was vague and ambiguous since the reference could have been either to Lewis in Ohio or to brother James. One may equivocate about which brother was "well and doing well" although the letter likely meant to infer that Lewis was doing well. But, Winifred may have learned this information from news from James and James may not have returned to Frederick County, Va., where he did not live. And no claim was made in that 1813 letter that James had visited his mother in Frederick County, Va. At least, no such claim was made in the Pritchard book. So where did James who visited his brother live? He lived in Shelby County, Kentucky. It was about 150 miles from Shelby County, Ky., to Highland Co., Ohio. It was about 500 miles from Frederick County, Va., to Highland Co., Ohio. Neither of the two citations about the trip to Ohio were evidence that the James mentioned therein was James who married Celia Catlett. It was worth repeating that James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett was born about 1789. This was outside the range of births of the issue of Winifred Luttrell, born ca. 1733. Also, James who married Celia did not appear in census data in Frederick County until 1830, some 17 years after the date of Winifred’s 1813 letter. Where he lived prior to 1830 was unknown. It was likely that he was living either with Fielding Luttrell (born abt. 1773) and/or with the Catletts in Frederick County, Va. After he married Celia and started a household, he then appeared in census data from 1830 to 1860 in Frederick County, VA. He was from a later generation than James Luttrell of Shelby County, Kentucky.

Since there were no other James Luttrells of the proper age and from Fauquier County that could have been the son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred but the James Luttrell born about 1764 and died 1852 in Shelby County, Kentucky, he was their son as indicated by process of elimination of alternatives and other circumstantial evidence. The given names of two of James Luttrell’s (b. 1764) sons were Lewis and Fielding, which were the names of two of James’ brothers. There were no such given names among the issue resultant from the James Luttrell/Celia Catlett marriage. Also, the Allied Families book claimed that James and Celia went to Tennessee. They did not has has been proven by census data. They lived in Frederick County, Virginia.

The date most often given in the literature for the birth of James Luttrell, son of John L. and Winifred, was 9 Feb. 1763, in Fauquier County, Virginia. Where this birth date originated was not known. It has not been documented. This date came closer to the birth date of James Luttrell (Shelby County, Ky.) than to the birth date of any other of the James Luttrells of the era. The same date was often given as the birth date for Lewis Luttrell, James’ brother, which suggested that James and Lewis were twins. This problem was a transcription error that was perpetuated by the copying of family trees. For proof of the year of birth of James Luttrell in 1764, see the 1850 federal census for Shelby County, Kentucky.

Some sons of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred, his wife, married later than was the general norm. These sons were teenagers and young men during the tumultuous years of the Revolutionary War. It was reasonable for them to have begun family life a few years later than the norm. For instance, Robert married Barbara Buzzard in 1796 when he was about 25 years of age; James married Elizabeth Wood in 1797 when he was about 33 years of age.

James Luttrell married Elizabeth Wood on or about June 9, 1797, in Fauquier County, Virginia. The bondsman was Lewis Waller. [See: John K. Gott. Fauquier County, Virginia, Marriage Bonds 1759-1854 and Marriage Returns 1785-1848. Heritage Books, Inc., p. 126.] Shortly thereafter, this couple migrated to Shelby County, Kentucky, where their second born child, Lewis, was born about 1800. His son, Fielding Luttrell, was born about 1809. James Luttrell was listed in the 1810 census for Shelby County, Kentucky, and in subsequent censuses for that county until he died in 1852.

James Lutteral (Luttrell born 1764) was an executor of the estate of his father-in-law, John Wood, in Shelby County, Kentucky. John Wood’s will mentioned that one of John’s daughters was Elizabeth Lutteral (Luttrell). [See: J. Estelle Stewart King. Abstracts of Early Kentucky Wills and Inventories, p.216. Reprinted Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co., 1961, 1969.]

The John Wood family had also migrated from Fauquier County, Virginia, to Shelby County, Kentucky. Interestingly, the Wood family was known to Richard Luttrell, the grandfather of James Luttrell of Shelby County, Kentucky, and also to his father, John Lewis Luttrell. There was this excerpt from the will of Richard Luttrell:

"I give to my dear Antiss Luttrell part of the land I bought off George Crump lying on the south side of Rock Run that runs from John Nelson’’s old field to William Rousaw’s mill bounded by Wood’s line ...etc." [See: Will of Richard Luttrell, Will Book 1, pp. 95-97, dated 9-27-1764, Fauquier County, Virginia.]

This data indicated that the Wood family lived nearby to the Luttrell family and provided further circumstantial evidence for James Luttrell of Shelby County, Kentucky, as having been the son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred Lawrence.

To summarize the data in this message, it was shown by census data that James Luttrell, born about 1789 in Virginia, and who married Celia Catlett, was not the son of John Lewis Luttrell. He was not the James Luttrell who visited his brother, Lewis, in Ohio because Lewis was not his brother. His father was not documented but Fielding Luttrell, born 1733 was indicated as a strong possibility. The question then was which James Luttrell was the son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred, his wife? By a process of elimination and using birth dates and information available on the internet, the only remaining James Luttrell from the era and from Virginia was the one born in 1764 as proven by census data. He was married in Fauquier County where John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred lived. He married Elizabeth Wood, daughter of John Wood. The Wood family was known to James’ father and to his grandfather as proven by the will of Richard Luttrell. These families lived in close proximity to one another and their lands were contiguous. There was enough circumstantial evidence to make this judgment. James Luttrell was born 6 years after John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred Lawrence had married about 1758. He named two of his sons in honor of his brothers, Lewis and Fielding Luttrell. No such evidence existed for any other James Luttrell.

On the basis of the available evidence and also because no evidence to the contrary existed, one can conclude that James Luttrell, born in 1764 in Virginia, and died 10 Aug. 1852, in Shelby County, Kentucky, was indeed the son of John Lewis Luttrell and Winifred (Lawrence) Luttrell.
_________
I was grateful to David Scifres for his diligent research and editing during the development of the treatise.
James Luttrell, Born 1763/65, Son of John L. Luttrell and Winifred Lawrence

Thank you to all the Luttrell family historians for your diligent work to sort the Luttrells and document them where possible. I have been working via travel and internet to fathom James Luttrell (et. al.), son of John Lewis Luttrell (JLL) and Winifred Lawrence (WL). There was much faulty data about him posted on internet sites. Most think that James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett was this son of JLL and WL. He was not.

The issue of the paternity of James Luttrell, born bet. 1763-1765, has been reopened and the matter is far from settled. The other James Luttrell (sometimes Litterel and other spellings) who appeared suddenly in the 1830 census for Frederick County, Virginia, was born about 1789-90 See, for example, the 1850 census for Frederick County, Va., which indicated that this James Luttrell's wife was "Selah" (Catlett), born about 1787. Therefore, this James Luttrell was NOT the son of John L. Luttrell and Winifred Lawrence as he was born a generation later. In this census, Celia was listed as "Selah" which was a rather obvious and aberrant spelling of the given name, Celia. [1850 Federal Census for Frederick County, Virginia, lines 13,14, p. 25 of 207 at Ancestry.] James Luttrell, the son of JLL and WL, was generally believed to have been born about 1763/65, some 25-27 years prior to the birth of James Luttrell who married Celia Catlett. I have not seen any documented evidence for this claim.

In the 1860 Federal Census for Frederick County, Virginia, there was James Luttrell and Cecelia (Celia) again. See lines 15, 16, p. 15 of 43 at Ancestry. By the time of the 1870 census, James was likely deceased. If he had been the son of JLL and WL born about 1763/5, he would have been nearly 100 years of age. This 1860 census entry corroborates the 1850 finding, above.

Most who claimed that James Luttrell who married Celia (Cecelia) Catlett had hung their hats on the book A History of Two Families, by Stubbs which was mentioned in the Allied Families book by Pritchard, and which was available on the internet. These books were confounding. The wills and land deeds mentioned in them were worthy documentation. However, much of the data concerning this James Luttrell (and many other Luttrells for that matter) was not documented and was merely hearsay at best. As such, it was highly unreliable. The claim that a James Luttrell married Celia Catlett was correct. Most interested family historians have gone on from there to claim that this James, born 1789/90, was the son of JLL and WL, born in 1763. I found no evidence or documentation to support such a claim. In fact, based upon census data and ages therein, these claims are patently false. Also, the 1763 date for the birth of James Luttrell, son of JLL and WL, seemed to have appeared out of thin air. I have found no documentation for it.

There were two Fielding Luttrells in Frederick County, Virginia, in the 1820 Federal Census. Neither can be found except by a line by line analysis of that census. I have never seen but one Fielding Luttrell mentioned as having been in Frederick County, Virginia, and he with his mother, Winifred in the 1810 census and appeared again in the 1830 census. This second Fielding Luttrell (Lutterel) was a new find. By 1820, Winifred was deceased. To find the other Fielding Luttrell, see Fielding L. Lutterel (Luttrell), in Berryville, Frederick County, Va., p. 3 of 4 at Ancestry. I speculated that he was a son of Fielding Luttrell, son of JLL and WL. For instance, while the will of Fielding, born abt. 1773/4 was available and mentioned no son named Fielding, Jr., it was well known that all heirs-at all were not always included in wills. Some of the reasons for these exclusions have been: death of the heir-at-law prior to the death of the father; a 'falling out' of sorts; a previous allocation of funds in lieu of inclusion in the will; the purchase or gift of land in lieu of inclusion in the will; and more. The senior Fielding Luttrell can also be found as 'Lutterel' in the same census as Fielding L. Lutterel and in the Middletown District on p. 5 of 11 at Ancestry. Middletown and Berryville are not distant from one another with Berryville a short distance south of Winchester and Middletown a short distance south of Winchester.

Another find in the 1820 Federal Census for Frederick County, Virginia, which only listed a Rebecca Luttrell in the indexed search, was that Sarah Luttrell was also living in the Pugh District. This was undoubtedly Fielding Luttrell's (b. ca 1773/4) unmarried sister. The line by line analysis, while quite time consuming, was worth the effort.

The Luttrell Family-'The Luttrell Psalter'-Early England

Our family descends from the Luttrell family in descent from Geoffrey de Luterel marr. Frethesant Paganelle. They were the Barons of Irnham in Lincolnshire. Geoffrey Luttrell, 4th Baron marr. Agnes Sutton & is famous for the famous 14thC Luttrell Psalter that Geoffrey commissioned. It is remarkable for its striking images of everyday life & even bizarre images done in rich colors & gold.
There is a page about it on Facebook. You can also 'google' it.
For more information & photos about the Luttrell's ancestry & descent & the Luttrell Psalter-go to my website:
pixleyblair.tribalpages.com
Type the name you are researching into the upper right 'Find' box & click.

Thank you for the heads up on their potential cemeteries. I have so many people buried in Pike County. When I return to Indiana I am taking pictures of all the graves I can find. If you have any you would wish for me to take and send to you, please let me know.
