My great grandmother was Ada violet Lye, Clara and Fredericks sister. She divorced my great grandfather and moved to Canada with her two daughters Olive and Gwen, leaving behind my grandfather with his father. Olive became a famous "American" artist doing beautiful, artistic lapidary work. Her surname is colhour and is easy to find on the net. I would really love any information you have on the Lyes. My father remembers some cousins but does not know when or why the famuly or part of the family came to NZ. I have traced Robert Lye back to the Turnbridge Wells but not any other details.

Josiah Lye (1843)

Josiah was the son of Hezekiah Lye and Catherine Gaulton and was born in December 1843 in Wilton (Burcombe) Wiltshire England.I cannot find any records of him after the 1861 Census when he was about 17. Can anyone help? i found prison records and record of a J Lye emigrating to Australia. Help will be gratefuly received.

i apologise for taking so long to reply. I forget to read the threads. I would like to have any info you have. I rather gathered Robert had got together with somebody else.
It was quick wasn't it.
I am searching now for Maria's brother Josiah (born dec 1843)I have no records beyond 1861. I have found entries in the prison records and in the emigration records to Australia for J. Lye. I wonder where he went. Perhaps he changed his name or something. Best wishes Ann

Hi, I just stumbled across your query. Clara Rose Lye was my great-grandfather's sister. He was Frederick Lye, born Tunbridge Wells, Kent in 1881. I have access to quite a bit of information on his branch of the family if your friend is interested.

I just saw your message about George John Lye when I was looking for the same family. My husband is descended from William Lye (1760-1818) and Jane Loring, who are also George John's ancestors. They came originally from Somerset, and I'd been wondering why I couldn't find George John in England after the 1911 census. I found him travelling to the USA in 1913 and then in other records for Connecticut. I have information on the Lye family if you're still interested, and a few photos of more recent generations including my husband's great-grandmother Maria Richards (nee Lye). Maria would have been an aunt of George's.

Thanks very much for this. Since my last post I have got back on the track of Robert (Maria's husband). He and Maria moved by 1881 to Hursely, Hampshire, in 1891 they were in Southwick, Sussex, and in 1901 Maria died in Feb and in April Robert was living in Shoreham on the Sussex coast. By 1911 he had moved inland to Petworth, Sussex and according to the census had remarried to a lady called Mary Ann, but I haven't traced this marriage and suspect it never happened. I don't yet know when or where he died. I have some details of his children if you need them, just let me know.

all I can say is that he married Maria Lye on 24th December
1846- Parish records Wilton.Maria Lye was Mary Lye's sister. Mary was my husband's gt grandmother. My husband's
grandmother Edith Payne/ Matthews was 94 when she died in 1971and I wish I had asked her a lot of questions. She lived in Wilton all her life and a lot of relatives lived in Shrewton.

Are you still out there looking for information on William Lye? I may be able to help with their sons Percy Malcom and Sydney Herbert Lye. Both stopped off for a spell at Manitoba and Sakatchewan Canada and married sisters from the Fry family. Eventually both families mad their way out to British Columbia, Canada's West coast.

Thanks very much for this. I had obtained a copy of their marriage certificate which confirms Maria's father's name as Hezekiah but it's nice to find a link. Do you happen to know what happened to Robert Williams and/or his children? I can't trace them after 1901 and the rest of my father's family lost touch many years ago.

Looking for information re Robert Williams b 1847 in Shrewton, Wiltshire, England, eldest son of Adam Williams and Ann nee MUNDAY. Robert was married 1870 to Maria LYE of Wilton, Wilts (who died Feb 1901), children Harry (b?1875), Edith (?1877), Willie (?1878), Rose (?1879) Emma (1881), Kate (1883), Albert (?1884) Frank (?1886). In 1901 census Robert was living at 5 Butts Road, Southwick, Sussex, employed as bricklayer's labourer, but had earlier been a shepherd at Wilton (1871) Hursley (Hants) 1881 and Lyminster (W Sussex) 1891. He was my great grandfather George Williams's eldest brother and the rest of the family lost touch with him at an early stage.

In 1881 he is in the 1881 British Census with the following information:

Florance M., 7, London, Middlesex
Ada E., 3, Coventry, Warwickshire
Sydney H., , Coventry, Warwickshire

Address: 23 Spon End, Coventry, St. Michael, Warwickshire.

William and Elizabeth are my g-g-grandparents through Sydney H. Lye. Sydney moved to Canada and died in Vancouver in 1959.

The family has always heard that the 2 daughters stayed in England and never married and that the William H. moved to Australia and became a minister or priest. Any assistance would be appreciated.
