I an new at all of this also. I noticed on your pedigree that you show John Wesley 1769 married to Polly but I have found that the John Wesley of 1769 is not the correct Lyle. There is a John Wesley Lyle born around 1791 and married to Mary Webb that would be the correct Lyle but finding the information is hard. I beleive without looking at my notes you can find him on the 1950 census and you can tell that the dates dont' match. It is like a generation is jumped. The Lyle of 1769 might be the Lyle of 1791's father but trying to provide. If I have further I will let you know.

A Fanny Lyles married a Jeremiah Hynson in Roane County, in 1815. Robert Lyle was a signer. He may have been her uncle. Some Roane County rumor, refers to her as possibly being a Jefferson County, Lyle.

Still searching for clues to this mystery.

I am not sure our family is related to the "Baron Lyll's of Duchall", which I assume was a location in Renfrewshire County. In my gr-gr-gr-uncle's 1922 scrapbook, he pursues this issue quite thoroughly, quoting from various research of his father and Crawford's History of Renfrewshire. His conclusion was there was "legend" for the claim, but "no documentary evidence....that can be considered conclusive."

Since I posted this notice about William E. Lyle, I have learned he was born in the U.S. and died as an infant. There are others by the same name from several hundred years ago.

My gr-gr-grandfather Robert Lyle was born in 1822 and died in 1902 -- all in Greenock, Scotland.

Hi, I was wondering where you got your info of the original Lyle having come with the Norman conquest and even specifically who gave him the land. As far as I had read it was merely speculation that he received the lands as a result of service to William the Conqueror.

Also do you know why it was named "Duchal"? Because by the time it came down to me the story was that he was "from the Ducal Castle" in Renfrewshire (implying he was a Duke) and I know that is not so.

My family is through Robert C. Lyle who came from Devonshire to Bridgeport through Canada in 1850. In the history of Bridgeport is where I find recorded his claim to being related to the Lyle of Ducal Castle and also to William Wallace. I find a similar claim recorded in a Bay City historical document of a Rev. Lyle as to his heritage. Not that I can trace it there, but I am nonetheless interested in the history of the Lyles of Duchal Castle as a result and would like to know where you get your info?

Thank you
Mad Anthony

Does anyone know if this house still stands?
The Lyle ancestral home as described in LYLE FAMILY, by Oscar K. Lyle, 1912 :
...The pre-American home of the Lyles is in the townland of Browndodd, one of the four towns of the parish of Larne. It stands on the north side of the road from Larne to Raloo, and near Raloo.A lane runs from the road to the house. John Snoddy was living in it in 1911. About a quarter mile east of the Lyle home is the townland of Ballyvallagh, wherein was the home of the Blairs, two Blairs married into the Lyle family.

My guesses about the name change can be a variety of reasons. 1. being the father was a criminal creating a infamous last name. 2. The children could have been born out of wedlok. I have also seen the several of the books about Lyles.

This one continues to bother me and I continue to search for the paternal part of this line. All the best to you.
Sarah

I was able to get back to Addison through the census records. Everything before that has come from the Lyle Family book I purchased. That has me back to the family in Ireland. I have seen the marriage but have not been able to figure why the Lyle name would have been kept.
Lary

Just found your post. Have you found any further info on this line? I descend from Claiborne Lyle, another of Fanny's sons. I found a marriage of a Fanny Lyles to Jeremiah Hynson in Roane County, August 7, 1807. She would have been 17 or 14 depending on birthdates found. One of the bondsman was a Robert Lyle, possibly Fanny's uncle. I found no evidence of the couple after that time. How did you find Addison born in Roane County? I'd love to share any information or even speculation with you.
Sarah

I have connected Frank Highland Lyle (1859 - 1924)as the son of William Lyle and Mary Stauffer. William Lyle was born in 1836 to John Lyle and Dorathy Lyle (1795 - 1867) and William died in Lancaster County PA in 1910. William (1836 - 1910) can be found in the 1850 census of Lancaster County PA with his mother and siblings. I am still looking for Dorathy's maiden name, Mary Stauffer's family, and John Lyle's birth date, death date and parents. Williams siblings were Eliza Lyle born 1826 and died unmarried about 1896, Atlee Lyle 1837 - 1865, Margaret Lyle Witmer (wife of John W Witmer) born 1831. Is anyone else researching this Lyle line?
