Hi,
While doing some research on my father's family, I came across your geneology reserach. Ada Lyness was my father, George Edward Lyness' sister and thus my aunt. My father, George, was born May 14, 1907 and died in March of 1978. We didn't have much contact with the family back in Fondu Lac Wisconsin as we lived in Washington State. I would be interested in any information that you might have especially in regards to living relatives. I don't think any of my dad's 4 sisters are still alive. We used to get calls from Ada occasionally but she was the only one who contacted us. I am the youngest of 7 (53 yrs old) from my dad's marriage to my mother, Leona Abbott, who proceded him in death in 1969. I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks, Patty Lyness Davis
I think (but I'm not 100% certain) that his parents were Thomas Lyness and Mary Anne McCormick, born 1830 and 1829 respectively. Around 1855 they left Ireland for Scotland. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Martin

It may well have come from Vikings who went both to Scotland and Normandy. Also Russsia.

There is a village of Lyness on the Orkney Island of Hoy.

A great aunt told me that the LYNESS had fled from France to Northern Irelend during the whole Hugenot persecution and such. Haven't reserched that story yet.

If I find out the origin I will let everyone know.

A-hah!
This explains why there is a 'Lyness' as a middle or first name in every one of my GRIFFIN generations.
My earliest GRIFFIN - Capt. George GRIFFIN who married Jane TAYLOR 13 Oct 1812 at Stromness, Orkney, may well have come from Lyness (have only got as far back as their marriage; no parents of birthplace/dates).
These GRIFFINs ended up in Sydney, Australia c.1825, and I have noted a LYNESS family who were also in Sydney at the same time (using same church etc.) but could never find a connection. Info below is what I've found:
Henry and Jane (nee?)LYNESS had two girls (Jane died Nsw age 31 in 1851):
Martha b. 1844 Sydney marr. Ethelbert CLEMESHA (b.1847) Nsw 1868
Emma b. 1849 Sydney marr. John HOWELL Nsw 1872

There was a Jane LYNASS who married Harry DIBLEY Nsw 1860
Also a Michael & Margaret LYNESS and family arrived at Port Jackson, Australia in 1841 aboard the 'Marquis of Bute'.
I have only noted the LYNESS / LYNASS that I could find as there were too many LYNE's to try and work out.
Hope this helps some-one
Cheers
Marty in Qld
