Hi Carole
Thankyou for your reply. My link is via Joseph Henry Barlow - I have quite an extensive chart of the Barlows, Lomax and Gormley families. One of your links in GOOGLE says that Augustus and Barbara are your husband 2 x great grandfather - where do your husband and yourself fit in.
Please phone on 01274 560244 and I will be happy to ring you back.
There is a peculiarity in that you say that Barbara married John Lawson in 1878 but she is listed in the 1871 census as Barbara Lawson and living with her "stepsons Ewing and Joseph" who were aged 10 and 8. The word "Step" can only be an error but the name Lawson is odd !
Yours
Wally Quirk

Hi

Augustus Barlow and Barbara McDonald married in Toxteth Park Lancashire 19/1/1860. According to their marriage certificate, he was 25 and she was 20. He was a mariner and his father Charles was a shipwright.

I did find an Augustus Barlow (sailor) in Liverpool in the 1851 census. he was living in lodgings with other mariners but his age is a bit out. He (or possibly someone else) gave his age as 22 then and the census says he was born in Russia and was a foreign subject.

Augustus and Barbara had two sons born in Liverpool and these were Ewen McDonald Barlow (1861) and Joseph Henry Barlow (1863).

Augustus had died before the 1871 census and Barbara remarried in 1878. Her second husband was a Danish mariner called John Lawson and she had a son with him named John William Lawson.

Do you have anything else on this Augustus Barlow?

Macdonald and Fraser families from Dingwall

I am looking for descendents of the MacDonald and Fraser families from Dingwall, Ross-shire who may be related to me.

My great, great, great Aunt was Barbara Mary MacDonald nee Mackenzie (1834-1916). Her husband was Lewis MacDonald (1820-1885)and they lived in Dingwall. Their 3 children were Thomas (1862-1928), Barbara (1865 - 1949) and William (1867- ?).

Thomas Macdonald was a doctor in Beauly, Inverness and was married to Robina Jessie Macgregor (1864-?). They had one daughter Anne Louisa Macdonald (1894-1941) who was also a doctor and was married to Charles Wellwood Rubridge (1896-1948)

William Macdonald was a research scientist for Rio Tinto in London in 1890. In 1909 I believe he worked for the British Consular service in China. I do not know who he married but I am very sure he had a son called Derry Macdonald.

Barbara A Fraser nee Macdonald was married to James Fraser (1855-1910) and they had 8 children:
1) Jessie Fraser born in Dingwall in 1887.
2) Catherine Mackenzie Fraser born in Dingwall in 1890 and died in Epsom,Surrey in 1956. She was married to Neville Aldridge Holdaway (the author known as N.A. Temple-Ellis).
3) James Fraser born in Dingwall in 1891.
4) Lewis Macdonald Fraser born in Dingwall in 1893 and also died there in 1958.
5) Barbara Mary Fraser born in Dingwall in 1895.
6) John Thomas Fraser born in Dingwall in 1896.
7) William Macdonald Fraser born in Dingwall in 1899.
8) Robert Whyte Fraser born in Dingwall in 1900. He attended Glasgow University 1921 to 1924 and was in the RAF reserve during WW2. He died in Dingwall in 1986.

In 1901 the Fraser family lived at 4 Station Rd, Dingwall and I think this is where parents Barbara and James Fraser lived for the rest of their lives.
According to what I found on the internet, I believe Georgina Danhauser and my great grandfather John Danhauser were siblings, and they were the children of Gustav and Fredericka Danhauser. I always heard they John was from Cananda and then moved to Michigan (Cass City/Bad Axe area). I assume that John was also born in Southampton, Ontario then.
Write back if you can. Thank you. toddpizzuti@yahoo.com

Hello. We are blood relations. Your grandmother Maude Danhauser and my grandfather Guy Danhauser were siblings. (My mother was Irma Denhauser the daughter of Guy and Mina Denhauser). That means we share the same great-grandparents. I found this great website that gives a lot of information going back to our great great grandparents, it was great. Email me if you would like more info. I always was interested in tracing my roots. I don't remember Maude much because I believe she passed away in 1970 and I was just a little boy then. It would be great to hear from you, email me if you would like to. toddpizzuti@yahoo.com

Hi Jim
I don't have any information on my g-grandfather Alexander's siblings, if any, so I don't know if he had a brother Angus. I believe I found Alexander's death certificate which states that his father was John B MacDonald from Scotland and his mother was Catherine MacDonald from Antigonish. What I know about Alexander: They lived in Thorburn, Pictou county Nova Scotia. Alexander married Annie McInnis and they had John Angus MacDonald (my grandfather). Annie died soon after John was born and Alexander married her sister Catherine and they had two more sons, Hilary and Donald. Both my grandfather and g-grandfather were Coal Miners. That's all I got.
Hugh

Dear Hugh,

I'm seeking information on my gg-grandfather John Macdonald, who was married to a Catherine and lived in the Antigonish area. Their son Angus, born 1854, was my great-grandfather. He was a sea captain and died in St. John, New Brunswick in 1900. He had three wives and four children who made it past infancy, including my grandfather John and his brothers William, Hugh and Walter. If there's any connection, please let me know!

Yeah! A family member just sent me a hand written family genealogy done by a now deceased ancestor - It confirms some siblings I had figured out on my own (though never really had confidence in). Plus, gave me many more names - Unfortunately, I don't have any real data or dates and knowing how common these names are - may not help to list the info - but here goes...

Alexander MacDonald of Gairloch, Scotland m. ? was Kepper of the guns and huntsman for the Duke of Edinburgh.
had Murdoch (who remained in Scotland and was Kepper of the Crown jewles and of William Wallace's Sword)
(Murdoch had:

William, Alexander (went to New Zealand), Murdoch, John, Donald, Mary, Isabel, Annie, Helen, Sophia)
Roderick
John
Duncan (my great great grandfather)
Jessie

Duncan was born circa 1799 and I believe arrived to Cape Breton, Boularderie Island with wife Anne MacLellan in 1831. They lived for sometime on what family says was land granted from the King on Boularderie (to whom I am not sure - also not sure which other siblings of Duncan's or Anne's came over.

They had
Alexander (who had John, William, Mary, Henry, Harriet, Austin, Lillie)
Murdoch (who had Hannah, Tillie, Mamie(?) - all who died of TB - Roderick, Cahrles, Annie)
John (who had Josie - John died young enough that "josie was raised by other family)
Donald (died in infancy)
Duncan (stonecutter - died at age 25)
Donald (my great grandfather - moved to Mass, USA - married Janet Scott Anderson, had 12 kids)
Roderick (had John, William, George, Mary)
Margaret (married a McLeod)
Mary - or May Ellen (married a MacDonald had Janet and Nena) (later married Capt John MacMillan, Uncle of Donald Baxter MacMillan - who was from Cape Breton)
Isabella (married a McLeod - had Duncan, Annie, Dolly)

Hopefully something here rings a bell for someone...

It's certainly possible. I had been under the impression that Catherine outlived John, but I don't really know that for sure. I'd be interested in seeing what info you have on the Bailey Brook Macdonalds. On marriage licenses, Angus listed his place of birth as "Antigonish," but anything is possible.

Jim C.
Colchester, vt
I'm new to this service, so please excuse me if this email is not useful to you.

I'm from Mallaig and remember 'Katie the Shoemaker' from when I was a child. I believe her husband was actually the Shoemaker. Perhaps there is some connection.

I'd be happy to ask my father about this. He is still in the village and is old enough to remember people from the early part of the last century.

Let me know if you are interested.

Al the best
Might his parents have been from Bailey's Brook, just across the county border from Antigonish? I have information on John and Catherine MacDonald of that town. Catherine died at some point and her husband was referred to as "Widow John".

Angus Macdonald

Looking for any information about the family of Captain Angus Macdonald, born 1854 in Antigonish son of John and Catherine Macdonald. Angus died in 1900 in St. John, New Brunswick. He had married three times: Rosella Cody (or Coady) who died at sea in 1883; Minnie McDermott of St. John who died in 1897; and Joicy Perry Weyman who died in Los Angeles in 1951. A well-known sea captain at the time, Angus was at one time the captain of the Nicosia, though not when the ship was in a famous shipwreck off Sable Island (a nameplate from the Nicosia is displayed at the Maritime Museum in Halifax). Although he and Rosella were in St. John (or off at sea), the two oldest children, John A. Macdonald and Walter S., were sent to school at Saint Francis Xavier in Antigonish because of a relative who was an instructor there. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Hi Gordon, I'm a second generation Canadian, whose paternal grandparents both came from Lewis. My grandfather spelt his name in all three variants at various times in his life. My grandmother, apparently, spelt hers "MacD" as her maiden name (she was from another part of Lewis than my grandfather) and then "Macd" after marriage to my grandfather.

My father used to tell me that, since the Second World War, there has been some attempt to standardize on:
"MacD" means highlander;
"Macd" means islander; and
"McD" were the Northern Irish, some of whom got there by way of Harris/ Uist/ Barra and others by way of the Highland Clearances.

I don't know how much truth there is in any of it. I suppose the Clan Donald organization in Skye would be the ultimate authority on any "official" meanings.

MacDonald DNA Testing

As a McConnell researcher, I'd like to encourage MacDonald researchers and others researching names that are variants of MacDonald to participate in the Clan Donald DNA Project. Males who carry the surname MacDonald or a variant may participate by joining the project. Females and males who are interested in researching MacDonald lines but don't carry the Y chromosomes of those lines may participate by encouraging MacDonald males from those lines to participate.

I encourage all MacDonald researchers to visit the outstanding website of the Clan Donald DNA Project. Even if you are not interested in testing, you might find out something useful, especially if your line is related to the MacDonald clan chiefs. If you are interested in testing, this very informative and educational website is a must-see:

http://dna-project.clan-donald-usa.org/DNAmain.htm

This is an excellent time to look into Y chromosome DNA testing. For some dads, testing for themselves or a relative would make an excellent Father's Day gift.

Kirsten Saxe
