Hi Michael!
Thaddeus was my gg-grandfather with his first wife Susan Jane Vaughan. I have alot of information on this family, like Thaddeus being the 14th of 14 children. Ella's mother was Susan Marion Pelot. She was born 27 Dec 1833 in GA and died 30 May 1908 in Jacksonville, FL. She married Thaddeus, as his second wife, and her 3rd marriage. She was married 1st to Charles Clifford Stewart on 12 Dec 1852 and 2nd to Thaddeus' brother, Donald Roderick on 23 Nov 1861. Charles died 23 May 1857 and Donald died 12 Oct 1863. She married Thaddeus 26 Apr 1872 in Gainesville, Alachua, Florida - by W J McCormick. Susan's parents were John Cooper Pelot and Sarah Ann Crews. She had two children with each of her three husbands.

Thaddeus' (and Donald Roderick's) parents were Ferdinand Donald MacDonell and Sarah Bulia Pelot. Susan Marion Pelot's father, John Cooper Pelot was the nephew of Sarah Bulia (Pelot) MacDonell. The Pelot's and MacDonell's will make your head swim!

If you would like any more information on this side of the family, you can contact me through my profile page.

Happy Hunting!
Mary

Hello,
Thaddeus Alfred MacDonell is my great grandfather, by way of my paternal grandmother Ella Belle MacDonell (Adams). I grew up in Jacksonville, FL, and now live in Davis CA. I have been active in Ancestry.com for about the last 4 or 5 months. I don't have much original information about that side of my family, but continue to look.

Cheers,
Michael MacDonell Adams

Hi Janice
info tidbit for you..
Ann Eliza's maiden name IS Annable. She's probably the daughter of Srgt. John Annable of the RRNY.

The marriage record of Duncan King McDonnell to Agnes Emma Duncan lists both their fathers: Alexander McDonnell and Thomas Dunne.

Alexander McDonnell is the son of Alexander King McDonnell and the father of John King McDonell and was deceased before 1890.

There seems to be a pattern of Duncan King McDonnell's family being protestant and John King McDonell's family being catholic.

and of course, McDonnell=MacDonnell=McDonald=MacDonald

Kim
Rob,

In the 1852 Census for Lancaster, Glengarry there is the following family:

9	McDonell, Angus	Farmer	G. C.W. Roman Catholic 9	F

Jane would have been about this age in 1852 and her father is Angus. This may not be yours as I found the marriage of Antoine and Jane as follows:

They were married at Nativity B.V.M in Williamstown 04 Feb 1868 and Jane's parents were Angus and Isabella MacDonald (Not spelled MacDonell)

Col Angus MacDonell was born 1791 and died 01 June 1842.

The parent of Angus were Allan Ban and Henrietta MacDonell.

Angus was first married to a Mary Watson and on 21 Aug 1831 in Alexandria they had a daughter Henrietta Ann.

Angus and Isabella had a daughter Mary Sarah 16 Jan 1831 in Alexandria.

Allan Ban and Henrietta had a daughter Janet born 1776 and died 29 June 1849 at 73 years at Lanc 6 Lot 30. She was married to Alexander MacDonell and also to Alexander MacDonald son of Angus son of Alexander.

There is an Allan MacDonell Esquire died 13 Dec 1826 St. Raphael's born Nislagan, Scotland 1748. Present Lieutenant Angus MacDonell, Donald MacDonell, Esquire and Doctor Dunlop and a great many attendants. This "may" be your Allan Ban.

21 July 1842 - 2/6 paid for a Mass requested by Janet MacDonell from Kingston nian Allain bhain (dau of Fair Allan) for her 2 sisters Bell and Magdelain, 1 brother Col. Angus and for her father and mother Allan Ban and Henriette MacDonell, nian fir a chdara, and for her daughter Flory MacDonell, the wife of Duncan MacDonell.

Col Angus MacDonald 23 July 1840 gave to the church 3 wheat, 3-3/4 peas, 4-3/4 oats and 1/4 barely.

Allan MacDonell died 04 Sept 1868 Alexandria son of Col. Angus MacDonell at ? age years.

If you search the Morman site there you will find the Col. and Isabella and a list of seven children. There is other information there but some of it does not agree with some of the above so check it out before using it.

Tal

I am looking for the parents/family of John Duncan MacDonell born 2 March 1884 in East Ontario. He immigrated to the US in 1905 and married Susan Louise McWilliams and settled in Chicago, IL. It is possible that he father's name was William but I have no actual data to prove that. I do know that John Duncan MacDonell came from a Catholic family. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Ruth in FL

Some of us are merely researching our ancestors without any previous experience or knowledge and have no idea what history or culture they were apart of until we know who they are. Which happens to be their names and dates. If that is so bizarre, we apologize. And if you are still alarmed, I suggest that you post a little of this insight you aparently have on the Glengarry people's history.

Afterall, names and dates are the starting point and their story is what makes researching worthwhile.

Hello
I don't have anyone by that name in my tree, but that doesn't mean they don't belong. Can you give me a little more info to work with besides names? Like, birthdate, birth place, etc. And, why you think that Donald John would be related to Ferdinand? I'll be glad to help you if I can...even if it's another Mc/MacDonell family.
Mary

Lewis McDonald Westchester NY Inverness Strathspey 1709-77

I am looking for the ancestors of Lewis McDonald born 1709 in Inverness-shire. He emigrated to New York and became a wealthy farmer in Bedford township, Westchester county. His grave marker is inscribed: "Sacred to the memory of COL LEWIS MCDONALD ESQ and Sarah [Rumsey] his wife being a native of North Britain borne at Strathspey 1709 and departed this life 24 July 1777. He was a fervent Anglican. Throughout the first half of the eighteenth century, the Church struggled along with support of an English institution called the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. In 1744 Lewis McDonald petitioned the Society for assistance in building a church and obtaining a minister.
His name may have been spelled MacDonald, MacDonell, or MacDonnell elsewhere.
I was happy to see your post. I am trying to connect the dots of who's who in my family tree based on a will I have that names my great grandmother as his great grand niece.

The will is that of John Alexander Macdonell of the town of alexandria in the county of glengarry, Esquiure, Barrister-at-law.

I saw Miles Macdonell, Lord Selkirks Governor of Assiniboia and his father "spanish John" named in the will too.

My great grandmother was Mary Mcphee and her mother was Mary Catherine Mcdonald, daughter of Duncan Alex Macdonald and Georgina Henriette MacDonell.
Sorry to have been absent for several years, but am back. Hope you get this. It could well be that your Roderick is bro. of Alexander, Peter, and Donald (Fernando). Reason: Alexander had a son named Daniel and daughter named Catherine (I think - doing this off the top of my head), both of whom moved west, eventually landing in Alabama. Daniel could have been living in Talbott Co. then, perhaps; or maybe Daniel was a family name, and Roderick had a son named Daniel, also. At least Daniel isn't as common a MacDonell name as Donald or Alexander! In fact, that's the only Daniel I know of in that time frame.
Again, I hope you get this; I'd like to discuss w/you.
Hello All MacDonell's
I'm very interested in all information for Ferdinand Donald MacDonell and Alexander Harrison MacDonell. I believe that I'm related to these people through my gg-grandfather, Thaddeus Alfred MacDonell (b. 07 Feb 1831, Amelia Island, FL and d. 05 Mar 1901, Jacksonville, FL). He would've been Alexander's brother and Ferdinand's son. He married twice, Janie Vaughn abt 1860 and Susan Marion Pelot abt 1870. Susan was also married to Thaddeus' brother, Donald Roderick MacDonell (b. 13 Mar 1823, Amelia Island and d. ?, possibly Alachua Co., Gainesville, FL).
Thanks for all.
Mary

Thank you for your question. With regard to your MacConnells, it is impossible that they would be connected with the MacDonells of Glengarry. All of those on the 1773 exodus stayed in Canada. Where your MacConnells would have come from is Antrim or Kintyre, once territory of the MacDonalds or MacDonnells of Clan Iain Mhor. Many of this branch of Clan Donald ended up in Pennsylvania.

MacConnell can be a rendering of the Gaelic name Mac Dhòmhnuill - the "Dh" is Gaelic almost sounding like a "G", and turning into MacGonnell or MacConnell.

Clann Dhòmhnuill
Board Administrator

My wife's family goes back to 1790 in Glengarry on mother's side (McKinnon) and 1802 on her father's side (McDonald/McDonell).

I'm just starting to go to the Internet looking for many of the relatives who left Glengarry for the US in the late 1800's. I have spent considerable time in the last few years updating several old family trees that were researched extensively in the 1970's but missing many pertinent things such as dates etc- still have work to do locally.During the last few years have monitored the Glengarry web site and have picked up several long missing relatives.

Again thank you.

Paul.

Will go direct and use your email address as I believe its is:

lundquis@sytekcommunications.com

Will gladly share any information with you.

Again I apologize for the delay.

Have a good day.

Paul.
luscombe@glen-net.ca

My grandfather Alphonse MacDonnell came from Scotland- (Rock & Raven clan) & began his family here in Canada. Not sure, WHY he came over to Canada.

I have only heard that we have a castle somewhere ????

He died in 1920.

This is a very short note, as I am just beginning my search.

1853 Pogrom of Knoydart

In early 1853, after suffering death and disease from the great hunger, the last people of Glengarry and Knoydart were "served with summonses of removal" - meaning they were to be forced out of their homes. They had no choice in the matter. They were to be forcibly moved to Australia, but for unkown reasons Upper Canada was chosen for them instead, where they would join their Glengarry brethren in the county of that name. The historian Norman MacDonald writes of this pogrom on page 166 in his history of the MacDonells of Glengarry, "The Clan Ranald of Knoydart and Glengarry";

"A ... ship by the name Sillery was provided at the Isle [of] Ornsay, in the Isle of Skye to recieve them. Scenes of the most heartrending description ensued. A few families, mainly cottars, who refused to go ... watched helplessly as their homes were burnt to the ground and their meagre belongings thrown out beside them. No mercy was shown and whole families were left exposed to the weather without any kind of shelter whatever. Sheep were considered more profitable than people ... [and not everyone] survived the rigour of a desperate voyage across the Atlantic."

Clann Dhòmhnuill
Board Administrator

Paul, thank you for your contribution to my board.

I must ask you - are you aware or in any way interested in the history of the people of Glengarry? We are inheritors to a history, heritage, culture and identity that is craved and envied by people in many countries.

The question must be asked - why does anyone really care about dull names and dates alone, that without an understanding of the history and culture involved, have almost no meaning or tangible resonance?

Clann Dhòmhnuill
Board Administrator

History of the MacDonells

I find it frankly alarming and bizarre that there are loads of messages about names and dates, but apparently no one here who has posted has any idea as to the history of the people of Glengarry.

What is the point at all of knowing you are descended from X MacDonell, without any idea of the history involved or the culture they were/are part of?

Clann Dhòmhnuill
Board Administrator
