Drummond family descended from Rob Roy MacGregor

We are researching and establishing our hereditary links backwards and forwards from John Drummond (born 1796 in Scotland) who married (16 May 1824) Marjory MacGregor (born 1806 - St Fillans, Lochearn Head, Scotland) in Scotland. We discovered that John's fathers' surname was MacGregor (his first name John) and he would have been alive about 1765.

We also learned that John MacGregor, as an adult, was living at Glenednick. At some point he gave up the lease of his holding and moved about 4 miles to Ochtertyre, near Crieff, and worked on the Murray estate then owned by Sir Patrick and later by Sir William. At some point during this time John changed his surname to Drummond and the family has held that name since.

We have since discovered that this John MacGregor/Drummond b. 11 April 1764 who married (21 Feb 1785) Elizabeth Gardener b. 8 Aug 1761 and lived at Quoig Cottage, Monzievaird, Strathearn, Scotland where they had 8 or 9 sons, Alexander, William, James, John, Peter, Thomas, Gregor, Joseph and possibly a Duncan, and 2 daughters Janet and Margaret. Their christening records show the place as Muthill. We do have all, except Duncan's, birth or christening dates. It may be that Duncan died at birth????

John (born 1796), the first mentioned John Drummond above, emigrated to New Zealand along with his wife, Marjory [Christened as May], and 7 of their 10 children on 18 April 1855 on board the "Sir William McNab" arriving 8 August 1855 at Nelson. Left behind were Peter, John and Margaret.

We have established some full dates of birth, marriages and deaths and we have the year of most of them but we are missing quite a lot as well. Any recorded stories/history of the ancestors of John Drummond born 1796 would be gladly received.
In 2006 we were saying we would especially like to learn more of the three children; Peter, John and Margaret, left behind in Scotland.
We have now (August 2010) managed to identify:
Peter b. 28 Nov 1827, married [18 Mar 1849] Elizabeth Lyall b. abt 1829 and at least some if not all of his immediate family [John b. abt 1850, David b. abt 1857, Cathrine b. abt 1859, Marjory b. abt 1861 – died young before 1871, William b. abt 1863, James b. abt 1865 and Elisabeth b. abt 1869] through census records. Whatever became of these children? Someone from this family will surely see this and be able to fill in some gaps for us?? We would love to hear from you.
We have also learned that John b. 12 Jan 1830, married Isabella (surname unknown) who had at least one son John b. 12 Jul 1856 but we do not know about any other offspring or what happened to them. Do you?
And we found that Margaret b. abt 1833 married George Smith Duncan and had two boys William b. abt 1862 in New York USA and Arthur b. abt 1867 also in New York USA. Margaret & George then appear to have moved back to Scotland and gave birth to 3 girls; Elizabeth b. abt 1869, Helen b. abt 1873, and Margaret and also two boys; George and Frederick. We know that Frederick came to NZ on a visit to see his relatives got sick and died whilst here. What happened to the rest of these children? Who and where are their offspring? Love to hear from you.
Of Alexander (son of John MacGregor/Drummond and Elizabeth Gardiner) we also have a lot of information available to us through another family member, a direct descendant of his. Alexander emigrated to New Zealand on the same boat as John & Marjory.

We have much information to share with those who are able to help including some old photos. We are keen to hear from anyone who thinks they may be able to help with our quest.

Of more recent times we now have a set of possible links back as far as Rob Roy MacGregor (1671-1734), to his father Lt. Colonel MacGregor and beyond into MacGregor history. This has been supported by DNA testing back as far as Eoin Cam MacGregor.
In fact there are reports of him harassing people, and demanding they give him their information. As if he has a right to it.... to their info.

Of the 85000 people he claims to have researched, many of the researched names are stolen, and have many errors.

He has also chosen to post living people's information, without consulting them first, or ever. People have requested that he remove their private info, and even their names and gedcom info (because they are not related).
The man so far has adamantly refused to remove living people's information, even at their request to do so.

Beware of what you share with this person. He has no respect for privacy.

James is to be found in 1851 census at Kilmahog near Callander Scotland, birthplace St Helena, South Atlantic. Which is a stopping off point for journey to India [ Mac Gregors were big in the East India company]. As for Lady Margaret that came from James son Daniel b.1870's after they moved to Scotlandwell - my GG Grandfather - who told my Aunt and mother. A friend of mothers managed to get a viewing of the family tree of the clan chief and there was a Margaret daughter of Sir Robert d. 1839 I have yet to trace "Sir Robert but he could be Sir Johns brother Colonel Robert MacGregor Murry, though he died 1831. You can contact me at dba@combinersoftware.com

Tom,
Well I do not have a Ellen or Helen that might be your ancestor. I do have "all" the siblings of
John (b.1796)and also of his father (another John b. 1764). The last birth to the latter mentioned John was recorded as being on 17 December 1805. Of the 11 children to this individual only two were females (Jannet b. 1788 and Margaret b. 1791). The siblings of John b. 1764 (7 children recorded to date) ranged from 1762 - 1776 (two females; Jannet and Cathrine).
We do have a few Helen Drummonds, the oldest (b. 1837)without any further information available (not yet researched)outside of her parentage in our tree but she immigrated from Scotland with her parents to New Zealand in 1855.
If of any use to you I can send you the birth dates and names of which ever range of siblings you think might be of help to your research?
Regards
Grant Drummond
Titirangi
New Zealand

Re: Drummond family descended from Rob Roy MacGregor

I find your post of interest!!

I have spoken family history that we descend from Rob Roy MacGregor, but have been unable to work it back to date.

My possible connection would be who I know was Ellen (sometimes shown as Helen) Drummond who was my G G Grandmother. Our family also knows her as Ellen MacGregor/McGregor. One of her Sons did have a middle name of MacGregor/McGregor. Also, her Daughter's death notice shows her Mother's maiden name to have been MacGregor/McGregor.

My earliest record for Ellen/Helen is the 1841 Scotland census. On that census she shows as Helen Todd with her husband Matthew and 5 children. She is just shown as born in Scotland. In 1841 they are in the Civil Parish of Port of Monteith and County of Perthshire. The address shows as Gartmore No 37.

Ellen and the family immigrated to Canada sometime between 1841 and 1861. She died there in 1863.

Her husband Matthew Todd was born in Northumberland, England and I can take him back to his parents Robert Todd and Isabel/Isabella Anderson.

I don't yet know who Ellen's parents were. My Ellen Drummond/MacGregor would have been born around 1800. It doesn't appear she would descend from your John Drummond from the children you show for him, but I'm wondering if he could have been her Uncle? Do you know who John's siblings were?

A lot of the MacGregor's took on other names due to the proscription against their name making it illegal to use the name from the early 1600's to the late 1700's.

Would appreciate any info you may have which would help me with my Ellen/Helen!! I guess the most possible link might be a sibling of your John Drummond/MacGregor if you know who they were?

Thanks so much!!

Tom McMillan (Washougal, WA)

Re: Macgregor and Skinner connection

Here's my McGregor/Skinner connection...

Alexander was born in the USA and emigrated to Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada in 1829.

Alexander is said to have had 3 families. Wife #1 is a mystery.

Wife #2, Mercy Skinner (my gggma)b.1827 d.1859 after her 5th child. She was born and died in Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario, Canada. There is a link for an old book called "Pioneers of Beverly" on Google Books that wrote about her family coming to Ontario in the early 1800's and were the first settlers there. We hope to go by there next summer on the way to the Nova Scotia Games if Mom is up to it. That would be interesting to see and research there!

Their first child was my ggpa--Robert Duncan b.1845 He married a woman named--HENRIETTA COLLIER b.1854 Canada Eng. Her father, THOMAS COLLIER was from Ireland. Robert's son, my gpa was Jesse McGregor. I hear he was a flaming red head!

Other children of Alex and Mercy I think were mostly named after her family members... Enos, Almira Jane, Phoebe Ann, Joseph(died).

Wife #3, was his first cousin--Dorothy Hogg who had lived with their family as their household help, but ended up marrying Alex after his wife's passing. She was 20 years younger... They had 14 (ouch) children. Alexander, John, Joseph Andrew, James, Katherine Ellen, Joseph, Dorothy, Catherine, Eleanor, Mildred, Florence Maud, Roy, Thomas William. (whew!)

After emigrating to Canada as at 9 years old, he lived in the Beverly, Wentworth, Ontario, but moved to Wellington South when he was 61 and died in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario in 1902 at age 82.

When mom was researching for years, she thought our Alex was the same as the Macomb Co. Alexander McGregor since they have almost the same birth and death years, but I found a person who confirmed with a copy of an old family Bible that they were different. Different birth days, different place and date of death and different wife and children. So back to the drawing board, as they say. At least we didn't waste any more time barking up that branch of the family tree!(so to speak...)

Well, I think that covers what I know. There are other references that I have to go to a big library to look in, but I just haven't gotten there yet...

We know everything from Alexander down to me... It's his parents and above--except we know his Aunt was Janet McGregor... A big clue was given to us when we read that she had emigrated from Scotland when she was a young girl, so that means Alex's dad, Janet's brother was probably born in Scotland and came over as a youngish boy...

I know that there's lots of McGregors out there, so it would be amazing to find any new information and would welcome any tidbit that might seem to fit--you just never know! Thanks, again--Barb

PS I did a search for Henrietta Collier and there were hundreds of them... :-p

Of course the "Greer" records I printed off aren't with the rest of the file. I will keep looking for them, though and let you know what I come up with. Here is what I do have:
James Henry Greer was born May 1, 1835 in Dublin, Ireland to a William Greerson and Clara (Unknown). They were from Scotland. James took a boat over to Canada (I can't remember when) with other "greer" relatives and his wife Maria Amelia Grant (according to the log from what I remember). He was a trapper for years in Canada then they settled in Aldboro, Canada where they had my g.g. grandfather, George Alexander Greer (spelled "Greir" on his Canada birth certificate), a daughter Mary and several other sons, but will have to get back to you on the names. I know James Henry was one of three or four sons but don't have their names, unless it was on the boat registry that I can't seem to find. If you think any of this might link to you, email me directly at apatillo@hotmail.com and I'll dig up the Ireland birth record links to send you so you can research it and explain how you can search this site. Hope this helps...Audrey

Hi, I no longer have my ancestry tree on this site but if you have yours posted or give me recent info...whatever you know, I will look to see if anything matches up with mine. Where in Ireland was he born? Around what year did he come over through Canada(estimate for me)? Who was logged in the boat records with him? Do you have any of this info? It took me a year or so to find the boat records on my g.g.grandfather., but I did find it on this site. Have you found his death certificate on this site? You should check to see what home address was on it and who signed the certificate (family member). That might help you connect some of the dots. Well, let me know if you have any of this and I'll look at my info....Thanks for your previous reply, Audrey

One other bit of info I just found in some paperwork. My great great grandfather Robert Greer came to Canada with his brothers James and Sam. I know nothing about James and Sam's families.

My great great grandfather Robert Greer was born in 1836 in Ireland and came to Canada at an unknown date and settled in the Mount Forest Ontario area. He died in 1861. I don't know whether he had any siblings or not or anything about his parents. That is as far back as I have any info. He had three children two of which died in childhood and my great grandfather Robert and down through the years to my family.

This is my first time ever replying to anything like this so let me know if there may be any link.

Thanks

Magruders and McGruders are descended from McGruthers in Scotland; not the MacGregors. We are more closely related to the Drummond clan than the MacGregors. We have established this via DNA testing.

I am looking to find out who Carol Anne MacGregor's relatives are. Her middle name could also be spelled Ann. Her DOB is 2/7/1944. Her last name is now Birdsong, and she has had the last names of Kilmer, Birdsong, Miller, and her maiden name MacGregor. I am only concerned with who Carol's parents are, and any other relatives. Also where she was born. She has lived in California around Whittier, Riverside, Upland, Hacienda Heights, Corona, Pomona, and she currently lives in South Dakota-Rapid City, Box Elder, Black Hawk. thanks

Hi Patricia,

Please contact me respective your McGregors. I have researched quite a bit of the McGregors since they arrived in Ashfield, Huron, Ontario, Canada. However, the time in Scotland is still a bit of a mystery.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Mike Bronner

Sergeant McGregor of the 42nd Highland Regiment Blackwatch

On May 24, 1809 George MacGregor and his two sons Alexander and George Jr. petitioned for land grants in the rear of the front lots on the south side of the Southwest Miramichi River, occupied by Aleander Allen, George Allen and Thomas Leach. ( Upper Nelson, NB). Ref petition # 550 as detailed in the book Nelson & Its Neighbours. They all claimed to have been residents on the Miramichi river for the past twenty years which means they would have been on the Miramichi by 1789. George Sr received 300 acres and his sons each received 200 acres. On the land grant map # 69 it appears that lots #1, 2 and 3 in Upper Nelson were given out to the Mcgregors. Except for the Alexander McGregor lot, the other lots appear to have been reclaimed by the crown.
Elizabeth Davidson born 1779 married a George McGregor after her 15th birthday in 1794.
In the book "Travels In North America", by Patrick Campbell, the author mentions on page 51 that while in Fredericton town in September of 1791, he made arrangements for two smart young men named John and George McGregors to guide him down the Miramichi River. He describes these young men as being born in the forty second regiment, whose father had been a Sergeant in that corps and killed last year, they being well acquainted with the Miramichi River and the course they must follow in descending the river. On page 60, the author Patrick Campbell mentions that he and his party caught up with the two brothers John and George McGreggor at the mouth of the Cains River where they had a house built and were employed as wood cutters for Mr. Fraser, lumber merchant at Miramichi. From the description of the house at the mouth of the Cains River it would seem to be more of a logging and fishing camp than a house as there is no mention of any other occupants, wives, livestock etc.
