I am the Brian Scrivener mentioned in your message. One correction: Julianna's birth year is 1993. The Mackinnons I recall my mother mentioning were her cousins, Tom and Ian. Rowena was about my age (now 60). Where are you, and what's your connection? We are proud of our Mackinnon clan connection -- 'Mackinnon' is one of my son's middle names.

I'm very happy to hear you may have ancestral information for Hector McKinnon. Our family has been researching it for years, but because the last name was changed to Mackinnon it wasn't traceable backwards. On the assumption that my great grandfather immigrated to Canada with his family, I stumbled upon John and Grace Mckinnon in the 1881 Manitoba census. As I wasn't positive they were my great grandfather's parents, it was hard to know whether to try and trace them backwards. Because my aunts and uncles names are the same or very similar to John and Grace's children's names, I assumed there was a family connection. As Hector died quite young, the history from his family wasn't passed on. My grandfather also died very young, so ancestry information has been lost. Any information you have pertaining to his ancestors would be great. If regular email is easier for transmitting information, please let me know and I'll supply my address. Thanks so much.

Hi,

I may have a family connection with your Hector McKinnon. My Hector was born at Erskine, nr. Glasgow, Scotland on 28 april 1857, parents John McKinnon and Grizel or Grace McNeil. The family emigrated to Canada circa 1867 and are found in the Canada Census 1881 residing at Gladstone, Marquette, Manitoba. Hector's death appears in the British Columbia Death Registrations 1872 - 1986 at Vancouver on 1 Oct 1935 . If you think this could be the same person, please contact me - I have lots of information pertaining Hector's ancestors.

Linda,

After my post of 9:00 AM, I went back to the Old Parish Register of Coll, 1776 - 1820, to take another look for the birth of Marion MacKinnon. I could not find one, however, I did find three children listed there from the Marriage of Marion MacKinnon and Lachlan Johnston. They are: Hugh (baptized 11 Dec 1814 in Arinagour, Coll), baptized 31 Jan 1816 in Grishipoll), and John (born 1817 in Grishipoll). I point this out because Quigley, Livingstone, & Dash, in their paper on the ECONOMY clearly state that Lachlan Johnston and his wife (their data agrees with the Old Parish Register as to her name being Marion) sailed aboard the ECONOMY with Two (2) children. Which two? Did they leave one behind?

While I do not consider the document by Quigley, et al, to have the same level of certainty as the Old Parish Register, I do consider the Old Parish Register's level of certainty to be close to 100%, if not 100%. It doesn't get any more reliable than church baptism and birth records.

The answer to the question this information will raise for you (was Lachlan's wife Margaret or Marion?) might never surface to your satisfaction. I know that my family records had my g.g. Grandmother as someone other than the person she actually was. It took years, and more than one proving source of strong certainly before I could accept the change. When I finally did, the brick wall I had been trying to penetrate opened of its own accord.

I wish you luck and success with your research, and I hope what I have provided (which I believe to be 100% accurate) will prove helpful.

Best,

Klee C. Dobra
Linda,

Sarah is usualy a nickname for Margaret, and Neil MacKinnon probably had daughters named Marion and Margaret. Margaret's baptism date is easily verified by vital records; the date is recorded in Book 1, page 57 of the Old Parish Register of Coll. Also recorded in the same book and page of the Old Register is the marriage of "Marion" MacKinnon to Lachlan Johnston on 1 March 1814 in Grishipoll, Isle of Coll.

What is interesting is that while the Old Register records the baptism of Margaret, no birth or baptism is recorded for Marion. The Old Register shows Lachlan, the son of Duncan Johnston and Mary McDonald as being baptised on 15 December 1784 in Breachacha.

The document that details the marriage of Lachlan and Marion (and that I use for a source) is a document titled "Ship ECONOMY of Aberdeen, Tobermory to Nova Scotia, 1819" by Eugene Quigley, John Livingstone, and Kieth Dash. This document is available simply by doing a google search on the complete title. I don't know if this document is exerpted from a larger work, or if this is the total document. I would also point out that their "Marion" could very well be a result of misinterperting someones hand writing.

So, whether it is Margaret or Marion we perhaps will never know for certain, but there is that marriage recordation in the Old Register (I:57) that indicates the woman was Marion. What we do know from this exercise is that your g.g. grandmother, the wife of Lachlan, was a MacKinnon. Because of that, we are related. Many times removed, but related.

Let me know if I can assist you with any of your research as it relates to your MacKinnon side. Meanwhile, any help possible concerning Johnstone would be appreciated. Do you have dates on the Duncan you mention born aboard the ECONOMY? I only learned of this connection within the past two weeks and have very little information on the family.

Thank you...

Klee C. Dobra

Thelma,

I apologize for not responding sooner, but quite frankly, I forgot that my post was even here. To answer your question, YES. My g.g.grandfather was John MacKinnon (married to Isobel MacLean). He had a sister, Margaret, (they were said to have been baptized on the same date on 29 August 1795). I cannot say for certain that Margaret was married to Lachlan Johnston as my records indicate that John's sister Marion (?? perhaps Margaret) MacKinnon married Lachlan Johnston. What is important is that John's sister married Johnston. My records also indicate that John and Isobel (along with their first and second born) and Lachlan and Marion (and their first two children) all travelled together to Pictou aboard the ship ECONOMY. Also on the voyage were Lachlan's father, Duncan, and uncle, Donald Johnston. I have no record of where the Johnston family settled in Nova Scotia.

Hope this helps and find you. Again sorry for not checking back sooner.

Klee Chambers Dobra

Hello..came across your marvelous family research on the MacKinnons on ancestry.com but the link to contact you is not working. I am the grandson of Hector Alexander Mishnish MacKinnon who was born 1 August 1880 and passed away in ElCerrito CA 22 Sept. 1939. My grandmothers name is listed incorrectly as Jennifer McLean. Her name was Jennie Cochrane MacKinnon, and she was born in West Branch,Kent County New Brunswick Canada on Nov 30, 1884.She passed away in El Cerrito,CA 9/27/1978.
I have an old family picture of the Hugh Mishnish MacKinnon family taken I assume on PEI with the wife and all the children if this is of interest.

Agnes and William were my great-grandparents. They emigrated to Toronto and lived the remainder of their lives here. William passed away before my birth, but Agnes was living until I believe the late fall/early winter of 1968.

Agnes' and William's daughter and second youngest child, also Agnes, was my grandmother. She emigrated to Toronto with her parents, younger brother and next oldest sister in 1929.

I never, to my knowledge met Margaret, but did meet Janet as a child, and definitely Susan, who passed away in her 90's, in the early 90's. I was given a tartan blanket of hers, by my grandmother which has a place of honour at our summer cabin.

My grandmother married and became Agnes Stockman. She also spent her entire life in Toronto. Today, March 13th, would have been her 95th birthday. She passed away three years ago this past February.

She returned to Scotland and Coatbridge once in the summer of 1973, along with her two next oldest sisters and me.

I found this posting while thinking of her birthday and how best to commemmorate it. That prompted me to google her name.

I have additional information on her siblings and the extended family, and would appreciate finding out more about the Eaglesham side of the family.

Regards,

Bret Tinson

Hi John,

I haven't been able to find evidence of people traveling back and for from NS to PEI, but it seems that a lot of people in the Maritimes went back and forth to Boston for summer work.
Howdy John,

I'm researching my wife's side and her great-great-grandmother was Isabella McKinnon (m. Edward Keigan of Sydney Mines, N.S.)

I believe she was born in Boularderie and her parents were Angus McKinnon and Catherine McKillop.

I am a novice on her McKinnon section of the tree and am not sure how much movement between PEI and other areas nearby, nor how much connection between McKinnon families there might be yet.

(Working on those folks in more detail is coming up on my ToDo list.)

So, I thought I'd just throw the names out there in case any names ring familiar.
Hi all,

I have been going through old photo albums of my parents, and have found a treasure trove of pictures from my great grandmother Agnes McKinnon MacGillvary. I have some studio photos of her various relatives from Charlotteville PEI; Boston; State Island; Perth Amboy; San Francisco and other family snapshots from Cairo NY (Catskills), Bayonne NJ and State Island from late 1800s and early 1900s. If you have a possible relative in any of those areas in that timeframe, I'd love to see if we can find a connection and put some names to faces.

Other names associated would be MacDougall, MacEachern, MacGillvary, Ascough ... (Mac and Mc often interchangable).

thanks,
John

I am decended of the MacKinnon's of Mishnish, this much I know. My tree is a mess and I am drownng i an endless sea of Malcolm's, Fahrqur's and Alexanders. I know for sure, Malcolm MacKinnon (born 1788) left from Mull with at least his son Martin (born 1822) shortly after the 1851 census. They both settled in southern ontario in Grey county.I have exnsive family hstory back to about the early 1800's but I have hit a wall.
Hi Emma
I believe that we are related! My great-great grandmother was Mary-Jane Donnelly (nee McKinnon), married to Edward Donnelly of Knocknagarvan, Ballinlea, County Antrim. Hector was indeed one of their children and a brother to my great grandfather Alexander Donnelly. While I and a second cousin (Miriam Thompson) have quite a lot of information on the family, Hector has become "lost", other than an awareness that he did indeed emigrate to California. Are you a relation of Hector's???
Best wishes
Colm Donnelly

Hello: You have peeked my interest once again in thie MacKinnon family which I had almost given up on.

This is what I know: Cathrine McKinnon born in 1831 to parents Donald and Margret McKinnon was one of 4 children: John, anne and perhaps a brother in law John or another brother named John (1851 census). Born in Halistra Invernesshire , parish 110, Duirinish in town, Gattrigle and live at No 17 Gattrigle.

Cathrine married John (also a McKinnon) and they had several children:Donald, Kenneth, Mary (born in 1859-60) Mary Ann, Johan and John. In 1881 she lived with these children (husband not listed) in SOuth Harris in Invernesshire at Rodil Farm and it says Cathrine was born in Parish Uist G. Invernesshire.

Also living there was the illegitimate daughter of daughter, Mary, born in c. 1879 age 2, It is this child, (yes! Catherine) who is our grandmother.

Grandma Cathrine brought grand daughter Catherine to Canada. I can find a family almost identical in names and ages coming over but listed as a passenger as well in the child's mother, Mary. I find this hard to understand, as far as any of us knew, her mother did not come.

I found the marriage certificate of Mary (mother of our Catherine) in 1887; she married Kenneth MacDONALD in North Harris and together they had several children. she would have been at home in scotland having babies when she was supposed to be on the ship. I found her death certificate in 1912 died in North Harris at 53.

In 1906, Cathrine now spelled catherine (the grandmother) is in Manitoba in Canada at 75 years of age living with sons Donald and Kenneth as well as a young man named Angus Morrison, 15, who is listed on Mary Macdonald's death certificate as a brother in law of Mary's.

My question to you! DO You have any knowledge fo this family and are there any relatives of their's living in Invernesshire?

any help would be appreciated! Janet (married to a McGonigle whose Grandmother was Catherine McKinnon or MacKinnon)

I'm having a hard time track down my family history. I am a McKinnon, told that when my grandma Jack McKinnon went in the war it got changed from Mackinnon to McKinnon. I'm told by my parents that my great grandparents were MacKinnons and born in PEI Canada, while their parents (my great great grandparents) were born in Scotland and came over to PEI to live and start there family. I get stuck trying to find information. My mom said the family name that was passed down to the men was Jock MacKinnon in Scotland, but that translated to Jack, which eventually translated to John in Canada... With all the name changing I can't find solid facts. I do know that my gradfather is Jack (John) McKinnon, and my grandma's name is Marveen (Marnie) Daniels. My Grandfathers parents should be Jack MacKinnon and Kathrine Matheson or something similar to that....

My ancestor's name was Cathrine MacKinnon( a variety of spellings are seen for both names) Catherine was born c. 1830 in South Uist daughter of Donald and Margaret (nee?) mcKinnon. She married John MacKinnon and had several children, Donald, Kenneth, Mary Ann and MARY on december 20 1858 in Harris. In 1878 Mary had a daughter (illegitimate) on October 01, 1878 in Lingerbay her name, also CAtherine. MAry married eventually to a man named donald Mcdonald and had sveral children, Neil, Donald, MArgaret, Donald J. Jessie. They were related by marriage to a family surname Morrison.

Is this anything you knopw about? I would appreciate any information you have,

JMCG

The Colin MacKinnon I was referring to was my great great grandfather, who, as far as I know, spent his whole life in South Uist and died there in the 1860s.

Sorry, I don't have any information on Lachlan but would like to know if you have any further information on Colin. Did he move to the United States? I have a Colin Mackinnon who married Elizabeth Dickson or Hickson b. Nov 1829 in Scotland and had George Forbes Mackinnon and Catherine Mackinnon both born RI.
