Im having problems locating Donald MackIntosh, Margaret McConnell and/or any children. My hubbies gran has her dad being Mathew MackIntosh and mum being Margaret McEwan, i found the marriage for these two which told me Mathews father was Donald and mother was Margaret McConnell, this is where it gets tricky neither Mathew, Donald or either Margaret are showing on census or birth records for them, i do have a death for Mathew in 1926 in Govan Glasgow mum Margaret McEwan died 2 years later in 1928. On the death and marriage records there are witnesses Thomas and John who i am assuming are brothers to Mathew but i cant find them either.

Donald MackIntosh b abt 1869 (im guessing, unknown place of birth)d before 1924
Margaret McConnell b 1869 re m in 1924(J.N.Morrison)

Mathew MackIntosh b1887 d 1926 Govan Glasgow
(Thomas MackIntosh John MackIntosh both possible brothers to Mathew)
The only two first person records i have for Mathew are his marriage and death records and none for his father Donald. any help would be greatfully received

Hi Kyle

My name is Sandra Macdonald. I came across your post for the Mackintosh family. I believe I may be related to Catherine Mackintosh (born 1850), daughter of Janet and Donald. Catherine Mackintosh, who is related, married a Donald Mackintosh who was a gardener. Donald and Catherine had a daughter, also called Catherine. Catherine (jnr) went on to marry Alexander Macdonald in 1897 in Edinburgh. Catherine and Alexander then had a son, Arthur John Macdonald, who is my granddad.

Does this sound familiar or spark a family jolt with you at all. Please write back to me at sandeemac@live.com.au.

Regards
Sandra

Duncan MacKintosh

I am looking for relatives of Duncan MacKintosh - he was born in Killearnan, Ross & Cromarty in 1983 and died in Burntisland (Fife) in 1930. He was employed at the Grange Distillery as an "Excise Watcher" - he was married - wife may have been called Jessie or Jeannie.

Can anyone make a connection?

I have today found out that his wife was called Jane Langford, she was born around 1886 in Dorset - her father worked for the railway.

He emigrated to Mexico with his brother Ewen Clark Mackintosh (b. 1802 in Westminter, London) who went on to become British Consul of Mexico.

Lachlan Mackintosh Obiturary 1908 Elgin, Scotland

Moray and Nairn Express, Saturday, December 26, 1908, page 4, column 6:
LATE MR L. MACKINTOSH, ELGIN
Another old Elgin citizen in the personality of Mr. Lachlan Mackintosh, retired tweed manufacturer, passed away at this residence, Moray Place, Elgin, on Sunday, in his 84th year. The disabilities of advancing age necessitated Mr. Mackintosh’s retiral from active business a number of years ago, and for some time he had lived the secluded life of an invalid.
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Mackintosh was a well known figure in the community and although a native of the town, he identified himself with all its interests and enjoyed an extensive knowledge of its history. Originally hailing from Nairnshire, Mr. Mackintosh came to Elgin over half a century ago, and ultimately set up in business for himself as a clothier in Commerce Street. After giving up this business, he started a wholesale tweed establishment, which proved very successful and secured a very wide connection. Latterly the business he founded has been successfully carried on by his son, Mr. H. B. Mackintosh.
When the volunteers were started Mr. Mackintosh was one of the original members, and took a leading part in their formation in Elgin. He was keenly interested in the movement and with his customary zeal threw himself into the work, and he was wont to recall with pride the position the Morayshire Volunteers took at the first Royal Review at Edinburgh in 1860.
Some thirty years ago higher education was at low ebb in Elgin. Mr. Mackintosh viewed this state of matters with concern, as he desired above most things to see the fame of the city as an educational centre preserved as it stood in the days when pupils came “from the ends of the earth” to be educated here. Along with a few gentlemen, he started the Elgin Educational Institute—now the Station Hotel—which for a number of years did good work under its first headmaster, Professor Saintsbury, who has since become famous in literature. The Institute continued to flourish under his successors, and was only discontinued when the work was taken up under the new regime of School Boards.
For a term of six years Mr. Mackintosh was a member of the Elgin Town Council and took a very real and practical interest in the progress of the town. It was a time of municipal stress when the Amenities Association was in existence, and Mr. Mackintosh was warmly interested in its work. It was largely through his instrumentality that Lossie Green and the river bank in its vicinity became what they are to-day, and the east and west end drinking fountains were placed where they are largely through his efforts. Mr. Mackintosh likewise took a special interest in the Bishop’s Palace, and a number of years before it was transferred to the care of the Town Council, the building was strengthened and part of its roofed in through his exertions.
For many years he was also convener of the Six Incorporated Trades of Elgin, and was fully conversant with all the old records of the various crafts.
Mr. Mackintosh possessed cultured and literary tastes, and was particularly fond of collecting old records and curiosities. The Fruit of his knowledge in this direction was a popular local guide entitled “Elgin: Past and Present.” In this volume he took pardonable pride in telling how he discovered Elgin’s long lost coat-of-arms. Knowing from his historical knowledge the important position occupied by Elgin in the north in bygone days, Mr. Mackintosh felt confident that the town possessed a coat-of-arms, and through his initiative inquires were made at the Lyon King-at-Arms, Edinburgh. That official, after searching the records, could find no trace of any such coat-of-arms having been registered. Mr. Mackintosh was not defeated, however. Search was made in the town cadget, an old chest, where local records are kept, and there, sure enough, discovered the blazon of the arms of the city, where it had lain for about two hundred years. Along with the coat-of-arms was found the receipt for its registrations. The Town Council passed a vote of thanks to Mr. Mackintosh for the trouble he had taken in the matter, and presented him with a copy of the coat-of-arms, signed by the then chief magistrate, Provost Black. Mr. Mackintosh more than once received the formal thanks of the town Council for disinterested services rendered to the town.
It is interesting to note that the present seal of the Elgin County council as designed by Mr. Mackintosh. When the council came into existence in 1890, a seal was, of course, an absolute necessity. Mr. Mackintosh’s design was unanimously accepted, and the County Council presented him with a copy bearing the thanks of the Council above the signature of the convener who at that time was Mr. J Grand-Peterkin. In the Elgin Museum he was also warmly interested, and by his demise Elgin has lost a noted antiquarian whose advice was asked by for and near.
Mr. Mackintosh was an ardent supporter of the State Church, and in politics a staunch Conservative.
It is an indication of his popularity that although standing as an avowed Conservative in what was considered a Radical stronghold, Mr. Mackintosh on the two occasions upon which he was returned to the Town council, was at the top of the poll.
The funeral took place to the Elgin Cemetery on Wednesday, and was largely attended.
The Reveille Echo
Dated- December 31, 1903
(Columbiana County, OH)

A VETERAN

In Religious and Political
Warefare Gone
-----
Father of D.H. Mackintosh
-----
Ready for the Summons – Funeral
Held Today

Andrew S. Mackintosh, one of the most widely known and valuable citizens of Mahoning county, died at his home in Damascus on Monday evening at 5:45 o’clock, after a very short illness. He was born in Yellow Creek township on Sept. 18, 1815, and remained upon the farm for a time and later became a miller by occupation.

In 1851 he was united in marriage with Miss Mercy Thompson, a daughter of the late John Thompson, of Beloit. To this union five children were born, as follows: John, residing at home; Mrs. Theodore Stanley, of Windham; Daniel H., of East Palestine; Samuel E. of Salem; and Lida, at home. In 1856 Mr. Mackintosh settled upon a farm in Goshen township, a short distance north of Garfield and remained there until a few years ago when he removed with his family to Damascus.

Andrew S. Mackintosh was a man of good judgment and took an active interest in politics. He was a great reader and was at all times posted upon the current events. For 21 years he held the office of justice of the peace and his administrations were characterized by just decisions and those which were upheld by the higher courts. In 1880-81 he was a member of the state board of equalization, a responsible position which he ably filled. He was a descendant of the old Scotch Presbyterian stock and he remained true to the faith of his ancestors until death. For 45 years he was an elder in the church and no conference was complete without him. Few men had stronger traits of character than the deceased. Few men had a larger circle of acquaintances than the departed. He despised sin in all its forms. He was a firm believer in the religion of Christ and died triumphant in the faith, fully ripe and ready for the kingdom which he is to inherit.

Funeral will take place from the Methodist Episcopal church in Damascus today at 10:30 a.m.. Interment in the Salem cemetery.

-------------------------------------------

I hope this helps someone with their search.
I am not related.
Mackintosh Kiltarlity

My g grandfather William MacKintosh was born in about 1850 in Kiltarlity, Inverness-Shire. I know his mother's name was Grace but am unsure if she was a Campbell or MacKenzie or in fact if she was actually married to the person said to be his father - he too was called William MacKintosh and was a shepherd. By the time my g grandfather married Christina Matheson in Killearnan in the early 1870s, it is stated that his father was dead and that his mother is Grace MacKintosh.

I can find no trace of William on the 1851 or 1861 census and no trace of Grace MacKintosh.

William and Christina along with their son Willie are buried in Kiltarlity cemetery. At the time of his death, William was living at Shore Street, Beauly in what I believe was a house belonging to Lovat Estates - he worked for them from about 1875 until he became ill and died. He started off as a farm labourer but was a farm manager latterly.

Can anyone make a connection?
My great great great grandfather, James Mackintosh (b.c. 1807), was employed as a “saw miller” or “carpenter” from at least the 1841 census through the 1901 census. In each of those enumerations the family was living at “Burnside of Lethen”. James died there in November of 1903. James had lived there for at least 62 years, almost all of which he was a saw miller or carpenter for Lethen House.

He married Ann LAWSON in 1827 in Ardclach (dau. of James LAWSON and Isabella KINNAIRD). Ann died in Lethen in 1871. Children, all born Lethen between 1830 and 1850, were Ann, Isabella, Margaret (married to Robert Manson, my line), Sophia, James, Mary, Georgina (married to James Wallace), Jane (or Jessie), and George.

We have some old postcards which indicate that there were related Mackintosh's living there until at least 1910.
Henry Mackintosh 1836 in Mexico

I am looking for any information about Henry Mackintosh. I know he was in Guadalupe y Calvo in Mexico in 1836. He acquired some mines along with Robert Auld and John Buchanan. At that time they installed the first steam engine in the metallurgical industry of the state of Chihuaha, Mexico. Around 1836 to 1850 maybe longer they built a "castle" of sorts. One wall of the structure is still standing as it is part of the federal prison in the town. My parents went down a few years ago and saw what remains of the building and tried to find a headstone that according to family stories was inscribed in silver. They were unable to find it. Not surprising that it is gone if it really had silver in it. If anyone has heard of similar stories in their history please let me know. Thanks

MACKINTOSH - SCOTLAND TO GEORGIA, 1736

I am seeking information about the 16th & 17th c. Scottish ancestry of my 5th great-grandfather John Mor (Mhor) Mackintosh, b. 1698 in Badenoch, Scotland, d. 1761 in Darien, Georgia, who came to Georgia with General Oglethorpe in 1736 as captain of Scots Highlanders. Here's what I have so far:

William Mackintosh (3rd Proprietor of Borlum) of Invernesshire, Scotland; m. 1656 Mary Baillie of Dunain. Son:
William Mackintosh, b. 1658 d. 1743, Brig. Gen (1715) Jacobite; m. Mary Reade. Son:
Lachlan Mackintosh (of Knocknagail), b. abt 1673; m. Mary Lockhart (dau. of John Lockhart of Inverness). Son:
John Mhor Mackintosh, (of Badenoch), b. 1698 d. 1781; m. 1725 Marjory Fraser (b. 1701?). Son:
George Mackintosh, (b. Georgia 1739, d. Florida 1779); m. Ann Priscilla Houstoun, b. 1744. Son:
John Houstoun Mackintosh, (of Camden Co., GA), (1764-1848 ); m. abt 1789 Eliza Bayard (b. 1768). John Houstoun and Eliza Bayard were my gt-gt-gt-grandparents.

Specifically, I am looking for the ancestry of William Mackintosh, 3rd Proprietor of Borlum (DOB, DOD??), who may have been the grandson of an earlier William who founded the Borlum branch of the Clan and was the second (?) son of Lachlan Mhor Mackintosh (b. ?, d. 1606) — but if you se any errors in my list above, please notify me..

I would be grateful for any help, including sources (books, etc). Please post info if you have it, or email me. Thanks very much.

Mignon Cameron - MABCam@aol.com
