The info is family stories?? Catherine was born in England or Scotland? She sailed from Sumter House to America, ended up in Burke Co NC where her daughter was born. [Mary Ann Maclaine]. I am unsure of the spelling of the last name. She came from a family of means and possibly of nobility. Had a brother John and a sister Mary? Her brothers were doctors attending school in 1837. I know this is a long shot but I am still searching.
thank you so much for that information. Gavin's father James Angus was married to Bella, then a woman named Agnes and then remarried Bella. Whilst married to Agnes he had an illegitimate son Leslie Connor Maclean with a woman named Jessie. Jessie brought Les to Australia when he was a child. Les was my Grandfather. This information was only recently discovered and Les went to his grave never knowing he had a half brother (Gavin) and another half brother (Adam, Jessie;s son). I have a lot more information that i have not written here. If you would like to know feel free to email me jsze13@hotmail.com
I was raised to believe Les was an orphan, as this is what he was told. I felt compelled to find out about his family even though he will never know. Thank you again for responding. very much appreciated. cheers Jennifer MacLean

Gavin was my father's cousin. According to my records he was actually born on 24 May 1903 in Dundee. He was a sea captain with P&O. He died in a fire in the Union Jack Club (I think) in London in the early 60's. I believe that by that time he was an alcoholic (family trait I'm afraid). His father James Angus MacLean committed suicide in 1922. James Angus was involved with at least one other woman as well as Bella Gavin, and has surviving descendants in Australia. James Angus's parents were James Angus McLean (note spelling) (1855-1925), and Katherine Mary McKenzie (1857-1938). Let me know if i can be of further help.
Hello Dave, Donald Maclean married to Mary Dingwall (1790-1886) produced a daughter, Ann Maclean (1822-96) who was my great great grandmother. She in turn married Donald MacDiarmid of Orbost (1822-95) and had 9 children, all of whom seem to have survived. Mary Dingwall was the daughter of George Dingwall and Lizzie Ferguson. Donald Maclean (b. 1740/50?) died before the inception of registration and so I have no data on which to base a search of his parentage.
Hope that some of this helps.
Regards, Jim.
I am struggling to make the connection from PEI to Scotland for my ancestors. The forenames are somewhat common for the MacLean clan, so it is difficult to narrow my search. Here is 'the story'. If anyone can verify or add to it, I would be grateful.

Malcolm MacLean [b. ~1801] (John>Norman>John>)and his first cousins, brothers John, Donald, Murdoch, and Angus(John>Norman>Neil>), widowed mother and sister travelled from Raasay, Skye to Prince Edward Island circa 1830. Malcolm settled near Culloden and his cousins in Lewes. Although the story doesn't indicate it, I believe through my research that many spouses and children accompanied them on this voyage.

I have done quite well tracking them in Canada, but struggle to attach them to records in Scotland with any certainty. My next step is to speak to the folks in Raasay, unless anyone has any information?

Re: MacLeans from Skye to Duluth

I have traced back my family to Charles MacLean (McLean) living in Sconcer, at the time called Collemore Isle of Skye. Charles is listed on a plot in the rent book with an Alexander McLean and then on his own so Alexander may be his father but I could find no records of this. I did find a marriage record for Charles and Mary Morrison (Morison) and birth records for Donald and Effy McLean that all tie together. The rent book lists Mary as a widow in 1849 as as evicted shortly after. The Scotish census of 1841 lists Mary Mclean 30, Effy 6, plus Jane 8, Lachan 13, Marion 6 and Mary 15. she is listed in the 1851 census as40 with Anne 4, Donald 6, Effy 10, Jane 14, Jane 18 , Lachlan 20, and Marion 12

I left a message on another board and Marion Markham of Northbrook Illinois contacted me with the following. Charles was married three times. first to Catherine MacKinnon and had one daughter, then to Jane MacDonald and had two children, Lachan and Jane, then to Mary Morrison and had 5 more children.
Mary then left for North America possibly leaving her oldest daughter in Scotland.
How they came and why the family split up is a mystery.
I have Lachlan born 1828 and marrying Julia Ann Feddin ( born 1834) They had three children, Charles, Julia, and Jane.
Lachlan may have worked in Calumute Michigan and as a fisherman on the lake for a time then settled in Duluth where he is buried. His sister ,Annie, is buried in that cemetery as well.
I can be reached at.... janet@escape.ca
,
Murdoch was born in Killmuir Parish, Isle of Skye, County Inverness Scotland around 1755 and settled on Prince Edward Island with wife Mary (Martin) MacLean in the early 1800s, indentured to Lord Selkirk. Family oral history says his father's name was Allan MacLean (b. around 1715), but I have found no records or other sources to support this.
Sorry Heather I just found this old thread today. My Dan was called Black Dan and he supposedly drowned in Nova Scotia but actually came to the states between 1880 and 1882
I know he had a son named Donald that found him in the mid 1930's. Donald had a daughter named Jessie whom married a Larry Fraser and they use to visit but no one cared to take any information. Dan was born either April 1853 or April 1854. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, thanks for that. I do not connect at present to this Donald MacLean. The Donald Maclean born 1824 who could he be the "Tailor" who died before 1841 had sons, Neil John, and Angus living with his widow, Mary Maclean (Dingwall) on 1848 Roag list of those capable of working (Height of Potato Famine, available for work register!) I have found no trace of him or his marriage .....yet! ....Or births. Perhaps it is time I searched again, there seem to be new records available.
Dave

Hello. I'm related to a Donald MacLean born in Duirinish parish on February 15, 1869, who emmigrated to Canada. His parents were John and Marion (nee MacPherson) MacLean who were married in Duirinish in 1853. The family used MacLean and McLean somewhat interchangeably, as might have been expected.

Family, Scotland to Nova Scotia to Massachusetts

Hello,

I checked the archives and was reminded that I haven't mentioned a family I'm interested in in 4 yrs. I don't have any additional information since then, so I'll post one part of what I posted in 2006:

The sisters were Margaret and Sarah MacLEAN, and they had another sister,
name unknown, and a brother, William MacLEAN. I do not yet know the
names of their parents, but the parents would have been born in Scotland,
and their children were probably born in Nova Scotia, and the family
migrated to Massachusetts probably during the 1870's.

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/maclean/2006-0...

However, in the back of my mind, I think I found out that the 2 ladies were cousins instead of sisters. I checked the MAMiddle List and I was remembering correctly. This is part of what I said 2 yrs. ago. I seem to remember that I found the names of the 2 fathers. Maybe that is in the archives of the Nova Scotia List.

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/mamiddle/2008-...

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S. The 3 KERR brothers had a sister also come down to Massachusetts. Mary KERR married William McINNES. I had trouble finding this couple in census pages because I wasn't trying the correct spelling of his name.

http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/mamiddle/2004-...

(The parents also came down from Prov. of Quebec. I can't find out what happened to their other daughter, Hannah Jane KERR.)
(There were 2 possible William McINNES men in Canada in 1880's, and I don't know which one came down to MA to marry Mary KERR.)

Re: Archibald M(a)cLean Barra Scotland to Victoria county Cape Breton

Hello Colin, It's just an odd chance that you may be able to help me, or perhaps you know somebody that might. My gg.grandfather Ewen MacLellan (b.1806 Nth/Sth Uist) married a Jane MacLean (b.1811 Barra) dau. of Archibald MacLean (Master Tailor)and Marion Cameron. I have never been able to obtain any information on this family. It is almost certain that Marion originated from Lochaber as dau. Jane went to Lochaber to have her first child i.e. Marion (MacLellan) born 1828. All the following 8 children were born in North Uist, including my g.grandfather Donald (b.1830). Any thoughts? Thanks, Alexander (Sandy) MacLellan.

My family also came from Lochbroom. I have traced back to Donald McLean born 1806, married Lexy, with several children including Thomas (1852), who married Mary (nee Maclennan) and whose children included Murdo born 1892 (my grandfather). All this was in Lochbroom. My father was also born in Lochbroom, and had a remarkable WWII history which is now the subject of a proposed film www.gilleanschildren.com (any film financiers out there please get in touch)

Iain
