Anthony Macaulay Macleod and family

I have recently read a very interesting document entitled "The Macleods who went to the Philippines" by Anthony Macaulay Macleod. This document mentions many of my close relatives.
I'd like to get in touch with Anthony Macaulay Macleod's family, as we are related.
My ancestry includes both branches of the family, from the two wives of Neil Macleod of Tarbert (1753-1854?).

I am looking for information on my grandparents, Colin and Ada MacLeod... I know they came from PEI to Galt (now Cambridge, ON)... they had 5 girls and 2 boys: Gloria (deceased at an early age, in her late 30's I think); Valma; Linda; Nancy; Faye (deceased in the late 90s or early 2000's), Murray Lynn (deceased in 1996... went by the his middle name Lynn as he had an uncle Murray) and Allan. Any info on Colin & Ada would be appreciated - especially their dates of birth/death and where they are buried!

Hi Sonja,
I searched on FamilySearch.org and found on the IGI a Murdo MacLeod b. 1811 in Upper Bayble, Scotland d. 25 Oct 1887.

His father is listed as Duncan MacLeod and mother Mary MacIver. Malcolm married 10 March, 1846 but the wife's name is not listed. The library in Stornoway has a genealogy section. Also the Town Hall has records & supply copies for a nominal fee.

I, of course have no way of knowing if this is the same Malcolm MacLeod that you are researching but the dates match. I hope this is helpful.

Cathy

Info on my Macleods

My Grandfather Norman Macleod (1872/1953) was born in Tarbert Harris in the Western Isles, and after a long merchant navy career returned there to see out his life. His parents were Kenneth Macleod (1823/1902)(a different Kenneth from The Baker of Tarbert but related to him) and Ann MacPhee (1843/1933). Ann was daughter to Peter MacPhee (1811/1861) and Kirsty MacAulay (1814/1897) of 7 Urgha. I am seeking information on GF Norman's siblings. I have a reasonable record of sister Kirsty who married George MacDonald of CastleBay Barra. Looking for any further info on other siblings - Peter (1866/1955) UM, Alexander (1879/?), Jane (aka Jeanie 1867/1932) UM, Dolina (aka Dolly 1876/?) UM, Margaret (aka Peggy 1864/1954), John Norman (1884/?) and Ann C (1883/1964). As Tarbert, Urgha, Carragraich and Kyles of Scalpay are closely located, seeking any help I can get.
Cheers Stuart

Did you ever resolve this?

I have reasonably good information about many Shawbost families.

Mary Smith came from Valtos in Uig and married Donald Macleod (son of John Macleod and Margaret Macphail of 16 New Shawbost). Mary and Donald lived in 15 New Shawbost and had at least 6 children, Murdo, Malcolm, Mary, Catherine, Annie and Neil. Catherine married Donald Morrison of 41 South Shawbost, where Mary died. I don't have any information about her ancestors.

Daniel & Mary MacLeod/McLeod of PEI

I am helping a friend who is trying to find out more about his great grandfather Daniel and wife Mary. No one living has any info other than they know Daniel immigrated to PEI from Scotland, married about 1870 to Mary ?, and they had these children: Ann P b ~ 1872, Catherine b ~ 1874, John b ~ 1876, Daniel b~ 1877, Alexander b~1879, Archibald b~1881, and twins Donald & Malcomb b~1884. Daniel died 1883 and Mary in 1932. If there's anyone who can lend me info on this family, it would be appreciated. Trying to find out where in Scotland Daniel came from, and what Mary's maiden name was. Thanks.

It does appear you may have family left in Lewis. I don't have the sibling info, but your Catherine Matheson family is interesting as they changed their name from Maclean...assuming they changed it for better land under the landowner James Matheson...name changing in Lewis happens alot.
email me for more info
cheers
Leodhas Macleod
www.hebrides.ca

Hello! John MacLeod (1815-1893) came to Ripley at some point in his life and he is my great-great-great grandfather! I have a question that I'd really like answered if you know it: Do you know any of John MacLeod's siblings names? His parents names were Roderick MacLeod and Catherine Matheson. I'm sure that his siblings must have stayed in Scotland because there are still MacLeod's in Scotland today. I'd really like to connect with THAT side of my family.

While I do not have MacLeods in my tree (when I find things of ancestry interest that might help others I like to post them) this plaque was interesting and says that the group left Glenelg and landed at St. John's Island (now PEI) in 1793. The dates etc. seem to agree with your facts. I think the way it reads is that they petitioned for land as immigrants and were granted 200 acres each in August 1794.
The plaque was erected by the Clan MacLeod Society of Glengarry and if you would like I can try to find you a contact address to persue this.
Tom
While I've long known about the MacLeod settle in Glengarry, some recent discoveries have me wondering about the connections between them and many of the MacLeod families that had settled in North Carolina before the Revolutionary War. There is no question that several of the MacLeods of Glenelg settled in North Carolina, (and there were numerous Alexander MacLeods at the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge and other battles in the area.) I wonder if they returned to Scotland late in the War or at its end, and then returned to North America. As Royalist solders throughout the War, they would have been fully entitled to land compensation and their Loyalist Claims.

My MacLeod ancestors went from North Carolina to New Brunswick directly, and while they were not originally from Glenelg, several likely had been stationed as soldiers at the Bernera Barracks in the 1750-70s. Overlooked today is that very few of the MacLeods and the MacDonalds actually supported Prince Charlie at Culloden, and in many cases, were actively against him. Even Flora MacDonald (she of the skirts) was an active Royalist in North Carolina during the War.

What has me wondering is that two of my ggg grandfather's brothers and a sister left New Brunswick and were last heard from on the Ottawa River.
I just found a plaque erected by the MacLeods of Glengarry, Ontario, dedicated to the MacLeod settlement. Under the leadership of Alexander MacLeod, some 40 families migrated to Canada from Glenelg and petitioned for land in Glengarry.
In August 1784 they were granted the land and the settlement was founded. Alexander was instrumental in founding one of the first Presbiterian churches in Upper Canada and was a captain in the Glengarry Militia during the war of 1812.
Anyone interested, I can send you a picture.
Tom.
