I was born Natalie MacWilliams(1949) was raised in Eldon PEI. I am interested in finding out more about the MacWilliams family ancestry in Scotland. My ancestors did come to PEI with Lord Selkirk around 1803 and can be traced back in the St. John's Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Belfast, PEI. The name started as McWilliam, then McWilliams, and lastly MacWilliams. I would be interested in what information you may have as I am just starting my ancestry search. Thanks, Natalie

When I posted this message over 6 years ago I had very little information on James Jefferson McWilliams. According to my research then the most likely groups that James served with were The Royal Irish Regiment (27th (Inniskilling) 83rd and 87th and The Ulster Defence Regiment) (ex 89F). They were part of the Third Division; the "F" representing foot soldier. Back then you had to know the specific Regiment that the soldier served in and search the soldier list for the surname within the Regiment. Ireland was initiating a process of listing every soldier alphabetically so a surname search could be done so I put my search aside. And, yes, it was a siege of long duration.

The John McWilliams that you found may be his brother, born in 1831. Both brothers were from Mullaghmore, Tyrone County, Ireland. This John married Isabella Corbit in 1866. The family later immigrated to South Africa after the birth of their fourth child in 1878.

Is the Casualty Roll that you cited a complete list of every casualty during the war?

Is this list available on line? I would need to verify somehow this is the same John McWilliams in my family. It is a common name.

I thank you for your information and your response. You brought to my attention the need to go back and search for more data that may have come available since my initial search.

Just a note re James McWilliams who reportedly died in the battle of Sebastopol. Sebastopol was a siege, in which many battles and skirmishes occurred. According to the Casualty Roll as published in the London Gazette and subsequently published as Cook's Casualty Roll for the Crimea, there was only one McWilliams that was listed a casualty in the war--John McWilliams of the 3rd Foot who received a slight wound in the final attack on the Redan on 8 September 1855

Keep an open mind. My McWilliams ancestor always spelled his name as McWilliams. Imagine my surprise when I went to the cemetery to see his son's plot and the name on the headstone was MacWilliams! Six brothers are buried there and half had McWilliams and the other half had MacWilliams on their death certificates. The name on the headstone was very clearly MacWilliams!

Hello JoAnne,
My earliest McWilliams ancesters were John McWilliams and his wife Nancy Simpson. They were supposedly from Tyrone County, Ireland. They both died sometime around 1850 leaving 6 Children:
1. John who migrated to Australia. I never found anything more on him.
2. James Jefferson who died betw. 1854-1855 at the Battle of Sevastopol, Crimean Penninsula, Russia.
3. Mary Ann who resided in Chicopee Falls, Mass, USA. I never found anything on her.
4. William died in the American Civil War in April 1865
5. Jane who married James Corbett in Ireland and immigrated with her husband and children. Lived in Phila. Penn., USA
6. Moore, my ancester who immigrated to the USA and arrived in Boston, Mass on Easter 1860. He eventually moved to Philadelphia and remained there for the rest of his life. I am told that he was named for his paternal grandfather.

Oddly an researcher told me that he has a McWilliams connection to Tyrone, Ireland, with a marriage to a Simpson. Names never matched although I am sure from such an area we probably have a connection somewhere. I wish I could help you more. Happy hunting!
MacWilliams / McWilliams

MY MOTHER'S FAMILY:

My great-grandfather was Robert (James?) McWilliams (born in Ireland), became a US citizen on 9/26/1872 (I have his citizenship papers), and was married to Jennie (McRheem) McWilliams. They had three children -- two died of Tuberculosis. My Grandfather survived...

My grandfather, William James McWilliams, Robert's son, married Laura (Lenora?) Ryder (from the East) and had twelve children: Arthur (lived in Cement City, MI), Stella (Estelle)(M name=McClelland)(lives/d in Arkansas), Myrtle(M name=Priellip, Robert (W=LaRue), Hazel(M name=Underwood), Benjamin (W2=Pat/Patricia)(lives in Tecumseh, MI), Alice(M name=Pratt), Marie(M name=Gall), Jessie (M name=Crutchfield)(lived in Albuquerque, NM), Vadah (M name=Stutesman)(lived in Tecumseh, MI -- owned Tecumseh Book and Bible Store), Helen (M name=Beach)(lived in Adrian, MI) and Anna (my mother)(M=Fairbanks)(lived in Britton, MI) (children are NOT in birth order). They all grew up in the Raisin / Ridgeway / Britton, Michigan area.
Anna Ruth McWilliams married Charles Henry Fairbanks in 1940, and had one son (Stanley Charles or Charles Stanley -- born/died 1941) and four daughters (Charlynn, Rosalee, Natalee, and Yvonne). We all grew up in the Britton, Michigan. I am the youngest, Yvonne (Nickname: Tammee).

Any of this ring a bell to any of you?? Looking for any other history -- especially for my great-grandfather's family in Ireland/Scotland.

Thank you.
Tammee Fensch
Hello Carole. My grandfather too changed the spelling from Mac to Ma. They were all from PEI ,Canada and Nova Scotia. The earliest name I have is for my g.g.grandfather Charles who landed on PEI in 1803 from Scotland with Lord Selkirk aboard the ship Dykes. He had several children. I don't know his wife's name though. So many records from that area are long ago lost. Be nice if we could connect. Joanne
Hi Carole. My grandfather changed the spelling of our name from Mac to Mc over a family fuss of some kind. Were your family from PEI Canada or Nova Scotia by any chance? I may never find this board again so please e mail me. Thanks,Joanne
