Alexander Maddux mar. 2) Eleanor; I've seen the precise date of 11 Mar. 1650 (1651-New Style) -in Northampton Co.,Vir. given for them, with her maiden name listed as White, but no source is ever given. Does anyone know where this date comes from ? Is it a church record ?
I've also seen Jan. 1654 listed--again no source. One, if not both of these dates, is wrong.

Yes, you are correct on Cadwell Maddux switch (researching all the family at once and sometimes cant keep it straight). I am still in the process of trying to gather as much information I can from my relatives. I would love to see what you have! Right now, until I receive some info from my relatives, I mainly have census records which you probably have. If I receive anything on George I would be happy to share it. I think I have seen some articles on him that some relatives have regarding his time in the war. I am wondering if you were contacted by a Carol about George. She was doing some research on the Maddux side.

I live in Southern California. My email address is sagekev@yahoo.com. Send me an email there and I can get you my address.

Are you familiar with George's family with Bessie?

Nice to meet you too!
Kevin

I guess I don't understand that since your grandfather Ed Cadwell died in 1961, that you don't know much about your Maddux side of the family, I would assume you mean the Cadwell side. Anyway, I know quite a great deal about GGrandfather George Henry Maddux. His parents, John Henry and Mary Ann McKern traveled from Iowa on the Oregon Trail in 1861 and wintered in what was then Washington Territory, Walla Walla, WA, where Minnie Florence was born. They stayed through the winter and then came south, staying awhile in Portland, then Albany and eventually to Yamhill County, Oregon, where they bought a farm (all the good homesteads were already claimed). John Henry helped establish the stagecoach run west to Tillamook, on the coast over the awful mountain pass, called the Trask Toll Road. George and several brothers also did this. They were a rugged bunch of people. Where do you live? I could mail you some of my info generated in a report.

Nice to meet you, Cousin!
Nancy

George and Bessie had eight daughters, one which died within a year. I am related to his daughter Florence Maddux (my grandmother who died in 2002, her husband Ed Cadwell died in 1961). She had a son and a daughter, Joye, I am the son of Joye. So George would have been my great grandfather. Because my grandfather, Ed, died so young the maddux family was not discussed much. I am still researching and learning a lot about his side and the rest of my family.

You and I are related. George Henry Maddux was my grandfather, too. He was born Jan 16, 1873. Yes, he was married to Carrie Elsie Wells in 1902, just a couple of months before my father, George Harvey Maddux was born. (He went by Harvey, and he was almost illigitimate, but he didn't know.) They met at the Trask House, where my Grandmother worked as a maid, and he was a stage driver on the Toll Road, just about the most terrifying route between Yamhill County on the East, and Tillamook on the West. They divorced in 1908...then he married Bessie in 1910. He had serious health problems from the Spanish American War, and I think he just hadn't found himself yet.

As few years ago, I was in contact with several descendents of Bessie. and they didn't know they had a half brother till then. I wish I could have met my Grandfather, but during those years, the internet didn't exist and it was much harder to connect to people. My Dad tried to find his father several times but couldn't connect.

Harvey lived most of his life in the Portland, OR area. He was a photoengraver. He died in 1995.

Anyway, who are you related to?

Nancy

I saw two of your posts regarding the Maddux family. I have a second great grandfather who was named John Henry Maddux who was married to a Mary Ann McKern. I also have a great grandfather named George Henry Maddux (son of John)who was married to Bessie Miller but may have been married previously to someone in Oregon. He lived in Oregon. My research has shown George was probably born on 1/16/1873

Hello Carla, we may be cousins (999 removed perhaps).
Maddux is a Welsh surname, as are Maddox, Maddocks, Madoc and others. They all derive from Madoc (meaning fortunate, lucky). That's us!
I only just started using this service so I don'tknow my way around very well. If your tree is public and I can find it, I'll see if we have common ancestors - most likely we do.
Bye for now from North Carolina,
Jerry Maddux

Dennis, just began working AGAIN on my Maddux line and was so thrilled to see the photo of John Campbell MADDUX posted on Ancestry.com. Thank you so much for sharing "him" with us. When we're fortunate enough to have a photo of someone, at least for me it makes me enjoy the research so much more!
I am descended from Nancy MURTILLA Maddux MOON who moved away from TN. with husband Thomas J. MOON to AR. I just posted her photo (taken before her marriage) onto my site. She had LOTS of children too and dies quite young (maybe from so many kids?)...anyway, my grandmother told me alot about her although she died when she was young!
Please contact me here or at okiegrlgg@aol.com
I have worked so many years just on my FORD line that I finally decided I'm sitting here with lots of photos and began uploading them within the past month.

Through other people's trees, I have found out that Thomas H. Maddux father was James T. Maddux. All trees show James T. Maddux being married to Sarah Watson. But some show Sarah dying in 1805, and James remarrying in 1805 to Elizabeth Cooper. Some birthdates show Thomas being born in 1805 and some in 1806. I have not been able to locate any source information such as Thomas' actual birth record, or Sarah's death certificate , or James T.'s marriage record to Elizabeth. Does anyone have in records to determine if Thomas H.' mother was Sarah Watson or Elizabeth Cooper?

His memorial on findagrave.com was transferred to me along with a lot of other Maddux memorials and I would like to be able to link him to his family members, but I have no idea who they are. He is probably related to Julius Augustus Maddux II and wife Martha Jane Turnidge. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Re:James Adam Maddux - Cherokee Connection

Hi,

I am the great-great grandson of James Adam Maddux. I have searched for the Cherokee connection too -what I found was nothing. I found the family lore to be the only source of information. Mainly a picture that hung in my great-grandfathers house that burned in the late 60's or early 70's of an Indian Princess named Moon- it turns out it would have actually to have been a photograph. I believe this person is Mary Elizabeth Moon Maddux.

What I did find was many people in the south that claim Cherokee blood may actually be black and that is the way to cover it up or pass. From the stories I was told, about the Indian Princess, it would fit with that theory since there is no such thing as an Indian Princess. There was no special status for a chiefs daughter or son for that matter. The chief was was actually elected. All of the dates and information I have found on other websites shows no Maddux's before the removal. Only taking Indian lands after. It is also doubtful that they would have allowed an Indian woman to stay behind.

Information on Maddux family in Lunenburg, Virginia

I have been trying to trace my family history, and until late it has been very difficult. My grandfather, Emmett Maddox (Maddux) died when my father was about 5 years old, with his death alot of family history was lost as well. So far I have gathered that Emmitt's father was named Asa Maddux, and his Grandfather was named Asa Maddux Sr. I have been told that quite a few of my relatives still live in Lunenburg today. It seems that after the 1930 Census, the Maddux name changed to Maddox. I was wondering if anyone knew anything else or had any family tree information about Asa Maddux, his siblings, children, and other relatives?

Thanks,

Bryan Maddox

Go to www.boxrec.com - There is an Ernest Maddox "Battling Maddox" from Atlanta, GA who fought in the late 1920s, but no Leeroy. Boxers didn't always use their legal names, especially in the earlier days of boxing, so you might need to check for other names he might have used.

Keep punching, your chin down & your ass off the canvas,

Tony Triem
Boxing Historian

Is there anyone out there who can confirm this? Or any suggestions on where I might look for confirmation?

Obit transcript of James G. MADDUX; 1842-1896; Georgia and Alabama

I found the obituary of James G. Maddux and have transcribed it. I wanted to share it with anyone interested. It is in the Cullman, County, AL, newspaper called the Cullman Tribute and was published in the Thursday, August 20,1896, edition. He was born in Heard County, GA, in 1842 and lived there until about 1895. He is the son of Ira H. Maddux & Elizabeth Brannon.

A COTTON PLANTER DEAD.

Cullman county lost a valuable citizen in the person of Mr. J. G. Maddux who died at his home near Phelan Saturday morning. For sometime past he had been in failing health, disease naving fastened itself upon him to such an extent that its ravages could not be checked. In the beautiful cemetery at Hopewell, on Sunday afternoon the remains were laid to rest, with religious rites by Rev. I.F. Hawkins. Mr. Maddux came to this county from Georgia less than a year ago and purchased the farm whereon he died to engage in cotton raising. He was considered a model cotton planter, and has an excellent prospect for this season’s crop. He was highly regarded by his neighbors, and all whose acquaintance he had made during his residence in this county.
The deceased leaves a widow and six children, four sons and two daughters.

MADDUX, Nora, James A., Rbt R. & Geo. in Oregon

I am transcribing the Evergreen Cemetary in Ontario, Malheur Co., Oregon and thought I would post pictures of the Pre-1900 headstones for those interested in having them. This is a very large cemetary, there is a possibility there could be other family members buried here after this time period. If you are interested in them, I can look for them specifically.
