I believe that a James Madigan (not sure if it is your relative) was the brother of Timothy James Madigan that came to Melbourne from Co Clare Ireland in 1853 on the ship Wanata . Timothy Married Hanora Gilligan (also on the Wanata in Melbourne in 1854.) Timothys parents were Patrick Madigan and Mary Callinan.

My grandfathers name was Ronald James Madigan. He had a brother named Francis and a sister named Agnes. It is possible he had a brother named Edward. Something happened in the family, because my grandfather ran away at the age of 13 because of a fight with his stepfather. Very little else is known. My father, Ronald Jr., was not close to his father so there are only bits and pieces of info. and no one left to ask!
Maureen F. Madigan

Hi Agnes, I know this post is from a while ago. My grandfathers name was Edward Francis....he was born a Madigan in 1898 in Boston. Something happened with his family I believe in Cambridge but not sure and he was then adopted by a family in Randolph, MA that may have also been family somehow. We did find out recently that my grandfather had a brother but no one knew his name. All this stuff was very hush hush growing up. I know that my grandfathers real name was Madigan from Boston and that he was adopted by the Fahey family in Randolph i think when he was around 12? not sure really. He had a son who was my dad. It is all alittle hard to figure out but your posting sounded interesting. Let me know if any of this makes sense. thank you Marie Also my dad had the most beautiful bluest eyes of any handsome irishman that you would ever see. Take care.

So far I can't find any information in Ireland on my James Madigan.
Hello Mark. I am hoping that you get this message. I am searching for a Thomas Madigan who was born in New York State around 1900. During the late 1920's and early 1930's he was living in Saginaw, Michigan and married Margaret Ann J. Manning on November 21, 1927 in Saginaw. At some point they divorced and Thomas ended up in Detroit where we believe he lived until his death. Margaret moved to California some time after their divorce. I would love to hear from you and I am hoping this all fits into your Madigan family.

John Ricklefs

Johanna has a son who died at Andersonville Ga Prison during the Civil War.That Monument may have been for him. We are beginning to think the Thomas the shoemaker is my great Grandfather his name and occupation matches other earlier info from directories with childern names.I havent been back to Troy for a long time. We did trace Mary Madigan to Albany where she lived with her daughter Margaret. She is buried at St Ann's with Margaret and her husband. It sure would be nice to find out who came first and who followed. Good luck will post any more info

Possibly, Nora's children included a Mary, Margaret,John Patrick, Josephine, Michaeal, William and Elizabeth Catherine (in birth order). (one child is missing - presumed dead early on). Following Irish naming patterns, such a connection is certainly possible!
Troy City Directory in 1860 lists a Mary Madigan- widow "house near Erie, near Blackrock";also a Johanna - widow, John - brickmaker, John - moulder and Mary, Mrs. living at 614 River.
In 1871 the city directory lists several Madigans - James - foundryman; Johanna - widow, Mary - widow; Michael - moulder; Thomas - laborer; Thomas - shoemaker; Timothy - helper and 2 Williams, both laborers.
There is definitely a Limerick connection - I found I think burial records to that effect - someone erected a monument, perhaps Johanna, but I did not record that information. I will let you know if I find out anything else -
Kathy

Margaret married Dennis Farron and resided in Albany.

We think Thomas Madigan had a brother possible William they resides together for a while.
Tartans are a Scottish tradition, not Irish. Although there are some Irish tartans, mostly specialized like the St. Patricks tartan. Most families don't have a tartan. Getting a tartan is a very long and expensive process.

BTW, I am a Madigan from upper Michigan. My family came to Sault Ste. Marie through Alpena Michigan from Belleville Ontario.

Maureen,
You are on the right path now. Philip and Agnes White were my grandparents. Agnes was born in 1901, where I,m not sure , she died around 1954, I remember she being waked in the house in Medford. She was paralyzed from the waist down after the birth of her last child Clare, I only remember her in a chair with a blanket over her legs.
I grew up in Boston my father was a Boston policeman, and I think he would of known of your grandfather. Sadly he died in 1973, and history his of the family ceased.
The last of my father's siblings Mary Elizabeth was buried afew weeks ago in N.H.
My mother is 90 and the next time I am stateside I'll see if she has an memories of the Madigans. I live in Ireland, but travel to Boston several times a year I know ther was one photo of my grandmother wwith me taken in the early 50's
You probably have more history then me.
MaryAgnes White Harrington

My Great Grandfathers name was Charles Madigan. His son Ronald James was my Grandfather. He also had a daughter named Agnes and a son named Francis. Agnes married a man named White, I believe his first name was Phillip. My father, Ronald John Madigan, told me once that Agnes had 9 children, maybe more. My father was born in 1930, so Ronald James must have been born in 1903 or thereabouts. I believe he was the youngest of the three. He would have been sixteen when your father Charles was born. It is certainly possible that his older sister Agnes had a child in 1919. Perhaps she named him after her brother Charles. I would love to learn more about my fathers family. He died in 2001.

Re: John Madigan of Mount Forest Ontario

Hi Wayne,

I originally posted this reply under the Spurrill family thread, then saw this one and thought I should repost here:

I saw your name come up on the web discussing your great-grandfather, John Maddigan. He also happens to be my great-grandfather. My grandfather was his son, Daniel, and my father was his son, Joseph. Though I've never done a genealogical search myself, I did inherit a local history book that belonged to my mother, Maggie (Limacher) Maddigan, entitled "Faith and Furrows". An article written about the Maddigan Family states that John was born in Mount Forest, Ontario, in 1856. He moved to North Dakota in 1878 and married Hannah Donavon in 1884. All 10 of their children were born in North Dakota: Edmond, Simon, Daniel, Eugene, Fred, Vincent, Alphonce, William, Harry and Nell. The article goes on to say that Ed and Simon homesteaded in Palmer, Sask. in 1907. John and Hannah, along with my grandfather, homesteaded in Palmer in 1908. Vince, Phonce, Bill, Harry and Nell all came to Sask. as well in 1908, Gene in 1909, and Fred in 1910. Gene and Fred also homesteaded in Palmer in 1913 and 1910, respectively. There's no year of death for John, but it does say that Hannah died in 1919. Vince and Phonce moved to Detroit, where my Dad, Joe (b. 1914) spent some time in the 1930s as a wetback, illegally employed with the help of his uncles! I understand there are a number of Maddigan cousins still living there.

Hope this helps!

Barbara Maddigan
Whitecourt, Alberta

p.s. I read your comments about John having moved to North Dakota under a cloud. This isn't anything my Dad ever talked about, but he would joke about our last name having been changed to the two D spelling because of the family wanting to disassociate itself from a relative that was a horse thief! If John actually did change the spelling of his last name when he left Canada, I'm sure that your explanation is the more reasonable of the two :)
