John Madill b. 1857 Co. Monaghan

Hello

I am a descendant of John Madill and Anne Kane b 1850 Clones, Co. Monaghan. They were married in October 1868 in Clones and had a daughter Florence in February 1869. John's father was William Madill. Anne's father was Edward Kane. I'm having trouble tracing back further and wonder if anyone else has them in their tree?

Many thanks

Jayne Garner

Hi Patricia
I was wondering if you had any birth info on Eliza Smith and the year she married Benjamin? I am a descendant of Robert and Rebecca and had searched back to Benkamin and Eliza, but have not been able to find any dates?
I would be grateful if you could provide any info or point me in the right direction.
Thanks Vicki

Your Mary Ann Madill married our Ebenezer Madill 3 Jan 1841. One of their sons, David Absolem married Annie Holbourn 2 Nov 1870. One of their sons, Preston, married Carrie Parsons 22 Jun 1898. Their son, John Kenneth, married Margaret Isabel Hayward (my paternal Aunt) 7 Oct 1933. Their son, Kenneth Roy was married twice. I have been piecing together the Madill family history on behalf of his children (my second cousins). Can you assist with Madill history back in Monaghan, Ireland?
Dinah Cruse (nee Hayward) Toronto, ON

Dear Robert.

Your family is my daughter's family, and I have done quite a bit of genealogy on them. My daughter's paternal grandfather was John David, son of William John (Jack), and Genevieve. I've gone back several generations, where they are in England. I'd be happy to share. I have some pictures available too. It's amazing how many Madill's there are. I've been working this puzzle for years, and it just keeps on going. :)

Colleen

I am looking for information on Mary MADILL - born 1877, I think in Ballymena. Mary had a sister Elizabeth born 1881.

Mary MADILL married William Keegan - and the 1901 census shows them living in Wellington Street, Ballymena (Elizabeth visiting) and by 1911 in Suffolk Street. By then they had a son William - born 1902 - and a lodger Catherine McCURDY (aged 82 in 1911). Possibly a relative?

Any information would be most welcome.

I did stumble across a detailed "Madill" family tree online and my immediate/"known" family is correct. I thought that I would pass it on. Here it is:

http://members.shaw.ca/hal2001/ui23.htm#a95

This family tree is the earliest I have found. It begins with Alexander L. Madill was born circa 1809 at County Antrim, Ireland. I am in Ontario Canada.

Best of luck

To make it simpler to understand, here is what I have

???(I've heard both Willaim and Thomas) Medill and ??? lived in Ireland (County Cavan/Monaghan) and had the following children that came to Canada/US:

John Madill
Thomas Madill
William Madill
Joseph Madill
Christiana Madill

John and Thomas settled in Ontario.
William went to New Brunswick and then on to Ohio
Joseph went to Ohio
Christiana married Hugh Carroll and went to Ontario.

It seems we are cousins via my great great great grandfather John and your great great great grandfather Thomas. Your great great grandfather John and my great great grandmother Caroline "Carrie" would've been first cousins.

Hi,
Yes, I totally agree. The Madill lineage is very, very confusing. It doesn't help that they used the common names John, Thomas, Joseph, John, and William over and over again.
My information came from Edith Maude Madill Anderson and my great great aunt, Gladys Madill Ranck. Both are of course gone, now.
The information I got from Maude says that John Madill had 7 children. The mother is listed as Ann Crosier/Crawford. The children are John Madill born in 1825 (this was my great great grandmother's father). Joseph Madill and William Madill (twins) born in 1818, Thomas Madill born in 1824, Betty Madill born in 1828, and then have another Thomas Madill born in 1822 and Agnes born in June 1832. Of course, John Madill is the only one I'm completely sure of. For years I didn't know anything about the twins as it just said they moved to the "Queen's Bush" and I had no clue where that was. Thomas Madill I have as married to Mary Ann McCullough. I believe the Thomas Madill born in 1822 probably died as an infant. (Have a couple instances in my family tree where they named a child the same name until one survived infancy). I do have Thomas' children as John, Jane, Mary, and Matthew, but no further information on them.
John Madill (the original) had a brother named Thomas born in 1798 that married a Mary Moncrief. They had a son Joseph born in 1837 that lived in Cavan, Durham County, Ontario, Canada. His son William was my great great grandfather. William married Carrie Madill who was the daughter of John Madill, the son of the original John Madill. In a nutshell, I descend from two of the brothers that came over from Ireland.....John and Thomas. My understanding was that there was a sister, Christiana and a brother William and another one Joseph. William Medill was the one who settled in Ohio and had the famous son Joseph Medill, Mayor of Chicago (this I can not prove...it is all hearsay). The brother, Joseph was supposedly a sheep farmer in Ohio. And, of course, you already know that Christiana married Hugh Carroll.
I have collected some documentation, but I must tell you it has been very frustrating. I pretty much just shelved it all. I went so far as to visit Lake Forest College in Chicago where they have a Joseph Medill Library and also contacted the archivist at Cantigny Park at the Robert R. McCormack Museum in Chicago to go through some of Joseph Medill's papers pertaining to family history of the Medills. I did copy some of that information (as much as they'd allow) but really didn't learn anything that I didn't already know. There was some correspondance with Joseph Medill's family from Christiana Carroll's descendents. The thing is, these people were pretty cagey about their past and their background. They did not make it easy for us.
If you'd care to e-mail me at lauraengel at yahoo dot com I'll share what info. I can and would like to know a bit more about your line. Thanks for posting.

The Medills of Cavan/Maryborough are indeed a confusing lot. My ggg-grandfather was Thomas Medill. From information I have been able to gather and piece together two, (possibly three)brothers emigrated to Cavan from Ireland. The brothers were Thomas and John. John was the father of the twins William and Joseph, born in 1818. He was also the father of Thomas (b. 1824) my ggg-grandfather, Elizabeth and Christianna - there may have been other siblings. According to John's will dated 1860, the mother of the twins was Anne Crawford. I don't have any information on the mother(s) of the other children. "My" Thomas married Mary Ann McCullough, they had four children: John, Mary Ann, Jane and Matthew. My gg-grandfather John was the oldest. Mary Ann died when John was about 9, Matthew was 2. Thomas sold his property to a cousin (Eliza a daughter of Christianna-Medill-Carroll), sent John to live with his grandfather John while the younger 3 remained with Eliza and her husband. Thomas then headed for Colorado where he joined his sister Elizabeth and her husband William Dally as verified in the 1860 census for Boulder County. John, Mary Ann and Matthew later followed him to Colorado. Thomas and John became cattle ranchers/farmers in the Rye, Colorado area. John married Evangeline Eakins and they had 7 children. John died in 1899 and is buried in Brookside Cemetery in Rye. Thomas seems to have wandered off again as I have not been able to locate any records on his death, although he is rumored to have passed away somewhere in Colorado.

I also have some information on the McCulloughs and some of their relationships with the Medills/Madills.

Hello - new to this board. I've finally discovered that my great (x2) grandmother Rachel MADILL came from Monaghan. She married John WILSON 7 December 1852 in Drum 2nd Presbyterian Church. They had at least three children - William, John and Ellen and moved to Lanarkshire, Scotland, between 1871 and 1881. Rachel Madill died in 1907 in Scotland and was born in Ireland around 1829. Her husband, John Wilson, was born in Ireland around 1828 and died in Scotland in 1916.

Rachel Madill's parents were, I think, Joseph Madill and Ann Carter. I have no information on them.
Sharon,
The Madill line got to be so confusing that I just eventually shelved it. Even in my own line there is conflicting info about Thomas and John's father and their siblings and no one can really proove anything including myself. I have John Madill married to Ann Crosier/Crawford and son John Madill married to Elizabeth Tait. On my other Madill line, I have Thomas Madill married to ? Moncrief (we think Mary Anne) and 2nd marriage to Mary Tate (not related to Elizabeth). I've seen info saying that John and Thomas' father was either a William Medill (Professor of Theosophy and the author of a book about the end times or possibly a ship builder) or a Thomas Medill. It does appear John and Thomas had a sister Christiana Medill who married a Hugh Carroll and lived near Guelph, Ontario. There's also some speculation that William Medill, father of Joseph Medill, Mayor of Chicago during the big fire, may have been another brother. I do know there was a Joseph Medill who was a brother that was a sheep farmer in Ohio. But, really, all of that is just speculation. There's really no proof that I've seen.
I did at one time try to collect info. on all the Madills in Ontario and try to sort them out........but that just prooved impossible. That was back when I had more time to work with it, too.
I do believe there were quite a few Madill/Medill families in County Monaghan and County Cavan, Ireland and we're probably all distant cousins. It would've been a lot easier if there weren't so many Thomas, William, Joseph, and Johns!

Hi
I am related to the Madill family. I have information on Thomas, Joseph, David and many others.
David Madill married Jane Hammil who had 1 daughter Elizabeth Bartley to anotehr marriage. Elizabeth married Robert Jamieson.
Thomas Madill married Jane Minnigan
John Madill married Mary Anne(I have been told that Mary Anne and Jane were siblings and they each married Madill Brothers
It is possible that David, Thomas and Joseph were all brothers as they all came from the same area and around the same time.
Have lots to share and am so eager to get back into my family tree...Computer crashed and just recently got another one.
Sharon
I have had no luck yet researching the Madills in my line.
Francis Duffy and wife Jane Madill emigrated to Canada around 1834-1844 with their 5 children, according to Canadian census records all were born in Ireland. Francis Duffy died in 1857 near Kingston, Ontario and from death & census records, etc he was born c1800. I think Jane died in 1850 but the record is minimal. Their children were Mary Ann c 1827; John c 1828; Samuel c 1830; James c 1832 and William c 1834 - 1841 (depending on the record). They all lived and died in Pittsburgh Township just east of Kingston. Mary Ann married Robert Clarke and they became my g-g-grandparents. Samuel and John married Elizabeth Henry and Ellen Henry respectively - I suspect these girls were related and there were only about 500 people in that whole area in the mid-1850's so it's likely they were sisters or cousins. James married Isabela Leggett. I have no records for William. If any of these names fit your research, please email me pat.blake@sympatico.ca. I would love to track my Madill's to Ireland. Thanks.

Jesse,
You are probably looking for my branch of the family. I think! My grandparents and dad are form Watertown in St Lawrence county New york. The family first came through Canada where one member was a doctor in charge of some sort of hospital/asylum. There are still some cousins(barbara) up there on both sides of the border). I have been to dublin and done some research on the Madills of Monaghan. I have been hosting children from N Ireland as part of a summer program . Their parents tell me there are many madills as Monaghan is just over the border in the republic.

I hope to hear from you.

Robert P Madill Jr

I am looking for info pertaining to Madill's from Monaghan that settled in St Lawrence County , NY. Oldest Madill I have so far is Benjamin born abt 1760 - wife unknown , he had two sons that I know about so far David 1781 - 1861 who married in Ireland Isabella Munhallan 1785 - 1869. Both died in St Lawrence County, NY Childrens names are Abel , Mary, Charlotte and William. The other son of Benjamin is Abel Madill born 1784 who married Eleanor Stillman. Children of this marriage were Martha, Letitia, Thomas, Isabella, Agnes,Benjamin, Nelson and Charles. It is believed that they first went to Canada before coming to New York. Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

Jules, the Benjamin on your line doesn't match mine.I have one born in 1829 and his father in 1803. I have a William Madill born in 1856 and I don't have any information on his wife or children. Most of my Madills were born in Monagham, Ireland and a John born in 1878 in Scotland and married Susan Madill. I haven't had much success on getting much information on this line.
My wifes family is William Madill married to Mary Park. They had 10 daughters and no sons. Her great grandmother was Racheal Madill the 2nd oldest daughter. She was married to George Collins of Pickering area. He died 1862 he was 46 yrs.11 mo.& 9 days buried in Pickering,Uxbridge cemetery and left this widow with all these daughters.I have that a John Madill and Jane are the Parents of William and James this is from Willams Will. That William and James Madill are definetly brothers. On this Will there are 2 names John Madill Sr.? and Henry S Peters as a witness. Also there is a Adam Duff (my brother in law) to execute the will. The Wills are in the Whitby Courthouse and this Will was made up on March 28 1862. I picked this Will by for 50 cents about 25 years ago when we were in Toronto. Another Madill I have is Benjamin born 1817 Died 1891 Married to Jane Park.I don't know when they were married but the first child was born in 1844, The had 11 children I have copies of the descendents. There was Henry, Rober, John, David, Sarah Ann, Hannah, Mary Rebercca, Racheal, Thomas, Phobe the last name I cannot read.
I hope this will give some idea what I have for the Madills. thank you JULES
