But, Isabella Todd died in 1706 and Isabella Madison Abney was born in 1740.

Does anyone have proof of who Isabella Madison Abney's parents actaully are?

Regina L.
James Madison 1866

I'm looking for any information on James W Madison and his wife Eliza/Elzey Brasseale. They were married in Memphis, Lawrence, Tennessee on February 3rd, 1866. Eliza was pregnant with their son John Wally Madison before they were married. John Wally Madison was born June 20th, 1866 in Tennessee. Eliza had a son Robert Nathaniel Graves from a previous marriage. Eliza died in 1866. I don't know the exact date or the cause of death, but she may have died in Izard County, Arkansas. I believe James W Madison died shortly after her because John Wally Madison and his half brother Robert Nathaniel Graves were living with Eliza's sister and brother-in-law in Ozark, Missouri in 1880.It's also rumored that James W Madison and Eliza Brasseale died together in a buggy accident.

I've been searching for this family for a very long time so any information would be greatly appreciated!

-Bill

William Madison born around 1811

I'm having trouble finding anything more then the 1850 census about what is suspected to be my great great grandfather William Madison born in Virgina. My dad had always said his great grandfather was a river boat captain and this census does indeed list him as a Steam boat Pilot (S.B.Pilot).
I am trying to connect him to the Madison line which includes the ex president, James Madison. I'd love to find who his father was to make the connection if possible so anyone out there have any info?
It is suspected that possible his father was William Willis Madison but in a book all about the Madison line, it says William Willis Madison had one "unknown Madison" as a son.
This William Willis Madison has a date of birth as 1826 so would be born after my g.g.grandfather.
Susi - which census? Antone (Antone Christ Madison) was in Green Bay, WI in 1900 living with his parents and two brothers, then I can't find him in 1910 or 1920, but he is registered for the WWI draft and in a city directory in Moline, IL in 1918. He shows up with a wife in Dallas in the 1930 census, and in surrounding city directories in 1922-1943 or so, in Dallas and then Fort Worth. His parents were Nels and Maria Madison. They came over from Denmark.

Howdy cousin,
I'm related through Catharine & William Arbuckle's daughter Elizabeth who married Samuel Alexander. Their daughter Catharine Madison Alexander married Benjamin Harrison Sterrett and had William Henry Sterrett who had my grandmother Helen Florence Sterrett. However his wife is not Helen's mother... a mystery I may never live to see solved! Only been at it for about 30 years.

Margaret Amundson - are there any records that mention Humphry as a son of Thomas & Joanna Buckner Madison? I've not found anything in any of the books about Virginia that mention who Humphry's parents are.

Leslie Barker Thomas

What happened to Oscar?

In the 1900 Census, Virginia Ann Lee "Annie" CHARLTON (b.1865) was the wife of the head of the household, Oscar E MADISON. Three kids are listed.

By 1910 Census, Virginia Ann Lee "Annie" CHARLTON (b.1865) was the head of the household, and married. She's listed with the same kids, but no husband is listed. Oscar E MADISON (b.1867) is listed by himself as divorced and alone.

This continues on subsequent census records.

Does anyone have any info about why they would be listed this way? If Oscar passed away, I would expect her to be listed as widow. If I have the right Oscar in 1910, why isn't she listed as divorced? If I have the wrong Oscar, how may Oscar E MADISON's, born at the same time, can be living in the same area at the same time?

How can I sort this out?
Who were the parents of Humphry Madison 1730-1756

Conflicting information on various lists by various posters contend that Thomas Madison and Johanna Buckner were Humphry Madison's parents. However other researchers I've come across have that his parents are John Madison III and Eliza Minor. The only thing I am sure of is that Humphry married Mary Davis Dickenson - daughter of Adam Dickenson/Dickinson and Catherine Stephenson. NOT John Dickinson the signer of the constitution which many have in error.
John and Thomas were brothers.
The Thomas Madison Family Record as recorded in Reminiscences of Eastern Oregon, by Mrs. Elizabeth Lord (1903) by The Irwin-Hodson Co., Portland Oregon, page 231. It seems as if this information would have been taken from a bible record, but this is not revealed in the book. In this information she lists Humphry as one of the sons.
Does anyone have a will copy from either John or Thomas listing Humphry as a son?

Leslie Barker Thomas
Humphrey Madison b. 1730 m. Mary Dickinson

Samuel Brown son of Henry Brown and Mary Giles was born 1717 and died 6 Dec 1749. He married Mary Davis Dickinson daughter of Adam Dickinson and Catherine Stevenson (Stephenson) about 1743. She was born 1725 and died in 1770 August Co. VA. Sam and Mary had two sons Adam b. 1745 and William b. 1747 when he died in 1749 - she was pregnant with son Samuel born in 1750. In 1753 Mary Brown married Humphrey Madison cousin of President James Madison. They had one daughter Catharine born 1754. He was the sheriff of Allegheny County VA. He was killed by Indians in 1756 and step-sons Adam and William Brown were carried off by the Shawnees. Legend says that one boy later escaped. The other boy married an Indian girl and decided to stay with the Indians.
Mary Brown Madison married a third time to James Littlepage and bore him a son John Dickinson Littlepage b. 1760.

Does anyone know more about the sons of Samuel and Mary Dickinson Brown? Adam, William or Samuel?

I have more information on Catharine Madison's marriages and her children. I am related through Catharine's marriage to William Arbuckle. Their daughter Elizabeth Arbuckle married Samuel Alexander. Their daughter Catharine Madison Alexander married Benjamin Harrison Sterrett. They were my grandmother's grandparents.

Leslie Barker Thomas

According to the will information Capt. William Arbuckle was only married once and that was to Catherine Madison McClanachan Poague. Yep she had married again after Capt. Robert McCanachan (the spelling is several ways) to William Poague per the book The MCCues of the Old Dominion. She was pregnant with a son who she named William when her second husband was also killed in 1777. They had been married barely 10 months. Would love to have seen a picture of Catherine - she must have been a beauty to merit the attention received by all these fine soldiers. Their son William died when he was 17.
Would be interested in knowing more about the McClanahan/McClellan connections.
By the way I had tried to email you direct a couple of times and never heard back.

Leslie
William was not listed as an heir, although John Payne Todd’s testimony of 3 May 1837 makes him out to be alive. Probably William was born 1807-1818 and had removed from the area so he was not located to give money to per James Madison's final wishes.

Dave (half 3rd cousin 6 times removed of James Madison over on his grandmother Frances' side)
Leuckf At bellsouth dot net is my eddress. It's nice to find a cousin from the Scottish side of my family.

And yes, Christina's mother was named Jessie Fraser. I'm sure I have a photo of her.

Frazer

Frazer, you are spot on! My GreatGrandmother was Christina Thomson who married Jonas Madson(later changed name to Madison). Christina's siblings were:Charles, Thomas, isabella, Alexander, Jessie, Rachel, Robert. They were all born in Greenock, Renfrewshire Scotland. Their parents were Daniel and Jessie Thomson (both born in 1837).
I also think that Jessie Thomson (Sr) maiden name was Fraser or Frazer! I have a cousin in Boston whose middle name is that as well.
My GreatGrandmother (Christina) had 4 or 5 children and named one of the girls Jessie...we do know her grandchildren and were close growing up.
My daughter Julie has done quite abit of the research and would be more than willing to share her info...she can send you her file through the computer.
I am happy to find out we still have some relatives!
Susan

Susan, I believe that I am related on his mother's/my mother's side. I believe that his mother was most likely my great aunt (my maternal grandmother's sister) Thomson. I don't even know her first name for sure - possibly Christina, possibly Cassandra. My grandmother was Jessie Thomson Hill. I have found only one second cousin, and he was no wiser than me about it, hence my message. Does this sound anywhere near correct? I hope so.

Frazer

Hello,

I believe Mary Arbuckle is my 3gGrandmother through Susan M. Nelson, then Nancy Hannah Fort and would like to share info with you.

Below is a copy-and-paste from:

A HISTORY OF KENTUCKY AND KENTUCKIANS (1912, Volume 3)
by E. Polk Johnson
Page 1347

"On the 1st of May, 1884. Captain Phister was united in marriage to Miss Flora Eleanor Hannan, who was born at Hannan's Landing, Gallia County, Ohio, and is the third daughter of the late Dr. William Franklin Hannan and Caroline Matilda (Graham) Hannan. Dr. Hannan was from Gallia County, Ohio, a lineal descendant of the Madison, Taylor and Henry families of Virginia, which contributed two of our presidents and our greatest orator, and also of the family from which came John M. Dickinson, signer of the constitution. His maternal great-grandmother. Katherine (Madison) Arbuckle, was a daughter of Humphrey Madison, son of John Madison, one of the founders of Augusta County, Virginia, who was a son of Ambrose Madison and Frances Taylor, grandparents of President Madison, and Mary Brown (nee Dickinson). She was born in 1754. and was a niece of Bishop Madison of Virginia, and of Governor George Madison of Kentucky, and cousin to President Madison.

Humphrey Madison was killed by Indians in 1764, while living at Fort Jackson, now Covington, Allegheny County, Virginia, and his two stepsons, Adam and William Brown, captured.

Katherine Madison was thrice married, first to Captain Robert McClanahan. who was killed at the battle of Point Pleasant; second, to William Pogue, who lived but ten months, and third, to William Arbuckle, born in 1752, of Scotch parentage, near Balcony Falls, James river, Botetourt County, Virginia. He was a son of Mathew Arbuckle, and came of brave and adventurous stock, the first of that name in America being Captain Robert Arbuckle, commander of the ship "Golden Fortune". He was a younger brother of Capt. Mathew Arbuckle, the gallant British officer before, and American officer during and after the Revolution, who led General Andrew Lewis' army through the trackless wilderness to the mouth of the Great Kanawha, where the memorable battle of Point Pleasant took place in 1774 in which William Arbuckle participated. He was also a daring follower of George Rogers Clark in his thrilling march to the capture of Vincennes, Kaskaskia, and the conquest of the northwest. He afterwards settled on a large estate in the beautiful valley of the Kanawha, sixteen miles above Point Pleasant, where he and his wife, Katherine Madison, are buried. Their children intermarried with the Craigs, Alexanders, Clarks. Nelsons and Beattys, whose history is interwoven with that of Virginia, Kentucky and parts of Ohio, Indiana and Missouri. Their oldest daughter, Jane Madison Arbuckle. married Captain Joseph McMullin, one of the heroes of Point Pleasant, a family which subsequently furnished many soldiers to the Confederacy.
