Antony,

Thanks for the reply.

I do use the spelling in the record for each source reference, I was just thinking about the primary entry for family trees, pedigree charts, etc. I ended up going with the Meagher version because that's the one that made it down to me. I then use the Maher version for his father.

Sorry to take so long to reply, for some reason I'm not getting email notices of replies to my postings.

Dear Ruth,
Are you still on Ancestry? My Uncle Thomas Maher passed away several years ago, as did my mother Pauline Maher Whittaker. I have one 88 yr old Uncle Bob Maher, who is still wondering what became of his Grandfather, Corneilius Maher.

I too am a great granddaughter of Corneilius, descended from a second ? marriage to Catherine "Kate" Hansbury. Have you found any other information that would be helpful in our search? It is difficult for me to find things in England and Ireland, from here. Was your grandmother the child of Corneilus? My Uncle Thomas knew you as Ruth Lilly, I believe.

Hope you are well, Ruth. I am excited to know we come from the same ancestor!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Clemons

Searching for the Mahers of MA and NY

Have been trying for months!! My great-grandmother is Catherine Maher (possibly Maloney) she was born in Ireland. By 1920 she was widowed and living in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Living with her was her brother, Thomas Maloney, and her 4 children, Margaret, Catherine, Ilene and Francis. Her daughter, Catherine is my grandmother. She maried Robert Colley. Together they had 4 children, Robert, Dorothy, Patricia and William. I have some birthdates, some dates of death, however, I can't seem to get anywhere!! I am STUCK and feel like I am hitting my head on a brick wall!! The family basically lived in MA, NY and in NJ. If you have any information at all or even THINK you might please reply. I will take all the help I can get!
Thanks
Dorrie

Hi I am so sorry that it has taken so long for me to replay. I have a lot of things going on right now. My Margaret Maher's father is actually Patrick Maher and her mother is Catherine Maloney. I'm sorry. The way that you trace back is by going through this site, and other sites. For people that were born in Massachusetts there is an excellent source called the New England Historic Genealogical Society, they have a sight, AmericanAncestors.com that is very helpful. There are also a lot of other sites out there. Good Luck!!

I would enter each with the name as it is recorded in the record you are using as a source..

There is no "correct" spelling of a name- just the way it was recorded each time a document was completed, and with a name like Maher/Mahar/Meagher/Mar/Marr there are many, many valid options that could have been used.

This is more of a best genealogical practices question, but since it involves a Maher / Meagher I thought I'd post here.

I finally tracked down my immigrant ggf in Ireland. The baptism record in Ireland spells the name Maher, but everything else I've found in the US is Meagher.

Should I use the birth spelling or the later version he used for most of his life in my FTM records and GEDCOMs I upload? Would making a notation of some sort regarding the alternate spelling be a good idea?

Thanks.

Hi - I think we are related - my Grandmother was Margaret Mary Conboy, her maiden name was Maher and her father was Edward Maher and her mother was Anna Walsh - My grandmother was from Brooklyn and had 3 siblings, Helen, Jack and Edward - How did you trace the family back to the 1700's - this is fascinating - My father is Kevin Conboy -

I look forward to hearing from you -

FINALLY - a Maher blog!!

Janet, thank you for starting this blog! I am also a Maher (it is my maiden name). I have come to a dead end with my Maher line. My father is James Norris Maher - his father Roy Clayton Maher - his father Norris Henry Maher -and his father William Maher.

I started researching my genealogy 38 years ago. The story I heard from my elderly Maher relatives was that William Maher was an infant born on board a ship coming from Ireland. Right off the coast of America, the ship sank, whereby Williams' parents died. The story continues to explain that William was found strapped to a floating piece of lumber with oilcloth as protection.

This story has led me down paths that I cannot verify. Was he adopted and given the name of Maher? Was he actually raised by relatives? His birth place is listed as Ireland, which causes me to think that maybe he wasn't born on ship; rather, in Ireland prior to departure. I've even considered that he may have ended up in an orphanage in New York, which may have led him to be involved with the Orphan Trains.

I am not certain, but I think I found him in the 1860 Ohio census as an 18 year old. There are many William Mahers so I am unsure if this is the right one. I do not know William's parents or siblings names for sure.

I do know that he married Matilda Catherine Taylor in 1868 Minnesota. She is referenced as "Catherine" in most all the census records. The Taylor lineage appears substantial, but he is only mentioned once.

Is this story familiar to anyone? My aunt who told me this story was Mildred Marie Maher, daughter or Norris Henry Maher (and sister of my grandfather Roy).

Maher.)Virginia (Ginny) Mellencamp , born ,in Devils Lake, N.D.daughter of Alice and Howard Maher.

Virginia (Ginny) Mellencamp
Virginia (Ginny) Mellencamp.
died August 22, 2011 in Burlington, Vt.
She was born on November 7, 1929 in Devils Lake, N.D.,
the daughter of Alice and Howard Maher.
Ginny is predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, James Mellencamp,
and her son, Timothy.
She is survived by her three daughters, Amy Mellencamp, Lisa Mellencamp, and Leslie Van Wagner; her three sons-in-law, Charlie Smith, Chuck Randall, and Matt Van Wagner; her grandchildren Emily and Chas Smith from Vermont; Julia, Sarah, and Emma Fleckman from Texas; Kate and Matthew Van Wagner from New Hampshire; Kate's partner, Lluvia Mulvaney-Stanak from Vermont; former son-in-law, Dan Fleckman; and step-grandchildren Jenna, Kelly, Chelsea Randall and Christina Moreno from Texas;
as well as her brother and sister-in-law Jack and Helen Maher from Washington. While attending Marjorie Webster Junior College, Ginny met Jim Mellencamp, a handsome young cadet at the Naval Academy on a blind date. After she graduated in 1948, they were married and Ginny embarked on the life of a Navy wife until Jim resigned his commission in 1954. Throughout the rest of their life together, Jim and Ginny resided in Jackson, Mich.; Erie, Pa.; Barrington, R.I.; and Pittsboro, N.C. Ginny was never in a new town long before she had made lifelong friends, assumed leadership positions in local volunteer agencies such as the Sarah Reed Center for Children in Erie, Pa. and TAP-IN in Barrington, R.I., and become active in the local Presbyterian church. After Jim's death in 2010, Ginny moved to The Converse Home in Burlington, Vt. to be closer to her family. Ginny instilled a love for learning and travel; a passion for reading, art, and culture; and a call to help others in the lives of her daughters, her grandchildren, and in all those who were lucky enough to be a part of her life. An open house in celebration of Ginny's life will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 26 at the home of Amy Mellencamp, 110 Summit Street in Burlington, Vt. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Leukemia Society, 401 Harrison Oaks Blvd., Suite 200, Cary, NC 27513. Condolences may be sent to Leslie Van Wagner at 80 Stillwater Drive, Nashua NH 03062. If you wish to post an online remembrance of Ginny,
(in the Erie Times-News on August 25, 2011 )

I am not sure where in Ireland they were from cause I didn't pay for the extra money to look but I am very interested in that.

My gfather, William Joseph Maher, was born in 1863 in Rathmacan, Co Kilkenny, and emigrated to America about 1884, married Catherine McShane (who had also emigrated from Crossmaglen, Co Armagh) and settled in Omaha, Nebraska.
Hello! I am searching for an Annette Maher (nee PLETINK?) who lived in Canada prior to moving with her family to California in the 1950's or 1960's. I believe her father or spouse worked for Disney Studios in Anaheim. My mother Anna M. and Annette became good friends in Canada. Unfortunately,
my mother recently passed away before she could be reunited with Annette. I would still love to hear from Annette since she meant a great deal to my Mom. Thank you.

The only clues I have are from the June 1, 1880 Chicago, Cook County Illinois Census.

My great grandfather, Dennis Tracy and my Great grandmother Ellen Meagher/Maher are listed with their children. Jer Costigan is listed as Dennis' First cousin which makes me think that one of Dennis sisters, ( I have no names ) may have married him. The census simply says that Jer is a laborer and I do not find him with the family later.
The fact that he is a first cousin makes me think even more that Dennis' sister married a Costigan. What do you think?

When did your Jer Costigan go to New Zealand. After June 1, 1880???

John Maher and Ellen Burke

I am researching the family of my Grandfather, Patrick J. Maher.

My Grandfather's parents were John Maher and Ellen Burke. Although I have not yet found their Marriage Certificate, I do know that they were married circa 1884. According to the National Archives of Ireland Census, in 1901 John and Ellen were living at 1 Garrymore, Ballymacward, County Galway, Ireland with their 10 children: John, Patrick, Ulick, Thomas, James, Michael, Denis, Sabina, MaryAnne, and Martin. T. Their ages ranged from 15 to 2.

Later Patrick married Margaret Meehan and lived in Watertown, MA. Ulick married Mary Egan and also lived in Watertown, MA. Thomas married Catherine (?) and lived in Manhattan, N.Y. Sabina married Dennis Feeney and lived in Quincy, MA. Mary Anne married Myles Cosgrove and lived in Brooklyn, N.Y. IT is believed that Martin died in WWI in the English Army, but I have not been able to confirm.

If you think any of these people are related to you, please let me know. I have not been able to find any information (other than the Ireland census) on John, James, Michael, Denis, or Martin.

Nancy - crazy.cat22@cox.net
