I again started searching my Mahony ancestors today. Many of your names are the same as many of mine (Denis, Daniel, Catherine, as well as Collins), but mine are in the parish of Lislee (I think). I am specifically looking for an Ellen Mahony, born about 1810, who married Jeremiah Neil. The marriage was recorded in Timoleague in 1835. A Denis Collins was a sponsor of the birth of one of their children.

this may not be the place to post this but does anyone know this branch of Mahonys?

Thank you. sue

I would be very interested in hearing about the Collins family in Ceancullig who raised this Denis Mahony. Were these Collinses the family of Daniel Collins and Mary Neil, by any chance?

http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Cork/Dromdaleag...

At Hornell, Steuben County, New York, USA in 1868:

In matrimony were joined Daniel, son of Michael MAHONY and Margaret CARROLL, and Mary, daughter of Patrick CONNORS and Catherine GORMAN; witnessed by Dennis GORMAN and Eliza[beth] REGAN.

Daniel Mahony was more commonly known as Daniel MAHONEY and Mary Connors and her brothers were more commonly known as O’CONNOR.

Thanks to the website of Limerick Genealogy, an accredited IFHF (Irish Family History Foundation) County Genealogy Centre…

http://limerick.rootsireland.ie/

…I have recently discovered the origins of Daniel & Mary (CONNORS/O’CONNOR) MAHONEY/MAHONY in Kilbehenny Parish, County Limerick:

Daniel MAHONY was baptized in 1833 as the son of Michael MAHONY & Margaret CARROLL.

Patrick Connors and Catherine Gorman were married in 1836.

Kilbehenny lies in the southeast corner of County Limerick and borders the Counties of Cork and Tipperary.

In hopes of learning more about the MAHONY, CONNORS and GORMAN families of Kilbehenny, I have extracted all of the baptismal and marriage index records for these surnames. I have also purchased select records from the online index that I hoped would reveal more details about my family—some proved to be matches and others did not. I have compiled this information in a Microsoft Excel worksheet so that all the information can be filtered and sorted in various ways.

I have invested a significant number of Euros and hours in this project, but I will share a copy of my database in Excel, PDF or a browser-friendly format freely in exchange for any information that you may have on anyone who may descend from the CARROLL, CONNORS/O’CONNOR, GORMAN or MAHONEY/MAHONY of Kilbehenny (or neighboring parishes in the Counties of Cork and Tipperary) and/or Hornell.

Please contact me privately at perry@streeter.com to share your information and obtain a copy of my database.

Thanks for your help!

Perry

Perry Streeter (perry@streeter.com)
www.perry.streeter.com

Clarence Robert MAHONEY Iowa

I am looking for information on Clarence R. MAHONY. We think it was Mahony, anyway. He was born 7 November 1936 in Des Moines, IA and 'adopted' around 1948 (not sure if there's any legal paperwork to that effect, though), and moved to Missouri with Louis & Mildred (MARTIN) MANHEIM. We don't know who his birth parents were. Some family lore says he was part Cherokee, but not sure how accurate that is.

Any information would be appreciated.
I am currently compiling the family tree of the "defunct" Dromore branch, Sorry folks we are alive and well, all evidence fully backed up by birth, marriage certs and the occasional DNA test (thanks to Dr Finbarr) Delighted to be putting the finishing touches to a Family tree that goes back a 1000 yrs seed, breed and generation. Btw we are decended from Richard Mahony, brother of Rev Denis. They were the 2 that quarrelled, Richard didnt die without issue. The RC records confirm that Richard fathered a child with johanna Shea, knowingly provided for him and made arrangements for him. His name was Jeoffry and he is my Great Great Grandfather
Hi Finbarr and all who have made requests
Firstly the Capt refers to Capt Daniel Mahony Lackeen, this guy is a legend! he really is. he was a distinguished soldier who fought at fontenoy, pretty much single handedly won a decisive battle, saved the country of France, (I am not joking) he was tasked with personally telling Louis 14th of victory, Louis promoted him to full colonel and later tasked him to govern a huge area in Spain where he ended his days a General. whew

Mahony from Carron, Co Kerry

My 2 x great grandmother is Mary Mahony. She married Patrick Murphy on 21Jan1904 in RC church Rathmore, Co Kerry. Patrick was the son of Daniel & Bridget (Donoghue) Murphy from Gortdromakiery, Co Kerry. Bridget was from this area and Daniel came from Kilquane, Co Kerry.

Mary's father was Jeremaih Mahony and I believe her mother was Ellen Sullivan. I have found their childrens birth records online and they are all born in Carron, Co Kerry. Thadeus 20Jan1872, Mary 25Feb1874, John 20Jul1876 & Patrick 27Oct1879. I believe there is at least one more girl.

From the baptism of the oldest child (Thadeus) is is possible that Jeremiah's parents were Thadius & Julia Mahony as they were the sponsors.

Mary and Patrick Murphy had Daniel 18Nov1907 in Carron, Jeremiah 01Nov1909(not sure of birth place yet), Patrick 03May1911 in Dromahoe, Co Cork (just over the border from Carron area) & Bridget 05Apr1913 in Dromahoe.

They immigrated to New Zealand in 1913 and I basically know where everyone is from here. I have planned our first ever family reunion for St Patrick's Day this year and are writing a book to come out next year (2013) to celebrate 100 years in New Zealand.

It would be great to connect some dead people with some live people.

Did you ever find out more info? It looks there are at least two marriages in Dunmanway of a Timothy Mahony to an Honora Haurahan.

This is the earlier one, from 1833 -
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...

There were Haurahans in Ardcahan in the Fanlobbus tithe applotment taken in 1826. No sign of Mahonys though; they may have shown up later.

The later marriage seems more like yours, as there is a James Haurahan as a witness. From 1839 -
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...

Rats, John, but guess what you're invited to the party anyway.

I'm pretty sure from the release of the additional online records that my Mahonys were the Bredagh ones. I also suspect they had a relationship with Mahonys in Toughbaun, also out in the boondocks - but haven't tried to prove that connection. Their names also so closely resemble a tribe in Clashduff/Tonafora, there could be a link there too.

I know what you mean, this is like a good mystery book you can't put down.

Hello!

Very wise to say "not yet" on the Collinses as they were like termites - everywhere!

Actually, I have more solid confirmation my Mahonys were from Bredagh, thanks to the release of the remaining Cork church records in October.

These first names seem to cluster south of R586. I can find several families with those names, and I suspect they have a link. North of that road, it feels a bit different culturally. I haven't found a Keane Mahony north of R586 - not yet.

The Chelsea, Massachusetts Mahoneys also have Daniel, Timothy, Denis, Catherine, and Kean in the mix, as well as a John F., born in 1862 in Ballygarvan (my Dad's grandfather). There were cousins from Skibbereen, although over here I have found Sullivans, Gainys (Geany), Ahearns, and Sheridans, but not Collinses. At least not yet.

If you think it worth your time, let me know, and I'll send you what I have.

Mahonys at parties in Skibbereen we weren't invited to

Hello,

I am assembling quite a bit of data on Mahonys around Skibbereen and am wondering if anybody is related to these in particular.

Denis Mahony showed up for the wedding of Daniel Collins = Mary Mahony (d. 1901, age 75) in Drimoleague/Drinagh 4-Feb-1845, right before the start of the famine. Daniel C. was from Adrigool, north end of Castlehaven parish. I am investigating Mary and these Mahonys. Daniel C. + Mary eventually settled in Cullomane East, Caheragh, with Tim, Daniel, Margaret, Catherine, and Kean the baptismal sponsors for the Collins children in Cullomane, 1852-1865. It is unknown where Daniel + Mary lived and whether they had children elsewhere prior to 1852. This is my grandmom's direct line.

Funny thing is these same Mahony names show up in a branch on my granddad's side (not my direct line), making me think the same Mahony crowd showed up for events in two families. Among the Collinses of Lissane, Caheragh, Margaret Mahony married Denis Collins, 1853 in D&D. Mahony sponsors for their children, 1853-1873, were Denis, Catherine, Timothy, Daniel, and Kean.

These names tend to cluster most heavily around 1) Clashduff/Tonafora, with Clashduff connection to Driminidy; 2) Bredagh/Rearahinagh; 3) Minanes (a big portion of whom emigrated, but I now think enough of them stayed home to have hung around for the weddings/baptisms); and 4) a lighter cluster from Lettergorman, which eventually dissipated. There are sprinklings of these first names elsewhere in Caheragh, Abbeystrowry, and Castlehaven parishes, and I am even looking over into Bantry, Skull, Kilmacabea, etc.

The problem is, the period 1845-1852 is very mysterious as to the whereabouts of Daniel C = Mary M, and like so many of us I have no clue as to the circumstances of my gg-grandparents meeting each other. Since I have no info about the gap, I don't know if there were children born, and I cannot observe any naming pattern in effect. I have viewed the Tenure Book for Cullomane East and notice that Daniel Collins was not *yet* in Cullomane, but was there when the publication of Griffiths Valuation for the area was finalized in 1853. I have asked Eneclann, through their findmypast.ie website about the date the tenure book covering Cullomane was published but have not yet received a response. There does not seem to be a Tenure Book for Adrigool/Castlehaven that I can find, unfortunately.

I am biased towards a potential Bredagh/Rearahinagh connection, due to Rearahinagh's close proximity to Adrigool and north Castlehaven parish. I have not yet been able to extract anything useful out of the additional non-Mahony sponsor names in Cullomane for additional info. Nor have I even started looking at the possibility that my ancestors could have gone by an agnomen, such as Keane.

I also have info from area tithe applotments. If anybody else is poking around in these Mahonys, I would appreciate comparing notes!

I am looking for people known as Mahony Ryan's from the Doon parish area. In the 1870's and 80's my ancestor was known as a Mahony Ryan.
Thomas Ryan was married in Thurles in 1862. He and wife had several children. At some point in time they moved to Doon where they had more children.
He worked as a groundmen at the Mercy Convent, Doon in the 1880's.
I found an entry in 1901 Irish Census for Doon with Ryan Mahony as a surname. Name of John
Looking for siblings and parents.
All help much appreciated.

Hi again. Happy Easter! If you can give me Catherine's maiden name I will try to locate the marriage record after the Easter break. That assumes, of course, that they were married in Ireland. If you have the date of birth for their first child, it would give me an approximate date for their marriage. Were the children born in Ireland? Finbar

Thanks for the quick response. I am definitely going to look into the dna project. I just really started using this site and still am unsure of how to use it most efficiently. I found my ancestor Cain Mahoney in the 1920 census with his wife Catherine Mahoney and his four children. Any suggestions of how to find their marriage certificate or record. I tried through the site but haven't gotten anything. Cain's father from the census was from Ireland so if I find Cain's father's name I will be in good shape. Let me know if anyone can help? thanks again!

Finbar is right. He also lives in Ireland. We Mahoneys with the ey have to stick together. I can tell you from my own experience that every Mahoney has a Cain in the family, and it's almost only us Mahoneys. As far as spelling, your guess is as good as mine; I think it depends as much upon the one writing it down as the one being named. I have seen Cain, Kean, Keane, and I don't know what else. Try them all, check out the O'Mahony Society, and keep us posted.

Hello,
If you try www.irishgenealogy.ie you will see a possible 160 or so Cain Mahony/Mahoneys listed. The site is free.

I contend that the original version was Cian, but that is another story. To find where your gggrandfather came from why not join the O Mahony Society yDNA project at www.omahonysociety.org

A 37 marker test, taken through our project at FTDNA, should be enough to start with. We have more than 80 participants (April 2011)and few very good Irish based anchors that could point you to the correct search area.

Good luck

Finbar

I am trying to find out where my ancestors are from in Ireland, and since my grandfather and great grandfather were born in America it is really hard to trace the tree. My grandfather is Harold Mahoney Jr. and my great grandfather is Harold Mahoney Sr. My great great grandfather would be Cain (not sure if that is how it is spelled?) Mahony who married Mary Shafer. We spell our name Mahoney, however, I am not sure that was the original spelling. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cain Mahony would of been born around the 1870's

I am looking for anyone connected to a Timothy Deasy/Honora Mahony family. They married in Dunmanway on 2-27-1838. They were cousins so there was a dispensation. This Mary must have died young because another Mary was baptized on March 14, 1842 with Denis Mahony and Margaret Deasy serving as sponsors. Denis Deasy was baptized August 8, 1844, with John Deasy and Julia Mahony serving as sponsors.
I have been trying to trace my Mahony family (spelled as Mahoney in the US).
I need to correct an error. I believe Denis, father of Michael, born c1891, married Honora Donovan. In trying to find who Denis's parents were, I looked at Denis Mahony and Ellen Coakley as HIS parents. Denis and Ellen married in 1828 in Dunmanway, probably because that was her parish.
I am really, really interested in trying to find if Nan and my mother are related in some way. Perhaps because I looked like my mother rather than my father, as I was growing up, that adds more interest. Jan

I cannot thank you enough for responding to my query. I have tried for so many years to learn which Mahony family was mine (beyond my ggrandfather). When I saw a picture of Nan Mahony, I almost fell off my chair. It was as if my own mother was looking back at me. I realize this could be total happenstance, but I have heard people talk about visiting the country of their ancestors and finding pictures on the wall that looked like their parents, and in most cases, their families WERE connected.

I was SO SADDENED when I read that Nan died at age 34. That means both mother and daughter died really young. Oh, dear!!!

I was wondering what Nan and Denis's mother's maiden name was. I was in Dublin last year, looking at vital records, but couldn't seem to find a marriage for Michael. I did find one with Mary Hurley. Do you think that was Nan's mother?

I have a great interest in family history. I love learning about who my ancestors were, where they lived, and what they were like. I know some people are simply interested in names and dates, but I am a "people" person and want to know more about my family. In this case, I am wondering if your grandfather, Michael Mahony, is part of my extended family.

My ggrandfather, Maurice Mahony (not a name that ran in the family) was born out of wedlock in 1826. He was baptized in Dunmanway with Toom/Toam listed as his residence. His parents were Michael Mahony and Julia Collins. There didn't seem to be any Collins families in Toam in the 1820's (time of the Tithes) so I am thinking Maurice was raised by the Mahonys, who did live in Toom/Toam. I think in earlier days, both in the US and in Ireland, the idea that a child was born out of wedlock was almost as serious as someone committing capital murder. To my way of thinking, a moment of passion was hardly a crime in any way. I think the Catholic Church really focused on this so the poor woman suffered sometimes for the rest of her life, but the husband simply married and raised a family and lived a normal life.

I looked at information for Michael and it seems that Denis Mahony and Ellen Coakley were Michael's parents. I tried to get one generation back but had difficulty knowing which Denis was the one who married Ellen Coakley. My grandmother did not pass on a great deal of information to her children, but she stressed to them that "We were related to the Coakleys." My uncle, who is now 90, gave me this information. I didn't know if the Coakleys were related to the Mahonys or to Maurice's birth mother, Julia Collins.
(I wonder if Maurice's father Michael did marry and I wonder if his birth mother Julia Collins married.)

Maurice married Eliza Kingston in Drimoleague in 1856 and had Michael, Julia, Nora, Denis, and John. Eliza died young and Maurice remarried and had Ann (born in Leitra), Ellen (my grandmother) and Paul.

Let me send this off before it gets too long. My email address is janfortado@comcast.net if you wish to email me directly. And again, thank you VERY, VERY much for emailing me.
My father, Denis Mahony was a brother to Nan Mahony leitra. She had one other Brother, Dan Mahony. Nan Mahony married Ben Shorten and lived in Brighton, England until she died at age 34 years and is Buried in Hove which is near Brighton. My father was raised by the Collind Family, Ceanncoilla, Drimoleague. Nan's mother died at Nans birth.
Nan and Ben Shorten had 2 sons. Ben is also buried in Hove . The Shorten's Parents grave is in Dunmanway. The Mahony family farm in Leitra passed to Philomena Mahony who married Con Crowley of Inch, Dunmanway. As far as I know Philomena would have been a first cousin to Nan. The Deanes owned 2 Bars in Drimoleague village. The Bars are still there. Philomena Crowley died recently and the ancestral mahony farm in Leitra was put on sale. However it was not sold and is still owned by Philomena's family.

additional theory information. I think that John might have been a farmer in Ireland and moved to Iowa (I found a John Mahoney with son David b.1860 in NY in Little Sioux in 1880 Census). We know David's father is named John, but don't know for sure about John's wife's name or their other children. That is why I selected this family as a possible match. The civil war ending and possibly John's death might have led David back to NYC. The 1885 Iowa census shows John (77) and his four sons (all born in NY) working the farm. The boys were David, William, Daniel, and Martin 26, 27, 28, and 29 yrs old respectively.

I have a David Mahony born in NYC in March 1860. He fell off all census records until appearing in the 1900 census married to Annie McCaffrey (ca. 1893) My grandfather William was then born April 1894. My theory is that David is the son of John and Ellen Mahony who were born in Ireland, lived in NY where they had several children, then moved to Iowa in 1860 for some reason, had some more kids, and David moved back to NY alone. I just have no proof that these two families are related. No one alive seems to know David and my pop (william b 1894) never spoke of him to me. Even my dad was only a baby when David did in the early 1930s. Any help? David is in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census for Brooklyn NY...1900 census says he was born March 1860 in NYC.

Thomas Mahony m. Catherine Lee in Kildorrery, Cork, in early 1800's

Although most Mahonys came from the West Cork area, there was a pocket of Mahonys in the north central part of Cork. I am interested in a Thomas Mahony who married Catherine Lee. They lived in the town of Kildorrery when Margaret was born in 1828 and Mary in 1830 and Ellen in 1832 and Thomas in 1833. Baptismal sponsors were Michael Kearney, Winifred Carroll, Edmond Birmingham, and Catherine McMahon. There is some connection with the Carrolls of Kildorrery, but I have not yet figured it out. It is possible this the son Thomas who emigrated to New Orleans, or perhaps the son Thomas who was born in 1833 emigrated to New Orleans.

McCarthy, Mahony, Mally familes of Co. Kerry Ireland

I am looking for information on my grandmother's ancestors from Co. Kerry, Ireland. Her name was Ellen Mary McCarthy. She was born in 1889 in Killorglin. Her parents were Jeremiah McCarthy and Elizabeth Mahony. Elizabeth died after giving birth to her third child. Her children were Margaret, Ellen and John Paul. Some of his decendants still live in the Killorglin area. Jeremiah's parents were John McCarthy and Mary Mally. We are not able to trace back and we only have names for her ancestors. If anyone has information I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Nan Mahony, daughter of Michael, raised by Deanes in Leitra, Drimoleague, Cork born 1920's?

I wondered if there was anyone who is familiar with the surnames Mahoney/y and Deane in the townland of Leitra, parish of Drimoleague, Co. Cork, Ireland. Nan Mahony, perhaps born in the 1920's, was the daughter of Michael Mahony. Apparently Nan's mother died young so her mother's sister (married to a Deane) raised her. I do not know the mother's maiden name. I believe Michael was the son of Denis Mahony and Honora Donovan, and, perhaps Denis, who married Honora, was the son of Denis Mahony and Ellen Coakley. Thank you.
