Since my original post I now know that John Maitland was from Armagh, Ireland. His family is believed to have been a military one. He and Margaret Marsh were the parents of Emily Maud Maitland, born on 12 Dec 1857 in Malta. They were probably also the parents of Annie Elizabeth (b abt 1850) and Fanny (b abt 1855); the marriage records of Annie and Fanny show the father to be John Maitland, but the mother is of course not named. I have not been able to find any record of their births. Emily, Annie and Fanny all married in Bengal, India in the 1870. Their husbands were brothers (surname Lemarchand/Le Marchand). Having found no birth records for Annie or Fanny in India, Ireland, Great Britain or British birth overseas, I am wondering whether the answer might lie in Ceylon.

Problem is I think there's two harriett parkers. My harriet was born in ellisburg to Peter Parker and Lydia Williams. Peter parker died in the Civil War and I can't find a trace of her after the 1860 census. Of course in the 1860 census I can't find Peter's other children. They could have been staying with a relative I suppose.

I saw your tree. I grew up in Belleville and Ellisburg so I know all the families pretty well.

Sorry about that I got my names mixed up. I found an obit for William Maitland at the same time I was typing. Brain cramp. That is Olive's obit though. You should go here http://www.nnygenealogy.com/ and ask the webmaster Sid about the headstones. There's a message page. If he doesn't know about them he can find out easily enough. He's got a lot of records that haven't been put online. I'm interested in the family because they were somehow connected to my grannie. The maitlands were related to her somehow. There was a Harriet parker that seems to have no record of where she went. I've always wondered if she married William Maitland. Never have figured it out though. I'm not certain it's the same Harriet.

Leona

Actually, Olive's maiden name was Maitland and her married name Presley, so her husband would be William H. Presley, not William Maitland. So I doubt that she would be buried next to William Maitland.

Olive was living in and died in William Presley (Jr)'s house at 923 Water St. Olive's son, Joseph Presley (my grandfather) lived at 913 Water St, and Joseph's wife-to-be Ruby Merrick was living directly behind them at 10 North St (which also no longer exists) at the time.

When I look at Google maps to the empty lot where the Presley houses should have stood, there appears to be a couple of headstones toward the back of the property next to the trees. That's why I wondered if they buried their family there.

Do you happen to know where any of the Maitlands were buried? I'm descended through Liddious and his wife Sary Ann - through their daughter Olive (aka Alice) Maitland and her husband William Presley.

I found several old newspaper articles on the Maitlands, and have a few clues about where they were living. Olive's obit shows she was living with her son when she died - at 923 Water St, Watertown, NY. One of her other sons shows he was living at 913 Water St, Watertown, NY.

However, those address numbers no longer exist in Watertown. The address numbers stop at 910, then there's a large, vacant lot across the street, and then the numbers next to the vacant lot I believe start again in the 950's.

Since there is no address that I found in the tax records, I'm wondering if the Maitlands were burying each other on their properties, and that's why the land is vacant - that it's a private family cemetery?

Anybody living in Watertown who might know the answer?

Thank you!

I'm looking for my long lost relatives that my Great Grandfather John W. Maitland fathered with his second wife somewhere in West Virginia.

He walked off and left my Great Grandmother Bessie Smith Maitland to raise 5 children and started a new life with a new wife. He was born in 1877 in England and lived in Rockport, KY and Royalton, IL. He died in W. Virginia and after a while when no one would claim the body, he was sent back to IL and is buried in the Herrin City Cemetary next to wife #1.

Any information you can give concerning his life and death would be greatly appreciated.

John MAITLAND of Armagh, b. 1800-1820 approx

I am seeking information on John MAITLAND and his wife, Margaret MARSH. All I know of them is that John was from Armagh and that he was a military man who most probably spent part of his life in India. I have found a possible match in Quartermaster John Maitland (1805-1862) of 48th Northamptonshire Regt whose wife was Margaret (1815-1860). They both died in India. However, there is no certainty that they are the correct couple. Any information gratefully received!

Hi,

I do not recognise any of those names in your tree however I have very little knowledge of that era.

My Great Grandfather was Arthur Maitland who used to be a Policeman, Nurse and Teacher (not all at once :). Arthur had a child with Adeline Scott call Roy Maitland. Roy Maitland was born in 1926 so I can only assume Arthur must have been born a good number of years earlier.
I do not know if Arthurs father was born in the UK or Jamaica either way do any of these names sound familier?

Regards
Peter M Maitland

Hi Susan - Just seen your message. Harry Holmes was also my grandfather. Would love to learn more as I know that I have a number of aunts and uncles that I have never met. You can get in touch by email of janeanneadamson@hotmail.com

Best regards,
Jane

I don't know whether you are still in pursuit of the Holmes family, but I have a fairly detailed ancestry back to Benjamin Holmes (b cc 1772), who was the father of John Gilbert Holmes (1798-1864), who by his first wife Marion Richardson was the father of Col Henry Holmes (1829-1913) of Greytowers in Hornchurch Essex. The eldest son of Col Henry was Harry Holmes (1864-1931) who married Grace Isabel Barry (dau of Sir Francis Tress Barry), and moved to Balgreggan, Wigtownshire in Scotland some time after 1893. Harry and Grace had a son (Harry) Gilbert Holmes 1893-1960 and I assume this is your grandfather.

Both the Holmes and Richardson families were originally Quakers. Col Henry was certain brought up as a Quaker but may have converted to the established church on his marriage. The Holmes family came from Sunderland where they were shipbuilders and brewers.

I am not related to them at all, got involved when trying to trace one Reginald Holmes, b 1875, the youngest brother of Harry. Reginald Holmes married one of my distant relations but is impossible to trace after 1901 and there is a distinct flavour of black sheep about him.

If you write to me at my private email celiamoss@compuserve.com I'll send you a descent outline. Excuse rushed note.

Celia E Moss
London

I have recently discovered that this Maitland line is not connected with the family I am attempting to trace. Before I knew this to be the case I put a Maitland tree on Ancestry, showing Frances Dalziel Maitland's family, in the hope of making contact with someone who could verify or otherwise my hope of a connection. This tree is separate from my own tree. I have not removed it, as although it is not my family the information may be helpful to others.----------Frances Dalziel Maitland was born in Tamil Nadu, Madras on 24 Mar 1833 (source IGI), the daughter of Lt Col John Maitland and his wife Alice Maud (nee Charsley). ----------If you would like to email me sdonleaATgmail.com I can send you some further information.

I use the surf canyon free browser add on search engine which plumbs search results from, say, Google in more depth. (www.surfcanyon.com). Via surf canyon there are many mentions of these Maitlands in scanned Victorian publications in Google books, which give a fascinating picture of their lives and times.

Thus a John Maitland, writer, is mentioned in Whig publications/pamphlets as having attended lively meetings often in connection with the Reform Bill. Some of these meetings were held in Glasgow. A recent visit I made to the new Family History Centre in Edinburgh revealed that the 1841 census showed a John Maitland, writer, (aged 45, born in England) staying in a sort of hotel in Glasgow, with many people who did not seem to be of his social class.

The death certificate of Kenmure Maitland (1824-1873), Sheriff Clark of the Lothians, gives his father´s profession as a political agent. Thus John Maitland (mar. F Dalyell) may possibly have been on Whig political business in Glasgow on the 1841 census night, instead of with three of his children in South Circus Place.

The 1861 census return for Kenmure Maitland (residing 8 Gilmore Place, Edinburgh) shows him with two children, John Gordon (13 in 1861) and Catherine Stuart and married to Louisa Gilbert Maitland. A look at his will and testament shows the executer of his estate as being John Gordon Maitland, advocate. John Gordon was a student of law in the 1871 census, living with Kenmure and Louisa (no Catherine) at 16 Scotland Street. Kenmure had downsized in residence and was renting out 8 Gilmore Place to one John Dewar, according to the inventory of his estate.

I only saw this thread recently and was interested because it touches on the main Maitland pedigree in a number of areas.

Firstly the South Circus Place household:

Eliza Maitland does appear to be the widow of John Bushby Maitland, who was born John Hay Bushby, but took the name of Maitland when his mother, Grizel Maitland, inherited her father’s estate. The Susan Bushby must a relation of his. Eliza’s maiden name I believe was Carnac, although there are several different spellings.

Frederick Lewis Heriot Maitland is quite a distant cousin and, as you say, a grandson of Capt. Frederick Lewis Maitland. I have a problem however with Mary Turner Wedderburn Heriot-Maitland. Although Frederick had four sisters, none of them was named Mary & the only candidate I know of would be Mary Turner Scrymgeour-Wedderburn, who married a James Dalgleish Heriot-Maitland, but not until 1903!

Lauderdale Maitland is recorded as the eldest son of John Bushby Maitland & Eliza Carnac. John (b. 1822), Kenmure (b. 1824) and Mary (b. 1828) are the children of John Maitland & Frances Dalyell, as is James (b. 1833). Perhaps the parents, with him as the youngest child, were just visiting friends or relations at the time of the Census?

The interesting fact is that the death certificate of John (husband of Frances) gives as informant ‘L Maitland, half-brother’. This is presumably Lauderdale. But I cannot identify John’s other parent.

Frances Jane does not seem to be part of this family. The only Blair connection I can find is that John Bushby (Maitland)’s mother-in-law was a Blair.

Apart from your suggestion that Fances Dalyell might be a Gordon descendant, there is another Maitland connection in that Rev Dr James Maitland who was minister of Kells from 1826 and who married Louisa Bellamy-Gordon had a sister whose daughter (Elizabeth Hobbs) married William Maitland, brother of Lauderdale & John. I don’t have a date, but William he is recorded as second son after Lauderdale, who was born 1809.
Thank you, smaitlan1! The John Maitland I am looking for had three daughters - Annie Elizabeth (b abt 1850, place unknown), Fanny (b abt 1855, place unknown) and Alice Maude (b 12 Dec 1857 in Malta) They married three Le Marchand (Lemarchand) brothers in Lahore in the 1870s. The witness at one of the weddings was T. Maitland. Family legend has it that the Maitlands were a military family. I have searched England & Wales births, Scottish births, India Office baptismal records and Maltese church records (Church of England and Church of Scotland) without success.

I will try to find time to search my John MAITLAND files. I have generation after generation, going back to 1750 and mostly in Aberdeen, but not of this line. I have accumulated a large number of mistakes over time and, as you know, there were many John MAITLANDs.

I had one GROS death record list Frances MAITLAND as a father of my John MAITLAND, only to later find out it was in error and the real father was (yet another) John MAITLAND). However, I also had at least 2 legit Frances MAITLAND relatives back in the 1800s.

There is no mention of any sisters of Lt-Col John Maitland in the articles & the 'official' pedigrees do not go that far - sorry I can't be of more help on that score.

But I did see from Elsie's IGI record that her mother was given as Alice Maude, whereas in one article she refers to her mother as Alice Charsley of Australia. And Alice does not match any of the the Maude names in your post of 26 November.

Thank you for your reply, timaitland2. I have seen Elsie's birth and christening on IGI and also found her at a boarding school in Lewisham in the 1901 Census, along with Frances. My interest would be in possible Maitland aunts (born in the 1850s) of Elsie and Frances. I would very much like to read the articles, if only for the purpose of ruling out this line of enquiry.
