My mother was Alice Malia & her father was Martin Joseph Malia the son of James Malia. I was told the family was originally from County Mayo Ireland and lived in PA. My grandfather had also had a brother named Thomas. I do know that my great grandmother has a set of triplets with only 1 surviving and at least 1 set of twin boys. I actually have a photo of the twins with the family which was believed to have been taken after their baptism. I don't know much more about the Malia family, my grandfather died prior to my parents even meeting.

I'm looking for information about Anthony Malia and Mary Cummings. More their parents then their children (i already have info on the children). I am a writer doing some research for a new project and I suspect Anthony Malia to be a descendent of the pirate Grace O'Malley, but I'm not completely sure, so I am looking for any information that may indicate Anthony Malia's lineage

Michael Malia & Nancy Knopsnider?

I've hit a dead end with my research and I was hoping someone might be able to help me out. My great grandfather was Michael Malia (or Maley) and his wife as Nancy Knopsnider (1898-????). I have the obituary for my grandfather, Henry William Maley (1914-1983) which lists his father as Michael. In the 1910 census, Nancy Knopsnider is still listed as unmarried in her father (George Washington Knopsnider's) home in Fayette Co., PA, but by 1920, still in the same household, her name has changed to Nancy Malia and she has a son, Michael Malia who I believe is actually my grandfather under a different name since he's born in the right year -- maybe, some of my aunts think that Henry may have had a brother, but they were unsure. Besides her son, there is no other Michael Malia in the household. I find an unmarried Mike Malia in the same county as a miner in a boarding house, born in the 1880s. This Mike Malia, however, is listed as immigrating from Croatia, mother and father from Croatia, unable to speak English, but able to read and write . . .

Nancy Malia shows up again in the 1930 census in Somerset Co, PA, in the Somerset County Home and Hospital for the Insane. I've been unable to find my grandfather in the 1930 census. I'd really like to find out what eventually happened to Nancy, but I know that's a long shot.

Which is where the trail goes cold, can anyone help me with this? This is really frustrating for me because it's my family name and it's proved the most difficult line of my genealogy to trace, ;-)

Thanks in advance,

Abby

My husband's great great grandparents were Michael and Hannah Griffin Malia (have also seen records with the spelling as Malay). They were both born in Ireland about 1842 and immigrated to Maine, USA about 1868. They had four sons. Lawrence and Michael A. were born in Dublin, Ireland and Patrick and John were born in Portland, Maine, USA. I have good information on their son Michael A. who was my husband's great granfather. I am looking for information on Michael and Hannah and their sons Lawrence, Patrick, and John as I can findvno records of them after 1883.

Re: Irish origin

The ancient Celts of the Venuttii tribe migrated from the Russian Steppes some 10,000 years ago. One group of the Malia's settled on the Isle of Crete, and history records that they built a huge palace there, in 1900 BCE, from which they ran a very prosperous shipping dynasty for 500 years. The palace was destroyed when the volcano on nearby centerini Island blew its stack. Some of the Malia's were on a ship some distance away and were able to find their way to what is now Ireland. Historians tell us that Malia is the first recorded family name in Irish history. That would have been about 3,500 years ago. By the way the Malia palace ruins sit next to Malia Bay on the Gulf of Malia near the Malia Cemetery next to the town of Malia. The British shipped the Malia Youth and girls to Pennsylvania in 1847 as slaves.//Arthur Malia

What type of connection between Stephen/Mary Marria? Did you mean beyond the early 1900's census?
If so, with ancestry having connections with street directories for 1940(not sure abt. Sharpsville) and now for some 1950 info(not sure) you should be able to start making possible connections.
I'd call the Sharpsville(or e-mail) HSoc.,asking if they have phone books, what years interested in, and go from there.then,of course, offer them $-some will take donations only. It won't hurt-you may end up talking to one of your relatives at SHS! Happy findings!

I actually subscribe (or donate if you will since I have such little time to go online to search) to Ancestry.com and I have the Family Tree Maker 2009 version. I've made many connections with family and traced back through most of my lineage with this one exception, which of course, is the most important to my at this time given my grandmother's age.

I wanted to thank you for the links. Just running through the Sharpsville Historical Society's page and scanning all 3000+ names on the 1900 Census, I found my gggrandparents listed as "Marry", not Marria. Family Tree Maker did not find this link due to the spelling variation. Through this census I was able to confirm that my gggrandmother was Mary Burke.

The Francis and Margaret McDowell you referenced are my great-grandparents. The house is still on 12th Street and I was able to visit it a few years ago.

At least now I know they were here in 1900. If I can find a connection beyond Stephen and Mary (Burke) Marria/Marry, I'll be thrilled.

Rebecca was born in October 1917 in Sharpsville, PA to Francis Simeon McDowell and Margaret Agnes Marria. I am searching for Margaret's parents and information on them and their ancestors. This is where I have a road block. I know her father's name was Stephen and I believe her mother's name was Mary, but the family knew her as "Ma".

The Stephen listed in your post (married to Ella) is Margaret's brother. If you have any information on their parents, I would appreciate whatever you're willing to share. My grandmother is 92 and would love to know about her family history.

I am Arthur Malia from Salt Lake City, Utah. Most of the Malia youth and girls were forced on to slave ships in 1847 and sold in the United States. Most of the girls ended up as household maids and the lads, including my Great Grandad (age 12) was put to work in the Coal mines around Scranton, Pennsylvania.
President Lincoln freed the slaves in 1860. The mine owners did not have to pay the slave owners any more. Now they had to pay the former slaves. Well here is what they did. They paid in company chits that could only be spent in the company store. The more coal you dug the more you were paid, and your costs at the company store were raised accordingly. Financial Slavery until the 1880's and the miners started unions/ Many left and came West to Park City, Utah to work for real wages at the Silver King Mine.

Thank you for your response. I just found it. The first occurence (working backwards) that I have of the name is my g-grandmother, Margaret Agnes Marria, who married Francis Simon McDowell and settled in Sharpsville. I have her parents' names as Stephen Francis Marria and (what I believe to be) Mary Ellen Burke. (There is another lady by the same name that was in Sharpsville/Sharon at the time but married to a different person.)

I haven't given up hope yet and have been scouring through the possible variations. I even asked my Irish priest if he's heard of Marria and it was not a common name to him. The search continues.

Unfortunately, when I started on this line, was told by several it would be difficult, due to name variations,BUT possible to find. It seems Malia,Melia in Ireland, then O'Malley in USA, BUT some kept Melia variations. Being yours Marria do you think l's transposed as r's in a census? where is the lst indication your name Marria, present or have you looked thru some census? What years are we talking about when your Winifred born and died? A genealogist will tell you, work backwards from you. Don't be discouraged, as all things possible, just takes concentration zeroing in on the family. You mentioned Sharon-Sharpsville,Pa? Why not start there-try historical society I mentioned in last post. Every census taker made mistakes, you have to allow for this, think as they did. Good Luck and don't give up! The challenge is the fun part in piecing the puzzle together and you'll get piece by piece.

Unfortunately, my Winifred was never married. So I'm still lost.

I talked with our Priest, who is from Ireland. He does not recall any Marria family but thinks the family name is most likely O'Malley and that it was changed. Sadly, this doesn't help me much either.

The plot thickens....

But I'm sure there's some connection between the O'Malley, Malia and Marria families in Sharon and Sharpsville, PA (right next to each other).
Husband's grandma was Anna Marie Melia, b. abt. 1872 in Co.Gallway,Ireland(per death certificate) Her parents were
John and Winifred O'Malley, who lived in Sharpsburg,(near Pgh) Pa. Per marriage application, she was widowed, and had a 5 yr.old son,John, when she married Frank Butler in 1890 in Pgh.,Pa. She had 5 children to Frank. She died Sept.1913. At end of her obituary in newspaper, it stated for Sharon,Pa. to copy. Not sure what that meant, but there were O'Malleys in Sharon, Pa. I haven't dug into her family much, due to name variations. We also did not know if Melia was her married name or maiden name. Sound familiar? contact me,please!

One of them may have been from Tourmakeady.

I believe the Marria name was changed, possibly from Malia or O'Malley.
I am also interested in the variations of the Malia spelling. My gggrandfather was Stephen Marria. His wife was Mary Ellen Burke (I believe). I have been unable to trace anything prior to him. They settled outside of Sharon, PA in Sharpsville and raised a family there (children: Phillip, Margaret Agnes, Stephen, Matthew, Thomas and Winifred). I recently discovered that Marria/Malia/O'Malley may have ties so I wanted to see if you recognized any of these names. Any information you can provide is appreciated.

Hello Jeff,
Just wondering if your still looking for info on Austin Malia. I received a letter from a gentleman in 1995 who wrote to tell me his grandfather's name was Austin & that the family originally came from a small island called Clare, near Clew Bay, off the west coast of Ireland. This family do come from Tyneside. Regards Christine.

Re: Malia - County Mayo, Ireland

Hello Angela,
I am searching Malia Ancestors of special interest is my great grandfather Michael Malia. Michael I believe was born in Westport Co Mayo 1860 his father is John Malia mother unknown. It is rumoured that his surname was originally O'Malley and that he changed it to Malia upon his arrival in England. In 1890 he married Mary Moran at St Bedes Chapel Westoe Lane South Shields. His marriage certificate tells me he was then aged 30 & a Widower. From his death cert I have been able to locate an address for both him and his son James in 1932 they along with other members of the family were living at 7 Hodgson St, Wallsend. This is how the family appear on the electoral roll Malia James, Malia Magnus, Malia Owen, Malia Mary Ann (she possibly could be the wife of James) Malia Michael(My Great Grandfather) Malia Ellen, Malia Margaret. I'd really Iike to track down this branch of the family as they may hold the key to tracing my Great Grandfathers family back to Ireland. If you were me where would you look next?. Regards Christine.
