Mallard family, AL

I believe Rev. James Harry Millard/Mellard/Mallard b. abt. 1778 in SC and living in Autauga Co (1840) Pike Co (1850) and then Macon Co where he died in 1855 to be the original slave holder of James Mallard (African American) who lived in Wilcox Co. in the 1860's, d. in Coy in 1919. Rev. James H's son J R G Millard/Mellard/Mallard however appears on the BLM as buying land in Wilcox Co in 1831 but I can't find evidence that either of them ever lived in Wilcox Co, but in the 1860 slave schedule there is a Daniel F Mellerd who held 11 slaves, one of which I believe to be James Mallard (b. abt 1842-1919). Daniel, also a minister is Jas R G Mellerd's son. On James Mallard's (African American) pension, under "were you a slave, name previous slave owners etc." he put "Mallard only". I'm not sure which of the two older Mallards were the original owner. It would appear Daniel was the last holder. If anyone has any further info, would love to hear from you, esp if you have a copy of either will that might name A.A. James. Rev. J H Mellerd died in 1855. Jas J R G Mellerd, his son, died in 1863. Not sure on Daniel. So A.A. James could have been passed from father to son to son again or grandfather to grandson too.

the Mallard Family.

I have just gotten back from Salt Lake City. FOR A Christmas tour where we had genealogist to help us research our family ties. We tried to find out who was Penelope Mallard's parents were. I need to go through my notes and I will get back to you.

My Mother was a Mallard. She was Georgia Hilda Mallard Hollingswort and she was from the line of Penelope. Other Mallard descendants have tried many times to locate Penelope Mallard mother and father with not luck.

I have a picture of Penelope. It is not a very good one.

I am trying to trace an ancestor called Joseph Mallard, who I believe may have come to England from France in the Early/Mid 1700's. The last record we have is his marriage certificate to an Ann Robins in Chapel Brampton, Northamptonshire circa 1746. Please help if you have any information

Mary M. Lena Briggs was a niece to Martha, Sarah and Angelina Mallard (daughter's of Adam & Susannah Mallard). The mystery has been Mary being on 1870 census and listed as "daughter" of Jane Mallard Ishmael (widowed), who had one known child, daughter, Sarah. Mary is one year older than Sarah, but is listed below her. I don't know if Jane was married to a Briggs, then Ishmael, but I doubt it. That only leaves Susan or Susannah A. Mallard. Mary was born in Brown Co., IL. I am thinking that Jane had taken Mary in and raised her, if perhaps Susannah died. Mary was born during the Civil War and her father may have been killed in
the war. All of that is speculation. Jane and Sarah lived with Mary Lena and her husband, Oliver N. Staton, in Johnson Co., MO according to the 1880 census. I am just hoping I can find answers to knock down this brick wall.

I am surprised that I sent the wrong address. I will check on it. Who was your second gr grandmother? In other words how do you descend from this family? Adam married Susannah after deserting a former wife, Elizabeth, in Thomasville, NC. I think everyone assumed he had died after disappearing. He just went several counties over and remarried. He had no children with his first wife. His sister, Penelope Mallard was my gr gr grandmother, born 1805 and died in 1888.
Barbara

Hi , and good luck on all of your searching , I don't have much to add as these line's are hard to trace the best I have done is to find my 3rd great grandfather Lawson Mallard's Rev War application for a pension and was surprised to find out that he was captured by the British and was imprisoned on a British Prisoner of War ship for 11 months in Charleston Harbor South Carolina . Betsy Susan , nothing , Keziah , never married , Sarah Ann , was shown to be married to a John Saw and William Harrison , with four children by him , Catherine Mallard , nothing , Peter Mallard , nothing , Martha Mallard , nothing , Shadrach , never married , Elizabeth the last child nothing . Sometimes people just died and were buried in the back yard , killed by Indians ect , so no record will ever be found on them . I haven't really been looking at the family for a while but if I find anything I'll post it . Jack

Jack, I would be very interested in getting the details on Martha, Betsey Susan, and Elizabeth Mallard since I only have firm information on Sarah Ann and Kesiah. Daniel's will only mentions Kesiah and his grandaughter Polly Harrison. Which of Daniel's daughters had Polly and did two of his daughters both marry Harrison men? Any more details and sources would be welcome. BTW, I am descended from both Daniel Q. and Lawson's lines.

I did extensive research on this family and followed them eventually to California. Unfortunately, I cannot put my hands on these papers right now. However, there is another researcher that has this information. You can contact her at Betty Richards@yahoo.com. I remember that at one point Mahala was in Oklahoma.

Barbara

Barbara,
Adam & Susannah Mallard had four daughters from the records I have found. Mahala Jane, b. 1843 married an Ishmael. She was widowed by 1870 and was living with her parents. She had one daughter, yet listed on the census below her known daughter, is Mary, listed as "daughter." Mary is older than Jane's daughter. Mary M. Lena Briggs was my great-grandmother and Mahala Jane and her daughter were living in Mary's household in 1880. Mary had married Oliver N. Staton and they lived in Johnson Co., MO in 1880. Mahala is identified as aunt. Three of the other Mallard sisters married: Martha Ann to a Duff, Angelina to a Tucker and Sarah A. to a Zumwalt. I cannot find what happened to Susan A. or Susannah Mallard and feel she is actually Mary's mother. I can't find a marriage cert. for a Briggs & Mallard and wonder if she was ever married and why the child was given the surname of Briggs? That is one of my brickwalls. Trying to find who Mary's parents were. After Mary passed away, Martha Duff took Mary's infant daughter and raised her as her own. Martha never had a child. Any help would be great.

Thank you for answering my query. I am certain that the Jefferson I am looking for was born in NC. There is a biographical sketch of his daughter Mary on the us genweb IL page that lists her father's birth as NC. Also, census forms taken later in this daughter's life also list her father's birthplace as NC.

That 1880 census has me puzzled. How many Jefferson Mallards who were blacksmiths could have been living in IL?? In 1860 he had a wife Frances and a 5 year old daughter Mary. By 1870 a Jefferson Mallard is living in a different county in IL, has the wife "Marry" and started the family you mentioned, but not a word about the daughter Mary. Mary would have been 15 but I can't find her on any census forms. Where did she go in 1870? She married a Frederick Hoffman in 1873 in Peoria Co, IL, and then she is easily found once again on census forms. I have to wonder if Jefferson's first wife died and he started a second family with "Marry", and his daughter Mary from the first marriage went to live with some relative or something.

This dead end, no pun intended, is driving me nuts. Again, thanks for your interest.

It has been a long time since I worked on this family. Adam's father was a relative of our family since his daughter Penelope was the mother of Robert Warwick Thomas Mallard, the founder of our branch of the family. Penelope was an independent woman who bought property and never married.

What questions do you have about the Mallard family in Illinois?

Barbara Wouters

On the lds.org family search site, there is a Jefferson V.Mallard, living in Brooklyn, Massac Co., IL. The 1880 census has NC as his place of birth, but I found another Jefferson James Mallard born 17 Apr 1826 in Walker, AL. This Jefferson's parents were Eldridge Thornton Mallard and Katherine Elizabeth Byler, both born in NC. Now, I wonder if the penmanship of the census taker could have meant to make a J, but it looked like a V? Jefferson V. was a blacksmith and was married to "Marry", born 1832 in AL. They had children, all born in IL: Charley A., 14,; Emma B.,11;Ann Netta,10,;Harrit E., 7 and a John Roberson, age 20, born in KY, who worked as a servant. I will do some more checking and see if I can find anything else.

I would be thrilled to discover American roots going back to the late 1600's!! I will keep your information and hope for the best.
I have one clue about later Mallards that moved to Illinois but the time line is off. I cannot put my hands on notes that I need. My great grandfather was Robert Mallard b. 1844 who was an illegitimate son of Penelope Mallard. Penelope's father and brother were both named Adam Mallard. Adam married an Elizabeth Bowen in April 1831 and they lived in Thomasville, NC. Adam left her and moved several counties over and married another woman named Susannah. Elizabeth never had children but this second wife had many. The whole family moved to Illinois and settled there. However, as I say, the time line is wrong for your Jefferson.

Peter Mallard born about 1689 came to the NC and VA. coast in the early 1700's and he and his children had many offspring. Part of the family went south into GA and part of them headed west across NC. Many stayed behind in Eastern NC. My Mallards are part of the families that came west. It is entirely possible that your Jefferson was born in NC but all I can say with any certainty is that he was not part of the Mallard families that I am familiar with.

However, there were numerous Mallards in early NC. At one time I looked into the records about them but there were so many and the marriages so complicated that I gave up on the project. I am not even certain which particular Mallard our family came from. Adam and his daughter Penelope are as much as I know.

I am sorry to be so little help but all I can say is that my family is not directly related to Jefferson.

Barbara Wouters

I am seeking information about the parentage of Jefferson Mallard who was born in North Carolina in 1822. He had a daughter Mary who was born in 1855, possibly in Kentucky, and by 1860 had moved to Illinois and is found on the Livingston County, IL census. Jefferson was a blacksmith and his wife on the 1860 census was Frances who was born in Tennessee. By the 1870 census there is no mention of a daughter Mary, but a Jefferson Mallard who had a wife named Mary and other children and was a blacksmith was found to be living in southern IL.

The daughter, Mary, born in 1855, married Frederick Hoffman in 1873 in Peoria, IL, and is my great grandmother.

I especially want to clarify where Jefferson Mallard was born in NC, his parentage and siblings, his wife's parentage and birthplace, and if Jefferson married twice and had two families.

I have reached a deadend in researching this branch of the family and would appreciate any help I can get. Thank you.
