John Maloy Malloy

John Oscar Malloy (my great grand-father) was born in 1896. His mother was Adeline Mischler, his father was John Oscar Malloy. We do not know if these two ever married but if they did it was very short lived as we find Adeline marrying when Jr was only 4 years old.
When my great grand-father grew he changed his name to Jack Malloy dropping his middle name all together. When he was asked about his father he told people nothing except that they should never ask again. We do have one picture of the father and dont know if he was ever married or had other children. This line is in the wisconsin area Adeline and her children were on an indian reservation, she was married to Ben Poirier and another man who's name escapes me right now.
Can anyone tell me anything about this Malloy line???

Hi, my family line was also from Bartholomew County. Very strong chance I can probably help you out with some info. I have a pretty good record going back to early 1800's. I am also aware of some of the family heading to CA back in the 1920's or 30's, I believe.
Send me a message if you would like more background.

Thanks,
DB Maloy

This is my family. They came to Telfair County, Ga. from Lumber Bridge, Robeson County, NC. I thought you might like to know that the family papers from NC are in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC-Chapel Hill. They include a land deed dated 1792 to Daniel Malloy (Hugh's father), Daniel's will, and some fascinating letters from Hugh's brother John, with information about Hugh's family, written from Telfair County in the 1840's. These are now digitized: http://www.lib.unc.edu/mss/inv/m/Malloy,Duncan.html. The original farm in NC is still owned by another branch of the Malloy family.

Many of the Maloys of Telfair County lived (and still live) in the Temperance area between Rhine and Jacksonville. Their descendants gather for a reunion at Sharon Baptist Church on the 4th Sunday of April each year.

What I don't know is where Hugh and Jeanette are buried. They are not at Sharon Church, where so many of the Maloys are. The census records suggest that Jeanette spent her later years in Pulaski County (what is now Dodge Co, about 5 miles west of Eastman), living with her unmarried son and near her two daughers (Margaret Bowen and Nancy Lowery).

My maiden name is Meloy. I have been researching the Meloy Genealogy for some time now. I kept hitting a road block around the 1750's. I just couldn't take my ancestors any further back. I have even seen a Meloy family Genealogy that goes back to France in the 1500 - my family line is NOT on this tree. I then realized that in the 1790 census, my gggggrandfather was listed as Thos MAloy. He spelled his last name with an A instead of an E. So now, I'm thinking I need to research the Maloy line. Can anybody shed any light on the Maloy family tree prior to 1750?
Thank you
Dawn Meloy Fox

I would love to compare notes.
I originally started doing research for my daughters' history project but, I became so interested in finding out more about my family that it was difficult not to dig around more.

My research hit a wall at Jacob Miller and Catherine Malloy.
I did discover that it looks like Lucious and Martha were cousins? Martha's parents were John Robert Mercer b. 3/27/1800, and Ann Montgomery Allen b. 5/20/1798

Jacob Miller was a private in the Revolutionary War.
Now, the Mercer/Messer clan goes back to 1545. (Robert Merser) The most interesting information I found on that family was the will of Christopher Mercer b.1612, he married Mary Simson (not a lot of info on her) but I do know they lived in Barbados, West Indies!

Hi, Cheryl,

I was just going over my old posts and came up on this one--after we've connected on ancestry.com.

To answer your question, Anna's husband was Stephen Maloy (or various other spellings). There is quite a story behind him, and I have had a hard time tracking him down, for what you will see are obvious reasons.

My husband's uncle once showed me a photocopy of a handwritten letter (my husband's aunt and uncle have the copy; the original was in the storage of another now-deceased aunt). The letter was from Stephen Maloy to his wife Anne, sent to her in County Cork, Ireland, from Liverpool. Dated 20 February, 1849. At the time of his letter, his daughter Catherine was about one year old.

Per the letter, Stephen's intent was to sail for Boston from Liverpool on the ship Anglo-Americano in the near future. The letter was brusque and weird, something along the lines of hi, I'm leaving for America (where I'll probably never see you again), love you forever...

The only thing we can figure is that he was being hunted by authorities and had to disappear quickly...perhaps Irish revolutionaries of the time, hdqtr'ed in Cork area? Or, I do know his bro-in-law, Wm Flanagan, was shipped to a penal colony in Australia before ending up in Chicago. Who knows!

According to this uncle, his wife got the letter and promptly arranged to head to America, herself, to track him down. Somehow, she heard that he had been shot in Boston, according to the family story. Somehow also, her infant daughter came later (w some unnamed other people), and was evidently reunited with her mother by the time they all showed up in Chicago, so there is a good 20-yr gap of time either filled with escapades...or not.

Keep in mind, that is the oral story, passed down to my husband's uncle, who was the keeper of all sorts of family documents and the one who passed this all along to me.

At any rate, one of those mysterious, untied threads to tuck away until more data shows up online.

I meant to add that there was a Michael Mulvehille/Mulvehill from Kerry (born about 1834) and his wife Mary Ann living a few houses away from Margaret Clayden nee Maloy in Millwall (England) in 1881. By 1891, Margaret had moved, but Michael and Mary Ann were again close neighbours. Possibly a hint that they were related?

Margaret Maloy

I am trying to find the name of the mother of Margaret Maloy, born in Ireland in about 1841, the daughter of Thomas Maloy. She went to England, and married Thomas Clayden in Essex in 1863. They settled in Poplar (The Isle of Dogs), and Margaret had a barber's shop in West Ferry Road. The marriage certificate shows her father, Thomas, as 'deceased farm labourer'.

I believe that she was related to my great-great grandmother, Mary Heffernan, nee Mulvihill, but I have been unable to establish the connection. My gran said that Margaret's mother was Mary's sister, but there is a lot of confusion about this, so I am not 100% sure that is right. (I have been told that Margaret and Mary were sisters, but that appears to be wrong.)

All I know about Mary Mulvihill is that she married John Heffernan in Ballylongford, County Kerry, in 1860. The marriage record contains no other information, which is disappointing (I have checked with the parish priest). Their daughter Catherine Bradley nee Heffernan was my great-grandma. Catherine went to England in the 1880s, and initially stayed with Margaret - who has always been referred to as 'Granny Clayden'.

I believe Mary Heffernan nee Mulvihill remained in the Listowel area.

If anyone has the name of Margaret Maloy's mother in their own records, it would help me solve a big mystery in my own research. I've also posted a query on the Mulvihill board.

Any information, or hints, would be much appreciated.
He was married to a Lillie Gosnell and died shortly after they were married. They did have one child an Edna Oma Maloy Williams Edwards. Lillie was actually pregnant when he died. I am unsure of his birth place, but I know that he died in present day Oklahoma. Any information would be helpful.
