Elizabeth Mathews, my Grandfather's sister, married "Burl" Malpass. That's what they called him.
Have been to the cemetery and have visited all their graves. I met Elizabeth when I was a little girl. Is there anyway you could send me that tag? Would be glad to send postage for it.

This won't help much, but it is of interest. I was walking on a sand bar on the Oconee River and found a "This Dog Belongs to" tag. The dog was named Major and the owner was J. B. Malpass of Sandersville Road, Milledgeville, Georgia. I found the name to have been president of the local Masonic Hall in 1938.

It does, but not in a way that's useful for you :-) All of the information I have is here in the US -- the farthest back I can go is Richard Malpas, born ca 1682. He moved to North America in 1700, arriving at the mouth of the James River 23 July 1700 on the ship Mary Ann (out of London).

Sorry

Rose Ann Malpass

I am trying to track down the parents of Jessie Maud Malpass Graham, who was born May 4 1883 in Belfast (Northern Ireland). On her birth record, her parents were given as Joseph Graham (deceased), prison warder, formerly of 17 Apsley Street, Belfast, and Rose Ann Graham, formerly Malpass. The birth at 17 Apsley Street was registered on May 24 1883 by Sarah Graham, who was present, and who seems to have been Joseph's mother.

There is no record of a marriage of a Rose Ann Malpass to a Joseph Graham in Belfast and thus I have no information as to her parentage or age. However, there is a record of a marriage in Dublin on May 13 1880 of a Rose Ann Graham formerly Malpass, widow, residence Arbor Hill, Farnboro, Hants, England, to John McCann, a serjeant in the Dublin Militia Artillery and a widower residing at Linen Hall, in Dublin. John McCann's father was Patrick McCann, a dairy proprietor, and Rose Ann's father was George Malpass, an ironmonger.

It seems unlikely, given the 1880 marriage date, that these two Rose Ann's are the same person. However, the surname Malpass and the name Rose Ann Malpass seems to be quite rare in Ireland, so I am pursuing all possibilities. Any help would be appreciated.

(I have the details of Jessie's subsequent marriage and family - I am just seeking to learn more about her own parentage.)

Kind regards,
Rosemary

First of all, I'm confused! My first reply was to a Sam Malpass and he and I shared William Ellis Malpass as a great grandfather, but I'm not sure who you are! That's OK, but if we're related, I'm interested.

Second, you are now WAY over my head in the family tree. You might try emailing my cousin Tad Malpass at the family company, the East Jordan Iron Works, ejiw.com I'm pretty sure you can email him that way. He is probably the most into the family tree stuff of anyone of my/his generation. If he doesn't know your answers, he probably knows who he can ask!

If you can't get ahold of him via the Iron Works, let me know.

It would be interesting if the two families were related, the Michigan branch and the N.C. branch. It's funny that the N.C. branch was into steel and the Michigan branch into iron, isn't it?

Thanks for your quick reply. I was wondering if further back if your branch is related to those Malpass families in NC. From my research most if not all southern Malpass/Malphurs/Molpus families descended from Richard Malpass of Virginia and North Carolina around 1690. Do you recall if your branch had roots there? The other possibilities are there was a Malpass family that landed in Philadelphia in the 1850s and another Malpass family came and settled in Michigan. Both came from straight from England. But it sounds like your family is older which leads me to believe it could be connected to the NC bunch.
We are related to Howard Malpass. My Dad says he had a summer place in N.C.

However, I think you are referring to the Malpass group that either was into steel manufacturing or ship building (or maybe both! I can't remember). Anyway...the William Ellis Malpass family, as far as my Dad knows, is not related to that branch of Malpass'.

Keep in touch!
Joy

Angel,
It sounds like you got your information from the James Malpass Book by Brinson that was published in the early 1960's. While Mr. Brinson is to be commended for gathering a lot of family data and for the later generations is for the most part accurate but he was not an professional genealogist. Unfortunately, his connection to England is way off. While I realize once these things get into print folks believe it to be Gospel no matter what you say otherwise. Hopefully you are open minded and not like that. The James Malpass of father Henry G. Malpass and others was born in 1775 and is listed in a old family bible with other siblings. This matches the 1850 Census that he was living with his son, Lovett Malpass. Documents show there was another, in fact three James Malpasses living about the same time. The James Malpass (born 1760) of the Revolution was the son of a Richard Malpass, not in your direct line. According to the evidence the Malpasses landed in Virginia late 1660s, moved to Suffolk,Virgina (then known as Nansemond County) and later to Chowan County, North Carolina (early 1770s) and then we think 3 brothers moved to New Hanover County in the mid 1750s. I have this documented by deeds, family bible and other documents from family members and professional genealogists. If you would like a copy of this I would gladly pass it on. Just send me an email address or mailing address for hard copies. Interesting enough after Mr. Brinson passed on, someone in his family actually added an addendum to his book in the State Library correcting some of these errors.

Dear Cuz,
My linage is Donald Philip Malpass>>Theodore Edward Malpass>>William Ellis Malpass>>>etc. etc.; same as yours! I'm looking at aFamily Tree chart that has names and dates (at least marriage dates) as far back as 1733. I would say for best family ancestry information, contact cousin Tad Malpass of the East Jordan Iron Works. He's probably the best in family history of my generation or could put you in contact with the right people. Happy Hunting!
Joy Malpass Overall

Can anyone help me? I'm relatively new to this so here goes, my malpas ancestors mainly came from Berkeley,Gloucestershire, My nana (mary Asenath Malpas)used to tell me the story of how our ancestor the marquess of malpas
back in (1200 something) had a duel with a Cholmondeley, seemingly duels back then were illegal, he killed the man and fled to France as a result, all his land and assets were given over to the Cholmondeley's,i find it very interesting as i'm trying to trace my family back i have only managed to go back as far as 1820 (Daniel Malpas or Malpass) so i've a long way to go, my nana when she was alive told me we were direct descendants of the marquess
many thanks

Hi Marion
Thanks for your reply and was pleased to hear there were other Francis and Samuel Malpas/Malpass born around that time.
Another lady has contacted me about the Staffordshire Samuel Malpas but we haven't been able to come up with a connection as that Samuel has a birth and corresponding death record.
I decided to bite the bullet and have a researcher in Shropshire check the Parish records for me to try to find my Francis and Samuel Malpas. They could well be connected somewhere to your George and Charlotte. Will let you know if anything comes to light.
Thankyou
Robyn
Hi there,
We have a Francis MALPASS born abt. 1826 in Bitterley, Shropshire to a Geo. & Charlotte MALPASS. Charlotte died in 1832 due to cholera epidemic in Kingswinford, Staffs.
There was also a Samuel MALPASS who was born in Kingswinford, probably the above Francis' brother - is it possible that this might your Francis' father?
If this is your man, you are probably related to Alan MORPHUS who has been working on this line for quite a few years. I think Alan can be contacted through this board.
If I find out anything else I will get back in touch with you.
Sincerely,
Marion

Can anyone help me find the birth/baptism of Francis Malpas. According to the 1851 census, he was born at Bitterley Shropshire around 1826.
In his later 1850 marriage certificate his father is recorded as Samuel Malpas, a joiner. No mother recorded.
Have found no death record to date. But as Francis was a private in the 1st Royal Dragoons stationed at Nottingham Barracks in 1851, he may have gone with the company when they left for Crimean War in 1854.
Any help with Francis Malpas and his ancestors would be appreciated.
His daughter Frances Elizabeth Malpas and her new husband, Richard Knight emigrated to NSW, Australia in 1882, living in Sydney then Moruya on south coast of NSW.

Hi
Do you have a record for Francis Malpas born Bitterley c.1826 according to 1851 England census?
His father was Samuel Malpas, a joiner (from Francis's 1850 marriage cert in Nottingham). No mother's name is recorded.
I guess Samuel Malpas was born in the 1790s or thereabouts.
Would love to be able to take the line back further.
Thanks
Wondering if my Francis Malpas born Bitterley, Shropshire c.1826 connects to your family?
He is listed in the 1851 census as a private in 1st Royal Dragoons based at Nottingham Barracks. He was formerly a carrier or currier born in Bitterley about 1826. Cannot find him in any further census records and no death has been found.
On marriage certificate of 1850 when Francis married Dinah Martin at parish of Radford, Nottingham his father was listed as Samuel Malpas, a joiner.
In 1851 Francis Malpas was in the 1st Royal Dragoons & possibly served in Crimean War 1854/1855. He may not have survived. Presently having that researched.
Immigration records do show that Francis Malpas was dead by 1882 when his daughter Frances Elizabeth Malpas and her husband Richard Knight emigrated to NSW, Australia aboard the "Nottingham".
Hope someone can help with birth details of Francis and more information on his ancestors, especially of Samuel Malpas who was in Bitterley at least in the 1820s. I have hit a brick wall.
