Have you found the names of Sarah's parents yet?

Ancestry.com has an old newspaper article about Gideon Dutcher and his children: THE COURIER, CHATHAM, NEW YORK , Thursday, March 9, 1939. You probably have this article already.

11mitchell@mchsi.com

Hi Betty,
I appreciate your reply, and the time and thought you put into trying to help!

There are a number of Gideon's descendants who are looking for his parents, and some of us have been collaborating for the last couple of years.

In answer to your questions, I have checked with the town clerk in Fall River for records, but they were only able to help me with the marriage record from 1838 and there were no parents listed for Gideon. I don't believe they found an unnamed Manchester male born in that 1816-1818 time frame either. I also checked out as many RI and MA families that I could, but although there were a couple possibilities (including the one you mention), I could find no verification or records of a birth for him at all or the family already had a son named Gideon who was definitely not him, or one born a few years after him so I had to rule out those families altogether since they wouldn't have named two living sons with the same name (hope that made sense to you or you know what I mean).

I found Gideon and Martha in the 1850 census, but the only parent living with them was Martha's mother Sarah Gray.

I did find out that Gideon was killed in the line of duty in 1852 while working as a constable for the Fall River police department. In fact he is going to be honored on May 5th, 2012, with a ceremony and a plaque! We have checked with the police department to see if they have any records since he was a constable, but they don't have anything other than what we already have.

I have found articles about his death in a few newspapers and publications, and even in a Fall River history book, but they never mention his parents, only his wife (Martha Gray Manchester), children, and mother-in-law (Sarah Gray).

I have traced Martha Gray Manchester through all the censuses until her death, and again, the only parent listed is her mother Sarah Gray, who lived with her until her death in her 90's. The 1860 census you mention is the right one, but Sarah Gray is incorrectly listed as Sarah G Manchester and so is not a parent of Gideon. I have also found Martha in city directories and I have her death record, which lists her as widow of Gideon and gives her parents' names.

Gideon and Martha are buried in North Burial Ground in Fall River but do not have markers. The records don't show his parents.

So that's where we are today, and unfortunately still without an answer. Ancestry is currently posting some new vital records for 315 towns (I think that's the number) in Massachusetts so it would be nice if something came out of that.

By the way, I'm also named Karen and live in CT, but I'm not the same Karen in CT that is related to Rhoda. I think I tried to help you out with Rhoda many years ago when you first responded to my post.

So please let me know if you think I've missed anything. By the way, do you have a subscription to Ancestry? If not, and if I can look anything up for you on Rhoda, etc., just let me know. As I said, they are currently posting some new vital records for a lot of towns. Unfortunately Fall River doesn't seem to be included, but Westport is.

Thanks again!

Karen

Hi again,

I'm just reading my posts from 9 yrs. ago. There is a researcher in CT where Rhoda MANCHESTER, b1800 Westport, MA, "IS" her ancestor. I don't know if she will respond to your question, but you can find her postings on the Lists and Boards for many years.

Since you mentioned a possibility of a RI family, have you checked out the Gideon in Warwick, RI, in 1820?

MANCHESTER, GIDEON (1820 U.S. Census)
RHODE ISLAND , KENT, WARWICK
Series: M33 Roll: 116 Page: 58

I cannot check the 1850 census.

The researcher, Karen, in CT has most of the information on Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER) (LAVARE) CLARK. She is descended from one of Rhoda's LAVARE sons. Rhoda had a younger LAVARE daughter, and then had a CLARK daughter. I am descended from Mary Anna CLARK who married John DEXTER and lived in his hometown in Killingly, CT. (I .hope. I am descended from them; they were the Adoptive parents of my grandmother and I hope they were her maternal grandparents.)

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(on Lists and Boards for 10 yrs.; now an Admin for 9 Lists and 3 Boards, including a Board for New-England-Research, and a Board for CAN-USA-Migration)

Hello,

I have a Mrs. Rhoda (MANCHESTER)(LAVARE) CLARK (1800 to 1880's) of Westport on my family-tree but cannot prove it.

There is a lot more information on-line at www.familysearch.org last year and again this year. I just searched for Gideon's name and didn't see it mentioned. But there were several men born in Fall River with "G" as a middle name (b~1815).

I searched again for a Gideon dying in MA in 1850's, and several Gideon's are mentioned, but mostly in Rhode Island. This marriage record was found:

Groom's Name: Gideon Manchester
Groom's Birth Date:
Groom's Birthplace:
Groom's Age:
Bride's Name: Martha Gray
Bride's Birth Date:
Bride's Birthplace:
Bride's Age:
Marriage Date: 15 Jul 1838
Marriage Place: Fall River, Bristol, Massachusetts, United States
Groom's Father's Name:
Groom's Mother's Name:
Bride's Father's Name:

IF you are pretty sure that your Gideon MANCHESTER was born in Fall River, and then married there, have you written to the Fall River City Hall and asked for look-ups?

http://www.fallriverma.org/index.php?option=com_content&...

I checked the WorldConnectProject and see several people researching a Gideon but not with the same .years.

I just checked census pages, and I see there were several MANCHESTER households in MA in 1820 but the majority were in Westport. And, in 1860, there were many families in Bristol County. Any possibility this is your Martha? She has a Sarah G. MANCHESTER, 82, living with her and her 3 kids:

MANCHESTER, MARTHA (1860 U.S. Census)
MASSACHUSETTS , BRISTOL, 2-WD FALL RVR
Age: 40, Female, Race: WHITE, Born: RI
Series: M653 Roll: 491 Page: 148

Also, have you posted your query on the MA and Bristol Co. Boards, and moreso the Lists, where there are researchers who have access to vital records?

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

(on Lists and Boards for 10 yrs.; now an Admin for 9 Lists and 3 Boards, including a List and Board for CAN-USA-Migration and a Board for New-England-Research )
(already a List for New-Eng-Gen)

Hi, Nice to hear from you! I think we are very closely related - Kenneth Manchester was my uncle and his father, George Dewey Manchester, was my grandfather. My mom is Alice, Kenny's sister. Is Lynne your mother? If I've got it all straight, I knew a couple of your aunts when I was a kid but don't know if I ever met your mother since we lived out of state.
Since I wrote this post years ago on Gideon Manchester (1817-1852), I did find all the info that he was a carpenter, butcher, and constable and was killed in the line of duty. Did you see where he is being honored by the Fall River Police Department on May 5th? I just got my invitation today.
Would love to hear from you again!
Karen

He is buried next to Elizabeth in Carpenter Cemetery, Pittstown. Due to the location of the gravestones, I can see how someone might mistake them for spouses.

Kathy Manchester Jones - ggggrandaughter of David and Elizabeth.

I just starting a family trre for my soon to be son in law family. They figure they are related since our family is related to the Wolcotts and Doanes and Hale. Could I get some names from the early Manchesters and see if they married into the Wolcott family or Doanes. Thanks for your help. The Wolcotts came over on the William and Mary and the Doanes came over on the Mayflower I think. Sometimes it's easier to work down to a tree then try to connect them. Thank you.

There is another Pine/Manchester marriage in my family. James Isaac Pine's widow, Emily Jane Rowland Pine (b. abt. 1838) married George N. Manchester when her first child was about 11. She subsequently had 2 children who died in infancy and then triplets, only one of whom survived until age 14. Bertha Pine, my great grandmother took the Manchester name, married William Tyler Hookey and had 4 children. George Manchester and William Hookey were business partners in New York City.

Did Iram Manchester have a grandson George N.?

Thanks for any further information.

Liza

And I too now live in Yorkshire.
Sadly, I have not yet made any connections to any Manchesters in Derbyshire though, on my mother's side (Shipman) I do have links around Tibshelf and Alfreton with family names Moakes, Blanksby, Cutts and many others.
No links yet in Warwickshire either.
My Manchesters mainly centre around Melton Mowbray in Leics.
with branches in Cambridge and Lincolnshire. Currently tracking links in Victoria State, Australia.

If you do find any connections in my areas please let me know and maybe we can swap info.
Keep searching.
Regards
Phil

So i'm Kia Daniel Manchester, Born to Dana Wayne Manchester (now changed legally to Daniel Wayne Manchester) and Karen Paula Manchester. I was born in 1984 in Nottingham and we lived just other side of Ilkeston in Shipley View Derbyshire. Now my parents have moved to yorkshire and i to Las Vegas Nevada in America. My Grandparents are kenneth and Josephene Manchester, my Uncles Shaun and Guy Manchester. Did some digging on heraldry websites and found out we came from the Warwickshire area of England back in the days of knights of old so if Manchesters out there know anyone in my line or are related themselves it would be great to hear from any of you, thanks

Mr Kia Manchester

Hi Elizabeth,

Happy New Year to you Elizabeth !
Thank you for your reply. The reason that I am looking for 'Manchesters' and Ledsons is that the children of Jane & Richard Manchester were brought up with my great g/dad, Walter Carr. Walter lives in the Manchester household as a lodger from 1881 onwards.

My problem is that I don't know why Walter Carr is with them. So I am desparately trying to find anyone who might know of any family background/history in my research on Walter. Walter was supposed to be born in Cartmel around 1875, his father was John Carr who was deceased when Walter married Jane Riding in 1910.
If you or your family know anything it would be really great to hear from you.
cheerio for now
Adele

Hi Matt,
I am a direct descendant of Joseph Thompson abt 1823. Joseph married an Eleanor Manchester in 1849. Her parents were Mark Manchester and Eleanor Tainsh (married 1816).
I believe Mark is the uncle of Alonzo Manchester
The Manchester family lived in the Deptford / Greenwich part of London/Kent.
I suspect we may be relatives, and I would like access to your Ancestry Tree please. My email address is donhrobertson@hotmail.com
Regards,
Don Robertson

Does anyone have any interest in the Manchester family in Melling area (nr Ormskirk, Lancashire. UK).

On the 1881 census, Richard Manchester is the head of the house and Jane (nee Halsall) is his wife. Over the years they have several children including Esther, Joseph, Willie and Sarah Ellen.

On 1911 Census, Jane has remarried and is Jane Andrews and lives with 2 of her children on Prescot Road, Melling.

Sarah Ellen marries into the Weaver Family and Joseph's daughter Elsie marries into the Ledson Family.

I would really love to hear from anyone on this family.
kind regards
Adele

Per the History of Newport County, Town of Tiverton # 63 on page 967, that the Honorable Andrew H Manchester's(4) b. 1820 d. 1908, married Elizabeth Gray, daughter os Asa Gray. Andrew is of John(3) 1790-1873 and Betsey C. Manchester, of John(2) of John(1). Question is: Does anyone have any info of the 2 early John's (1&2). I believe John (2) married Mary Fish of William & Priscilla Sherman. Also if you can tell me who John (1) parents were. Thank you.

I note with interest your mention of 'Charles Manchester':
I have not yet connected my MANCHESTER ancestry to any of the many Manchester db's online, but my Isaac MANCHESTER (b.10 Jul 1834/37 in RI) has a brother Charles MANCHESTER (b.1847 in RI) living together in 1880 Census in Vermilion Co., IL.
Do you see any possible way my Charles MANCHESTER could be in your ancestry of Charles MANCHESTER families?
I remain an un-connected MANCHESTER from RI with ancestry from England.
Marcia Smith

Hello,

My name is Kent Manchester and I am a decendent of Thomas Manchester who arrived in New Haven Plantation in 1638. He supposedly traveled to the new world with Yorkshire Puritan Rev. Exekial Rogers.

Further research identified our Thomas as a Servant to a Mr. Richard Perry. Perry came from a well to do merchant family in London. My theory is that Thomas most likely traveled from England to the New World as an indentured servant to Mr. Richard Perry. If this theory is correct then some how a Manchester family may have been tied in some way to the Perry enterprise. This would lead one to suspect that our Thomas may have come from London rather then Yorkshire.

How far back does your research go regarding the Manchester geneology near London? Is there some slim chance that you show a Thomas Manchester being born somewhere in the early 1600s?

Regards,

Kent Manchester
Clovis, Ca.

I'm still trying to sort out the London Manchesters and would appreciate any help/information. My current theory (which would connect (almost) all the Londaon Manchesters) is:
Charles Manchester m. Sarah Welch in 1783
Children of Charles and Sarah were Stephen (b. 1794), Edward (b. 1796) and George (b. 1797).
Stephen married Ellen ? and had children Walter (1821), Sarah (1823) and Stephen (1833).
Edward married Jane Heckmore and had children Mary Ann Harriet (1830), Edward John (1835) and Charles Edward (1838).
George married Ann Tanner and had children Charles (1825) and George (1827).

If anyone could help to prove (or discredit) this theory I would be very appreciative.

We also do not know where he went when he left Hoosick, NY. Elizabeth is buried in Hoosick, NY. She died at the age of 105.

This is indeed what my records say. John Manchester was the son of Thomas Manchester the immigrant, b. ca. 1620. So he is John (1).

Unfortunately, John was a favorite name in the family and each generation seemed to have one.

John Manchester b. ca. 1651 married Marie Grinnell, dau. of Mathew Grinnell and Rose French.

Their son, John, married Mary Nichols w. of Mathew (2) Grinnell.

The son of this John, named John b. 1722 married Anna Aylesworth.

John and Anna had a son Thomas who married Mary Matteson.

This is my line.
I just found your response about Thomas and Margaret Wood. My line is from his son, John. I've done some research on the Wood line and discovered why Margaret's father is not buried in the U.S. and died without a will.

Please contact me for details--it's too lengthy to write here.

I would be very interested in your material on the Wood family. I have traced them to south London trying to link their relationship to Thomas in the UK.

Also, did you know that the Woods had a daughter who was named Manchester Wood? She married a Jennings.

Looking forward to hearing from you,
Cordially,
Jeanette Manchester Harris

I note with great excitement and interest the recent flurry of treasured genealogy in RI! Any possibility that I may find a lead to my Isaac H. MANCHESTER--that I may descend from any of your ancestors --maybe from one of the sibs of your direct line ???
Please--I'm earnestly searching for a R.I. Connection for my Isaac H. MANCHESTER
B. 10 Jul 1834-38 in RI. [Birth place source from all census records]
M. 25 Dec 1861 in LaSalle Co., IL [Source marriage certificate]
Spouse Ellen L. THOMAS b.9 Apr 1844 in CT.
Isaac d. 27 Jan 1925 in Beadle Co., SD [‘age 90’ in Family Bible record]
In 1850 Census, I do find a 'Isaac Manchester' age 13 living with Constant BENE family.
Parents of Isaac = names are unknown but according to census reports they were both born in Rhode Island. With the name of 'Isaac' H. Manchester surely should connect to one of the great genealogy db's online, but I've not found it.
1900 census records Isaac ‘age 62’, Beadle Co., SD.
Death sources record death ‘age 91y 6m 17d, placing birth date 10 July 1834.
I have no evidence that any other family member followed Isaac when he left RI and moved to Illinois-- or if he resided somewhere in-between RI and IL? I have a land record dated Mar 2, 1868 in LaSalle County, IL. [+marriage certificate LaSalle Co., IL], but can't seem to connect back to RI.
I would be so pleased to hear from anyone with any likeness to my Isaac H. MANCHESTER family.
From my Family records (= heresy): Sailed to America early - maybe as early as 1620s.
There most certainly is a R.I. Connection out there somewhere. I’m missing 200 years of generations if arrived as early as the 1620’s!
With Great Appreciation,
Marcia S.
MANCHESTER Russell 1925-2011 b. Toledo, Ohio

Russell Manchester passed away at his home on March 28, 2011 after a 16 month struggle with esophageal cancer.

Mr. Manchester was born in 1925 in Toledo, Ohio. He attended DeVilbiss High School until he left to serve in the Eighth Tank Battalion of the Fourth Armored Division in General Patton's Third Army for the U.S. during WWII.

Mr. Manchester moved to Wauseon, Ohio in the mid-1950's. His decision to consolidate the operations of Sheridan Manufacturing Company in Wauseon led to Globe Weiss Office Products by Sheller-Globe Corporation and the UTA Door Panel Plant by United Technologies later being located in Wauseon. Mr. Manchester was involved in the start up of both those plants.
In addition to Sheridan Manufacturing Company, which he operated with his Father, Clyde Manchester, Mr. Manchester had several small business ventures, including Leatherwood, Inc., an investment company, Leatherwood Farms, and Russell Cattle Co.
He was part owner of the Wauseon Racquet Club and was an investor in major automotive fuel systems research and operations.
He was a 32 degree Mason and member of Zenobia Shrine, the Wauseon Elks, the American Legion and VFW. He was a Charter Member and past president of Wauseon Rotary Club, president of the Fulton County, Ohio Senior Citizens' Board of Directors, served as Chairman of the Wauseon Income Tax Board of Review, and director of the People's State Bank in Wauseon.
He was a self-taught and accomplished piano player and often entertained at meetings and social functions in the community, frequently donning humorous hats and other props as part of the act. He also played keyboard for the Abner Sweet Street Exhibition Band.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Manchester; his son, Wayne Manchester and daughter-in-law, Mary Lynn Manchester; his daughter, Janine Treu and son-in-law, Bryan Treu, and his three grandsons, Cooper, Tanner and Parker Treu; sister, Ruth Manchester preceded him.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at the Rotary Park Shelter at 600 Wood Street in Wauseon.
His family requests that any memorial donations be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in Wauseon, Ohio.

Before his death, Russ wrote the following humorous obituary: Despite a good start as an 8- 1/2 pound baby, Russ never quite lived up to expectations. A high school dropout during WWII, he served in the Army's rear echelon while others were winning the War. After the War, he launched his career as a bean counter, where he employed a unique method of trial and error arithmetic.
Having slept through 6th grade classes, it became Russ' lifelong wish to take a correspondence course in long division. Another dream was to become a male model. Local artistic photographer, Blaisdell Kull once spent a week trying to make a picture of Russ that was suitable for the newspaper, but the gleam from Russ' head prevented Mr. Kull from producing anything he would acknowledge as being his work. Russ also aspired to be a famous pianist. He obtained a candelabra and was often seen attired in costumes similar to the ones worn by Liberace. Unfortunately, Russ' fingers wouldn't move fast enough, and he often played in the cracks. Since he wanted to be an athlete, Russ spent considerable time on tennis courts, where he displayed exemplary tennis etiquette. Russ adopted a favorite phrase for his opponent when he played this game, which was, "Nice shot." It was his favorite phrase, because he had to use it so very often. An avid outdoor sportsman, he was once asked why he like to fish so much. He answered that he really just enjoyed riding in the boat, because he couldn't swim. In his typical self-deprecating manner, Russ chalked his many accomplishments up to "dumb luck," but his strong work ethic and notable good humor surely played a role.

Edgar-Grisier Funeral Home in Wauseon has been entrusted with arrangements.
Online condolences may be offered to the family at: www.grisierfh.com

Published in Toledo Blade on April 3, 2011 Share

I have extensive research on this family. Harriet Eliza Manchester m. Dillazon Starr Hurd. She is the sister of Frank and Charles Manchester, children of William Manchester and Elizabeth Britton. All born in Canada. Charles Tozer Manchester was President of Findlay College in Ohio. His brother Fred was the Financial Officer. Other siblings that I have information for are Joseph, Christian, Abraham, Mary Sophia, Esther, Stephen. According to other reports there were 13 children, all of them living long lives. So far I have not uncovered any more information regarding them.
Just recently someone passed on information for Elizabeth Britton. She was daughter of William Britton and Christian Hatfield. The name Christian shows up in succeeding generations so that seems like a good connection. Born 5 Jan 1789, died 8/20/1870. She was living with her son Joseph in Iowa. According to census she was born in Canada.

Thomas Manchester of New Haven Plantation

I write to offer a different perspective regarding Thomas Manchester's early history in New England.

Thomas first appears in New England's history in the New Haven Court Records in 1639 and 1640 for being drunk and verbally abusive to his master. Thomas is in fact a indentured servant and his Master is Richard Perry, one of the original planter's in New Haven. In "The Manchester Family of Rhode Island" by Alden and Rita C. Manchester, they write that Thomas was probably of the company of Yorkshire settlers who had come to America with Ezekiel Rogers in 1638.

If Thomas was an indentured servant to Mr. Perry then Thomas may have come with Perry from England. He might have indentured himself to a sea captain and Richard Perry purchased the indenture agreement from the Captain on the ships arrival in what was likely Boston. I mention this because per "The Pioneers of Ma. (1620-1650) by C.H. Pope, in 1636 Richard Perry was a resident and possibly a property owner in Charlestown, Massachusetts. Perry, as one of the New Haven Original Planters, must have sailed in the Spring of 1638 with Eaton & Davenport to New Haven. Ezekiel Rogers does not arrive in Boston until the Autumn of 1638 after Perry sails from Boston to New Haven. How could Thomas possibly become indentured to Mr. Perry if he arrived with Rogers?

It might be suggested that Thomas may have come on his own or with Perry as early as 1636. There is no exact record of how many years an indenturement lasted but it is suggested that 5 to 7 years was common during this period. If Thomas was indentured to Perry in the early to mid 1630s then he might have been free as early as 1641. This would tie in with his appearing in Portsmouth records as on 25 Feb., 1642 he is appointed to serve on the next jury.

I wondered how Thomas, a poor but freed indentured servant, would afford transport to Portsmouth, Rhode Island? An explanation may come from Richard B. Morris's, "Government and Labor in Early America. Richard writes, "Under the Biblical law the servant was to serve six years and in the seventh go out free for nothing, but the master was enjoined to provide liberally for his servant at the end of his term. The Massachusetts code provided that all servants that have served diligently and faithfully to be benefit of their Masters Seven years shall not be sent away emptie."

Is it possible that Perry gave Thomas Manchester some small payment and Thomas used that money to book passage to Rhode Island and possibly buy land in Portsmouth? I ask myself why Thomas would choose to go to Portsmouth, Rhode Island? It appears from the court records that Thomas was not exactly a Puritan at heart. In the 1640s Rhode Island's offer of political and religious freedom may have been the draw for Thomas.

Certainly there are some facts and speculation woven in to this new tale of Thomas Manchester's arrival in America. We probable will never really know how and when Thomas really arrived in America. All we do know for sure is that he did arrive.

Kent Manchester
Clovis, Ca.
