I would like to find some info about Ellen Margaret Elizabeth Mann. She first appreared on 1871 census with her grandparents (my g g grandpaents) in Romford, Essex aged 4[b 1867]place of birth given as E India, no parents names. She is on 1881 census as a boarder age 14 with a music master, William Hills and family in Hackney, London. Again place of birth given as India, no parents names given. My g g grandparents, William & Mary Elizabeth Mann had 4 sons. The eldest William is my g grandfather, the youngest Charles Robert b 1856 would have been too young to be Ellen's father. That leaves Henry b 1837c or Alfred John b 1839c. I don't know what happened to either one of them. I think Henry may have joined army, and perhaps went to India as he seems to be? on 1851 Scotland census as a boy-servant in the household of an army surgeon,[Joshua Paynter). Has anyone any info or ideas? I cant find anything else about her after 1881 census

These are a couple of wild guesses:

Take a look at this death record from the Times of India in 1867 http://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/aps_detail.php?id=838213

I wonder if this is your Ellen's mother. She's also named Ellen Margaret Mann and was married to "H. Mann". Perhaps she died in childbirth, which might also explain why the child was shipped back to England at such a young age.

This is a marriage record for a Henry Mann and Ellen M Whealon in 1866
http://search.fibis.org/frontis/bin/aps_detail.php?id=365507

Worth a look!

Jim in Norfolk

Fergus Mann

In 1795 Fergus Mann sold a piece of property in Prince Edward County, VA, to William Gordon. In 1846 one of William's sons sued the heirs of both William and Fergus, presumably to clear the title. I don't think the deed had been recorded. A copy of the deed is included with the chancery court record. It lists the heirs of Fergus Mann including, in some cases, spouses. The court case is digitized and available on Library of Virginia website. I'd be happy to direct anyone to it, or try to send a copy of the deed as an attachment to e-mail or via USPS.

According to my father, he was of "irish descent". I have been hoping and hoping for some info!

Here is the obit for my great great grandfather Christopher -- Bro. Christopher Mann was born on the 17th of April, 1843, in Springfield, Ohio; moved to Indiana with his parents when he was yet a boy; was married to Sister Magdalena Kreider on the 31st of Dec., 1868. This union was blessed with seven sons and five daughters, of whom two sons and one daughter preceded him. He united with the Mennonite church in 1876. In November, 1893, he had a stroke of paralysis from which he never fully recovered, although he was still able to be about most of the time. Nov. 17, 1899 he had another stroke of paralysis which rendered him completely helpless in body and mind. His faithful companion, assisted by her children watched constantly by his bedside and tenderly cared for him during the long months that followed. On the 18th of September, 1901, he quietly fell into that sleep that knows no waking on earth, but from which those who with him have chosen the good part in health and strength will awake in glory in everlasting health and strength. The funeral was held from late residence, 920 Hubbard St., Elkhart, Ind., from which the remains were taken to the Olive M.H. for interment. A large concourse of sympathizing friends assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to the dead and to show their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved sister and her five sons, four daughters and four grandchildren. Funeral services at the house by J.S. Hartzler and J.F. Funk and at the M.H. by Noah Metzler and Henry Weldy. Texts, "Now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace for mine eyes have seen thy salvation." May God in his infinite mercy and love, comfort the bereaved companion and children and reward them for their labor of love, and grant them a happy reunion on the shores of everlasting bliss.

Here is the obit for Eli's son John --- On the 8th of Sept., near Jamestown, Elkhart Co., Ind., suddenly, John Mann, aged 40 years, 2 months and 19 days. He was apparently in usual health, and while he was at the dinner table, partaking his meal, he suddenly dropped in his chair and expired in a few minutes. Though in mind a child, and subject to many trials and difficulties, he leaves a vacant place in the family, which his aged mother will feel more keenly than any other. He was buried at Shaum's Meeting-house on the 10th. Services by Henry Shaum and John F. Funk from Matt. 25:13.

Susan - I found this obit on Jacob. Is this your g-grandfather? ---- On the 29th of August, in Elkhart Co., Ind., of dropsy and heart failure, Jacob Mann, aged 54 Y., 8 M., 10 D. He was born in Richland Co., Ohio, May 19, 1851, and later removed with his parents to Elkhart Co., Ind. When two years of age he fell into a tub or kettle of hot soap, and in consequence became totally blind. He was married and a wife and two sons and twos daughters, with one sister and two brothers, survive him. His later years were spent in different towns and cities as an "organ-grinder," but his residence was in Elkhart, Ind. On account of his not being able to see and other causes his life was real sad and his lot a hard one, but he had many friends, who sympathized with him and also helped him. Through the cold and storms of winter and through the heat and rains of summer he stood on the street corners trying to interest the people in the music and thus help him maintain himself. His remains were buried near the Olive M. H. on Friday, Sept. 1st. Services were conducted by John F. Funk from Matt. 25:46. Peace to his ashes, and may the Lord bless and comfort the surviving family and friends.

Levi's father was Christopher Mann, and Levi's grandfather was Eli Mann (married to Margaret). Levi married Delilah Bontrager (b. 1876 d. circa 1960s). Levi had two sone Lester and Clifford Mann. Lester was my grandfather. Lester married Sara Leona Miller, and they had four boys, Lester, Dean, Derald and David. Dean is my father. I would love to know more about Eli and his ancestors.
Thanks for contacting me Heidi. I would also like to know if Hugh Mann is connected to the Mann tree I'm working on. It certainly seems a coincidence that the witness was an Amey Mann, but then the person recording the event may have always spelt it that way. That Hugh, as a relative, sounds very promising. You say his father was Henry - my Richard Mann and Amey Tilsley had a son, grandson and gt grandson named Henry. Your Hugh and my Richard could very well have been brothers but I don't quite know how to prove it. Sorry I can't be more help.

Hi Im researching the Mann family in my tree and i spotted your message. Im sorry i dont have any imformation about Richard Mann but I think there could be a connection between him and My Hugh Mann in some way. Hugh married in 1787 in Shoreditch but had an Amey Mann as witness. I remember thinking it was a unusual spelling of the name and searching for her. Although my Hugh was married three times that i know of the only reference to his father is on his last marriage record. He's listed as Henry Mann and i have no record of brothers or sisters. Could your richard possibly have the same Henry as father? He was a shoemaker but thats all i know of him.

Regards,
Heidi.
My great grandfather was born in Appomattox in 1892. His name was Hallie. We know very little about him. His mother died when he was 2 or 3. I do not know if his father dies as well or what happened from there, but he ended up being sent to live with a Thomas Main and his wife Jane. I have had a DNA test done which links my family up with others with the Mann surname. Any information might help.

Hi Carol,

Many thanks for replying to my message. Middlesex was an old county of North and West London, absorbed into Greater London in 1965, whereas Sussex is an old English County in the South of England, towards the south coast. There is, therefore, some distance between the two which makes any connection of my William and Martha with the Sussex couple in the 1770's somewhat unlikely (although not completely impossible). My William and Martha did have a son William, born in 1776 in Marylebone, Middlesex, but I have no knowledge of Edward, Mary or Edwin in the family.

Best regards,

Alan

You mention the Ferguson family in your posting about Richard Herbert Mann. It appears to me that Richard Herbert Mann was son of Marinda Gordon (married Joel Mann in 1834 in Campbell Co VA). She can be seen in 1850 and 1860 census as Joel's wife, then as a single head of household in 1870. In 1880 she was in household of her son, Charles R Mann and his wife Martha J (age 28). It seems in 1900 Charles R Mann has died and his widow was now listed as Nett J Mann, age 48, with mother-in-law Marinda Mann age 88. In the 1920 census of Appomattox I see Nettie J Mann, age 67, is a household of her daughter, Mrs Samuel L Ferguson. Do you know if her husband, Samuel L Ferguson, b c1870, descended from the Ferguson family that was intermarried with the Mann family many decades before? Thanks, -Will Hendricks willhendricks@comcast.net

Thank you for your informative posting about the relationship of Richard Herbert Mann and Joel (jr) and Richard Mann. I am part of a group seeking to prove the ancestry of Field Mann who appears to be a brother of your Richard, with them having a third brother Joel (sr). I concur with other researchers they appear likely to descend from JOHN MANN whose estate is referenced in Prince Edward Co VA Will Book 5, pages 4-5, dated 11 March 1815. Do you have a copy of that document to share? It will be autumn 2012 before I can do research at LibVA and hope to find a copy sooner. Thanks for any assistance or advice on this subject. You may know that some postings on-line have attributed your great-grandfather Joel to men other than Richard. I am delighted to have your "first hand" version. Additionally, you mention the Ferguson family. Will continue in a 2nd posting. My email is: willhendricks@comcast.net

Attn: EAbate7600--Eileen

I am also descended from Benjamin Mann and Mildred Timberlake. Would you please share the copies of Benjamin's Revolutionary War pension application, and the ancestral line going through Levi Mann and Anna Mann. Could you please share this information with me? As well as sharing copies of Benjamin's papers witnessed by Philip Timberlake and David Mann?
Thank you so much!

Re: Mann families of Ecklesheim, Rheinhessen, Darmstadt, Germany

Hi! I noticed your post and was fascinated by the depth of records you have pertaining to the Mann's of Ecklesheim, Rheinhessen, Darmstadt, etc. I was wondering about the lineage of my maternal family and what you might be able to help me with. My great-great grandmother was Mary Mann, her father's name was George S. Mann, and his father's name was Levi T. Mann. All of whom were born and lived their lives in the United States (Delaware). However, I have been told that Levi's family were immigrant's from Europe and would like to learn more. He was born around 1828-1830, so his father who may have been born in US was likely born in the early 1800's. I hope this does not cause any confusion. Great work with you're lineage.

Jeremy Edler
