Greetings. I see it's been since 1999 that anyone posted here. I hope all are still curious about their Manning roots as I am. I discovered a YDNA 37 marker match to Glenn Sherwood Manning. I was conceived in Missouri though and he is from Virginia. I was hoping to find out more about Leon Manning or those that descend from Missouri

James Manning of Rhode Island

Trying to find any information on James Manning born around 1830 in Ireland and lived in Rhode Island in the late 1800s. He married Elizabeth (have guessed on a last name of Reagan but I dont know that I have that correctly). They had a daughter Catherine who is my great grandmother. I have a few items of information I have pieced together from ancestry but can't seem to find James and Elizabeth before 1910 census.

Hi Bryan! Thanks for the help! Sorry about the ~. In the US, it means "approximately". The more I look into the Manning family the more convinced I am that Grapen and Loura/Laura were the wrong names. The relatives usually provided the info for the death certificates and the names were probably guesses or something they've heard. I'm now convinced that William Manning was Joseph's father as the family names and years match what I've got. I have July 1832 as Joseph's birth month and year though I'm not sure why the gap between birth and christening in 1833. The Joseph listed in the 1861 census is my great-grandfather as I have a Walter James Manning born 3 March 1857 and an Anna ("Annie") Manning born 22 March 1860 in our family records. Not sure where the Howard side comes in (must be on Elizabeth's side. It makes sense though since one son was named William Howard Manning (after both grandparents maybe?); Elizabeth's (Joseph's wife)full name was Elizabeth Pomfret Baker. What's interesting is that Joseph later married in 1889 (Elizabeth died in 1884 according to family records) a Mary Baker, who was born in May 1842 in England and emigrated to the US in 1873 according to census records. I wondered if Mary was related to Elizabeth in some way (like a sister or cousin who came to help with the kids after Elizabeth died). There wasn't much about Mary though in our records other than her first showing up in the 1900 census records. Thanks again for the help! Now I just need to track down a birth record for my great-grandfather Albert Edwin (b 22 June 1864). Family tree filled in by others say he was born in London but not sure as Barley, etc. are fairly close. Thanks again for the help! -Rebecca

Hi Carol! Thank you for all of the help and information!!! To think all I first started out with a family note saying that my great-grandfather's (Albert Edwin) parents were named Mary and Joseph. We always thought it was nice because of the biblical reference. The last names were common though so it was hard to track down the proper records.Having George listed as Joseph's brother with a matching birth year also confirms that George followed his brother Joseph to the US to the same small town in Ohio. The family first names also repeat in future generations. Now to find out if John from the 1841 census was really William's father (age would make it seem so). Thanks so much! - Rebecca

So if it is the right death certificate for you have you picked up the correct family in the censuses in England?

groom's name: William Manning bride's name: Mary Woodcock marriage date: 23 Oct 1831 marriage place: Barley,Hertford,England indexing project (batch) number: M07212-2

1861 census Barley Joseph (Bricklayer) is 27 married to Elizabeth with Children Walter J age 4 and Annie age 1. With them is Elizabeth HOWARD Grandma Widow age 78, widow of a carpenter.

In 1881 Joseph's father William seems to be in the Royston Union Workhouse.

Bryan
PS the old chap in 1841 may be williams father.

RC,
FreeBMD has his first marriage in the last quarter of 1853 - that means it is anytime in October November December 1853. You should not say ~31 Dec as that is misleading. In fact I do not know what you mean by "~" .

Marriages Dec qtr 1853
Baker Elizabeth Pomfret Royston 3a 257
Hawkes Anna Royston 3a 257
Howard Joseph Royston 3a 257
Manning Joseph Royston 3a 257
Barley is within the Royston registration district.

FreeBMD has the civil registrations from when they started in July 1837 up to around 1940/50ish.
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

You can order certificates from here for £9.25 and they will arrive in about a week:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

the marriage certifcate will give his fathers name and occupation. I've never heard of anyone called Grapen. Maybe it is Graham or George.

Are you sure the man you want was the one born in Barley, Herfordshire? There were also two other Joseph MANNINGS born in 1832.

The 1841 census for Smith End, Barley has Joseph MANNING age 9. If the adults in the house are his parents then there is a problem as they are called William (age 30+) and Mary (age 25+).
I cannot find any Joseph whose parents appear to be G* amd Laura in 1841.

The 1851 census confirms that the family in Barley has William and Mary as parents.

Familysearch has the baptism of Joseph as 21 Apr 1833. Rather a long time after you say he was born c. 1st July 1832. Where did that date come from?

name: Joseph Manning gender: Male baptism/christening date: 21 Apr 1833 baptism/christening place: Barley, Hertford, England father's name: William Manning mother's name: Mary indexing project (batch) number:

Bryan
PS
In 1851 there was another son on the next sheet - William MANNING age 8 born in Barley

He is listed in the 1841 England & Wales census at Age 9 in Barley, Hertfordshire though I don't know who with and who his parents were. His death certificate in Feb. 1914 in Camden, Ohio listed a Grapen Manning and Loura Baker as parents but no luck finding them. He married Elizabeth Pomfret BAKER (b. 1836 Barley; daughter of John BAKER and Ann Unknown) ~31 December 1853 in Barley, Hertfordshire, England. Children born in England were: 1)Arthur Manning (b. 1855 Barley, d. 1856 Barley); 2) Walter James (b. 1857 Barley, christened Barkway, d. 1930 Crichton, AL, USA); 3) Anna "Annie" (b. 1860 Barley); 4) Charles (b. 1862 Tottenham); 5) Albert Edwin (b. 1864 Tottenham, d. 1935 Wellington, Ohio, USA). Joseph and his family are listed in the April 1871 census in Tottenham but had moved to Lorain County, Ohio and were having their 6th child (Joseph Jr.) in 1872. Five more children (George, Augustus, William Howard, Frederick Washington, and De Etta) would follow. Interested in who Joseph's parents and siblings are and if he followed them or they followed him to Ohio. He was a farmer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a Thomas Manning in Ohio born in Ireland. This Thomas evidently married Bridget Finnegan. This info is per the death certificate of my great grandmother Anna Marie (Manning) Weber signed by daughter Thelma Higgins, so there is always the chance of errors in recollection of names, such as Finnegan for Flaherty. Anna was born in 1870 (all census info indicates birth in Ohio). Her sisters were Margaret and Rose. Anna married Matthew J. Weber. Margaret married a Mr. Dollard, maybe John Dollard. Rose married Peter J. Smith.

I have been looking for definite info on Anna's parents. Does any of this sound familiar? I tried your email and it bounced back as undeliverable.

[Follow-up April 20, 2012 - Thomas Manning married Mary Ann Finnegan. Her name is incorrectly shown as Bridget on her daughter's, Anna Marie (Manning) Weber's, death certificate.]

Sorry. I don't have any info on Terry. I was just wondering about him myself. He was my brother's best friend back in Fair Haven, NJ in the 1960s. I played football with Terry. He was a force of nature! I remember him picking up our fullback and dumping him on his back like a sack of potatoes. I think he may have made it into the NFL briefly but I'm not sure. Good luck in your quest and say hello if you ever find him.

I am seeking information on a Jackson Manning who was born in Norfolk, Va. in 1832. In the 1850 census he and his sister Martha were living with Little family in Norfolk. Jackson moved to Tennessee after the Civil War. Does anyone know who his parents were?

Yes, I believe my great aunt Alma, Edgar's sister has spoken of Gordon. Of course she passed 10-12 years back now. I have a few photos and a little information about the early family. Thx Leslie.

Hello, Teressa! Great to hear from you. My husband's grandfather was Robert Gordon Manning, a son of Walter&Laura's son Edgar Manning. I've been hoping to find out more about Walter and Laura, and the family history back beyond them. Hope to hear from you soon.
Leslie :)
