Hi,

Francis Penn's wife, Julia Catherine Smith, would have been my mother's first cousin. Julia's mother was Catherine Keeffe Kennedy, and she was my mother's grandmother. Her son was my mother's father. All I really know about her is what my mother told me, and what I've gleaned online. Feel free to look at my tree. The Kennedys, the Smiths and the Mantons all lived around The Amboys and Keyport, NJ.

Patty

Hello Carl,

I have been working on the surname Manton for a long time, especially in Tipperary Co. I read from your message that you have a gg grandfather named William Manton born in 1831. Do you happen to know anymore specific information on William such as which county in Ireland he came from, or perhaps his parent's names? Do you happen to know the full name of his wife Catherine? Were they married in Ireland before moving to Manchester?

Regards,
Mary Mamalakis

Hi Jodie,

I have read the info posted on various sites - do you know where the story of the Berghofer alias came from? Is it documented? Have you compared photos of the two?

The story about the Astor family is interesting - it is biologically impossible for John Jacob Astor (died Titanic) to be WM's grandfather. Did you ever get any sensible information from this person?

Do you have the marriage cert for WM and his children's birth certs? Is his date and place of birth consistant on each, and with his service record? Why did he go to Ravenswood in Queensland after he was married? Mining?

Sorry about all the questions!

Debra

I'm not sure how far your research goes but there is an entry in Syd Morning Herald about 1929 [I think] where Edward William Cook, father of Violet Sylvia Manton, [wife of Willoughby] has died at "Manto" Como Cres Como. Sydney.
There is another entry in SMH which is illegible but appears to refer to a son of Violet who is also Willoughby.

There appears to be no such person as Willoughby Manton prior to his marriage and war records, then I stumbled across the Berghofer web site that says he used that name in prison! No idea on how to figure it out and needless to say some of the family are very upset at the mention. Any ideas??

Hi, I have a copy of the Sydney morning Herald dated Friday 31 March 1893 which states Judge Dockerof Forbes finds Henry James Gibb and William Andrew Berghoffer guilty of stealing 41 head of cattle from Carrowobbity Station. Sentenced to four years gaol. Gibb was the eldest Australian killed in action in WW! and had previously served with British South Africa Police in Rhodesia 1896-7.
Bruce.

William Manton b. 1801 Daventry, Northamptonshire
2. Robert Manton b. 24 Jul 1805 Daventry, Northamptonshire

There is a record of Sarah Wilson getting married in 13 Oct 1795 in Alcombury-cum-Weston, Huntingdonshire but it does not show the name of the husband. This would fit the timing for a marriage to Joseph and is not that far away from Daventry.

Sarah died sometime between Robert's birth and Joseph's marriage to Millicent Mawby on 26 Jan 1806.

Joseph Manton and Millicent Mawby's children
1.
Grandaughter of Graham Ashley Leonard Manton adopted son of Marcus Dyce Manton. Marcus married my great grandmother Ruby Marguerite around 1910 and adopted her two sons Graham and Martin (toby). Grandpa wrote quite a bit about Marcus in his memoirs.
My Grandpa was also a pilot in the RAF (Group Captain G.A.L. Manton) and fought during the Battle of Britian. He got much of his passion for flying from Marcus.
Grandpa moved to Australia in 1960 with my father and uncle.

Hi Brenda,
Yep thats them all right, oddly Charlotte (Ellen) Manton went under the name Clarice (fashion I guess) and Emily Manton went by her middle name, Victoria. All of these would be dead by now, but my grandfather had two half sisters, Norma Brooks, from his fathers marraige and Cynthia Angell, from his mothers marraige, and it is feasible (if somewhat unlikely) that they may still be alive. The problem with all women is that they have an annoying habit of getting married and changing their last name :-)

Your Grandfather seems to have three names with Manton in the middle. Does that mean that was his mother's last name or his father's.
If you look up Ancestry.com you can see some information for free. There are some Manton's from Ireland listed, but no Henry or Harry. Do you know when he was born? Did you go by another name or a second name?
Was he born in Ireland or only moved there?

Yes, some of the Manton's went to Ireland and I heard then some went to South Africa. I think most are distant relatives to the Northampton families. The one's in Ireland originally lived in England.
Have you checked all the "boards". There were some notes about the Irish branch of the Mantons. They went to Tipperary, I think.
Do you speak English well? I am a teacher of foreign students. I also know some Spanish but am not fluent.
I have been to Mexico many times and would love to visit South America sometime.

I will see what I can find for you.

There are many Manton's from England and some moved to the United States of America, one to Australia and one family to Ireland.

Do you have any information about your family?
Hi. I realize your note was written some time ago, but I thought I would respond anyway.
I am Valerie Manton, my father was Henri Louis Manton, his father Richard John Manton, his father John Richard Manton married to Emma Nichols. Richard had about 7 brothers and sisters. George, Nathan, Harry, Emma, Amelia, and Daisy. They were all from Northampton, England.
My grandfather emmigrated in the early 1900's and the remainder of the family remained in England. There is a town of Manton close to Northampton and there was a Lord Manton. He later sold his title, I quess during hard times. I think the family is also related to Joseph Manton, the inventor of the percussion cap gun. He's listed in "Who, Who".
There was also a Thomas Manton in 1670 who was the archbishop to the King of England.
I have alot of info if you are still interested.
