1/22/2008 - James H. Maple, 74, of 3930 S.
Clifford Ave., Bemus Point, N.Y.,
died at 5:02 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 19, 2008),
in WCA Hospital. A native of California, Pa.,
he was born May 7, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pa.,
a son of the late Thomas Maple and Blanche Adamson Maple Williams. He was a 1951 graduate of California Community High School and attended Purdue University from 1951-1954 until he was drafted into the US Army serving from 1954-1955. He received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from California State Teachers College,
a master’s degree in mathematics
from Bowling Green University
and continued his education taking graduate courses in computer science at Penn State University. He also did graduate work at Kent State University and the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to moving to Bemus Point in 1996,
he worked as a math teacher in Lorain, Ohio, Norwalk, Conn., and Euclid, Ohio before being hired by Indiana State Teachers College, now Indiana University of Pennsylvania, in 1964. He was a faculty member of the Mathematics Department until 1971 when he co-founded the Computer Science Department; he remained there until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of Ingjald Lodge #65 IOV, AMVETS, and Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed woodworking, bird watching,
time spent volunteering at the
Chautauqua County Humane Society,
and spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife the former
Nancy Underwood, whom he married Jan. 31, 1959;
a daughter, Kathy Maple of Indiana, Pa.;
a son, James E. Maple and wife Irene of Purcellville, Va., two grandsons: James A. Maple,
serving in the US Air Force,
and Justin Maple of Indiana, PA;
two brothers: Robert Williams of Schenectady, N.Y.
and Lewis Williams of Barnesville, Pa.;
a sister, Marion Kozlowski of Orlando, Fla.;
and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, a brother,
Thomas Maple,
preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held in the spring at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pa., at a date and time to be announced. Memorials may be made to
