mara or o'mara in wales anyone?

Hi, seeking any connections out there with Kate Mara (or O'Mara) of Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, who I believe was the wife of John O'Neill...they're in the 1911 census in Dowlais. John and his mother and siblings had moved to Dowlais in the 1870's from Valentia Island, County Kerry. Kate's siblings, I believe, were Mary, Margaret, Bridget and Agnes, and brother Patsy. Their parents were Mike and Margaret Mara (or O'Mara). Ring any bells out there? Also, seeking any relatives of Mary Lehan, my great-grandmother, who married Patrick O'Neill (John's brother) in 1876 in Dowlais. Mary Lehan was born in 1859 in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil. Her father's name was Patrick, a native of Ireland, and that's all I know. Any help or suggestions appreciated---cheers!

Hi Pam, yes, my great-great grandfather was John Mara, sometimes spelled Marra. He was married in Ware for the second time in August of 1866. His parents were Timothy and Mary Mara, born in Ireland as was he. After his marriage and before, he had lived in Baltic, Sprague, CT. His first wife died in the early part of 1866. I had no reason to know why he would marry in Ware until I began searching for Mara family in the area of Ware. That led me to New Braintree. Jeremiah Mara had another brother, Cornelius. Both families lived in New Braintree. Both of their parents are listed as Timothy and Mary Mara or Marra as the case may be. So I am not 100 percent postive, but I believe all three men were brothers. Their children all have the same names. From what I have found, Jeremiah and Cornelius and I assume John were born in or near Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. I know most of them are buried in Ware in Old St. William. I knew about the baby, I assumed she was buried there because of Hattie's people. The town historian mentioned that to me too. I have a photo of Timothy C's headstone in OSW and I know what section John T. is buried. I also have a record of Charles Mara. born 1899 to Timothy L. and Hattie. The historian told me it would take a month or so for her to get me info. She is 90 years old, but she seems very with it. I spoke to her by phone. If anything comes out of that, I will let you know when I get it. I have Catherine Lynch Mara's death certificate and it states that she is buried in Old St. William. Timothy L. might be buried there. They have records, but I'm not sure that they are conclusive because it told me that some plots were not used according to what she had, but the stones are very clearly there and some of the records were missing. I don't know when Timothy L. died. Definitely keep in touch and if you have a scan of the pic, I would like to see it.
My name is Fred Raudat. I live in CT.

Hi,
Thanks for the information. I have been working on bringing my Chandler family genealogy up to date. Hattie A. Davis, Timothy Laurence Mara's wife was the daughter of Mary Frances (Chandler) Davis. Mary Frances remarried Charles H. Tucker after Elverton Davis died in 1881. She and her husbands are buried in Tewksbury, Mass (they are on FindaGrave).

Timothy and Hattie had at least 7 children, one of whom (Harriet C. Mara died May 3 1906) died from meningitis at one year and 11 months. According to Harriet's death certificate she is buried in the Southwest Cemetery in New Braintree, MA).

Their other children were Catherine A. Mara (1897-?), Elverton Laurence Mara born in Northbridge and died in Oxford Mass according to the SSDI (1899-1992),John Timothy Mara born in New Braintree, Mass (MVR) and died in West Brookfield, Mass (SSDI) (1905-1980), Harris E. Mara born (MVR) and died in New Braintree(SSDI)(1907-1993) Helen Davis Mara born 18 Sept 1908 (MVR).

They had one more daughter Edith Isabella Mara born about 1902 and died about 1937/41. I have not been able to document either of her dates....but found her picture and thought it could almost be my mother (they were second cousins.) She married John Gregson and they had 4 children. I believe Edith I Mara Gregson is buried in a plot with her son, John R. Gregson(1930-2006) in Brookfield Cemetery. Her husband remarried after her death and is buried elsewhere, I assume with his second wife.

I believe Timothy Laurence and Hattie were farmers, although when Catherine, their 1st child, was born his occupation was coachman at that time they were living in Whitinsville (apparently part of Northbridge). In 1905 at John's birth Timothy was listed as a farmer and they were living in New Braintree.

That's the information i have gathered.

Pam Lacy Hatton

Hi Pam, That is the same family. Timothy and Hattie Mara. He was the son of one of the brothers. There was also Timothy C and Timothy L. I see you posted on my Find a grave wall. Those are all the same family as well. They are not all in the same plot. I spoke to the people at the church in charge of the cemetery. She found plots owned by the Mara family, but the records were inconclusive about who is buried where. I know Timothy C. and his wife Catherine Fallon are buried there and John T. and his wife Henrietta are buried there. I know some of the others are buried there as well. The cemetery was horribly vandalized this year so I couldn't find all the plots when I went there. They are trying to fix it. I have the historian of the town of New Braintree working on getting me info about the family, but I would be glad to hear about what you know.

Jeremiah Marra, Margaret Foley, NYC to New Jersey, Blacksmith

Looking for info on Jeremiah Marra, also spelled Marra, O'Mara. I have also seen Murray. Born in Ireland about 1844, some sources say as late as 1847. Lived in Baltic, Sprague, CT until about 1867. Believed to have relocated to New York City. Son of John Marra and Hannah? Believed to have worked as a Blacksmith. Children Hannah, born c.1868, Jeremiah c. 1872-4, John b. c. 1876 and Dan born c. 1878. Jeremiah Jr. Married Sadie Moore (Sarah) April 6, 1896 in New York. Family is living in Jersey City at turn of the 19th/20th centuries. Jeremiah Jr has John Daniel, Francis, Margaret, Joseph, Edward. Listed in directories there. Father is living with them, occupation, Blacksmith. Jeremiah Jr is listed as glassblower. 1880 census shows Jerry O'Mara as being born in US,in Connecticut, but I believe that is inaccurate as all other records indicate Ireland. But the elder did live in Connecticut and become an American citizen in Norwich in 1867 along with his father, John Marra.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the prompt reply. The William who died in Kyogle was John and Ellen's grandson. His father was William also and had a twin brother named Michael. I would love to hear more about your Mara connection. John Mara was my husband (Michael John Baxter)'s gt gt grandfather. His gt grandfather was William (twin of Michael), grandson of Ernest Mara and son of Mary Clare Mara. Please email me offline at bels@netspace.net.au.
Cheers,
Bel

They moved to Holyoke in 1920 where they made their home until Mr. Mutchie's death, March 17, 1927. Mrs. Mutchie then went to Lincoln where she lived for several years. Since 1942 she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Marie Hyland of Hemingford, Nebraska where she passed away March 2, 1949.

Surviving are William of Holyoke, George and Lawrence of Haxtun, Ralph of Pueblo, Lester of Lincoln, Mildred Williams of Denver, Marie Hyland of Hemingford, Nebraska, and Leonard of Avondale, Colorado. There are 21 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. One grandson was killed in World War II. Her only brother, John Omeara, passed away in Omaha last week. One sister, Mrs. Julia Mutchie, lives at Ogallala, Nebraska.

Mrs. Mutchie was always a devoted mother and homemaker, and a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. A Royal Neighbor since 1916, a past president of the Holyoke American Legion auxiliary, and the St. Patrick's Altar society.

Out of town people here to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Lester Mutchie, of Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mutchie, of Avondale, Colorado; Mr. and Mrs. Nate Williams of Denver; Mr. and Mrs. R.B. I have discovered that we are related to Alice's family (earlier postings here) and wondered how you were going with your research. Our Mara lot came from Golden in Tipperary too. John Mara was in the British military in India before coming to Australia. Hoping to hear from you
Regards,
Bel

I am also looking for Mara connections in Syracuse (or Geddes). My grandmother (the Mara) invented history occasionally, so it's difficult to sort fact from fiction.

She married Fred Haas and the Haas' are buried at St. Agnes.
I believe that Martin worked in the salt works and in later years he had a farm on Fay Road in Syracuse/Geddes. I have been trying to find My grandmother's brother, whose name has been spelled many ways: Rhodie, Rhody etc.

Here was an earlier post of mine:
Searching for information on Martin Marra b. 1838 in Ireland. (Family name recorded as Marra or Mara)

In 1900 lived in Geddes N.Y. His daughter, Mary Ellen Mara (Haas) was my grandmother. Her mother was Mary Brooks, b. ? in Ireland. Mary Brooks must have died in N.Y.in the 1870's. Mary Brooks and Martin Marra had three children: Rhody b. 1866 in Ireland; Mary Ellen b. 1871 in Syracuse; Patrick b. 187?.

By 1900, Martin was married to Bridgette ?, b. Ireland and they were married ca. 1880.

I suspect many of these folks are buried in St. Agnes cemetery in Syracuse.

Thanks.

F. Batchelor
Storrs, CT.

I have baptism info on all of the children, but my question relates to the Mara family and how Mary fits in to that.
Amanda,
Thank you for your reply. I have found the family these things belong to and I have already sent them. You said you just started your research, let me give you a little tip about this hobby.....don't give out info on "living" relatives without knowing just who your talking to. If you need some guiedence, let me know. I'll help. I will tell you this, I was just starting to search my ancestry so I googled the name but mistakingly misspelled it. Lo and behold there was the sister to my g-grandmother right there in front of me. I would never have found her other wise! Also, search images...I found the brother of my grandmother that way. Good luck.
Joyce

Re: Eugene Mara - California and Nevada

I am not related to the family but am doing some research on them and other relatives. Here is what I have found so far. It gets a little complicated by the names changes.

Eugene Mara born October 1843 [per 1900 Nevada census} in Missouril.

He married Eva Stewart in 1867 in Carson City, Nevada.
[Her father was Wellington Stewart, a Lawyer, and her mother was Sarah.]

Eugene and Eva had two children. [newspaper acounts show other babies born but died so I am listing only living children]
Lena/Helen M. born April 1878 [1900 Nevada Census. Theron G. Mara born 2 December 1879 in Nevada. He was named after his grandfather [Theron B. Winston] but used the name "Tump" and the California death index lists him as such.
Reno Evening Gazette newspaper 1921 October 20
Theron Winston Mara, whom his friends know betters as "Tump" arrived from Sacramento last Saturday to spend his vacation with his mother, Mrs. Eva Stewart Mara, and his sister, Mrs. W.P. Epstine.

The newspapers mention that in 1902 he was connected with the Carson City, Nevada prison before going to Sacramento.

Lena/Helena Mara married William Paul Epstine.

Reno Evening Gazette 1919 March 17 page 2
Carson City, Mar. 17. The death of Eugene Mara, while not unexpected, came after all as a shock to his family and friends. In spite of his threescore years and ten he was a young man in appearance and thoughts and no one ever dreamed of classing him as an elderly man. Full of humor and dry wit he was always sought by younger people and this helped to keep him young. In 1917, he and his wife celebrated their golden wedding. Besides his widow, a daughter, Mrs. W. P. Epstine and a son, Theron Winston Mara, survive him.

Reno Evening Gazette 1922 August 17 page 5
Carson, Aug 17.Funeral Servies for Mrs. Eva Mara, who died at her home here last night after a residence since 1859, will be held tomorrow and the remains will be shipped to Oakland, Cal., for cremation. As Eva Stewart, Mrs. Mara was one the first white girls to arrive in Carson. A daughter, Mrs. Willam Epstine; a son Tump Mara, and two sisters, Mrs. Glick and Mrs. Bryant, of San Diego, Surving. All were with her when death came.
{it is noted in other articles that Eva Stewart was once the sweetheart of Samuel L. Clemens {Mark Twain} but didn't like his antics and married Eugene Mara.

Reno Evening Gazette 1922 August 15 page 5
Mrs. Eva Stewart Mara, one of the first three young ladies in Carson City and a person friend of Mark Twain, lies at the point of death at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.P. Epstine. Her son and his wife, her sisters and her daughter are with her constantly.

You can find the Mara family in the Nevada Census records.
1870 in Carson City, Nevada. Eugene 26, a plasterer and Eva 24 keeping house.

1880 has them in Nevada Carson City. Eugene is 36, Eva is 34 and Lena is age 2 and Theron is age 6 months.

1900 Carson City, Nevada. Eugene is 56 born Oct 1843, Eva L is 54 born Sept 1845 and Helen M 22/single born April 1879

1910 Carson City Nevada. Eugne is listed in error as 55 and wife is listed as Lucy E age 63 along with Tump W. 30 and single. Tump is a gas maker at the gas works.

Here is how the name "Theron Winston" came to be.
Theron B. Winston married Mary Ellen Stewart Curry Winston. They had three children. Laura E. Winston [about 1868], Theron G. [born about 1872 in Nevada] and a son named Sharon M. born March 1874.

Mary Ellen was first married to Curry and widowed then married Winston.

Eva [Evelyn] was the sister to Mary Ellen Stewart Curry Winston.

Here is the history of the name: Theron B, the father and Theron G. Winston, his son. Then came along her sister Eva Stewart Mara and named her son Theron Winston Mara.
I know it sounds a little confusing but that is what I have found in the newspapers and census records. I am a docent at the Nevada Historical Society and do historical research for them.

You can view Nevada census records from 1860 to 1920 by going to their website: www.nevadaculture.org some of the names are slight misspelled though.

Hope this helps, Regards, Arline in Nevada

My great grandfather was John O' Mara, who arrived in New York about 1851. He had two brothers, David and Patrick, who we have had no contact with. I believe they arrived on a ship named the Barque Elizabeth. He emmigrated to Iowa, then to Nebraska.

Mary & James Mara's Reward of Merit 1872

I have come across some (what I think are) important papers that need to be in the hands of "the family" from which they came. I have one "Reward of Merit" for James Mara that is dated Dec 31, 1872. I also have five for Mary Mara dated for 1872 and 1873. They had the same teacher....R. Allison. Of this family I know that Mary (Mollie) Mara married Harry Keevil. They had a son (Mara Thomas Keevil) who made their lives in Syracuse, Missouri. If you are from this family, please contact me. These papers need to be in your hands, not mine. Just a note....within all these papers are quite a few (tons actually) of letters back and forth not just with family but with boyfriend/later husband in WW2. Too much "family" information gets lost this way! There is also a DAR application that has loads of info on it. Thanks for your time.....and in return....if anyone out there runs across parents of Pauline Dahlke (b. 1852 Germany) who married William Wolf (who changed his name to Welke upon immigration in 1877) PLEASE BY ALL MEANS LET ME KNOW!!!
