Hi Charity,
We've been in contact before. Lou Hannah's first name is Henretta. I've seen it spelled that way in census records twice so I'm assuming it really is Henretta instead of Henrietta. I do have her in census records with her parents and siblings, her death date and the birth and death date of her youngest daughter. Please email me at rdennis@bright.net. I have a photo of Rosemary taken when she was a little girl. I also have a photo of Rosemary's sister who passed away at a very young age. My grandmother is Macie, sister of Harley.

MARCUM Mildred A. - Toledo, Ohio
A pioneering woman in motor sports and co-founder of the locally based Automobile Racing Club of America -- ARCA -- Mildred M. Marcum died Monday, jan 9, 2011 in Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.
She was at work in ARCA's Temperance headquarters Friday, her 98th birthday, and was feted Saturday at a family gathering.

"She was very animated, very sharp, in a great mood," said Ron Drager, her grandson, who is ARCA president.

She had a stroke overnight. She lived in Erie with her daughter, Suzie Drager.

ARCA sanctions stock car races across the country and owns the Toledo, Ohio and Flat Rock speedways.

Her husband, John -- a race car driver himself -- took her to a race at the Lucas County, Ohio fairgrounds track on one of their first dates.
In their travels, as her husband raced, they met Bill France, Sr., and his wife, Annie, the founders of NASCAR, and the couples became good friends.

The Marcums began the Ohio Auto Racing Association in the early 1950s. As the scope broadened, it became the Midwest Association for Race Cars and finally, ARCA.

"You would never have thought the little racing organization we started in the basement of our home in Toledo would grow into this. … We're putting on races all over the country now," Mrs. Marcum told The Blade in 2005. "Racing gets in your blood I guess."

At ARCA, she kept the money and books in order as her husband traveled. He died in 1981, but she was determined to keep ARCA alive and independent, aided by her daughter. Her grandson Ron became president in 1996.

Most recently, she worked four days a week, her duties more clerical than administrative. Drivers, race officials, and sponsors made time for the matriarch.

"Everybody stopped and visited with Gram," her grandson said. "She was our inspirational leader."

In 2005, nationally known driver Lyn St. James founded an award to honor women in racing. Mrs. Marcum was the first recipient of what became the Mildred Marcum Pioneer Award.

"Grandmother was not a person who [sought] the limelight," her grandson said. "It was very validating for her."

She was a 2000 inductee into the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame.

Born in Hubbard, Oregon, she was a toddler when the family moved to Toledo, Ohio her mother's hometown.
She was a graduate of Scott High School and worked in factories during World War II.

Surviving are her daughter, Suzanne Drager; three grandsons, and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Bennett Funeral Home, Monroe, where visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. Friday.
Contact Blade staff writer Mark Zaborney at mzaborney@theblade.com Published in Toledo Blade on January 12, 2012 Print

i did mine with familytreedna, cost is 289 for that test alone, but they do bundle it it other tests for people that also want to do yDNA or mtDNA, I have done all three tests.

http://www.familytreedna.com/family-finder-compare.aspx

23andMe has a similar test, 209 as a 1 yr subscrption (99 test and 9 a month, guess they hope you never cancel) or 399 with no subscription, but then we would have to download results and use a third party tool to compare, and may not be as accurate since i am not sure they test the exact same way.

Hi all,

Several Jared McDonald male descendants have done yDNA testing trying to both validate recent lines and attempt to extend back to Europe. Using test results and paper trails we have several confirmed relationships, and for a couple we are trying to find the tie in with almost identical results but records do not match up exactly.

One of the things we have seen when searching is many ancestry.com trees that show Edie (Eda/Eada/Ada) as Jared's daughter. Given the birth dates and locations it does not seem that it is possible, but it is hard to get everyone to agree, especially if it means "losing" an ancestor.

We have not been able to identify/contact/convince a direct line female to Jared's wife Eleanor/Elizabeth to do an mtDNA test that could be compared to a direct line female to Edie, who would match if she was Jared's daughter.

Have ANY of the Josiah/Edie descendants done, or are willing to take, the familytreeDNA Family Finder test? I have done this one in addition to the yDNA test. This one allows matching of cousins out to about the 4th/5th cousin level. If Edie was Jared's daughter, we would match up on this test. While it might not confirm Edie was Jared's daughter, since we could be related via someone else, examination of trees for other links would have to be done, if we did not match up, it would make it unlikely that she was Jared's daughter.

If disproved we might be able to convince more people to remove the entry from their tree. With all the recent ancestry.com advertising push on TV telling people to join in the fun, we have more trees with edie as daughter than we have for the other kids that we have documents that confirm the relationship. With her husband a Rev War vet, more people may be trying to prove line to them for DAR/SAR bragging rights.

i think many of these new people just create a tree and accept all the hints as facts without taking time to research since they assume the person who made the other tree did the legwork already.

Keith McDonald

I am looking for any information on a Julia Marcum, married to a David Walker; their son was James Walker born 1861, died 1937. I have no information on her lineage; on James' death certificate her birthplace is listed as WV, as is David's.
To boot, James' marriage certificate lists his mother as Juley Farris or Harris. All very confusing; if anyone has any information I would be very grateful!

I am trying to find more information on Reuben Marcum b. 1830-1835 in Tennessee. I have found him in 1860 Lawrence Co., Arkansas, 1870 Johnson Co., Illinois, There is also a Reuben in 1880 Craighead Co., Arkansas; 1900 Lawrence Co., Arkansas; 1910 Randolph Co., Arkansas, not sure this is the same person. I am trying to determine if he could be the oldest child of Green Berry & Anna Marcum of Hawkins Co., TN. I have a copy of a civil war diary from William Anderson Marcum that mentions a Reuben several times, I'm thinking this could be his brother as I am missing a male child born to this family about that time. Does anyone have anything they can add to this?

George Marcum from Louisa, KY

I have traced my step-fathers line back to George Marcum from Louisa, KY (DOB 1878). The 1880 census lists the mother as being Elizabeth, whom I have linked to Elizabeth Elswick. By searching for one of Georges siblings (Monitor Marcum), I found the 1870 census which lists the father as Josias Marcum. After scanning the census pages before and after his, I think he is actually Josiah S. Marcum, grandson of the more famous Josiah S. (The Vulcan) Marcum through William Hurley Marcum of Virginia.

Two things- First, does anyone have any pictures or other information on the children of Josias (Josiah S.) and Elizabeth?
Children are- Tennessee, Monitor, Mary and George

Second, are my assumptions totally off-base here in linking these people together? The only thing I know for certain is that George Marcum was born in the 1870s in Louisa, KY and the census I found for him based on that. Any pointers to confirm or deny my assumptions would be appreciated here.

Hello,

i am descended from Jared McDonald b est 1740 d 1808, and raised family in Fauquier Co, Va. with his wife Eleanor Atchinson.

For some reason people are saying that Josiah's wife, Eada/Edie/Eda/etc is the daughter of this couple. Eleanor was born in 1747 so she would have been 13 when Eada was born. Eada was born in 1760, before Jared and Eleanor were married, no mention of Jared having a previous wife. Eada was born and died, in Cabell Co, Va (now WV) which is hundreds of miles away from Fauquier Co. in the mid-late 1700's that is quite a distance to travel.

No mention of Eada has been seen in any of the records we have found on Jared/Eleanor

Other than seeing this family link in someone elses posted online tree and adding it to your own, does anyone have any source reference material to support this claim?

Several of us have done yDNA testing to trace back on the direct mcdonald line. I have been trying to find a living female line (mtdna back to eleanor) or a living son of an otherwise all female line (works for him, not his kids). If I can find one, and there is a living all female/living son chain on the Josiah/Eada line, we could show if Eada is in fact a daughter of this couple.

I have also done the FTDNA Family Finder test which shows cousin matches out to about 5 generations. If there are any descendants of Josiah/Eada who have done the same test, or are willing to do so, it would be one more clue to determine if we are related.

I know for sure my grandfather was half Cherokee Indian. I have a photo of 2 cherokee indian women in full indian clothing and headdress that I have been told were considered some sort of princess. They seem to have been taken in the early 1900's. If you don't have any info about my greatgrandfather or grandfather could you please pass along any info that connects cherokee indians to the Marcums. I don't know much about this side of my family and am definitely intrigued.

James Dennis Marcum was in the military and had 2 children with Mary Jo Kennedy(my grandmother) who is deceased. If I am told correctly my grandfather was murdered.
