Re: Irish "Marine"

I believe that I may have Irish ancestors from the Marine line. Anna Marine came to America in the mid-1800's and settled in New York City (Staten Island). Her maiden name (Marine) was mentioned in an obituary of one of her children. I also found a ship manifest for the ship Roger Stewart that arrived in New York City on October 26, 1853. They listed a family of Marines that included Anna. I'm not sure if that is my ancestor, but it could be. She married a Norwegian named Dahl and gave birth to 9 children - but sadly passed away at the age of 37 in Staten Island (I believe 1876).

If anyone can trace their lines to this Marine family that arrived in America in 1853 - let me know.

David Marine-Phoebe Dennison-Mareeny-Morean-Morene E. Tennessee

Looking for info on Rev John Dennison Marine, b approx 1875, Tenn, to Phoebe Dennison Marine. Phoebe Dennison, dau of William and Emmeline Dennison, was married to David Wilcox Marine (marriage certificate states names as Phebe Dennison and David Mareeny), in 1856 in Jefferson County, Tenn. The 1860 census shows both living in Sevier County (Wears Valley), Tenn. David divorced Phoebe in the early 1870's and married Mary, word has it he took his children with Phoebe to include Caroline, James Lincoln and George Washington Marine with him, they resided in Knox County until his death in 1909. He may have been using the name Morene or Morean during this period. My great-grandfather, known as Rev John Marine, was born in 1874 to Phoebe, he is shown as John Dennison, grandson, on the 1880 census, living with William and Emmeline in Panther Springs, Hamblem County Tenn. My great-grandfather must have assumed the Marine family name after he reached adulthood. Looking for information on what happened to Phoebe, have found records which could indicate she married Zebede Kelly (Relly) after her divorce from David and who my great-grandfather's father was. I am assuming David is not his biological father since he had married Mary by the time John was born. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

My fathers family has always claimed a connection to James Whitcomb Riley. On Ancestry.com in The Coggeshalls in America pages 194-195 it discusses that connection. However it lists John Marine's wife as "Fannie (Cox) Marine." It also simply indicates that Mary Ann Marine, there daughter, was the sister of James Whitcomb Riley's mother.

Can anyone clarify this anomaly? My guess would be that it is an error and Fannie is actualy Ester Francis "Fannie" Jones.

I have known for sometime that he was an attorney in Havana, Cuba but under what circumstances there was no clue. He married Belen Montes of Camagüey, Camaguey, Cuba abt. 1912. I would be most interested in having a copy of what you have available. Is there a charge for your research?
Thank you, Diann

Sons of Milleson & Lavinia (Major) Mareen
Milleson and Lavinia had 8 sons - Jonathan, William, Charles, James, Alexander, Thomas, John, and Major.

I am looking for information about Charles, b.1669; Thomas, b.1675, d.1749, m.Mary ___; and John, b.1677. I have reason to believe that at least one of the three may be the projenitor of the Marim family of Delaware.

In his book, "Revised History of Dorchester County, Maryland", Elias Jones says that "This family [Marine] should not be confounded with the other families on the Eastern Shore of Maryland of similar name,...". Jones mentions the Marim (Mareheim) family of Delaware. I don't agree with Jones for several reasons, one of which is as follows: My GGG grandparents, Ruhamah Marim and Cornelius Comegys, lived in the old Marim ancestral home near Dover, Delaware. The name of the home was "Cherbourg".

The Marine/Mareen family was from Normandy in France. Cherbourg is a seaport city in Normandy. The original portion of the house "Cherbourg" was built in about 1715 by John Marim. I believe he must have chosen this name because of his family's connection to the city of Cherbourg and possibly to the Marine family. The Marims and Marines all lived in the same areas of Maryland and Delaware at the same time.

As for the name Mareheim, it has never come up before in any of my research.

Can anyone help me establish whether or not the Marims and Marines are parts of the same family? I have been unable to find any earlier ancestry for the Marims - the Marine connection seems to be the only logical way to go. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Should a connection be found, I would be happy to share what I have on the Marims.

Bob Brown
Yes, I can, I believe she is from the same line I am from. While I have not verified any of the info, please remember that, I show her mother as Francis Jones and that she was born in Rockingham, NC, died in Hancock, County, Indiana. This particular Marine line (in IN procounced with a long I as in brine) belonged to the Quaker church and they have extensive records in the Quaker history books. If you belong to Ancestry.com, they have a great deal of info on the line you are researching and can help a great deal.

Our Edward was first married to a Rachel. i don't know when they were married, but she is listed as a spouse on a document that my mom has... His second wife was Mary Ann (or Margaret Ann, can't remember which as they were sister and run side-by-side theu Washington CH) Ross, divorced her, and then married Margaret (Arehart) Geller, who seems to have stuck!

While I can say that some of the names are familiar, I don't recognize them as members of his family.

If you can help me with this, I would be thrilled beyond comprehension! We have been trying to link to this family for years, and several people tell us that we are, altho, no one can give us proof!

Funny story:

Last year, we went to a viewing of a distant relative. One of the nephews (son to the brother) lives on what was once Edward's son, Robert's land (confusing, I know, it was Robert's land lol). In talking to the son, I said several times that my maiden name was Marine (pronounced Mareen) and that this was once my GG Grandfather's land. He finally got haughty with me and said, with a sniff, "It is pronounced Marine, with a long I, not Mareen. You obviously don't know anything about this family."

Uh, okay... It has only been my name my whole life.

Even his mother, who is a judge in a Probate Court, and a very proper and wonderful woman, looked at me and rolled her eyes.

All I could think to say was, "Tomato, tomahto..."

Hello David. Your information sounds a lot like mine. My great grandmother was Charlotta Marin (b. 1836 in Agunnaryd, Kronoberg, Smaland, Sweden) who married A. Peter Jacobsson Wedin in Sweden. They all came to America in @1870 and settled in Princeton, Illinois. Her brothers & sisters were John (Johnnes), Peter Ellman, Ingrid, Ulrika, Carl (b. Feb 21, 1840), Johan, Otto, & Magadelena Marin (pronounced Marine). Could the Carl above be your Charles? Their parents were Jon Johnson Marin & Pigan Stina Jonsdotter. I have more information on the Marin family if this seems to be your family.
Frances Wedin McMullen

Hi,
Thanks for your help. Evidence from a family Bible is considered very accurate and sound. It is too bad that the family trees on Rootsweb.com are so mixed up about this relationship. I wonder if the Moormans were somehow related to the Jones family. I also wonder why two Marine brothers were named almost the exact same name -- one Jonathan Marine and the other John Marine. Do you have any more information on this?

Thanks again for your reply!

Sincerely,

Susan E. Davis

Hi,
One of the "proofs" that Frances (Jones) Merine was James Whitcomb Riley's maternal grandmother is in the Riley family Bible [published 1851] on display at the James Whitcomb Riley Birthplace in Greenfield, Indiana.
The fourth of four pages of family records in the Bible is of the Merine family and some of those entries are as follows: "John Merine was born June 28th 1782. Frances Jones was born Oct 16 1786. We were married November 16th 1803" "Elizabeth was born Octr 16th 1823" "Fanny Merine Died Augt 25th 1835".
The first three pages of family records in the Bible are of the Reuben and Elizabeth (Merine) Riley family. Some of those entries are as follows: "Reuben Alexander Riley and Elizabeth Merine were married at Union Port Randolph County Ind. on the 20th day of February A. D. 1844." "James Whitcomb Riley was born in Greenfield Ia on the 7th of Oct 1849."
[Note: Some of the entries on the family records pages in the Bible include the once used abbreviation of Ia for Indiana. The spelling of the Merine/Marine family surname appears to have standardized to Marine.]
