Ella Stanfield possibly married a Burnard/various sp Morris/var sp abt 1868-9 GA? & perhaps James L Simkins 1876

Hi I am searching for an Ella Stanfield/var sp who married Burnard/Bernard/Barnard/etc Morris/various sp including Mc or Mac added to front and an "h" at the end. They married in about 1868-1869 perhaps in Spaulding Co, GA.

Ella was the daughter of Elza (nee) Stanfield Jordan. The couple inc an 8 mo old son are living with Eliza(h) Jordan, widow on the 1870 census of Spaulding Co, GA.

I also have an Ella Morris/var sp who married in 1876 possibly Spaulding Co, GA or elsewhere to James L Simkins/various spellings. I am wondering if this could be the same Ella Morris/various spellings as the first one.

Do you happen to have any information about Ella & Burnard and/or Ella and James in your family lines?

Thank you in advance.

Do you have any more information on William Maris who married Magdalena Levering? Most sources I have seen list a Matthias Maris who married Magdalena Levering.

I'd be interested in whether William (or Matthias) connects to my Maris family, although I suspect he is from a German Maris family instead of my family from England.

I do have a few Leverings in my data; James Walter Levering Jr., son of James Walter Sr. and Alma Genevieve Mellor Baines, married Sara Pauline Dutton. This was early 20th Century, long after the book was published.

Also have a John Levering who married Cora Whitted in 1894 and Anna Eliza Levering who married Henry Louis Edgar probably about 1830.

You are also correct that most of the Marises in the U.S. are members of "our" Maris family, although there are a few others.

E-mail me at raymond -at- maris.net so we can share updated information, if you'd like.

By the way, I am not the one who borrowed your slides! :)
Judy,

Well, pretty much all of the George Marises back then were Quaker, and quite a few Quakers did go against the teaching of the Society and serve in the War. I think at least one of the Quaker George Marises did so, I'm just not sure which one.

I don't really think Roger Maris was connected to this Maris family. His family came to the U.S. much later and they spelled the name "Maras" until changing it to "Maris" while Roger was in high school.

Years ago, I read that Roger Maris' family came here from Italy and he originally spelled his name MARIA.
At any rate, I don't think he is a MARIS. I do think almost all the MARISes are from the same line.

I wish I could get my slides back from a MARIS descendent who "borrowed" them, used them for a presentation which was very well received, then kept them! Bad apple? Certainly a sour taste for me.

Hi Ray:

I agree that the information about the George Maris I'm researching is wrong & belongs to another George. I even found a reference on Ancestry to a DAR marking for his gravesite in NC. But having been a Quaker family, it's really doubtful he served. Another researcher contacted me as she was trying to help someone join DAR on his service & didn't find anything new to prove his service either. Too many George Marises around during that time.
Judy
P.S. Do you know if Roger Maris, the baseball player is connected to this family?

I have the following notes for George Maris (1744-1782), son of John Maris and Katharine Bound:

"According to the 'Roster of Revolutionary Ancestors of the Indiana DAR', he served as a Private of the Fourth Class in Capt. Curtis Lawnes' (Lownes?)Company, Chester Co., PA. in the Revolutionary War. However, subsequent research indicates that this is most likely incorrect and that the George Maris who served was someone else, possibly a cousin of this George. Possibly George (b. 1733), son of George Maris and Ann Lownes or George (b.1761, son of Jesse Maris and Rebecca Owen."

I have no proof of any of this.

According to DAR records, George served as a private in the Chester Co PA militia under Capt Curtis Lownes & Lieut Co Richard Willing. BUT...DAR is now disputing this service. I believe because his family was Quaker. My husband's cousin's grandmother was a DAR member in OR on George Maris' service. I've been trying to find out if there is anything online to dispute what DAR is now saying.
Judy

"Friends 'at the Spring', a history of Spring monthly meeting" by Angie I. Newlin 1984
Genealogical records from Cane Creek MM,NC -Cane Creek MM, Orange Co,, NC on 6 Jun 1767 George Maris received on certificate -Cane Creek MM on 18 Apr 1770 George Mearis of Orange Co. marries Eleanor Lindley of Orange
Co,, NC. George lived a short distance north of the Spring Meeting House. The family name was given to Maris Creek which later was corrupted by usage into Mary's Creek.
m. Elinor Lindley 18 Apr 1770 Cane Creek MM, NC
d. 6 Dec 1782 Orange Co, NC
From Rich:
Our family has many Quakers in NC during the Rev War. Some were classed as Patriots. The following note is written about Elinor's older brother, Thomas (b. abt 1740):
"THE BATTLE OF LINDLEY'S MILL"
The Quakers, because they steadfastly refused to bear arms against their fellow man, were for the most part, neutral during the War of the American Revolution. In the immediate area around Thomas Lindley's land and grist mill in North Carolina, there were both Tory and Whig sympathizers. The Tories were those loyal to the British Crown, while the Whigs were the rebels, or those who sought their independence from England. The Whig forces are said to have commandeered Thomas Lindley to provide flour for the troops from his grist mill. It is most likely for this reason that in the DAR lineage books, Thomas and his son Jonathon, are listed as Patriots.

I am trying to prove George Maris' Revolutionary War service George Maris was born in Chester County, PA in February 1744. He married Eleanor Lindley, born September 1750 in Chester County, PA They married April 18, 1770 in Cane Creek MM, Orange County, NC. Do you have any information as to whether George served in the militia? I did find a George Maris listed in the Pennsylvania militia, but "my" George was living in Orange County, NC, and as a Quaker, would he have served???

Yes! Absolutely!! Please!!!

Lillie Clarissa Maris was a double first cousin to my grea-grandfather. Perhaps you know they were married in Batesville, Texas where Prince had gone because of his TB. I think he only lived 4 weeks or so after the wedding. My understanding is that Prince and Lillie were childhood friends, having attending the Springdale Seminary, a Quaker academy located in Springdale, IA. Perhaps you know that Lillie returned to Iowa, then within a year after Prince's death, she went to Duluth, MN where she enrolled in the fairly new nurse's training program at St. Luke's Hospital. Later she married Fred Stillwell and she died about 1957 I believe in Chicago. I can look up any details if you are interested. Many thanks for your kind offer.
He is my great grfather. We have hit a wall in tracing all from him. I think he might be down from your George W Maris bn 1814 d 1892. I am in Colorado now, he died here but I can't find his information. I have been searching for many, many years. Can anyone help? It says he was in Evans, CO in 1895 and I do know some of our Colorado history. Thank you. ccc6400@yahoo.com
