Hello, I'm just starting to look into the Marl name myself. Although I think its a different Marl family then the one you are talking about. My family came mostly from Alaska I believe. I know my father is Ken Marl, and his father was Stanley Marl.

In searching for listing for Marl, my maiden name, I saw your posting and found it interesting that the Marls to whom you refer are/were in Ulster County, where I was born. There are many Marls in the Walker Valley, Cragsmore, Pine Bush and Ellenville area. My grandfather, Henry Marl, was one of 18 children that lived to adulthood. I am the daughter of Guy Marl and have a brother and sister and we all reside in upstate NY. When was growing up there were MANY Marls, the original 18, their children and the following generation. I have not kept in contact with any of them since both of my grandparents passed away in the 70's at which time we moved away. I know most of the great uncles, but my mother could tell you more about the women. I did not see them much. If you would like more information write to pmarl@cs.com and tell her that I responded to your note. Most if not all of the Marls in that area are part of the original family. I also have been told that my great grandfather was from Germany and the name was originally spelled Marle but the e was dropped at some point. Stories have it that he was one of the first German knife smiths in America and worked for Shrade (sp?) knives in Ellenville, NY. There is a knife that I believe is still produced today by the company, the "Old Henry" , after Henry Marl Sr.

I can also tell you that the Marls were very industrious business men. Many of the sons owed businesses. I rode to school on a bus owned by "Marl Brothers Incorporated", my great uncle owned many of the businesses in Pine Bush and I lived on Marl Road in Walker Valley.

Hope this helps!
