I would love to see the photo -- Annie Marland Pierce is my 3rd great grand-aunt.

Annie Brierly Marland Peirce was the daughter of Abraham Marland and Mary Sykes Marland. She married Thomas Sims Pierce and they had 3 children. (Mary Alice Peirce, Elizabeth C. Peirce and Thomas Marland Peirce).

Their oldest daughter Mary Alice (July 27 1837 - Oct 6 1918) married Edson C. Chick (Jun 26 1843-Jun 22 1915). They had three children: Edson Spauling Chick born in 1871 and must be the baby in the photo. He died in 1907. Eugen Chick (1874-1958_ and Lucia Peirce Chick April 27 1876-Jul 1 1974

Hello-

I am a retired faculty member of Holland Hall School in Tulsa. I am writing a history of the school (founded 1922) and have come across the name LaVerne Marland as an employee of the school in 1942-1943. I know that George Roberts Marland, adopted son of E.W. Marland, the oil magnate, married a LaVerne (sp.) Donahue Denoya and I am wondering if our LaVerne Marland is the same person as George’s wife. I have read that George and LaVerne moved to Tulsa shortly after he left the oil company in the early 40s.

Thanks,

Ron Palma
rpalma1@cox.net

You are right about Laverne Marland. Lydia is incorrect however. Her name was Lyde (Lydie) Marland. She was absent from Ponca City for about 22 years during the 50's and 60's into the 70's. The article in the Post also was not entirely correct in its content. The story was sensationalized as the press can sometimes do.

Some years ago, I had email from Matilda "Tillie" Myers: According to her, the children of George Marland were Alfred, George, Henry, Joel, Mary, James and Charlotte Ann. She was uncertain of the birth order but informed me that James was the youngest. This would make Joel E.W. Marland's uncle.

She wrote that her gg-grandfather James Marland (he passed away in 1955 at the age of 95) was a mold maker by trade and organized glassworker unions in Pittsburgh. She mentions his brother Alfred as an attorney in Pittsburgh (this is an error...his SON, E.W. Marland was the attorney; Alfred was in steel manufacturing and served in the Pennsylvania state legislature), and another brother Henry (occupation unknown). She mentions nothing about the other siblings.

I am unsure how accurate some of her information is, but it's a place for you to start.

According to "Lydie's Legend, E.W. Marland's Tragic Love" by Patti Apman (1995), George Roberts was born on November 19, 1897 and Lydia (called Lydie) Miller Roberts was born on April 20, 1900 in Flourtown, Pa to George Frederick Roberts and Margaret Collins (Mary Virginia Collins Marland's sister). On that page in the booklet is a photograph of young George, Mrs. Sam Collins (Mary Virginia and Margaret's mother), E.W. Marland, Lydia and Mary Virginia.

Later, two more children were born to George and Margaret Roberts, Virginia Roberts and Ernest Marland Roberts. George, Sr. is mentioned as a pushcart peddler and there really isn't much substantive information about him.

In any case, the Roberts apparently didn't make a lot of money and like many people in similar situations during those times, farmed out some of the children to more well-to-do relatives. George, Jr and Lydia/Lydie went to Ponca City, Oklahoma in 1912 to visit and never went back home to Flourtown to stay. They were officially adopted by the E.W. Marlands in 1916.

Mrs. Marland (Mary Virginia) died in 1926. In 1928, Mr. E.W. Marland went back to Flourtown to have Lydia's adoption annulled so he could marry her that same year. Their wedding took place in the Roberts home there.

That turns out to be an inaccurate statement in both respects.

There absolutely WAS a LaVerne Marland. LaVerne Donohue Denoya married George Roberts Marland in Ponca City, OK in January, 1930 and remained married to him until his death.

Lydia (called Lydie) Marland INTENTIONALLY disappeared from the public eye for something like 22 years. She left Ponca City in 1953 and attempted to live incognito in a great many locations across the United States. The mystery of her whereabouts was featured in an article entitled "Where is Lydie Marland?" in the November 22, 1958 Saturday Evening Post.
Margo would be my father's 1st cousin and my 2nd.

This is one area we do not know too much about. Eventhough E W was very generous with my grandfather.
Any information you can provide, like the information on his bith certificate and the 4th sibling.
So far I have...George, Lydie, Ernest ( my grandfather) and I dont have the name of the 4th child.
Thank you,
Penny Roberts

In addition to my last post i have found some further information from relatives:

Ruth Marland had a sister called Sarah Marland who lived at 2 albert Terrace New Mills in 1942 - Charles also lived with his aunt at this address 1942.

Ruth (dob unknown) had two children:

Charles Marland dob 19.03.1917 death 1979
Mary Marland dob unknown but born after charles (mary was adopted out to a family in High Lane, Disley)

Apparently Ruth worked as a servant, and according to relatives, this was working for a jewish family - the father could possibly be the son of this jewish family... ruth lived with the father up until the birth of Mary.

Charles married Sybil Wood in 1942, and they had two children: John Ross Marland 28.02.1945 & Linda (dob unknown)

Any help to trace these from my tree would be appreciated..

James Marland & Harriet Hinchcliffe

I am trying to determine which James Marland married Harriet Hinchcliffe. I have found several notes, but no confirmation about James, his occupation, parents, etc. A common name -- leaves me confused. James and Harriet married Jan. 1, 1830 at Mottram in Longdendale, Cheshire, England/Longdendale, England. Harriet was born in Cumberworth, Yorkshire. James was born in Mossley, Lancashire and the family lived in that area. James was born April 7, 1811 in Mossley and died in June 1850. One censust had him as a stonemason. Another researcher said he was a member of the 10th Royal Hussars. I'd appreciate any help to assure that I have the correct James and who his parents may be. Greetings to all fellow Marlands!

I would like to know if you have pursued Mary Beardsell as she may well be linked to my James, Ruth, Noah, Elizabeth, Hugh, Mark, Joshua, William James, and Jonathan. They had connections to Almondbury and Kirkburton as well. Would look forward to hearing from you.
Liz (Beardsell) Czak
