Hi Robert,

Unfortunately I have no information on the Gaham name. I am trying to interpret the spelling of the maiden name of my ggg grandmother. The spelling on her son's marriage certificate is difficult to read. My specific interest is in the Marmion name of Kilmessan, Ireland.
Best of luch with your searching, it is very difficult to find specific information for Ireland due to the loss of records.

Cheers, Virginia

Jim
I found that my great-grandfather John Marmion was born in Dundalk in 1837. He died in Brisbane, Australia in July 1863. His father was Thomas Marmion off Dundalk, a tanner, who had property in Park Street and Clanbrassil street.
His mother was Theresa McCann.
Good luck, Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,
It is great to hear from you again. I too am in contact with Jimmy Finnegan, his email and yours reached me at a similar time. The story I got from a great aunt who died in 1980s at the early age of 90, told me that two brothers came out from Ireland Peter (my g-g-g grandfather) and his brother (never new name). They landed in WA, Peter came around to Victoria and the other brother stayed in WA. It seems from Jimmy's emails that John might have died in WA, but I have not been able to find any trace in WA records, nor shipping records, but I too will go back over old ground.
This is such exciting news, I have been searching this line for 30 years, being a direct relative (my maiden name is Marmion). Hope to hear from you again soon. Happy to share what ever information I find.

My personal email address is vnoonan@tpg.com.au

Cheers, Virginia

Virginia, hello!

James Finnegan has shared an impressive amount of information about the Marmions in Meath. I think he has definitely found my great-grandfather. I believe that Peter Edward Marmion was your great-great-grandfather? His marriage in Melbourne suggests that my vague belief, that John and Elizabeth Marmion went there , may be right.
I have looked at the passenger lists for both John and Peter Edward without success but must go back for another try. Thank you for your message.

Best wishes, Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth,

Thanks for your email. I just received an email from James Finnegan last week re the Marmion's in Ireland. I am going to spend some time today looking through all the information. It is exciting after so many years (eg 30 years of searching) that I have finally found somebody who can hopefully help me with the missing links. I will start doing some searching in WA for John Marmion's grave and see what I can find out. Will definitely keep you informed, you never know what I will be able to dig up at this end.

It is so exciting,

cheers, Virginia

Greetings, Virginia!
It seems probable that your great-great-grandfather was the brother of the John Marmion who was my g-g-father. I have recently been sent a lot of information by Ancestry member James Finnegan and he has established a lot of material about the Marmion family in Meath, Ireland. I now know that my grandmother was Elizabeth Mary Marmion, nee Finegan, and that she was already the mother of Elizabeth, born 186o in Louth, Ireland. John died fairly soon after reaching Australia and his widow returned to Ireland where she re-married. She was very young, about fifteen, when she married and had a child .
I did not know any of this when I read your message in April. Perhaps by now, you know a lot more about your
g-g-father Peter Edward.
Best wishes, Elizabeth

I am grateful to hear from you but am really woefully ignorant of any detailed information. My paternal grandmother was born Elizabeth Marmion, about 1860.Family legend has it that she was born in Australia but was taken back to Ireland when her father died.
She died in 1920 while my father was at sea. This was long before my parents married so the only stories come from my father's memories of what he had known as a boy.
I have no reason for my belief that the Marmions went to Melbourne just a feeling that I was told that once.
I suspect that there must be a record of his death there if that is where he died. He would have had a Catholic funeral. His wife was the daughter of Lawrence Finegan, a brewer in Navan, Meath.
I'm sorry this doesn't tell you very much.
Best wishes, Elizabeth

Hi,

I am not sure whether there is a connection or not. The family folk lore is that two brothers did come to Australia, my great-great grandfather Peter Marmion about 1861. This date is confirmed because of his marriage to Mary Morris (nee O'Brien) at the Catholic church in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. I am curious to hear from you regarding information you may have about your great-grandfather here in Australia and in Ireland. Hopefully, together we can find some of the missing jigsaw.

Cheers, Virginia

I am searching for my great-grandfather Marmion. (possibly John) He and his wife went to Australia around 1860 when my grandmother was born. He died and his widow returned to Ireland, where she later remarried. Great-grandmother Josephine Finegan was from Navan, Meath. I am very interested in the possibility that he may have gone to Australia because some of his family were there already.

Hi

My grandfather was Gerald Marmion, born 1900 and he died in the 70's. Survived service in both world wars but this did tell later. Final service was in Burma as acting Captain in the artillery, where he was awared the military cross (but he never wore his medals - he said the ones who did give everything gave their lives)

Mention of Ireland is of great interest, as Gerald was offered some Flax mills over there by his family (the Marmions), but declined. (His family also owned a shipping company).

My grandfather spent his later years in Deganway, N. Wales with my Grandmother.

Any information linking with this would be greatly received.

Regards

Simon

We want to build a central Marmion community...share info in the US and wordlwide....we belive they were all connected in 18th century Ireland somehow...it would be intresting to find out...you can post your own family pictures and leave messeges to others
Happy Hunting.

Mr, Boecher,
Thank you so much for your response.Well, my grandfather was named Charles Marmion, but I am not quite sure of his middle initial. If you have any further info I would greatly appreciate it.I am very curious as to what the origin of my last name is because I have been told by some family members it is from England, others say it is from Ireland. Since I am Hispanic I am highly interested as to how far back the Hispanic influence goes. All of the members of my family in town are Hispanic as well. I only have the knowledge of my grandfather being of mixed race and marrying my mexican grandmother. Thank you so much for all your time and attention to this- i really appreciate it!!
