I have personally photoed Issac Taylor Marquess' home in Marquess, Preston Co.,WV and I have researched many of his descendants. I have researched his brother James's personal info in Hardy County landownership records and in wills and records of estate auctions where he was mentioned. My most thorough research is about Fanny Marquis/Marquess and Solomon H. Groves descendants. I have visited Maysville and the Patterson Creek section of Grant Co.,WV and I have tried to identify where the family lived. I was recently sent photo's of the burial site of her grandson, Solomon Hiram Groves.

There were assumptions made about the Marquis/Marquess family in Frederick County that are published that do not seem to jib, two brothers named Kidd William and William Kidd. Sarah Taylor Sunderland Marquess brought children into her marriage with William "Kidd" and that may have taken Marquess name according to someone. I have nothing to support this theory.

I have a copy of Sarah's will that is written in German giving her son-in-law, Solomon H. Gross (or Groff) (Groves), 16 acres of land. It appears that she was living with Fanny at the time of her death, although I am not sure.

My study of my Marquess/Marquis ancestors is at best fuzzy. I have personally research about Issac Taylor's home in Marquess, Preston Co.,WV and many of his descendants. I have researched James entries in Hardy County landownership and wills and estate auctions in which he is mentioned. My most thorough research is about Fanny Marquis/Marquess descendants. I have visited Maysville, now a part of Grant Co., WV, and have tried to identify where the family lived. I was recently sent photo's of the burial site of her grandson, Solomon Hiram Groves.

I still cannot resolve that there may have been two brothers named Kidd William and William Kidd. I have read that there is a possibility that Sarah Taylor Sunderland Marquess brought three children into her marriage to my ancestor William "Kidd" and that those children took the surname Marquess. That could explain it, but I have nothing to support this theory. I have a copy of Sarah's will that is written in German giving her son-in-law, Solomon H. Gross (or Groff) (Groves), 16 acres of land. It appears that she was living with Fanny at the time of her death, although I am not sure.

I would love to look at the leaves at the top of our tree. There were assumptions made about the Marquis/Marquess family in Frederick County that are published that I do not seem to jib, and I do not want to affirm inaccurate information. Wouldn't it be nice to be handed a document account of the family? Do you know if the family was originally living in Winchester, Frederick Co., VA or if they were located in the Maysville area all of the time? Maysville would have been located in Frederick County originally and with the divisions of counties in Virginia, it later was in Hampshire and then Hardy counties. Currently it is located in Grant Co., WV.

Darrell Groves
Don't know if I can help. My family is also tied in with yours around Frederick Co. The way mine goes is like this: Samuel Marquis (b. prior to 1683 in Ireland), son William (1683-1750) & Margaret Colville immigrated here, then Robert (1718-1786)& Elinor, then George (1747- 1835) whose daughter Mary (1791-1854) married my GG grandfather James Scott, then William Rand Scott, then Sylvester, then George, and then me. I hope this may help in some way. Please get back to me if you have any ideas. I'm trying to find where James Scott is from in Ireland.

I believe my great grandfather Alexander Marquis was in Lawrence MA in the 1870 census. If it is the correct Alexander Marquis his father was Lange Marquis. I believe the family immigrated from PEI between 1850 and 1870 to Lawrence. My great grandfather married Emma Webster in 1971 in Haverhill and they moved to Texas in 1879 for him to be a minister in a new Christian Church. Do you know anything about this family? I am trying to confirm that the Alexander on the census is my great grandfather and if so, any additional information going back in time.

He wasn't on internet when I first posted but you will see his reply to my original post. Try his email to see if he is still there. I am in Australia and Steve & I corresponded over the LeRoy line, from memory....it was quite a while ago.
Get back to me if you can't make contact with Steve and i will see what I can do for you...may still have his postal address.
Good luck. I'm sure he will be delighted to hear from you.
Margaret.

Thankyou Steve for this wonderful reference to the Marquis line in the Bellefontaine Presbyterian Church. I think my line of the Marquis family may come from a son of William Marquis who was born in Ireland before William left there. This has been the puzzle for me and if anyone has any leads on this line, I would be glad to hear from them.

I just now saw your post on George Washington Marquis,
the roomer in my family said our George Washington McKee's
name was Marquis. Our George per census in 1860,1870 and
1880 says he was boorn in France. That when he got to US
they couldn't spell his name so put down McKee instead of Marquis.

I guess my question to you, was this George Washington Marquis born in France or on a ship coming to the US at
Cape Horn?

We having been searching for years for the answer, so any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Donna McKee Wells (dlw7@allegiance.tv)

Bill

Have you looked in the History of the First Presbyterian Church of Bellefontaine. There is a really good genealogy of the Marquis line. Here is the link to the e-book:

http://www.archive.org/details/historyoffirstpr00infirs

Well She lived in PA, as born in Va, and Died in Belmont County, Ohio that is all I know. Have been researching her and family for over 10 years off and on. My sister was doing most of the research, but she died 2 years ago this April. Oldest member of the family (Mary) could care less about "ancient history." Thanks for replying, Sincerely, ~ BILL

I recently visited the Library in Winchester VA to go through their archives. I found a copy of Thomas Marquis and John Wilson land grant from Lord Fairfax. I am in the process of transcribing the grant, it is not the best copy. The abstract states that there is a Marquis Spring, which is somewhere near the Opequon Creek.

I found in a book that there was a Marquis Mill in the area (probably along the Opequon Creek). There was no description of where the Marquis Mill was located. The book is "Shenandoah Valley Pioneers and Their Descendants:
A history of Frederick County, Virginia" by Thomas Kemp Cartmell.

If any one has information on the Marquis Spring or the Marquis Mill, please let me know.

S.
I am trying to figure out where I fit in. I have found good records back to about 1860.

Here is what I know: (heading back in time)
Aronld Marquis Centralia,IL > John "Will" Marquis & Florence Mcbride > James Marquis & Lydia Short > William Marquis and Elizabeth ? Ohio. > ??

There is a William Marquis & Elizabeth in Tiffin, Ohio that I know is NOT my William and Elizabeth since their son James E Marquis married Lydia Dickinson. (have have not completely rule this out)

This is where my trail gets cold. I found that Elizabeth remarried in 1857 Logan Co, Ohio to Matthew Hair. 1860 census shows James living in household of Matthew Hair. I found the marriage records for Matthew Hair and Elizabeth Marquis. I also have the marriage record for James Marquis and Lydia Short.

I have been looking for death records and birth records to see if I can connect the William Marquis & Elizabeth.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Hi Hal, I believe I am descended from John Marquis who was a brother to Thomas. My information says that two brothers, John and another were born in Ireland, the other siblings were born in the US. According to information I have seen, their father was William George Marquis b 1683 in Letterkenny, Donegal, Irel, m 1717 in Ireland, died abt 1750 in Winchester, Frederick VA. I have seen other trees that cite his wife as Margaret Colville, born abt 1685 in Antrim Irel, died about 1745 in Winchester, Frederick, VA. I have not been able to find out anything before them.

I am new to the family tree business, and am just getting started on citing my documentation for my records so that I have an idea how credible my information is. If you want, I will go through my records and see what exactly I have about William Marquis. But it may be the same things you have seen already.

Susan Chan

It is my understanding that all the Marques names and spellings in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia are all related. Look under William Marques b. 1683 Ireland and Margaret Coleville, the came to Maryland about, 1720, then went to pennsylvania. A few of their children came later to Virginia. There is a wealth of information out there. Google descendants of Oswald Zoz, he has all the Marques history.

Thanks again for your help. I found some useful information on the Marquis/Marquess line back to 1720 from First Presbyterian Church of Bellefontaine Ohio. So I am wondering if anyone has looked at or found the passenger list for William Marquis coming to America in abt 1720? Also, has anyone found records from Ireland?

Steven

There was an Alexandre Marquis from Quebec who died at Fort Duquense during the French Indian Wars. This would have been early 1700s. George Washington was a young Colonel.

I found that the US Parks Dept at ( I think it is) Fort Duquesne has a one liner concerning his death in OCT (date I can't recall) but it was a few months after the major conflict there. I have more info at home.

IS this who you are looking for?

Wildpurple,

I read your post concerning swedish Viking roots. Where did you find such information? I would love to hear more on this topic. I have attempted to contact the local church in Mortagne-Sur Sevre, but they do not return my e-mails.

I'm not sure. James Marquis is a reoccuring name in the Marquess/Marquis line and the family did migrate to Darke Co., Ohio. I could not connect your James to the two lines that originally migrated to the Winchester-Opequon, Frederick Co., Virginia area, but the chances are that you are related to one of them. My family kept the Marquess spelling, but as they moved West they changed it to Marquis.
