David Marr and Minerva Bissell

During my recent trip to Cass County, Michigan, I found the cemetery where David Marr (1796-1867) and Minvera (Bissell) Marr (1804-1881) are buried. They are buried in Crawford Cemetery near Cassopolis, MI. David's stone was broken and almost unreadable. Minerva's stone was paritial buried and slightly more readable. I am having a new stone set with both names and birth and death informaiton. I also hope that the stone carver will be able to add the information for James W. Marr, one ot their sons, who is buried with them. David and Minvera are my 4th great grandparents. Their son, Chauncey Marr, and Dorcas (Liggett) Marr are my 3rd great grandparents. They are buried in Rooks County, Kansas. If you are interested in more details, please e-mail me.

Anybody there related to me? My grandfather
was Waldemar Marr, born in Kiev around 1880
but of German parents. His ancestors
came from Scotland (hence the name Marr).
I also have a German passport, but have lived in
Ireland for most of my life - here the name
Marr is spelt Maher and Meagher - but is has
the same Gaelic root as the Scots MARR

I'd love to hear from anyone out there with any news.

Michael

My grandfather's name was Thomas Edward Marr, his father's name was Edward Marr and he was born in Orinsky Falls, NY. When my grandfather was very young his father left him and my great-grandmother. They lived in Michigan at the time. My great-grandfather Edward remarried and had a new family and I believe he had two sons, one named Eugene and the other's name started with the letter "H". They probably lived in either Michigan or New York but that could be wrong.

If you have any information I would love to get in contact with you. Thank you so much.

Jane?Helen Marr of England

I'm hoping maybe someone can help me. I'm looking for information on my maternal grandfather's mother. This is what I have found:

Listed on my grandfather's birth certificate as 40 years old in 1912. (makes her birth year, according to that, around 1872)

Listed on the 1920 New Haven, CT, US census as Helen Dolan, 43 years old (which would make birth year around 1876 - one must be an error.

Her husband was James Dolan. She is listed as married on that census, but husband is not listed and she is listed as head of household.

Children -
Elizabeth, Anna, Katherine, James, WIlliam, Matthew, Frank, Dorothy, Jennie (listed on census Jennie, but would match my mom's Aunt Janet- no one ever heard of Jennie - name change?)

She and all of the children but Frank are listed as 1911 year of immigration (Frank born 1912)

I found a Jane Helen Marr and a James Dolan both listed on the same page, same volume of the England Wales Civil Registration index for marriages in Sunderland, Durham in the June 1892 volume. It would seem to be a great coincidence that both of their names list on the same page, so I think it is them.

IF this is her, then possibly she could be the Jane Marr listed in the LDS Family Search as born 18 Feb 1872 to John Marr and Mary Jane.

Can anyone help me to figure out how to confirm any of this or possibly does anyone have any info on this line?

Sarah Marr (born about 1794 Cherokee Territory NC)

Eastern Cherokee Application No. 42454 (submitted 2 Aug 1907...attorney handling was in Ellijay, GA) is that of Robert Marion (R.M.) Withrow. Robert Marion was the son of Jonathan Withrow (1815 Buncombe County NC--1889 Gilmer County GA) & Margaret Patterson (1815 NC--1866 Gilmer County GA). In his application, Robert Marion claims his maternal grandmother was Cherokee, saying, "My grandmother was a daughter of Alex Marr who was a full Eastern Cherokee Indian and so was his wife and lived in Cherokee County N.C." He goes on to say, "I have always heard that my ancestors the Marrs drew money from the Govt. as Eastern Cherokees." Robert Marion's claim was rejected.

I, as well as other Patterson & Withrow relatives, have searched for many years to track down this claim. Has anyone, who has researched the Marr families of SC & NC in the late 1700s, run across any information that might give me a fresh avenue to pursue in our efforts to verify the heritage of our Sarah Marr (who married James Patterson in NC). Together they had:
(1) Robert Patterson (c.1812 NC) married Margaret Withrow
(2) Rebecca Patterson (c.1813 NC) married David Withrow
(3) Margaret Patterson (c.1815 NC) married Jonathan Withrow
(4) William Andrew Patterson (c.1822 NC) married Malinda Rose
(5) Peter Patterson (c.1817 NC) married Carrie Green; then Mary Kimbrough
(6) Joseph Milton Patterson (c.1827 NC) married Sarah Catherine Green
(7) Jeptha Patterson (c.1828 NC) married Mary Aveline Cabe, then Hattie Millican, then Carrie Mabry.
All of these Patterson siblings removed from NC to Gilmer County GA in the mid-1840s.

Marr Legore Children in Oregon around 1900

I'm trying to find the parents of Glenn Marr who was born in 1904 in or around Joseph OR and died in 1955 in San Jose CA. His mothers maiden name was Legore and I think Odell Marr was his Uncle which would make William T. Marr his grandfather but none of the other children of William seem to have married a Legore so I'm lost. Any information would be appreciated.

Ayrshire or Aberdeenshire. James & Bridget MARR [nee KNOX]

Hi
I am trying to establish which of two families is the right one. I m searching for JANE MARR who married CHARLES KEENS on 24th Oct 1878 at the Old Church, Ayr.

Jane's age is 26 and her parents are listed as JAMES MARR [a railway guard] and BRIDGET MARR nee KNOX.

Charles is listed as an army private age 39 and his parents are JAMES KEENS [deceased] and SUSAN KEENS nee SHEPHERD [deceased]

My research from his birth certificate and the English census show returns show that his father was indeed James Keens but his mother was MARY EDWARDS. The census puts Jane as being born within 3 years of the earlier Jane, and in Scotland.

Is it likely that 2 different Charles Keens of exactly the same age, with the same named father married 2 different Jane Marrs, both from Scotland, at just about the right time before the birth of their first child in 1880?

I have searched the BDM records and English census returns and cannot find a marriage for any Keens to any Shepherd. there are no census returns for his parents after 1841.

Any ideas or compatibility with anyone in your trees?

Happy to reciprocate.

Steve

James Marr

This goes way back to 18th century England. Does anyone have in their family tree a James Marr, christened 13 Jan 1788 in Thwaites, Cumerbland, England, (parents: James Marr and Sarah?) and who married Rachel Pringle 13 Nov 1808, All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. Their daughter, Margret Pringle Marr was christened 22 Aug 1813 Old Postern or Claverin Place, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. Margret was my g-g-grandmother, and is buried in Ipswich, MA. She married Charles Archibald, who was born in Eckford, Roxburgh, Scotland. ANY info concerning any of these would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Diane

I would very much appreciate hearing from as many of you as possible just to continue building the family Tree. There is approx 12 of us working together sharing stories and photos. Look forward to hearing from any of the Marr's, espically from Maine. Tks: Owen Marr

I can't find him in the UK after birth.

I started out on my family tree a couple of weeks ago and have made decent progress. Along the way I have picked up some information on other branches of the Marr tree that as yet are not related as I followed a wrong lead.

As most of my tree is based around the Glasgow area I found the www.Marr-family.com website quite interesting. At this point it doesn't appear to be linked to my own tree but I did find one entry missing from the tree. I would like to notify the person that I have this information but cannot contact him by email and the guestbook no longer works.

If he reads this then get in touch or if someone knows him could they please let him know. It concerns a death certificate I have found for Hugh Marr who died in 1888 aged 1878. He was the son of Thomas and Susan (m.s. Adams) . The certificate was signed by his son Robert and was registered in Dalziel, Lanark.

Cheers

Gideon Marr-VA in the 1700s

In researching the Davidson/Davison line, I was provided the following record from Pittsylvania County, VA:

John Daverson (probably actually Davidson/Davison), plantiff; Gideon Marr, defendant (28 Jun 1771).

Note: On the same day in the same court, a Richard Davidson was the plaintiff against a John Fulton. On 24 Jun 1769, a William Davison was the plantiff against a Henry Dunlap in Pittsylvania County, VA.

I hope the above helps the Marr family researchers. There is another post on this board that states that Gideon Marr MAY have lived in Amherst County, VA.

My father, Glenn Burrell and friend, Walter Thurman, made a trip from Iowa to New York and Niagra Falls. Being a prolific photographer from age 15, Glenn left me many photos. Several of them include the Marr family that they visited in Clymer, NY & Sherman NY. The time frame of the pics is June 1924. I have yet to find any family connection to the Marr family. (However, Glenn's gr grpa, Alexander, emigrated from Scotland abt 1815; and he eventually worked on the Erie Canal before settling in Sandusky Ohio; later Boone co Iowa.

Picture One: Anna Marr with Walter Thurman.
Picture Two: Mildred Marr & Glenn Burrell
Picture Three: The Marr Family; Mildred, Anna, parents, brother in his 20s, and a younger sister. Walter Thurman was also in the family pic. I "assumed", on the other relationships in the family pictured.
As far as I know, I am not connected but hope that this is a connection for someone.
signed Bonnie Burrell Bratton

John Marr from Kentucky or Virginia b/d 1880's

Hi! I'm looking for help in finding info on John Marr born January 29, 1880/1881/1886/1887. He supposedly came from the Louisville, KY area and had 2 brothers and a sister. A niece and his sister lived around Richmond, VA in the 1920's.
John Marr was in Michigan in the 1920's and fathered a son (perhaps out of wedlock). We were told that he died sometime between 1927-1932 in Michigan, but we cannot find a death record registered with the State of Michigan. His body was sent to his sister in Richmond, VA.
It's possible that John Marr also went by the name John Sullivan.
Does this sound familiar to anyone???

I need help. I have traced my family back to John Marr (1773?) to May 26, 1857. He married Elizabeth Wheatley (1773?) on February 11, 1799 in Culpepper County, Virginia.
They moved to Barren County Kentucky where their first son was born in 1801. I notice that there are Weatleys who have posted messages to this site. Maybe there is a connection with Elizabeth. I have that her father was James Wheatley and mother was Lucilla (Lucy) with no maiden name. I have hit that brick wall and any help to get me past it will be appreciated. Thank you.
In the Philippine Islands 1904 from Indian Territory

This might help someone--no other information and not related.

The Daily Ardmoreite
Ardmore, Carter County, Oklahoma

May 2, 1904

Was Believed to Be Dead
It came like a voice from the dead, a letter has been received by MRS. BETTIE TAYLOR, wife of ZACHARY TAYLOR, who resides in the north part of town, form her brother SIDNEY ALFRED MARR at Camp Stratsenburg, Philippine Islands. Three years ago correspondence ceased
and it was feared that with other Americans, Sidney Marr had fallen martyr for his country. In a final effort to learn of his fate, Mrs. Taylor wrote a letter to the record and pension office at Washington, D. C., and on July 30 of last year, received a letter from the bureau chief: ‘The records show that Sidney Marr, musician, Company E, 33rd Infantry, U. S. Volunteers, was honorably discharged from the military service of the United States, March 1, 1901 at Candon, Philippine Islands, because his services were no longer required. The records indicate that he was discharged at the place mentioned instead of being brought home to the United States with his regiment because he had expressed a desire to leave the service and enter business and cast his fortunes with the Philippine Islands. As he became a civilian on the date of his discharge, the department has not knowledge of his present address… suggested that addressing the commissioner of pensions at Washington or the governor of the Philippine Islands. The result has proven successful, and like a voice from the dead, the sister rejoices that her brother still lives. Mr. Marr, who has many friends in Ardmore, writes that he is now working in the quartermaster department, that he has not lost a day since he was mustered from the 33rd and he is in fine health.
Littlefield, Maine 1850 Census

Listed on this census: Elbridge G. Marr 39, his wife Deborah 56, daughter Deborah C. 13 and Joseph Meader 14. Also listed at same house are: Betsy Marr 80, Ann Marr 42, Sabrina Marr 45.
Seems likely that she is Elbridge's step-mother, instead of his mother, as she would have been 41 when he was born and 59 when youngest child was born.
Does anyone know who Ann & Sabrina are??? How about Joseph Meader??

Jim Jamison records that he married 4-4-1790 Elizabeth (Betsey) Sawyer, children: Elbridge b. 1-11-1811, Winter b. 3-27-1814, Drusilla b. ?. That means his first child was born 21 years after he married.
Was Elizabeth Sawyer his second wife? Was he married to Elizabeth Libby in 1790 and then married later to Elizabeth Sawyer?
