Ben,I really think it would be in your best interest to locate a copy of "The Descendants of John and Catherine Marr of Kittery" by James F. Jamison.
Jim exhausted himself on this book. He was in the process of an update to it when he passed away. I have always hoped his son would step up someday and finish that for him, and maybe he will someday.
As far as any solid documentation past John Erskin De Marr goes.....to this day, as far as I know, is not to be found. Mr. Jamison did a lot of disproving though, and that is very interesting. Family tradition is that our Immigrant Ancestor was the Natural son of John Erskine the 23rd Earl of Mar......In his book Mr. Jamison tells in great detail about his quest to prove that, and his ideas of why that proof could not be found. In the 1800's many of the Marr descendants tried, and spent a ton of money doing so. Jim had proof of that. It is all VERY interesting and well documented.
I would love to have copy of your PDF file...you can email it to me and I will compare it to that of James Jamison's.

For anyone else reading this.....I am willing to do look-ups from the book. Marr is my Maternal lineage.
For those who own the book, on page 110 is a photo of William Riley Marr and several other family members...the man on the right of William Riley is my Gr. Gr. Grandfather, John Sanborn Marr.....if anyone can identify any of the others, please, please let me know.
Shirley Dawson shirleydawson@centurylink.net

I, too, am researching the Marr surname in my family research. My great-grandmother was a Marr and I have researched her lineage back to John Erskin de Marr (your # 20) but I have very little information on him. It looks like your PDF file would fill in quite a few holes for me. Could you send me that file? I may be able to help you flesh out some of the more recent family lines in exchange for your help. I look forward to hearing from you and helping each other out. Thank you.

I have Genealogy of my family beginning with Jospeph Marr born in 1769 in S.C. 1840 census shows he was in Cherokee, NC 1840. Many relatives were later in Gilmer County, Elljay, GA. There is reference to James Alexander "Alec" Marr born April 19, 1865 Bryson City, NC. The first reference to Sarah Marr in my records was she was born about 1816 in Kentucky, married to William Marr. He was born about 1814 in Tennessee. The record does not show her last name. I do not have knowledge of Cherokee Indian affiliation yet realize it is possible.

I am looking for more information about Betsy (?elizabeth) Marr born in Maine 1754 and her family. I know she married John Davis in Maine. My great-great-great-grandfather was her son Sirpliss Davis, his name is spelled differently in different documents. I am interested to learn more about her parents. The only information I have is her father's name Surpluss again different spellings found. I know Marr is of Scottish origin but not sure when they came over. Any information would be helpful and I do have a lot of information about her children and the Davis side of the family if anyone is looking into this. Thanks,

Thanks for the info on the first wife of James F. Marr and confirming James H's mother as Eleanor (not Milcah). I'm fairly certain that James H was born in Baltimore County MD and not DC. Perhaps a search of the Maryland Archives will list his birth.

MARR Charles T.

CHILLICOTHE: Our dad, Charles T. Marr was a kind and gentle man. His height could have intimidated, but it never did. Each time that we were together, we would begin to plan when and where the next time would be. He lives in us, in our children and in those he loved and who loved him. Nothing on this earth in the 64 years that he shared with us can ever take that from our hearts.

Our dad cared so deeply in this life.
He served in the Navy on the U.S.S. Boston off the coast of Vietnam. He was comfortable with laughter and with tears. He wanted to fix whatever needed fixing; he was so skillful with his hands. He loved growing roses and tomatoes; finding rocks; eating Maine lobster and warm blueberry pie; driving narrow winding roads wherever he could find them with the adventure of not knowing where we would end up; watching the sunsets; living and working among the people and under the skies of Kentucky and Tennessee. But most of all, he loved us dearly. We did not want him to leave us on September 13, 2011.

His energy and joy in each day still shine in his mother, Sue B. Marr of Chillicothe, Ohio; in us, his children: Kevin Thomas and Kami Marr of Greeley, Colorado; Juliana Marie and Dane Sprister of Fort Collins, Colorado; and Thomas Edward Marr II of Gallipolis, Ohio; in his sister, Sarah and Bob Fitts of Newport Center, Vermont; in his beloved companion, Linda Momorov Kramer of Chillicothe, Ohio; and in his cherished grandchildren.
His father and best friend, Dr. Thomas E. Marr preceded him in death.

A graveside memorial celebration, of the man he was, was held on September 19, 2011 at Grandview Cemetery as we gathered among the red roses that he had planted on the graves of his father and grandparents.
We joined with his Manchester, Kentucky family of friends in a celebration of his life on September 20, 2011. Arrangements were under the direction of the WARE FUNERAL HOME, Chillicothe, Ohio.

You may sign his online register at www.warefh.com

Ross County, Ohio

After reviewing some of my notes, I remembered... James H Marr's mother was NOT Mary J, who was born in Delaware. His mother was born in MD, married and died between 1856 and 1860. His father was a widower in 1860. If you ever find out who she was, could you let me know?
Thank
Doodlebug

Glad to get to meet you Joe, you are the only person on my mother's side of the family I have, that is a cousin. I have to pull out the family picture box. I have a huge one, some of the people in it I don't know who they are.
Had you ever met Robert & Elsie Dyson? There are 4 of us, Me Karen Lane Marr, Sandra Lee Marr, Thomas Robert Marr & the oldest Cheryl Lynn Marr. Would love an opportunity to get to know everyone, please let them know how to find me on facebook.
Joe, my mother never spoke of her family she loved her father. All we knew about him is that his birth records burned in a fire, we suspected Cleveland. I had found a birth record from Dayton on Ancestry.com I'll get out the pictures & see what I have on my end, maybe you can tell me who they are. Your cousin Karen

Hi Karen,
Actually, John was born in 1863 and his son Robert was born in 1894, so at that time he would have been about 31. The 1900 census says that Alice was married seven years, so I suspect John died about 1899 or 1900. They were living in Cleveland at the time.

That's a great story about Alice! Those stories add dimension to a family history. It must have been a terrible Christmas the year your grandfather passed away! My grandfather passed away on Dec 17, 1971, and that's a time I will never forget. We were so close.

Do you have any photos of Alice and Robert? I'd love to get a scan of them for the family history! I have one photo of Alice's father during the Civil War. He was born in Staffordshire, England, in 1830. I have his pensions records, if you'd like a copy. You and your siblings are the only descendents from Sampson and I'd be more than happy to share everything I have on the family.

By the way, can you tell me where your mother was born? I'm assuming Cleveland?

My God, John Dyson was about 10 to 12 years old when he died. How did he father a son? Everything else you wrote is true. I met Alice Estelle Grokett in a nursing home near Cleveland I think. I was very young 7 maybe. She was so unbelievable 100 years old coming into the room & tossing her legs over the arm of the chair only to say" What s up kids ?"

Robert Ellsworth Dyson died on December 24th of 1963 in his bed at home at 4312 Rush Blvd. Youngstown, Ohio. My parents found him when they were calling him for Breakfast.
He had a massive heart attack in his sleep. By that time Robert Dyson was working as an insurance adjuster for a company out of Cleveland.

The 1900 census has her living with her son in Cleveland where she was working as a music teacher. The census lists her as a widow, having been married seven years, and also reflects that she was the mother of two children, only one of which was living at that time. Alice remarried to William A. Hewitt, whose parents were John and Anna (Rummel) Hewitt, Sr., also natives of Ohio. They set up residence in Cuyahoga County, near Cleveland, and the 1910 census reveals that her fifteen-year-old son, Robert Dyson, was living with them. They are found in the 1920 census, living at 2128 West 101st Street in Cleveland where William was working as a manager for a local cigar company named Pyle and Allen. This is the same place he was working when he completed his World War I Draft Registration card. They were living in Lakewood, also in Cuyahoga County, in the 1930 census, and he had the same job in the cigar company. William passed away in his home in Lakewood on October 23, 1965, and Alice died in Akron on September 11, 1973. They had no children together.
Hi Karen! It is so great to hear from you and I appreciate you friending me on Facebook! I do not have much on your grandfather, except what I've found through research on Ancestry.com, but I do have more on your great-grandparents. Your great-grandfather, John Dyson, died sometime between 1896 and 1900. After that time, Alice, your great-grandmother, married William Allen Hewitt, but they had no children together. John was born about 1867 in German, Ohio, to Joseph and Julia Dyson. Alice was born on December 16, 1873, in Dayton. I have a bio on her that I will send. I also have a lot on your great-great geandfather, Sampson Grokett, and I have one photo of him during the Civil War. I also have his military records! :) Would you or anyone in your family have a photo of Alice or any of her siblings? I actually have every Grokett in the U.S. traced all the way back from when they arrived in 1843. I am so glad to hear from you and will send more a little later. Your cousin, Joe

The Dyson side is an even bigger mystery & yes I would like to know more Elsie & Robert Dyson had 1 child, my mother Gloria June Dyson Marr. I remember adopted brother we all called uncle Gal, short for Gaylord.
Robert Dyson died on Christmas Eve of 1963 I was born the September before. I didn't get a chance to know him. My siblings say he was a wonderful man. His birth record burned in a fire. I know for sure Canada had a special place in his heart. Robert Dyson would take trips up into Canada to go fishing. Robert Dyson was my mother s father. Anything else you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Karen,
I'm afraid I don't know much about your father's line, but I can help quite a bit on your mother's line, if you're interested. Her parents were Robert Ellsworth Dyson and Elsie Sifling. Robert was the son of John Dyson, who died before 1900. John's wife was Alice Estella Grokett, and that's where I come in. Alice was the only child of Sampson Grokett who actually had kids--even if it was just Robert Dyson. You and your siblings are the only direct-line connection to Sampson. I'd love to share information with you, if you're interested. I really hope to hear from you! Joe

There is a Eli Marr in my family tree married to a Betsey Delozier in 1813 in Rhea, TN, his Dad was Joseph Marr Sr who was born in 1774 in Fairfield, SC, he died in 1805. Eli Marr moved to Macon, North Carolina where he is seen on the 1830 US Census with his brother Joseph Marr Jr. I believe there is also a Lemuel Marr related to this family in some way. To be honest, I have found info on this family to be sketchy, to date I have found no info whatsoever on Eli and Betsey's children. Best of luck to you.

My grandparents George Marr and Jane (ne-McSkimming)Marr lived in Dumbarton, Scotland (maybe 20-30min driving) from Glasgow. Their son John West Marr is my father who emmigrated to Canada April 1953 on the Mauretania. My mother followed soon after (Jeanie Woods (Hepburn) Marr. I am the oldest and my siblings are Karen, Scott and Virginia. I left Niagara on the lake, Ontario and now reside in Clatskanie, Oregon. The rest of my family still live in the Niagara region. Thanks for the cite tip.
Jacqueline Marr

Sorry I am so late getting back to you. My own father 'John West Marr' came from Scotland on the RMS Mauretania 2 I believe in April 1953 and entered into the states and then traveled on into Ontario Canada. My father still resides in Ontario. My mother 'Jeanie Woods (Hepburn) Marr came over and few months later but she traveled from Scotland directly to Canada via Montreal and then by train to meet my father in Fonthill, Ontario. As far as I can find the remaining relatives from my family tree are still in Scotland. I am unsure of my mothers distant aunt who left Scotland and immigrated to Florida. Have a great day.

Hello there!

I too have been searching. And, yes there are Marr families in Kentucky, but in the form of Marrs. The name Marr or Marrs goes back to ancient times in Scotland & is/was part of the Earldom of Mar. There are different variations of the Clan of Mar: Mar, Marr, Marrs, Erskine, etc... In fact, my 83 year old grandmother is a Marrs, originally from Bloomfield, Nelson County, Kentucky. She now resides near me in LaGrange, Oldham, Kentucky.

I hope this was helpful.
