Hello Cousin Laurel! My mom is Marilyn Rose Van Wig White, she is the #7 child of Ken & Edna Van Wig. I remember your grandmother Maude. In Alma's bible is there any information on the family? Dates and such?

I live in Long Beach, CA with my husband Jim and our youngest Cathy (senior in high school). Our son and older daughter are out on their own. My parents are still living in Torrance where they have been for just over 50 years now.

Would love to share information! Send me your email and I can share photos.

There are 29 Marshallsea/say individuals from Dorset whose estates and next of kin are recorded in the Probate Index available on Ancestry, from 1867 to 1941. There might be some information there.

I have just found the marriage record of Charles Marshallsay in 1872. He says his parents were Charles Marshallsay farmer deceased and Elizabeth Ingram maiden surname Allan. I think they might be from Chickerell in Dorset, where they had children Mary 1831, Martha 1833, Emma 1837 and Elizabeth 1840, all in Dorset, as well as Charles 1843 in Yeovil. I can't find them in 1851. Parents only are found in Tufton, Hampshire in 1861. Charles Marshallsay snr, born ca 1803, died in 1867, I think, and his widow born ca 1805 married Thomas Ingram in 1869--a younger man than her.

I'm looking for a marriage record of Charles Marshallsay snr and Elizabeth Allan before 1831. Who were his parents? What happened to the 4 sisters of Charles Marshallsay jnr?

I have found out what happened to Charles Marshallsay jnr and his family: they went to Canada in 1882, first Saskatchewan, then BC.

On the Marriage Certificate (1900)of my great Grandparents George Warman and Annie Collins, the witness is Charles Marshallsen (farmer) and Emma Warman who is the groomes sister.
On the 1881 census the parents of Annie Collins (George and Elizabeth) have an agricultural labourer John Marshallsen residing at the residence in Broadway Hill Ilminster Chard Somerset.

I have seen the name transposed as Marshallsea, Marshallsen, Marshalsea and Marshaelsia.

There is also a connection to the Warman's of Somerset possibly through marriage of Elizabeth (nee Warman)Marshalsia (Marshalsea) and children John and Samuel who were living with John and Elizabeth Warman on the 1861 census.

The Marshallsea (however spelt) seems to have a strong connection to Somerset.

This is copy of an email I received from Murray Marshalsea
mhm1@ozemail.com.au.
I had an uncle Charles Marshallsea, Farmer and a Great Uncle of the same name. Both were resident initially at Running Creek (Dederang) just south of Yackandandah in Victoria.

By 1901 they have both moved to Cudgewa North near Corryong also in Victoria. Later they were to move to Wagga Wagga, NSW.G/Uncle was Charles Sutton Marshallsea and do to age factors he would be the
probable signatory.

I have an extensive Marshallsea family tree and the surnames you mention are not known to me. However their domicile in 1901 may be helpful to you.

Hope this helps.

Debbie Doolan (nee Warman)
pddoolan@optusnet.com.au

I have found a Charles Marshallsay b 1843 in Yeovil, Somerset. He might have had a sister Ellen. In 1872 in Edinburgh he married Isabella Blaikie b 1849 in Cheshire. In 1881, they were living in Lancashire, in Heaton Norris, near Stockport and had children Lucie J b ca 1874 and Mabel born ca 1877 both in Wales, and Marie Stella b ca 1879 in Kirkdale, Lances. He worked for the inland revenue. After that they vanish from UK.
Is it possible he went to Australia?? Would appreciate any further information about him and family.

In the marriage of my Ancesters George Warman (Worman) to Annie Collins 23/4/1900, their witness is Charles Marshallsea, farmer. I am not sure if there is a connection to ancesters possibly by marriage.

I also reside in Australia, in Sydney.

Debbie (pddoolan@optusnet.com.au)

My great-grandmother was Ellen Elizabeth Alma Marshallsay (1856-1930). Her parents were Matthew James Jeanes MARSHALLSAY (abt 1811-1890) and Mary Jane WELLMAN (abt 1818-1861).

My g-grandma went by the name of Alma and she married Martin VAN WIG in 1874 in New York. They moved to California where their six children were born.

I have some information on Alma's sibilings and am happy to share (also have photos!)

Hi Loretta,
I have a Emily Jane Marshallsea in my family, she was married to my Great Grandfather. His name was James Roche and they married in 1886, Emily Jane came from Yackandandah in Victoria and her parents where William Henry Marshallsea and Isabella Garrick.
They had 6 children only 2 surviving to adulthood.
James Roche then married a Louisa Storey and my Grandfather was born in 1903. I don't think he was divorced from Emily Jane as she didn't die until 1919.
Anyway love to hear from you and see if we come from the same family.
Good luck with your research.
I live at a place called Bunbury, in Western Australia.
See you, regards, Leonie

Looking for any information on these families - we have Marshalsea in our tree and have been doing some research. We've found that the name varies a lot in spelling (and was interchangeable in earlier centuries), but may be descended from one or two families. Have set up a database with info extracted from IGI, Vital Records indexes etc, and would like to hear from anyone with a connection or knowledge as to how the various families relate to each other.

Hi David, thanks for your message - there don't seem to be many of us about! So far I haven't been able to find a connection between the Dorset and Somerset lot, but would love to. I've started a spreadsheet that has several thousand Marshallsea/says in it, begun in the hope of finding that elusive link - which ones are yours? If you want to email me privately my address is challengepress@bigpond.com - I;m in Melbourne, Australia
