James Marshman, Convict, transported to Maryland 1772, married Rebecca Gordon in 1779

Would anyone know what the crime was that JAMES MARSHMAN was convicted of, he was transported to Maryland in 1772, settled in Prince George's Co., MD. James Marshman married Rebecca Gordon on 22 Oct 1779 in Prince George's Co., MD. In the 1790's James and Rebecca along with son's John, George and Alexander moved to Chartiers Twp., Washington Co., Pennsylvania. I further descend from Alexander b. 1794 Prince George's Co., MD, who moved to Monroe Twp., Holmes Co., Ohio around 1830, died after 1850 in Holmes Co., Ohio. I would be happy to exchange information.

Hi Guys,
Looking for any information on James (b.approx 1796) and Sarah (b.approx 1793).They married 9/3/1817 in Trowbridge. I know there is a Marshman family at Hilperton but I haven't found a connection. Children are: Thomas, Martha, Simeon, William, Mary, John & Gideon. My ancestor is John Marshman whose descendants ended up in Nantyglo, South Wales. I know about this line. I think Gideon went to USA - Massachusetts but not certain. I would like any information on James or his siblings.
Cheers, Jan

Thanks for the info. I don't doubt that William and Samuel are related. "Time and Truth" was published back in 1988, before we had the luxury of easily accessible, computerised records, so I don't doubt that some ancestors could have slipped through the cracks. In fact, one of my father's aunts was missing also. Will keep an eye out for William and Samuel when searching.

Sorry, I don't have any info on William or Samuel. They're not even listed amongst William Crabbe and Maria Marshman's children in "Time and Truth".

My mother had lots of info that I haven't had a chance to go through yet but I think it's mostly her side of the family (Crabbes were my father's side) so I'm not overly optimistic. Will let you know if I ever find anything.

I'm descended from William Crabbe and Maria Marshman via their son George. William's parents were Henry Crabbe and Elizabeth Miles. I don't know Maria Marshman's parents.

George married Mary Long in 1846 and they emigrated to Australia in 1852. This line has been extensively researched and published in the book "Time and Truth" (the name of the ship they travelled on). They settled in the Inverleigh region of Victoria.

Let me know if you'd like more info.

Regards

Vicki
Hi Kathy, I too am looking for info on James Anderson. I am very distantly related to the Marshman line. Here is what I have so far. Julia Anderson was b. Abt. 1875 in Virginia or West Virginia. In 1893 she married William M Marshman b. May 1871 Chester, Delaware, Pennsylvania, the s/o Chandler A Marshman (listed as C. A. Marshman in other genealogies, but I found hios civil war records on Ancestry.com that had his name as Chandler) b. 1836 Delaware, USA d. 13 Sep 1894 Chester, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Eliza J (MNU) b. May 1840 England d. Aft. 1900. William and Julia had 3 children that I know of (1) Ellie Marshman, (2) Annie A Marshman and (3) Ferris M Marshman b. Abt. 1910 Pennsylvania.
I have Julia's sister Anna S. Anderson b. Abt. 1887 Pennsylvania who married a ? Cassel. I have thier father James b in either Maryland or Pennsylvania and thier mother as an unknown b. Pennsylvania.
I know that 2 heads are better than one, and am in hopes we can share info and come up with more positive results. I can be reached at Countrygirl214@comcast.net

Terri Hamblin
East Wareham, MA.

On the 1850 US Federal Census in Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (image 69), there is a Charles Marshman in the household of John and Catharine Marshman. On this census report, Charles Marshman is 10 months old, and there's an older boy (age 5) named George Marshman in the household. Both are probably sons of John and Catharine. John Marshman, the father, has his occupation listed as trader.

On the 1860 U.S. Federal Census in Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania (image 33), Charles Marshman, age 10) is listed in the household of Cathe. Marshman. John Marshman does not appear, so it is likely he has died by this report. George Marshman (likely older brother of Charles) is still in the household at age 15.

This Charles Marshman, son of John and Catharine Marshman, is not same person as Charles P. Marshman, born 1846, the son of Charles P. and Mary Ann (Muckelson) Marshman, and who appears on several census reports in Philadelphia. Charles Payne Marshman, born 1878, is the son of Charles P. Marshman (born 1846). I think you mentioned seeing these latter two, designated Sr. and Jr., as they appear in the same household on the 1900 U.S. Federal Census in Philadelphia, Ward 26.

I learned that Charles P. and Mary Ann (Muckelson) Marshman were the parents of Sarah Marshman, wife of William Henry Slocum, from the Slocum genealogy (in two volumes) published by Dr. Charles Elihu Slocum.

I am in the process of tracing my Charles B. Marshman back to Upland Chester, PA. where I believe he was born and there are several other Marshmans living in the same vicinity around 1845. While I do suspect that the Philadelphia census information lists some Marshman families, I haven’t been able to trace them to my confirmed relation (Charles B. marshman) who spent the greater part of his adult life West of Philadelphia in the West Chester, PA area. Charles first wife was Sarah Bryan of Marshallton, Chester County and this is my relation. After this Sarah died in 1891 Charles later married a Violettie whom he was buried next to in West Chester. While I do suspect that he was related the Marshman’s who you are referring to, I have not yet made this connection. I believe Charles parents to be John & Sarah Marshman of Chester, Delaware County Pennsylvania as this information was listed in the newspaper by his then wife after his death in 1937. Is it possible that his mother Sarah could be the same Sarah that we are talking about? Sarah would have had Charles or Chas Marshman near 1846 and this all that I know of her to approximate her age. Charles obit simply mentions that he had several siblings but there are no details on who they are. I will let you know if I find anything connecting. Sorry to take so long in getting back but this is something that I only have limited time for and am having a harder time getting past this point but will continue making the effort as time warrants, Ron Marshman

You may be correct about Sarah E. Slocum, the child of the Sarah Marshman that you were talking about.

However, I'm guessing that after her parents died, she was called by her nickname, Sallie, and she was living with her Marshman uncle in the 1870 census, because you'll see that there is a young Sallie Slocum living with a family of Philadelphia Marshmans in that census. If my guess is right, then she married my great grandfather Charles Chew, and lived a long life.

It's not certain, and as you were mentioning to your correspondent, we have to be careful of jumping to conclusions about people with the same name. But it is pretty suggestive that shortly after the death of the Slocum couple, with a daughter Sarah, a young Sallie Slocum is listed as niece to a family of Marshmans in the same area.

Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I fully understand that I do sometimes get ahead of myself and may have done so here as you suggest. I am currently sorting out two different scenarios. I am finding what looks like either two Charles Marshman's living near each other in the West Chester area (45 minutes West of Philadelphia, PA) or the possibility that one Charles Marshman used two different close sounding middle initials (B & P) and had two different families which is possible since both families children were born at different time periods. My 3X Grandfather Charles B. Marshman was born in 1846 and died in 1937 so your Sarah would not have been his child and I haven’t found any record of him having a Sarah in either family. I have found Two Charles Marshman's living together in Philadelphia and am currently trying to decipher whether my Charles is one of these and whether one of these Charles may have been his father making him a Junior. I am confident that your Sarah Marshman is not the same person but may be my grandfather’s older relation. My initial issue is not knowing what ever became of his wife Sarah "Todd" (my 3X Grandmother) who seems to have disappeared from public record after their children were born. A couple of years later Charles started a family with a Violettie Patterson whom he is buried with in West Chester, Pa. I will be building my public tree in the near future so make sure to search for it as this may be of help to you. I currently live in Philadelphia and am familiar with Forest Hill cemetery (Philmont & Byberry). This might be a big help in trying to connect my 3X Grandfather to his parents, etc. Be sure to let me know if I can help you further in the mean time. Do you have a tree online that I can view?

Sincerely,

Ron Marshman
Thanks for your interesting response to my query. I caution you to be very careful when you find individuals of the same name when doing genealogical research. The same name does not necessarily mean the same person. I had a lot of trouble researching an ancestor named John Slocum who lived in Pittstown, Rensselaer County NY--I found after going through Rensselaer County archives myself, looking at old property deeds, that there were two unrelated John Slocums in the area at that time. My John Slocum ended up in Albany, according to court documents I looked at in the New York State Archives, at the same time the other John Slocum was still in Pittstown.

As for Sarah Marshman: My Sarah Marshman was born to Charles P. and Mary Ann (Muckelson) Marshman of Philadelphia, information I uncovered while doing research in Albany. My Sarah Marshman may very well be the daughter of your 3X Great Grandfather Charles P. Marshman, rather than his wife. She may be the product of Charles P. and his second wife. It was very common naming tradition for children born of a second spouse to be named in honor of a first spouse who was deceased.

I would be very interested to see your records on Charles P. Marshman and his wife Sarah.

My Sarah Marshman married William Henry Slocum in 1857 in Philadelphia. She died 20 January 1863, leaving behind two or three young children: Charles Marshman Slocum, born 24 Sep 1858, who died some time during the 1920's; William Henry Slocum, born 1860, died Sep 1863; and Sarah Elizabeth Slocum, born 08 Oct 1862 and death unknown, but she died young.

Both William Henry and Sarah (Marshburn) Slocum were buried in Mutual Cemetery in Philadelphia, which was located at Washington and 10th Avenues, but was closed and the remains moved en masse in 1924 to Forest Hills Cemetery, Philadelphia.

I have been trying to find the birth place of my Gr. Gr. Gr. Grandfather Charles P. Marshman who fought in the Civil War and spent most of his life in the West Chester Pennsylvania area. I did find a record that showed him being born in Upland, Pa which looks like the Chester area just outside of Philadelphia. I haven’t found anything concrete that can be substantiated yet but I did find a Charles Jr & Charles Sr living in Philadelphia by way of the 1900 census along with Herbert & Eliza. Do you have any information on these four Marshman’s? I was under the impression that My Charles P Marshman was named after his father which would make this too coincidental for sure although their birth dates do not appear to jive with what I have. My Charles P Marshman was born in 1846. I have found an entry for this same person living in Philadelphia with Sarah E Marshman who is my relation. The only thing that I have found for certain is the1910 census searching for Charles Marshman. Please let me know if you have anything further about your Charles Jr & Sr? If our Charles Marshman is the same person then I do have quite a bit of info for him and will share this with you if you are interested. I am currently doing more research to be sure of my findings on the Philadelphia connection. Let me know your thoughts. Please email me at ronannzabe@msn.com

I believe that I can help your cause my friend. Your information sounds interesting in regards to Sarah Marshman and I suspect you may be able to help answer some questions for me as well. Sarah Marshman was married to my Gr. Gr. Gr. Grandfather Charles P. Marshman living in the Chester County area of PA Do you know when Sarah married William Henry Slocum? I have some good dates if you need them but not currently on hand. My grandfather Charles P. Marshman went on to begin another family in West Chester Pennsylvania and I have not been able to trace Sarah Marshman after this separation / divorce? Let me know what type of information you are looking for as I suspect that our Sara Marshman’s are the same person. Do you know what became of Sarah Marshman in later years or possibly where she might be buried? Thank you, Ron Marshman.

Bessie Mae Marshman was an aunt of my mother-in-law, Myrtle Edna Seger Korleski. (She later changed her first name to Murdale). Murdale's mother was Hazel Marie Marshman, sister to Bessie Mae. Hazel and Bessie's parents were Robert Lorenzo Marshman and Johanne Lisette (Lizzie) Schroeder. They also had a brother named Robert L. Marshman and another sister, Alice A. Marshman. I have death certificates for Johanne, Robert Jr and his son, Lawrence Robert. I also have a marriage cert. for Johanne and Robert and Lizzie's confirmation, plus a few pictures.

Do you mind if I jump into the middle of this? I just saw this thread tonight...

I am looking for the parents of Ann Marshman, who married John Richman in Hilperton on 8 February 1811, in the presence of Thomas Marshman.

Their Richman children were Elizabeth, Sarah, John, Ann, James, Thomas, Mary and Mary, all but the first recorded in Hilperton parish records.

The only clue I have for Ann's birth year is she was age 59 in 1841 census (therefore, about 1781) and age 67 in 1851 census (therefore about 1784).

It looks like there were two Marshman families having kids in the 1780's in Hilperton - William and Elizabeth had Samuel (1773), Jane (1779), Maria (1785), James (1785), Phebe (1790) and Phebe (1795). John and Ann Marshman had Martha (1780) in Hilperton and perhaps John (1783) in Trowbridge.

What other records are available for Hilperton in this time frame?

Are there any other cousins with my Ann Marshman?

Cheers -- Randy Seaver in San Diego California area

Thanks so much for the reply, Hazel!
I think that the William Ch. and Samuel, sons of Samuel and Ann (Phillips) are probably my Mary Ann's brothers. The IGI has her as being a daughter of Samuel and Ann (maiden name not given) and she was christened 29 Jan 1797 in Hilperton. What is so strange about her (or at least strange to me) is that she married her dead stepdaughter's husband (my GGGGgrandfather) in 1854! (Although there was only a few years difference in their ages). Please keep me in mind if you learn of anything new about this family. Thanks!
~Gina

Hi! Gina,
Thanks for your query on Mary Ann Marshman. It is possible she may have been the sister to my William who was born c1804. I have a Samuel Ch. October 1773, parents William and Elizabeth. I also have William Ch. 1794 and Samuel born October 1801, at Hilperton, parents Samuel and Ann (Phillips). I have been collecting all Marshman names from Hilperton I can, so I may be able to fit them into my family. I have no definite links as yet. There appears to be so many Marshmans in that area. I have also got details of Marshmans from Trowbridge, but they are not mine. William was transported to Tasmania in 1820. His record states he was born 1804 at Bath and worked at the gas works. Since then someone working on the same line said he actually came from Hemperton ( I think it was meant to be Hilperton)
Keep in touch, maybe we will link somewhere.

Hazel,
I am looking for information on a Mary Ann Marshman who was born around 1797 in Hilperton. Her father is Samuel Marshman (a tailor). She was married to a Joseph Sartin/Sartain, but this may have been a second marriage. She was later married to a John Hobbs from Westwood in 1854. John and Mary moved to Glamorgan, Wales around 1855-1858.
~Gina

Hi Jim,
Yes, this is the same Marshman/Covel line!
:o)
I didn't have Harvey's middle name; only the middle initial D. I do have some information on Bessie Mae's siblings, parents, and even paternal grandparents. Before your message I only had Edna and Floyd Covel down as Harvey and Bessie's children...my only source for that being the 1930 census.
Bessie Mae's father, Robert Marshman (b 1864, Ohio) was my husband's g-g-grandmother's half-brother. Her name was Alice King. Their mother, Clara Maria Carr, married three times. Robert Marshman's father [Bessie Mae's grandfather] also named Robert Marshman was her first husband and he died due to injuries from the civil war. Then she married John King (1865 Coshocton Co., OH), had Alice and Willard King, and moved to Blue Earth Co., MN. Although I have not found a death record, I'm guessing that John died because Clara Maria Carr-Marshman-King then married Adam (John) Morgan and had some additional children.
I have an obituary for Bessie Mae Marshman's father and more information. ljdbs@worldnet.att.net
Laura

Robert Lorenzo Marshman was half-brother to my husband's g-g-grandmother Alice King Davis. I can probably fill in some details on their mother's three marriages. She (Clara Maria Carr) married Robert Marshman who died in the Civil War, then she married John King before moving from Coshocton Co., OH to Blue Earth Co., MN. He likely passed away and she married Adam Morgan. I have many more details.
Laura Schroeder
Minnesota

I have a William Marshman born about 1803 at Hilpterton, Wiltshire, though his convict record to Tasmania states he was from Bath. Do we have any connection? I don't know his parents names nor any other children born. Do you have a William who may have been a convict?
Do you know of William Marshman born abt. 1800 at Hilperton, Wiltshire. Apparently had convictions from about the age of 13, and eventually transported to Tasmania,Australia on the "Caledonia" in 1822.

Like you, I also forget to check the message board, but eventually do it. Seems like the name Marshman of Hilperton is quite common. Trying to confirm which William is connected to me is becoming difficult. I have two Williams being married in 1773. One to Elizabeth Best and the other to Elizabeth Simms, both from Hilperton. I never realised that Hilperton was such a large town. I know of Samuel, William and Maria in the family as they carried on those names here in Australia. Benjamin and Elizabeth were the other names we have. I think Maria married William Crabbe in 1809 at Trowbridge. Eventually I hope I can solve these problems

My ggrandfather was Joseph Marshman from Kent Co., New Brunswick, b.1855. I think his father was Henry and his father was John b.1790 and his wife Jane b. 1794. Any connection to your Marshmans?
