Charles Martel or Martell, Vermont

Hi, Charles Martell was born in Vermont (estimated 1859) , he married Margaret (Margeurite) Commanda on the Indian Reserve on Lake Nippissing, Ontario in 1889. They divorced, and Charles returned to the U.S.A. I'm a descendent of his Canadian child Joseph Martell. (spelled with one L before world war 1)

Charles was the son of Frank and Mary Martell (whether the name is spelled with one 1 or 2 seems to depend on whether the person is French or English).

I'm looking for more information on Charles Martell, and his parents, Frank and Mary.

If you can help please email me at andreyam@gmail.com . Thanks.

Martel

My G-grandfather John James Martel (1854-1911) and his mother Anne came to America in 1872. We have heard through the family, that John's father Joseph Martel, was an aristocrat and related to one of the Kings--Charlemagne. We believe they left France due to the revolution/uprising in the country. I am unable to locate this person, where they lived, etc. in France. Any suggestions?

Hi,
My name is Barbara Martell. I'm from Havana, Cuba and I live in Miami. All I know about my paternal family is from my mom. She told me the Martell family came from France. My mother told me that my father Pedro Martell and his family were from Cardenas, Matanzas. She told me the maternal last name of my dad was Hernandez. For years she told me my paternal grandmother name was Benita, but her real name was Bernarda. My father had a brother named Teodoro and a sister named Alicia. My father die in 1968. If you have some information, please let me know.
Thank you,
Barbie.

The Martels that Ernie & I are connected to were originally from Germany then went to Russia under Catherine the great & settled in the Volga River valley to farm. They are referred to as Volga Germans. Our relatives were Catholic & lived in Deleher,Russia.

Check the website www.martelandmartell.com for info on our tree. It has ALL of the info that we have. Seems like there must be some connection but we don't have anything with these names on it.

Would love to tie it to our line of Martells if possible. You can find this in the following parish book which appears not to be indexed.
C > Chambly (St-Joseph) > 1852-1853 > 80
Here is the complete URL:
http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=1091&pa... (requires ancestry.com subscription)

From yourfolks.com
Marriage:
On May 31, 1853
in Saint-Joseph
Town/District:
Chambly/La-Vallee-Du-Richelieu, Qc
Auguste Martel
Son of [ Etienne Martel & Louise Lemonde ]
and
Adele Fortier
Daughter of [ Antoine Forty & Josette Mailloux ]
Children’s marriage in this region:
Mariage enfants
1880-10-19	Saint-Bruno-De-Montarville	Elzear	M	Georgianna Jodoin

- Auguste Martel was married to Marie Adam

- Adele Fortier was married to Abraham Mailloux

===
I have an image of the above which I can email you.

From this marriage, I have found that Auguste was a descendant of Raymond Martel (born 1663 Bayonne, France and funeral 1 Nov 1708 at Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal).
Yes they were. They suffered a lot for their religion. I wonder how many people who have been killed in this world because of their religion.

On reading the older records of my great grandmother some of them look like "Mortel" Which someone said was an Irish name and I was able to find family living in England in the 1851 census. I have a theory this family is mine, the names and the dates coincide.

This would explain the Catholic religion. That is the part that had me stumped.

... Weren't the Hugenots french protestants fleeing persecution from the catholics before the Édit de Nantes that said that protestants were now legal? The french surname could come from a canadian connection, a lot of irish immigrated to Canada and instead of marrying to the (protestant) english, they married the (catholic) french.

She was born 1880 and then the next three siblings (all brothers) were born in Beresovka. Eva ended up in St. Mary's KS. I am trying to trace back Eva's parents....Michael and Anna Marie ---- any info?

Clarisse - My mother's maiden name was Martel from Southbridge,MA. Her father was Zenon R martel and I believe there were 10 siblings in his family one was my Aunt MaryJeanne (Martel) Remi of Webster. I am looking for anything on the martel family. Do you know if there is a family tree as I don't remember any other line of martel's in the Southbridge area. So, all were probably related. Would love any help at all or connections/leads to follow if you would like to share... I have a sister and a cousin also trying to put the Martel line together. My Grandmother - Zenon's wife - was Mae Theriault. Thanks....Thanks.

I do not have any information related to your search, but wanted to share that I recently learned that I am connected, in some way, to the Martels from Alsace Lorraine. I'm hitting a road block though-- and you may be able to help.

Here is what I know: Caroline Whalen (married name) was born in about 1839, and arrived in the US at about the age of 12 in 1851. She had her first and only child by 1860.

Family lore says that she was a dancer in a traveling troop (we have her traveling trunk still). I'm not sure if Martel is her maiden name, or a name from a first (and short) marriage.

She remarried later in life to a Connell.

Family lore also says that she lost one of her husbands in an avalanche-- although no one knows which one.

She lived, mostly, in the Magnolia area of Harford County, losing her farm for non-payment of taxes.

I'm mostly hoping to determine if Martel was a married name (which wouldn't require further research on my part, since I wouldn't be a direct descendant) or a maiden name. Can you help?

Could be, but given that they were all born just after the turn of the 19th century, the timing may not work. I'm 42 and one of the children on the list is my grandfather. My gr-gr-gr grandfather was born around 1845.

In any event, do you happen to know more about Naziare and who his parents were? This family moved from Quebec to North Battleford. If anyone else has info, I would gladly appreciate it. Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks

My Grandfather was a martel and I also am seeking family geneaology information. I know there are numerous relatives in Canada but my Grandfather was from Massachusetts. He was Zenon R. Martel. Ever run into any info on him? I am seeking family information for names Colby, Cashman, Trembley, Martel, Therriault, Fox and Bowman.
