One more thing. Legal notices in 1889 area newspapers call for all of Margaret Martineau's children to appear in surrogate court regarding her estate. Those noted are

You, and each of you, are hereby cited and required to be and appear before our Surrogate's Court to be held at the office of surrogate of the county of Clinton, in the village of Plattsburgh, in and for the county of Clinton, on the 18th day of November, 1889, at ten o'clock in the forenoon of that day, then and there to show cause why Letters of Administration of all and singular the goods, chattels and credits of Margaret Martineau, late of Plattsburgh, Clinton county. Note: All children are noted except for Caroline and David. This is further evidence that Mathilde/Martha and Elizabeth Lapierre were also children to Joseph Martineau and Margaret Dussault.

The Quebec vital record in the Droin Collection Joseph Lormier dit Martineau and Marguerite Dussault were married in Yamaska, Quebec on Jul 26, 1825. It also notes that bride's parents were Jean Baptiste Dussault and Marguerite Grenier [AKA Garnier] and that the groom's parents were the deceased Pierre Lormier dit Martineau and Catherine Vincent [other's research note that his mother was Marie Ursule Croteau and that Vincent was a sobriquet]. Witnesses were Joseph Lambert, Paul Laroque (bro-in-law of groom, but s/b of bride), Antoine Robidou's (father & son) 1825. - - - - - They had both Mathilde (Matilda/ Mattie/ Martha) on May 16, 1826 and Elizabeth [aka Betsy] on Feb. 23, 1828 in Yamaska as well. It appears that after the birth of Elizabeth, they moved to New York and had their remaining children there. The earliest U.S. census that lists the names of all of the household members does not not list these two daughters, so they are often omitted from family trees; however, they would have been over 20 at the time, so they were likely already out of the home.

I have a Hattie Martineau whose parents were Edward and Delima from New York. However I've got Hattie married to a Percy Barney in 1926 in Seattle WA. Hattie was born and died in Montana 1899-1967 respectivley.As fae as I know they had no children.

The 1870 census for Schuyler Falls notes that Josette Terry was born in Mich. So that is one more to her list of birth places, per census records, the others, if I recall correctly, being NWT, Canada and California. Back when she was born, around 1815, that was the Northwest.

This is from viewing the 1860 census. NWT is a common geographical abbreviation for Northwest Territories. I've seen a comment on the census page in which a member notes it as a denotion of New West Territories. From what I've read, the Northwest Territories, as a Canadian Province, covered much territory back in the time of these folks.

If they were born in the Northwest Territories before 1820, birth records, if any, may be hard to find, if any exist. I would be interested in knowing myself if someone has a source.

Pearl, you note:

1865 Antoine age 43 b Kingdom of Great Britain
1864 Josette husband John Terry age 44 b Province of Great Britain

Those are not decennial years, so they would not be from the regular federal census. From where did you get those years and info? Are the sources available at Ancestry.com?

The place of birth is NWT for Northwest Territories. **There is an Antoine Martino of Morrisonville, b 10/19/1818, whose place of birth is listed as "Near Rocky Mountains" in the NY Town Clerks' Register of Men who Served in the Civil War, a database at this site. The year of birth is 2-3 years different than the Antoine in the the 1850 census, but it is close and the unusual locations for place of birth, although not identical, do agree.

Hello Bernard. I have recently re started my family tree and came across this message in my "hunt".
Myrtle Beatrice was a cousin of my mother through the Martineau line. Mer mother was a Braden, married to my mothers' uncle Able Martineau. One of Myrtles' brother, Lorne, for some reason used the name Braden. He was born 10 March 1923 and married Gwendolyn Dorothy Brown. They has 4 children. Does this sound right?

Braden - Martineau connection

I need to know how this connection fits. I have a Grand-Uncle, Lorne Braden, from Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA (1923-2/28/2005). He married a Gwendolyn, moved (first) to Alaska, and then ended up in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

There is an obit that names his as a brother to Myrtle Beatrice Martineau(see below). He was living with the Braden family I am related to here in Springfield. However, I cannot find how this Braden is related to this Martineau. Can anyone shed any light?

Hi... I know your original post was YEARS ago but it seems like there has been recent contact. I'm not sure at all if you can help me because I'm not sure what all is in The Martineau book but...

I've been trying for years to figure of my relatives shortened their names from Martineau to Martin. I know they are originally French Canadian from what I can find.

In particular I am looking for Eugene Franklin Martin (b. 1882) in Vermont and married Agnes Pearl Woods they had 4 children Doris (my grandmother), Oliver, Roberta and Roland. The family later moved to Massachusetts.

I have found a Eugene with most of the right "stuff" birth year parents origin, etc. but it was a child of Alfred and Liena Martineau -- if you could even rule that out that would be helpful!

Here's a copy of the marriage for your records. You are probably correct about her father being Pierre Beique-Lafleur, if her mother only married Francois in 1856, four years earlier, yet he is the person given in her marriage record. Helene is Rose-Helene Fortier.

HI: I have some information on the Martineau family that settled in N Dakota territory (St John) in the early 1880s. Fortune Martineau was the original settler who arrived from Quebec, started a chain of Martineau stores, and was influential in the early beginnings of the state. Does your book include any of this information?

Rosalie Martineau, wife of Napoleon Murray

Napoleon Murray (1856-1918), son of Henry Murray and Eleonore Royer, is said in his burial record to be the widower of Rosalie Martineau. He was born in Saint-Nicolas, but lived most of his life in Lévis. In the 1881 census, he is single; in the 1891 census, married (but no sign of a wife); and in the 1901 census, he's said to be widower. This is all I have on Rosalie; I've not been able to find a marriage or burial record for her. Any Martineau family expert who can help?

Drink, Debauch, Death
Syracuse, Aug. 22. – John Yates was arraigned at East Syracuse yesterday charged with the murder of John Martineau yesterday. He was held for the grand jury. After a drunken debauch Yates accused Martineau of insulting his wife, stabbed him and shot him. The coins in Martineau’s pocket were imbedded in the bone of his legs. He lay without medical aid for three hours and died at a local hospital last night.

Bejamin Martineau married Julie Lafleur 11 Sep 1861 at Chapeau, Pontiac, Quebec. He died 16 Dec 1891 at Two Rivers, Ontario and was buried 12 Jan 1892 at Chapeau. Julie his wife was the daughter of Pierre Beique Lafleur and Rose Fortier. her father died abt 1846 and her mother remarried to Francois Dupont. Julie sometimes went by Dupont as a last name. Looking for information on this family. When and where did Julie die? Did she remarry?

I would also like to know about Jennie. Other children besides Tom, Thelma, Jetha, Lila, and Waunetta were Marie, John, and Margaret. I am a decendant of Margaret, but knew Thelma, Jetha, Lila and Waunetta. I've been told that Jennie was Rosebud Sioux Indian. I believe she was born in 1881 in Nebraska. Died in 04/08/1922 Des Moines IA. Her siblings were Lottie and Walter.
