Martinez y Santiago in Ponce

Hello. I'm trying to find more information about my grandmother's side of the family. She was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico (not sure if it's the county or the city itself) in 1927. Her name is Carmen Lydia Martinez y Santiago and she moved to NYC with her husband (Henry John De Cola) and children in the 60s. Mostly I'm trying to find a connection in Ponce through her parents. Her mother's name was Ana Santiago and her father's name was Francisco Martinez. Not sure of their birth years or birth locations. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

Do you know any of these people.
Obituary: Eleanor Martinez

MARTINEZ, ELEANOR DURAN Dec. 27, 1926 to March 8, 2012 Eleanor Duran Martinez was born in Wagon Mound, New Mexico to Beatrice C. de Baca Duran and Marcelino Duran. She attended local primary schools and went on to graduate from the Loretto Academy for Girls in Santa Fe. She then met the love of her life on Valentine's Day 1946, Joe C. Martinez from Ranchos de Taos. Eleanor and Joe married thereafter and would have five wonderful children together, Joseph, Mary Christine, Lovella, Agnes and Jacob. They moved to San Diego to follow the growing aerospace industry and to raise their young children in a new and exciting city. She loved cooking traditional New Mexican recipes, especially during Christmas-time where she'd serve posole, chicos and bizcochitos. Eleanor was a devout parishioner at St. Didacus Catholic Church for more than thirty-five years and was a member of the St. Didacus Altar Society. As her children grew older, she returned to work as a bilingual instructional aid at Sherman Elementary School where she worked for many years until Joe retired. She enjoyed planning weekend parties and fishing trips for her family, but most of all she loved traveling with her husband. Eleanor was a warm and caring matriarch for her family - she told wonderful stories of her life experiences. She placed her faith in God, above all else, to guide her throughout her life. Eleanor is survived by her children, and daughter-in-law Martha Campa and son-in-law Kurt Zufelt; her 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; her five sisters and one brother, and many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by us all, but will always be remembered as a kind, loving and generous woman. Services will be held this Friday, March 16, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Didacus Catholic Church, 4772 Felton Street, San Diego, California.

Published in San Diego Union-Tribune on March 15, 2012
Re: Origin of the Surname Martinez?

The origin of the Martinez surname depends on from where your family came. The same is true of the Indian blood. My martinez surname came from the first name of Martin Serrano. He was one of Hernan Cortez's blacksmiths when Cortez conquered the Aztecs in what is now Mexico. My ancestors used Martin-Serrano as a last name. Eventually they dropped the Serrano part and used Martin as a last name. This eventually evolved into Martinez. The Martinez surname existed in Europe, including Spain independent of of the Martin Serrano line. All of my relatives came to New Mexico in the 1590's. Because there was a shortage of Spanish women, many took Indian women as wives. Many were captured and used as slaves. The slave women were eventually incorporated into the owners' families. So the Martinezes from New Mexico do have Indian blood.

Obituary: Joe N. Martinez

Joe N. Martinez passed away from multiple health issues on January 2, 2012, with his family at his side. Joe was born to Daffodil and Antonia Martin in Green River, Utah on June 22, 1928. His mother preceded him in death when he was a year old. Joe and his two older sisters were then raised by his grandparents and subsequently by their aunt and uncle until he was old enough to join the military. He served honorably during World War II as a medium tank driver until discharge in February, 1947. Joe married his first wife, Angie, after returning from the service and together they had three children: Beatrice (Al) Hansen, Lee (Ernestine) Martinez and Polly (Greg) DesVoignes. Joe and Angie spent most of their married life living in Sunset, UT. He worked various jobs including an auto mechanic at Hill Air Force Base. In 1964 Joe transferred to Fairchild Air Force Base as an auto mechanic until early retirement in 1977.
Joe met his beautiful wife, Jan, while working at a Texaco gas station in 1969 and they married on October 25, 1969. They had three children: Scott (Becky) Martinez, Patty Martinez and Debbie Martinez. Joe has nine grandchildren: Justin (Holli) Martinez, Eric Martinez, Jose Martinez, Maria (Jonny) Matich, Shawn DesVoignes, Angela (Wayde) Deatherage, Jessica (Jared) Thomas, Anissa Martinez and Melodie Martinez; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Through the years Joe has volunteered for the American Red Cross and, until December 5, has been with the Spokane Police Department as a Senior Volunteer for the past 20 years. In addition to the many awards bestowed on him over the years, he was honored with the Spokane Police Department's 2010 Volunteer of the Year Award. He was an Eagles member and bowled on the Eagle bowling team for years. He also coached youth basketball and soccer for many years. He has been able to touch and help influence many lives. There wasn't anything Joe could not fix or repair. Everywhere he went he always had a smile or a hug for the ladies. His absence will be felt by many for some time to come.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Margaret Archuleta, and is survived by his sister, Mary Leyba of Canjilon, New Mexico.
Thank you Sacred Heart Medical Center, 6th Floor North and Hospice House of Spokane for their excellent care of Joe during his illness. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House of Spokane or a charity of your choice .
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 7, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 505 W. St. Thomas More Way. Please visit Joe's online tribute and leave a condolence at www.hennesseyfuneralhomes.com.
Obituary: Deliria M. "Lydia Martinez

A Lifetime cannot be defined the date of birth or the date of death, but it is instead defined by the small hyphen that separates the two.

The winters in February were brutal. The blanket of white that covered the ground could not bring any comfort, but Rosa was determined to brave the storm anyway. After hours of intense labor, Rosa delivered a baby girl on February 28, 1930.

Lydia Martinez was a new blessing to her family, that would eventually grow to nine girls and four boys. Lydia grew up with her siblings in the town of Ensenada, New Mexico. Lydia was a stubborn child, so much so that she developed frostbite on her toes because she was adamant about playing in the snow.

At nineteen she eloped with Marty Martinez. Smart on her part because she didn't have to go through the trouble of changing her last name. After they got married they sailed off to Europe.

While Marty was stationed in Germany, Lydia gave birth to her first child and only son, Manuel Gilbert Martinez, Jr. Lydia loved her new role as a mother and because Marty was stationed overseas, they raised Manny over in Germany and France. Eventually they came back to the United States and Lydia gave birth to her second child. Vivian Rose. With two children in tow and a husband to take care of Lydia took on the world's most difficult profession and a homemaker. 1960 eventually rolled around and with that decade came the death of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, Woodstock in 1968, and the only time we landed on the moon in 1969. But the major event in Lydia's life was when she had her second daughter in 1968, after the return of her husband from Vietnam.

The birth of her third child, Vikki Renee, brought Lydia to Henderson, Nevada. This town is where she would live out the rest of her life. Lydia and Marty joined the VFW (the place where all three of her grandchildren were raised).

Lydia's world came crashing down when in 1973, Vivian passed away from complications with asthma. Lydia was now facing every parents worst nightmare. She had to bury her child. As the years passed and the pain from Vivian's death dulled, Lydia welcomed her first grandchild, Krista Leigh. Five years later, she welcomed her second grandchild, Nolan. Then in 1992 Lydia battled cancer and won! Fours years later her third grandchild, Jordan was born.

Then in 1997 Lydia buried her husband Marty. They were married for almost 50 years. After Marty"s death she continued to be active in the VFW.

Tragedy struck again when Lydia's oldest child, Manny, lost his battle to cirrhosis of the liver. Once again Lydia found herself burying another child.

Lydia's pride and joy in life was her garden and yards. Often times, her grandchildren would joke that she loved her garden more that them. She also enjoyed going to dinner with her friends and church with her family.

The winters in January are cold and dry. Henderson winters do not compare to those in New Mexico, but this winter was different. On January 18, 2012, Lydia went to spend eternity with Jesus.

Hi - I too am doing research on a Lucinda Martinez who was married in Pueblo County in 1926 and died within a few years, before 1932. This Lucinda however, was married to Lee Sanchez, who was later known as Joe (Jose) Martinez. Does this sound familiar at all?

Thanks - sebestas@mac.com

She is Native American as far as he knows but nothing about a specific tribe. She married Magdaleno Martinez when she was very young and supposedly died shortly after giving birth to his mother at about the age of 13. Not much else is known about her.
