Where did your Mastens live? My dad said that his dad was Dutch. My g-g grandfather was John Francis (Frank) Masten, His son was Louis Harvey Masten born 1889,(only child), and my dad was Lawrence Francis Masten born 1920. John was born in 1842 in Illinois, Grandpa and my dad were born in St. Louis, MO

Hi, my g-grandfather was John Francis Masten born 1842, Ill married to Elizabeth Melissa Ring, my grandfather was an only child, Louis Harvey Masten, born Oct 1, 1889, his wife was Margaret Rose Hanley of St. Louis, MO. My dad was Lawrence Francis Masten, born Nov. 13, 1920, who married Marie F. Flynn of St. Louis, MO. We moved to Michigan in 1957.

My dad was Lawrence F. Masten,(married Marie F. Flynn) born in St. Louis, MO, in 1920. His dad was Louis Harvey Masten, born in St. Louis, as well, but in 1889, His wife was Margaret Rose Hanley. My Grandfathers' name was Frank Masten, Born in Poughkeepsie, NY on Dec. 1855. His wife was Rosa Wheeler, Born March 1861.
They had 5 children, Thomas Inglis - 11/1879 Arthur W.- April 1884, Wallace B.- Jan. 1886, Ralph F - June 1896 & Ester B.-Oct.- 1891

I would love to share what I have. My g-g-grandmother was Harriet Masten Minier. Someone else feels her first name was actually be Maldonna or Madonna. She was born in 1859 in NY and I believe she may be the daughter of Lydia Roberts and George Wilson Maston. That was the only Mastens living in Ottawa OH. Her daughter, Lillian Jeannette Minier Owen always referred to the other Ottawa Co. Mastens as her cousins. I think William Oren Masten would be Hattie's youngest brother.

There's an outside chance I'm related to this family...

I notice on the 1800 census there is a Benjamin Scherer living next door to Caleb...

This *might* be Benjamin Sherer aka Benjamin Sherow although it does not seem likely given the John Scherer next to him that is unknown to us...

Never-the-less, our Benjamin Sherer (Sherow) married an Elizabeth Masten in the 1790's... They lived in the Clinton, Pleasant Valley, Washington Hollow, Charlotte Precinct, Nine Partners, etc area... I'm trying to identify this Elizabeth Masten b between 1769-1772 depending on the source. Most likely she was born between Sept and Nov of 1769 and probably baptized the following spring (April)...

Currently the best candidate is Abraham Masten b 1733 in Poughkeepsie as her father. The problem there is the Winne family has laid claim to her. I believe they are mistaken in that regard for various reasons, but I continue to look closer to northeast Dutchess just in case...

LANCASTER: John Masten Jr., age 87 of Lancaster, Ohio passed away Thursday, January 05, 2012 at Heartland Fairfield Care Center, Pleasantville, Ohio.
He served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II, and retired from the Air Force in 1965. After his military service he worked for the Ohio Youth Commission until 1985.

Survived by: three sons, Michael (Robin) Masten, Steven Masten and Carl Masten, two daughters Karen Masten and Susan (Tony) Jenkins, grandchildren: Colt and Clay Masten and Ethan Masten. brothers : Charles, Ronald, Ralph and Raymond and a sister Marion Hanson, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Freda Mae Masten, and parents John F. and Edna Masten.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Monday at the Halteman-Fett & Dyer Fun
eral Home, Lancaster with Pastor Mark Barbee officiating. Burial will be at Floral Hills Memory Gardens where the Lancaster Veterans Burial Detail will conduct graveside rites.

Friends may call Sunday 5-8 P.M. and one hour prior to services on Monday at the funeral home.
The family suggests contributions to Fairfield Co. Alzheimer's Disease Support Group, 725 W. Hubert Ave., Lancaster, Ohio 43130.

He;s buried with his wife and a few of their early children at the Pittsbury Church cemetery aka Washington Hollow.

Note there are a few spellings of Rowland's name and his wife's name. I've found that Sary appears to be a Dutch name (which blew a giant hole in my English Masten theory...LOL).

Also of note is the children changing Masten to Mastin. Reason unknown.

I've seen it claimed that a Calvin RC Masten is a surviving child of the couple but can find nothing linking him to Rowland and Sarah.

Any help appreciated.

p.s. I'm also related to other families in the Pittsbury cemetery. Welling, Traver, Storms, Sherow, Sherer, Ham (adoption), Hallock, and Cromwell...

Jonathan Masten was born in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania in 1849. He is on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Census. He disappeared and the family never saw him again.
There is a John Masten/Maston in the 1880 Census for Rush, Kenton, Kentucky with a wife Fannie born in Ohio and a daughter Stella. In 1900 Census for Ludlow, Kenton, Kentucky it looks like the same John Masten/Maston with wife Fannie and daughters Stella, Ada, and Maud. I wonder if anyone can help me make a match or give up the search. If you know of him I would appreciate your help.

Samuel Mastin was my est 1870-1918 Married May Scott est 1880-1955

Samuel's siblings Willaim, Henry, Eliza, Lettia, Major, Robert, Hanah.

I found these names on the 1890 census.

I am pretty sure thier parents came through Ellis Island from Wails.

I am looking further into this.

This is also my blood line. I have found John L Masten est dates 1831-1912. Married to Lydia Mastin est dates 1833-1912. I think they came from Wales. I am doing some research of Ellis Island.

Children William, Ethel ( or Esthal)and Delema

Samuel's siblings were William, Henry, Eliza, Lettia, Major, Robert and Hanah.

Samuel's parents were John L Masten and Lydia Masten

I am aslo at a dead stop. Word on this side of the family is that May might have been Native American or at least 1/2 Native American.

I have hired someone to help in the search.I'll be glad to pass on any info if any of these people ring a bell with you.

I dont know. My grandmother was Delema Masten, she had a brother William and a sister Ethel. There might be more siblings, but I dont know at this point. They were from Deleware, but I have no clue as where they were born.
Thier father was Samuel Masten and Mother was May. Census records from that time are hand written and they have Masten spelled two ways. Masten and Maston. They also spelled my Great Grandmother's name as Mac...go figure.

Horace Greely Masten was my g-great grandfather on my mother's side. He was married to Frances Stone. Their daughter, Inez Masten was my grandma's mother. She was married to Joseph Abadie.

Would this be Charles A Masten who was married to Mary Piercefield and father of Verna Marie Masten? Verna married Eugene Sink. If this is the Charles you are looking for, I have information going back a couple of generations on the Masten side. Danville figures prominently in my family history.

I have heard of a William Masten, I'm sure there was more than one. My greatgrandparents came to Monroe co from New York State. My ggfather had a brother named William. My ancestors lived around Raisin river, Dundee,Azalia,Milan.My grandfather was Frank, ggrandfather was Jacob, gggrandfather was Abraham/Abram.
