Elizabeth Masters Buried at Grove Cemetery in North Bergen, New Jersey

There is a Elizabeth Masters buried at Grove Cemetery in North Bergen, New Jersey. She is listed as dead as of 1885 and I think this is the Elizabeth Masters who died 17 December 1885 in West Hoboken, Hudson County, New Jersey. Elizabeth was born about 1823, married Joseph Masters in 1860 in Paterson, Passaic County, New Jersey. According to the NJ Deaths and Burials for 1720-1988, she was a widow when she died in 1885. Elizabeth is one of ten people in this grave and I can identify most of them. The situation is fairly complicated since I think this Elizabeth was married once before to a James Bogardus who died sometime between 1855 and 1860, when Elizabeth then remarried. It is also possible that Joseph Masters (born about 1800 in England) had been married before. There are many Masters families and many Bogardus families and it is easy to mix them up, so I am hoping someone recognizes the above situation and can be of help. We can confine the locations to New Jersey and possibly New York. The weak link here is connecting the Elizabeth Bogardus married to James Bogardus, with the Elizabeth Bogardus who married Joseph Masters. I can manage it by fitting it together with other information I have, but it is definitely a speculative assumption.

I am the daughter of Roy Masters, son of E.G. and Maud Masters. They had a large family, Georgette, Fern, Theodore, Carl, Roy but cannot recall if there were other children.I think Ted was the youngest who had twin girls, one was struck by a car and died. My grandmother would send me Divinity Fudge at Christmas time if that would jog anyone's memory. Roy and my mother Emily got divorced when I was three and we moved back to Indiana.
Hoping to get some info on more relatives. Thank you.

Huldah E Masters; Mrs. Hiram D. Treat

Deaths from Newspapers and other Sources CLINTON COUNTY, MICHIGAN
Abstracted and Compiled by the Genealogists of the Clinton County Historical Society, Clinton Republican 1 February 1906, Page# 3 Column# 1

HAPPENINGS IN OVID
FOR MANY YEARS
Mrs. Hiram D. Treat Who Died Saturday, had Been a Resident of Ovid.
Mrs. Hiram D. Treat, who had been in poor health for some time, but seriously ill only a few weeks, died Saturday at 10 o’clock at her home in this village.
Mrs. Treat, whose maiden name was Shulda E. Mashers, **NOTE** (Name is Hulda E. Masters) was born July 21, 1844, in Luzerne county, Pa. On December 27, 1866 she was married to Hiram D. Treat, at Scranton, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. Treat removed to St. Louis, Mo., in April 1871, where they remained a few months and then came to Ovid, where they have resided for nearly forty years. Seven children were born to them, all of whom are living and who were at home during her fatal illness.
Mrs. Treat was known best in her family for she was devoted to her husband and children. There is an old Jewish saying “God could not be everywhere and therefore he made mothers.” What an influence such a mother as Mrs. Treat wields in the forming of character.
A large company of friends gathered at the home Monday afternoon, where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.F. Fryer, of the Congregational church. Comforting words were spoken from John 6-68. The remains were laid to rest in Maple Grove cemetery.
The words of Whittier are fitting tribute to the life of Mrs. Treat:
“The blessings of this quiet life fell on us like the dew;
And good thoughts where her footsteps passed like fairy blossoms grew.
Sweet promptings unto kindest deeds were in her very look.
We read her face as one who reads a true and holy book.
Fold her, O Father, in thy arms and let her henceforth be
A messenger of love between our hearts and Thee.
Still let her mild rebuking stand between us and the wrong
And her dear memory serve to make our faith in goodness strong.”

I believe Dice and Devrow Masters were her brothers, or maybe her uncles. I just remember my father referring to them as "Uncle" Dice and Devrow. My niece has traced the Masters and Hopkins back about 7 generations if I can ever get in touch with her to get copies.
Hello

My grandmother was Beryl Masters. She came from St Mabyn in Cornwall. She also had a brother called Billie who died in the war (in the navy, his ship was sunk). Aunty Alma i think was the aunt who used to visit us in Wotton under Edge, Gloucestershire. I am unsure what my greatgrandparents names were as they both passed away when i was young.

Beryl married my grandfather Donald George Pruett and they brought up their family in Cam Gloucestershire. They had 6 children. Kevin, Michael & Maureen (who were twins, Maureen being my mother), Barry & Donna. They also had a son called Tony who died sadly when he was a baby.

This must mean that your dad is my great uncle.

Kind regards
Suzanne Tovey (nee Bennett)

Are you still seeking information on these persons? They are my G-G-Grandparents. Our family has the their family Bible, photos, and documents that start with their immigration in 1854 from Camelford, Cornwall, UK where they lived at Lanagan Farm estate with the Thomas Keat family. The young couple came to Canada in 1854 with an infant named Richard Keat Masters, and were joined with three brothers named George, Joseph, and Henry, settling at East Zora Township, Ontario CA, where they are buried in that town cemetary. I am now trying to find earlier information on John's father Henry and earlier. Will exchange family info if you wish. Laura L.
Re: Josiah Masters born New Zealand, father Richard Josiah Masters and Sarah Crawford

Hi, I am not sure if I have been in contact with you before re our mutual ancestors the Masters.

I have quite a bit of information if you would be intersted and of course I note this thread was back in 2004.

Richard Josiah Masters married Sarah Crawford in Picton NSW Australia 1864 (NB he used the name Henry on the marriage cert.) I think they had 1 child born in Aust then migrated to NZ where he had 2 brothers Charles & Edward. Sarah was only about 16 when they married. One of their children died in NZ about the age of 2 & Richard Josiah died soon after.

Richard Josiah's parents were Richard Josiah Masters and Mary Boutcher.

Richard Josiah Jnr was born in Middlesex and there were several children Orlando, Henry, William , Mary Ann (died in infancy) Charles Melbourne, Clement Stuart, Edward Arundel, another daughter also Mary Ann bn 1846 (my gt gt grandmother).
I have missed some.

Charles & Edward came to NZ and Richard Josiah came over from Aus around the same time as their mother came from England with Mary Ann (aka Marion Annie)

After Sarah returned to Australia she did remarry and have more children.

I would very much know what happened to their brother Clement Stuart. The last I have been able to find was as an apprentice on the ship Loodinah arriving in NSW 1855.

The handwritten story we have written by Mary Ann's son about 1890 or so is that they lost contact & he died at sea but I have not found any proof. My father has as his second name Clement and I see on several of the Certificates I have purchased there are Clements in the Australian branch of the family.

PS not sure about the Auckland birth of Josiah although it was in NZ

Regards, Patricia
My great great grandfather, William Masters (b c.1831) came from Warwickshire but unfortunately none of the census sheets state which area. On his marriage cert his father is John Masters, a labourer. If I have the correct John he would be an agricultural labourer. William was an Iron Stone/coal miner, so was his brother John, in the Oldbury area. This came under the registration district of West Bromwich.Cradley is not far away.
My great grandmother was Ann Maria Masters b. cerc1860. She married Thomas McHale. And lived in Langley/Oldbury which was within the boundary of West Bromwich. Her father was Willliam Masters. Does anyone share these people? Jan

I know where Flat Fork is and have been there. The Masters cementary is next to the Christian Church off the highway from Globe west of Olive Hill,KY.

Hi....we do seem to have possible connections with our Masters.like you I have hit a brick wall and most of the posts have been to do with Alice Masters which I have not found. William Masters born about 1831 was my GG grandfather. I know from marriage cert and also shows his father as John. I also found that his brother John was with him on following census sheets. William was a coal miner also John. In 1851 they were both miner apprentices in Langley (Worcestershire at that time)where William must have met my GG grandmother Eliza Allen.
The cencus for 1841 1851 and 1861 have a John Masters married to Sarah ?? John is down as a labourer. The area was Marton Warwickshire. The similarities suggest we may have the same family. Your info is the closest I've had in 4 years. I would like to pursue this further. What do you think? Shall we contact via email to make it easier? Mine is janatstandgale.co.uk Hope to hear from you again Jan
