ISO Pittsbury, Dutchess, New York - Rowland Masten 1784-1864

Sorry about any cross-post...

I'm seeking the family of Rowland Masten who lived in Dutchess County, New York

He;s buried with his wife and a few of their early children at the Pittsbury Church cemetery aka Washington Hollow.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nydutche/cems/pitts.htm

255. Mastin, Isaac C., s. of Rowlin & Sary, d. 1824, July 27, a. 5-2-23.
256. Masten, Rowland, d. 1864, Dec. 4, a. 80 y.
257. Mastin, Sarah E., dau. of Rowlin R. & Sarah, d. 1827, Apr. 18, a. 6 m. 18 d.
258. Masten, Sarah, d. 1867, Oct. 18, a. 74-6-4.
259. Mastin, Daniel F., s. of Rowlin R. & Sary, d. 1845, Sep. 27, a. 24-3-12.

Note there are a few spellings of Rowland's name and his wife's name. I've found that Sary appears to be a Dutch name (which blew a giant hole in my English Masten theory...LOL).

Also of note is the children changing Masten to Mastin. Reason unknown.

I've seen it claimed that a Calvin RC Masten is a surviving child of the couple but can find nothing linking him to Rowland and Sarah.

Any help appreciated.

p.s. I'm also related to other families in the Pittsbury cemetery. Welling, Traver, Storms, Sherow, Sherer, Ham (adoption), Hallock, and Cromwell...

webster Mastin is my Great Grandfather, he also went by webster J Mastin, his son Oliver was also known as Charles Oliver Mastin who was my Grandfather. Webster's father as far as I have found was known as Harham or Hiram depending on which person did the census. Hiram's (or Harhams) wife was Sarah Hapeman. I found on several of webster's census records that it mentions a howard spellman (if I remember right) which is why your inquiry caught my attention with your last name being spellman, do you know of the spellman/mastin connection? I do have a picture of webster J Mastin if your interested I can e-mail you a copy. if you would like to get ahold of me my e-mail address is beewrangler@yahoo.com thank you for any info you can give me ......R.Troy Mastin

Hello Tim Townsend I'm Stacy.I noticed your last name and your knowledge about the Mastin's. Both names are in my Earegood family tree album. There are 2 Mastin's, J. Mastin and his wife Mary Noggle Mastin. And there is 1 Townsend named Lillian (Ross) Townsend.I saw a Scott Bush on the message board and he mentioned 2 family names, the Townsend's and his mom's family the Ewright's.Now I was looking up my mom's family on Earegood-Ancestry.com and on a long list I saw the Ewright family name,so they hafe to be related or else they wouldn't have been under the same title,so I want to know how are the Ewright's related to the Earegood's? Please email me back at stacy.thomas81@yahoo.com

Cousin Jeff,
Fred Hint Mastin was my Great-grandfather too. I am granddaughter of Coach, but I'm sure we've never met. I am really looking forward to sharing stories. I have some more information on the tree, but I am looking for more. I want to know the history between the Mastins and Hazelwoods. And if we have conclusive evidence on Leota Omega and her parents, Tennessee House and Mr. Key, whatever stories we can find about Tennessee's ordeal.
You can email me at alisonwonderland1@gmail.com.
Thanks!

Eileen, thanks for the reply. Mary Elizabeth is my wife's great granmother. She married Chapman Martin Curry in 1877. Most of the family trees I have come across on the Mastin's do not include Mary Elizabeth. It appears she married when she was 15 and is listed as being married, but also the step daughter of Anna Curry, in the 1880 census. In the same household is Chapman Curry, also listed as being married. Both Mary and Chapman died in Philadelphia. Also, Chapman did time in a Federal prison for shooting a federal tax agent while protecting a still. I have information on the Mastin's going back to 1690 (John Matin) but nothing more. On the Curry side I only go back to Chapman's father, Martin, but have no information on him or anyone else. Do you have any information that might be useful?

Kate Mastin Davis and Clarendon Davis had three children I believe, Fannie, Elizabeth, and Catherine...Is this correct? And do they have any offspring?
Also, Clarendon's brother, Paul, married Edna R. ? and they too had children, Greer and Paul. Do you know anything further on them and if they have offspring?
I appreciate the help. Thanks.

Do you have any info on Curtis Mastin, born in Estill Co. in 1824? His daughter, Evaline, was my ggrandmother. Curtis' 2nd wife, Nancy Burris Mastin, was supposedly his 1st wife's sister but her death certificate lists her father as "Tandy Burris"--very hard to read, might not be correct--and her mother as "Betsy Pigg". Is it possible they were cousins and not sisters? Would love to hear from anyone who might have a clue.
Nancy Burris Mastin, Powell Co., KY

Just received death certificate for Nancy and I'm a bit confused. All the trees I've seen show her to have been married to Curtis C. Mastin of Estill Co., KY after his first wife, Eliza Ann Burris, died. My ggrandmother, Evaline Mastin, is Curtis' daughter according to her death certificate, which lists her mother as a Mary Burris--I am guessing this is a nickname for Manserrena.
Nancy B. Mastin's certificate shows a death date of 11 Jan 1929 in Powell County which agrees with the existing trees, but her father is listed as a "Landy Burse"--very hard to read, it's possible that it is Tandy Burris. Her mother is shown as "Betsy Pigg" and the certificate is signed by her daughter, Annie Sewell. Both of Nancy's parents were born in KY according to this certificate.
It also says that Nancy is buried in Powell's Valley Cemetery. Can anyone give me directions to this cemetery?
Any thoughts about this information would be greatly appreciated. I live in Delaware and can't get to KY to do the legwork just yet.

Eva Mastin Morton

Death certificate for Eva was signed by her daughter Mary Goff of Winchester, KY. Born 19 Jul 1864; died 28 Apr 1940. Eva married John W. Morton abt. 1891-1896 and they had a grocery and/or hardware store for many years in the Ford and Winchester, Ky areas. Her father/mother as listed on the certificate were Curtis Mastin & Mary Burrus, both born in Estill Co., KY. If anyone knows any more about these people, I would love to hear from you. My grandmother was their daughter (sister to Mary Goff), Anne Jefferies Morton, married Frank William Jones abt 1928.
Is it possible that the Mary Burrus on the certificate is the same as Nancy "Manserrena" Burris, 2nd wife of Curtis.
