I'm a Matty (used to be Matej). My great-grandfather came over from Kľušov, Slovakia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). His father, Andras Matej came over to the US (Pennsylvania) to work to make enough money to bring his wife and kids over. Here is is record from Ellis Island.

http://ellisisland.org/search/passRecord.asp?MID=19581002010...

Because his family had immigration visas, they did not have to go through Ellis Island. They lived in what used to be called Stickel Hollow, Pennsylvania, but is now called Star Junction.

Matey or Matyi

My grandmother's maiden name was "Matyi", in
Hungarian prononunced almost Mutt-ye, but the
Americanized version sounds like Matey. She
settled originally in Johnstown, PA.in 1907 and had lived there with an uncle. (Don't know his name yet). I was in Hungary this summer, and there are many Matyi's. At Ellis
Island they often changed the spelling to fit
the american pronunciation. Please contact me.
there were a number of Matyi's.

I understand that in Hungarian,
Matej is pronounced like Muh-TAY and
Matij is pronounced like Muh-TEE but they are essentially the same name due to writing and spelling variances. They were probably used interchangeably and the English conversions are just as varied. What have the rest of you heard? Thanks.

I am researching the name Matey in the Philadelphia, PA. area. My mother is a Matey. I list four brothers who came to Phila. around the turn of the century, one of whom is my Great-grandfather. They all started as coopers.
If you are looking for Matey's in Phila., let me know.

Found your name on the Web. I am living in England. My ancestors were from HUNGARY. My grandmother - (English Margaret) surname ERDOS emigrated to United States early 1900's from RABACSANAK, Hungary. She married CHARLES MATEY and the last known address (20 years ago) was - 12803 Corbin,
Detroit 25, Michigan. We think they had only one child and I have found a Social Security Death entry on the Web for CHARLES MATEY born November 20th 1930 died October 1976. This seems a bit late to be my Grandmother's son (my uncle) but could be, or possibly her grandson as the death occured in Michigan.

As my mother was an illegitimate child left in Hungary when my Gran emigrated to the United States, possibly her descendents know nothing of our existance.

I would be so pleased to trace any living relatives and would appreciate help from anyone who knows anything or is connected.

Good hunting - JOSEPH HORVATH
