Jean Hellams Simmons Mathias, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church. Pallbearers will be Michael Scott Cook, Robert W. Putman, Jack Dylan Cook, J. Hunter Pendarvis, Neil Macaulay, Clayton Macaulay and John William Mathias.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Charlie Crews, Bill Routh, Edgar "Flip" Wingard and Dr. Gray Macaulay.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2008, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
Mrs. Mathias, born in Leesville, S.C. on April 28, 1924, passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2008. She was a daughter of the late John Walter and Laura Hellams Simmons. She attended Winthrop University, received her BS from The University of South Carolina and earned a Masters of Social Work from Tulane University. She served in the Waves during World War II and retired from the Dorn VA Medical Center after 30 years as a Medical Social Worker. She retired for the second time after 10 years from the Lexington Medical Center. She was a member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church and served as President of the Quail Hollow Garden Club.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. John Homer Mathias of West Columbia; sisters, Dorothy S. Cook and Judy S. Putman, both of Laurens; nieces, Judy C. Pendarvis and Nancy C. Lachicotte; nephews, Robert W. Putman, Michael Scott Cook and Michael L. Simmons. She was predeceased by her two brothers, HYY. Simmons and John W. Simmons.
