Many thanks - I think a trek to Haverfordwest is called for (to the archives) - fmp doesnt yet have Pembs records... their Cardiganshire ones are quite good, but it is still worth looking at the originals (or copies) in the Nat Lib/elsewhere as there are huge gaps in the data.

and thanks for the info re Eglwyswrw

Jen

Hi
"My" Mathias's go back to Eglwyswrw, Pembrokeshire, with the oldest known being William born abt 1781. I have not found a James in his family but William's marriage has not been found yet so there might be missing children. There was no James mentioned in his will though.
However, there were certainly Mathias's from Nevern Parish attending Eglwyswrw Church. This may have been because they lived closer to that church than Nevern Church. Nevern is a large parish.
You could try findmypast who have Welsh Parish records available online now - at a cost. If you live within reach of the county archives office in Pembrokeshire they have the same records available but there you can see the copies of the original pages not transcriptions. Much better! No mistakes.
Sorry but no known link as yet.
Regards
Byron

Just checked - you were on line yesterday, so hoping you will see this...

Only just found your 2002 message. I wonder if you would be kind enough to check your datafile... my relatives are as follows and I would appreciate any input. The info I have I inherited from a cousin now gone, so can't cross check with him.

GGgrandfather and mother
James Mathias born Nevern 1806 married Mathry 1827
Ann Harries or Harry born 1808 (place unknown)

Ggrandfather and mother
David Mathias, born 3/3/1849 place unknown
married 1871 HFWest ?Solva died 1917
Phebe Williams - Llandeloy? born 1845

Gfather George Mathias, born 1883 died Cwmamman, Aberdare.
married Mary Ann (Maryan) Evans of Cilcennin - I have full details and photos of this couple. And quite an extensive tree of the Cilcennin family – Evans/ plus Richards

If any of these fit, then I would be very happy to share photos and info etc.

Best wishes from West Wales

Jen

Anthony and Emma (Beck) DeKemper actually had three sons. Ralph, Morris and Vernon. The oldest son Ralph lives in Charlotte, NC and is 96 at the time of this posting (born December 25, 1915). Morris lives in Dubois, IN where he still actively farms his land at the age of 94. Vernon, the youngest was nicknamed Bates. He passed away several years ago. All three served in different branches of the military during WWII and all three sons had three sons of their own.

The above subject has eluded me and others. We all live in Australia and that is where the above subject moved to. We cannot detect when or how he came here.
A birth cert from one of his daughters mentions Cardiganshire Nth Wales - another researcher has him down as Cardiganshire, Pembrokeshire.
Are these 2 places near each other. I was under the impression that they were not connected.
Can anyone find any info about my elusive Gt Gt Grandfather. We would so much like to find our roots in Wales.
Harold Mathias his mom was Virgie Mathias

My Great Grandpa Harold Raymond Mathias is hard to research. I can find in the 1910 census he was living with his grandma Leah Francisco(Poling,Mathias) and her husband. Then in 1920 he's living with the Carpenter family and still in Ohio. By 1930 he had married my great grandma and was living in washington. He was born in 1901 in Hocking County Ohio and his mom is listed as Virgie Mathias. I have no idea who his father was. According some information I found looks like Virgie may have married and left Harold with her mom. I found that her parents were William Mathias and Leah Poling. Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Nancy Matthias - William Handley

Recently I found the death certificate of my great-grandfather's sister: Margaret M. (Handley) Crane.

According to that dc, Margaret had been born in 1825 in Greenbriar County, Virgina (now West Virginia). Her parents were, according to the dc, William Handley and ________ Matthias.

And, according to the dc, Margaret's middle intial {M.) also was in place of her full middle name of Matthias.

According to the 1830 census record in Fountain County, Indiana, this William Handley would have fit into the 50-60 age range, which would have had him born between 1770 and 1780.

From later records, land, probate (william died in 1833) and census, William's widow at the time of his death was Nancy. Nothing in those records indicate her maiden name. Margaret's dc is the first clue that we later researchers have had to help us in that regard.

It's not hard to find gedcoms which line our William Handley to one of John and Grizelda's grandchildren, however, most of those seem to do so on the authority of Randall J. Handly's book, and he really didn't provide any background citations for lining William up that way.

So, my question now becomes, with "Mathias/Matthias" now seemingly in the mix, does the identity of my William and Nancy (likely nee Mathias/Matthias) come into recognition for any of you?

Here's hoping. We've long (again, likely because of Randall's book) figured that William likely came from Greenbriar, but this is the first documentation of any sort which seems to confirm even that detail.

Thanks!

Joe Hittle
www.hittle.info

My ancestors - Christian and Caroline Marthia - were in Tonawanda, NY. They arrived around 1846 from Alsasce Lorraine area (Mackwiller, France). They arrived with three daughters, only two of whom survived. While in Tonawanda, they had two sons (Christian born 1848 and Philip born 1850). The last name on passenger records was spelled Mathias. The last name on records from Mackwiller was either Mathia or Matthia. The parents disappeared sometime in the early 1850s. In the 1855 census, the four living children (Caroline, Catherine, Christian, and Philip) were all living with different families. If this sounds like some of the family you seek, please let me know.

There was only one Wesley Mathias in Nebraska (Wesley Thomas, aka Thomas Wesley). His parents were Benjamin and Nellis.

You may want to contact the cemetery that's listed on the death record for Myron to see if they have any additional information (since he died in NC but was buried in Nebraska, he may be buried with or near relatives).

I couldn't find Myron nor Wesley and Marie in the 1930 census.

My grandfather is Myron W. Mathias, I think he was born in 1928 in Lincoln Nebraska. I know he died in Sanford, NC in 1968. I was hoping to find someone who may know him or be related to him. I have his parents names as Wesley Mathias and Marie Brei (I am not sure if this is correct). My mother never knew her father so I am trying to research that side of my family tree.

Hello

I am trying to do some research into John James Mathias, who pased away in Worthing, West Sussex on 26/4/2005.

I am married to his son, and neither he, or his mother know anything of his family/background. We know he was married before and had one or 2 sons, apparently living in the Worthing area. John James also apparently had a sister. He always said he was born at Southlands Hospital, but this wasn't built at the time of his birth.

We now have a daughter, and I would like to find out about her Grandfather for her future info.

Hi!

I was wondering if in the course of your research you have run across Eliza Mathias who married George W Kesselring. They lived in the Fulton County Pennsylvania area, were buried in the Wingardner Cemetery, and George Was a witness for Phillip Mathias' will. Her dates are Oct 16, 1817 to Feb 1, 1897.

Thank you!

U.S. Sen. Charles McC. Mathias,87.born ,in Frederick, Md.*( Degree from Haverford College,/University of Maryland *)
Charles Mathias
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -
Former U.S. Sen. Charles McC. Mathias,
a liberal Republican from Maryland who championed civil rights and protection of the Chesapeake Bay during his 26 years in Washington, has died. He was 87.

Mathias died Monday at his home in Chevy Chase from complications of Parkinson's disease, said his sons Charles and Robert.

Mathias' career spanned the turbulent years of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement, and he often found himself at odds with his party on those and other issues.

In retirement, Mathias broke with his party again in 2008 when he endorsed Sen. Barack Obama a week before the presidential election. He said Obama was "better suited to recharge America's economic health, restore its prestige abroad and inspire anew all people who cherish freedom and equality."

Leaders from both the state's Democrat and Republican parties described him as an influence on their careers. Former Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich said he keeps a photo of Mathias on his office wall.

"He was a pioneer, a gentlemen, and a fierce advocate for the citizens of Maryland during his time in public life," said Ehrlich, who was elected Maryland's first Republican governor in a generation in 2002.

Mathias was elected to the House of Representatives in 1960 from a western Maryland district and quickly gained a reputation for bucking the Republican Party. Election to the Senate followed eight years later. He was a strong supporter of civil rights legislation, favored allowing the District of Columbia to govern itself and supported a federal ban on inexpensive handguns known as Saturday Night Specials.

When conservative Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater won the GOP presidential nomination in 1964, Mathias would not endorse him by name, saying only that he supported all Republican candidates.

Mathias generally supported President Richard Nixon on economic issues, but opposed two of the pres ident's conservative Supreme Court nominees and voted against the administration's attempts to weaken the 1965 voting rights acts.

In his home state, Mathias was considered to be the father of the massive state and federal program to clean up the Chesapeake Bay.

On June 22, 1973, he began a five-day, 450-mile tour of Maryland's portion of the bay, meeting with more than 150 scientists, business leaders, conservationists, farmers and watermen. That tour laid the groundwork for the eventual partnership among Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, the federal government and the District of Columbia to preserve the bay.

Mathias served three terms in the Senate before deciding not to seek re-election in 1986.

"The season has arrived to shift to a new field of activity," he said in 1985 in announcing his decision. While Mathias was often at odds with the Republican right, he said "that was not significant" in the decision and that conservative colleagues were "ex tremely open and supportive during the time I had this under consideration."

He also predicted "the tide will come in again" for Republican moderates and liberals.

In March 2005, when Mathias received an award from the Maryland Senate, state archivist Edward Papenfuse told the Senate that as a Republican in a Democratic state, "Sen. Mathias wore the label moderate Republican with pride and to great effect."

"His record on civil rights, fair housing and protecting the environment is universally recognized and acclaimed," Papenfuse said.

In a 1993 interview with The St. Petersburg Times, Mathias said that "participating in the civil rights movement was the major thing."

"When I went to Congress, this was a segregated country. Now there is, at least, in law, no racial barriers," he said.

On Monday, Maryland House Speaker Michael Busch described Mathias as an influential lawmaker who "cast a giant shadow across the state of Maryland."

"He stood for all that was good about public office, all that was good about consensus building," Busch, a Democrat, said.

Busch said there was no greater advocate for the Chesapeake Bay than Mathias.

Audrey Scott, chairwoman of the Maryland Republican Party, recalled working on his campaigns and considered him an inspiration.

"He is one of my idols," Scott said. "He was so genuine, so honest. He was a true public servant. He never had a personal agenda. It was only what was best for the people."

Mathias was born in 1922 in Frederick, Md. In his 2008 essay endorsing Obama, he wrote that in 1860, "my great-grandfather ran for the Maryland Senate from Frederick on the anti-slavery Republican ticket. At the top of that ticket was Abraham Lincoln."

Mathias got a bachelor's degree from Haverford College and received a law degree from the University of Maryland in 1949.

He served in World War II, enlisting as an apprentice seaman in 1942 and earning a commission as an ensign. He rose to the rank of captain in the Naval Reserve.

After serving as an assistant state attorney general and city attorney for Frederick, Mathias was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 1958. Just two years later, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for the first of four terms.

Besides his sons, Mathias is survived by his wife, Ann Bradford Mathias and two grandchildren, Clare and Catherine.

2010 .
I am hunting for a James Nathan Mathias who was born in Nth Wales about 1821. I have him as being born in Cardiganshire on his daughters birth cert BUT someone else is stating Pembrokeshire. We cannot find how or when he came into Australia one of his his sons James was born here in Australia in 1854 so we assume some time before then he arrived here. He married Eizabeth Jarrett or Elizabeth Kemp (her bprevious marriage)
It would be fabulous if you could find something.
Kind regards
Jen from Australia

Hello:

I know your post on rootsweb is very old however, taking a chance you might be around. I know your post said you are willing to search data back to about 200 years. My ancestoral information is a little older than that...lol. My 5ht great grandfather Benjamin Mathias was born in 1747 in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, Wales. at about the age of 21 he moved to Dublin Ireland where he married and started a linen wool business. They had one son Benjamin Williams Mathias b 1772 who was orphaned at about 7 but went on to become a well respected leader for the Church of England.

I would love to find out more about the older Benjamin Mathias.

Regards
Deb
