McGLASHAN, McFARLANE, McPHERSON, LOGAN

Among the family letters in my possession are a number written during the period 1869 to 1887 by JOHN McGLASHAN (1831-1906), addressed either to his uncle and aunt (Jacob and Mary Mitchelson), or to his Mitchell cousins. It occurred to me that McGlashan descendants might be interested to see and read these letters but all my efforts to trace any have failed.

I know that John's eldest surviving son, Archibald McGlashan (born 1871) became a medical doctor and had his practice at Allanton, Kirkcaldy. He married Agnes McPherson at Glasgow in 1901, and had several children including Margaret (1902), John (1905) and Ronald Archibald (1907), all born in Kirkcaldy.

Telephone directory listings reveal Dr. A. McGlashan, listed from 1921 through 1940. The address shown in 1940 was 167 Balsusney Road. His phone number was Kirkcaldy 2136. Dr. McGlashan died at 167, Balsusney Road, Kirkcaldy on 6th January, 1946. I have his death certificate, but I expect there would be some mention of his death in local newspapers, and at the very least, an Obituary notice which might mention his immediate family, but I've not found a way to access this information yet.

The death of Dr. McGlashan's widow (Agnes McPherson) is recorded in the District of Haymarket, Edinburgh, in 1951. The informant was her daughter Margaret, signing as "Margaret Logan" of 5, Pitt Street, Edinburgh. [Note: Margaret Logan died in Edinburgh in 1975, but permission is denied to view the image through Scotlandspeople.]

Where are Archibald McGlashan's descendants today? What happened to his sisters, Mary McGlashan (student of art in 1891) and Agnes McGlashan? Did they marry and have issue?

I hope some day to hear from a descendant of 'cousin' John McGlashan.

Has anyone found more information on Margaret Baird who married Robert Wood Mathie in Scotland, who lived in St. George, Utah; until they moved to Thayne, Wyoming, where they are buried. I am attempting to research this line of my deceased husband. All records I have found show her mother to be Christina Ballantine who married James Baird in 1825. Christina is James 2nd wife. Christina marries a William Martin in 1839 in Glasgow, Scotland. William Martin is listed as a Step-grandfather to Margaret's son William Baird Mathie in St. George temple records.

Hi,

Thanks for replying, I know my grandfather moved to Johannesburg in the mid 60's while my grandmother moved to Pretoria. It's more than likely that my grandfather was the addition to the Mathie phone book as we have been the only Mathies in Pretoria. We do know of another couple of brothers (unrelated) that moved over to Durban around the same time my Grandfather's family arrived in the mid 1800's. They came over for the gold rush and settled in the Baberton area. As far as I know there are still some photos in the Baberton museum. Scott Mathie who used to play for the Sharks as a substitute flyhalf is related to them.

My parents are still in Pretoria and I have an Uncle in East London with my grandmother being the only other person bearing the Mathie name in Pretoria.

The 2 oldest references I found about the Mathies were Eilean Donan Castle and a legend of a Mathie son that could talk to birds.

Eilean castle is an extremely famous castle in Scotland that has featured in many movies (Highlander with Sean Connery being the most famous). I had the privilege to visit the castle and it is really picturesque. The Mathies were constables of the castle.

There is an interesting legend about the oldest son who travels and can speak to birds that I found out about when I visited the castle. I have managed to find it online but I'm struggling tonight to find the link.

I wish you well in your search and I hope I've been of some help!

I would love to hear of any tidbits you find

Anthony Mathie

Hello Anthony

I only stumbled upon this site 4 years after you posted your request about the Scottish Mathies. I can't help you at this stage as I only recently decided to trace my own family, but there may be a connection - I came to SA from Scotland with my parents in 1965. My father was James Tennant Mathie, of the Kilmarnock Mathies. Until I was in my teens, we were the only Mathies in the Johannesburg phone directory, so I'm always curious to meet other SA based Mathies.

Kind regards

Alistair

Mathie's from Irvine, Ayrshire

My husband's family came from Irvine. They immigrated to Utah in the late 1800's. We have never been able to get much farther back than John Mathie, b. 1802. He married Jane Wood, b. 1802. He died in 1878 and is supposedly buried there. Any connection with your family? I can send a more detailed lineage if you'd like.

I am looking for the ancestors and descendants of John Mathie and Mary Orr of Scotland. John and Mary probably had 12 children;

William Mathie (1801)
William Mathie (1802)
Janet Mathie (1803)
Margaret Mathie (1805)
John Mathie (1807)
Mary Mathie (1809)
Helen Mathie (1811)
Alexander Mathie (1813)
Agnes Mathie (1815)
Elizabeth Mathie (1817),
James Mathie (1820)
Jane Mathie (sometimes known as Jean Mathie) born 4th June 1826

All births were recorded in the Abbey district of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

The only two I have any information on are James and Jane.

James married Catherine McAlpine in 1841. They had at least 6 children; the third, Mary Orr Mathie married James Steele and had at least 1 son, James in 1869.

Jane Mathie married Robert Watson in 1857. They had at least 6 children;

Alexander Watson (1858)
Agnes Watson (1864)
Margaret Watson (1866)
Charlotte Logan Watson (1870)
Annie Morrison Watson (1872)
David Watson (1879)

Most of the births were recorded in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire, Scotland. The 1881 Scottish Census shows the family resident at 7 Collier Street in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland.

Margaret Watson married Michael McConnachie on 31 Dec 1891 in Johnstone. They had 2 children, Jeanie McConnachie (1899) and Helen McConnachie (1897). I have made contact with a descendant of this line, Irene Mitchel in Canada.

Annie married George Crawford Malcolmson in 1897 in Johnstone. Annie and George had at least 3 children, one of which was Margaret Malcolmson (usually known as Maggie Malcolmson). Maggie was born abt 1900 and is my grandmother.

You can view my family tree information at http://www.genealogy.com/users/m/a/l/Ian-Malcolmson/
